Definitely

So Boston is playing the tired cliché "we're a bunch of scrappy, wild, against the grain bunch of guys who shouldn't be there" that at least 1 team does EVERY year.

Nobody gave us a chance

team of throw-backs, real ball players. professionals.

It worked in 2004.

It's always nice to see the Mets sweep the Phillies away. That being said I kinda hope the Reds help keep the Mets in the bottom 10 for the protected draft pick. Last thing the Mets need is an excuse to not sign a good free agent.
|
I hope so too, buddy.

Yanks shut down CC Sabathia for the rest of the year due to a Grade 2 hamstring strain. He only had 1 more stat left for the season with Phil Hughes now starting that game.

Would not surprise me if the Jays traded Bautista this off season.
|
One of the craziest ways to end a game I've seen. To practically clinch a playoff spot for Pirates. Just your classic 9-8-3-2 Play at the Plate to end the game.

Silly it feels as good and looks like a World Series win. Cigars. Non stop partying. I'm loving this.

Clint hurdle: abso-BUC-n-lutely!!!!

And with that the 5 NL playoff teams have been decided. Now all that's left is sorting out the seeding and the NL Central winner.
|
And 3 spots remain in the American division.

Every time I see the AL WC standings and where the Yankees are I feel like Lloyd Christmas.

Still hellbent on getting under it last I heard.
I see them going a touch over it. |
Todd Helton's last game at Coors Field was rough to watch, both because of the fact that I love that dude and because the Red Sox beat the Rockies faces in.
|
Hate that champaign gets popped every other game this time of year. Clinching a playoff spot/division, winning the one game playoff and winning the divisional round are not worthy of such a celebration. Not even the lcs really. I don't get it.

My dad shed a tear watching Rivera last night. Felt awkward but then again there were 40+ grown men on the field doing the same thing.
|
Hate the Yankees but goddamn that was cool. Respect the s out of Rivera.

Marlins fire P.B.O. Larry Beinfest and his special assistant Jim Fleming.
I feel sorry to the executive who takes that job. |
Mariano Rivera; That's how a ball player should want to go out.

Tiebreaker scenarios for the AL Wild Card spots announced.
If all three teams finish the year with the same record, Cleveland hosts Tampa Bay on Monday, September 30th. The winner of that game gets a Wild Card spot. The loser of that game plays at Texas on Tuesday, October 1st for the second Wild Card spot. The actual Wild Card game would follow that on Wednesday, October 2nd. The host team is determined as follows: If Tampa Bay and Cleveland play, Tampa Bay hosts. If Tampa Bay and Texas play, Texas hosts. If Cleveland and Texas play, Cleveland hosts. Note that this situation only happens in the event of a three way tie for both spots. If two teams tie for the second spot with the third team taking the first spot outright, the tied teams would have a one game playoff with the host determined the same as above. The winner of that game would then travel to the first Wild Card team to play the Wild Card game. |
Has there ever been this much fanfare for a guy going out like Rivera before? Seems really weird to me. Like yeah he's the greatest closer of all time but the constant tributes and "moments" seem like a bit much.
|
Can't imagine what will happen when Jeter leaves.
|
I was thinking Ripken Jr. had all that going for him when he hung 'em up.
|
Eric Wedge tells the Mariners he won't return as manager next season.

I don't even know if Jeter would get this kind of sendoff. Then again I'm not sure he's the type who would pre-announce his retirement. He'll turn 40 during next year but if he goes back to putting up Jeter-esque numbers I think he'd just keep going on a year-to-year basis and retire in the offseason when he does hang 'em up. If he did announce retirement ahead of time I'm sure he'd get honored at each park and everything but it'd probably be more like Chipper Jones' sendoff than Rivera's. The biggest Jeter "moments" would probably come during the ASG and at Yankee Stadium, where he'd almost definitely get the same honor as Mo in having his number retired while still active. |
Speaking of honoring players - Mike Piazza goes into the Mets HOF tomorrow and it's shockingly expected to be a sellout crowd. Not bad for a meaningless Mets/Brewers game on a NFL Sunday.
But the Mets have said they still aren't retiring his number. I'll never understand why they're so stingy about this. They haven't given 31 out since Piazza left. It's clear they're never going to give it out again...so just retire it. He's the best hitter you've ever had, you dummies. |
Hope the Jays can sweep the Rays. I like the Rays, but I want these games to matter to the Jays
|
Lol the Jays won with this lineup
SS Reyes DH Kawasaki 3rd Lawrie RF Sierra 1B Derosa CF Gose 2nd Goins LF Pillar C Thole Only Derosa hasn't spent anytime on the DL or the minors this season |
Quote:
The Red Sox themselves are pretty strict with their requirements since its both 10 years played on the team and be in the MLB Hall to get a number retired. |
Jays giving the Rays a shitkicking again today with only Lind, Reyes and Lawrie in their line up.
|
Lol 7-1 Jays now in the 5th. Goins and Pillar both hit 2 run home runs. If Tampa gets swept Tampa's 5 fans will be pissed.
|
Love me some Mike Piazza.
|
Quote:
I'm glad they don't retire the number of every significant player ever...but I do at least think each "era" should get a number retirement. Keith Hernandez' 17 should go up as he was really the leader of the Mets through most of the '80s. Carter only spent 5 years with the Mets, but he was a co-captain so if they were to put 8 up as well I wouldn't mind. Both numbers are out of circulation anyway so it makes little sense to not officially retire them. Gooden's 16 and Strawberry's 18 don't really have much of a case, they were great but should have been HOF'ers if not for the off field problems. 17 and possibly 8 is fine to do the '80s justice. Then you throw Piazza's 31 up for the late '90s early 00's, and from there you don't have to worry about retiring another number until 2020 Wright (who already has most of the team records and will have a HUGE lead in everything by the time he's done) retires. That would be 6 or 7 numbers retired over about 60 years. That's really not that bad. |
Giants lock up Hunter Pence for 5-years, $90 mil.

I thought Pence was done last year. He looked slow and old... but managed to pull himself together again. Not so sure about 5 years

Gonna miss Andy Pettitte

Andy fucking Pettitte with a CG to close it out
|
did he win?
|
Yep. Complete game.
|
Sounds like Mo getting an inning in CF isn't going to happen. Knee is bothering him, plus Houston has that hill in center field. So that means his career is officially done, he's already said he's not pitching as he wanted Thursday's game to be his last moment on the mound.
Bet he gets one final "moment" next year. I'd guess he's the odds-on favorite to toss out the first pitch on Opening Day. |
5 meaningful games today. The Indians clinch a WC berth and home field for the one game playoff with a win. An Indians loss and wins by the Rays and Rangers brings about the 3-way tie scenario mentioned on the last page. Would LOVE to see that happen as it means extra baseball.
In the NL, all eyes are on Atlanta and St. Louis. Cardinals clinch the 1 seed with a win or Braves loss. Braves win the 1 seed with a win and Cardinals loss. |
Love this time of year
|
The Pirates are playing "A" ball with their second string......
And I second Screech's comment above....I live for October baseball. |
Henderson Alvarez throws a no-hitter, Marlins score on a walk off wild pitch in the bottom of the 9th to make it official.
|
J.P Arencibia finishes with a .194 batting average. Finished even below the .195 mark I predicted.
|
Indians clinch the 4th seed. 21-6 in September. With all due respect to John Farrell, Francona has to be manager of the year.
|
What was my total games watched this year... think it was like 5
Definitely didn't watch anything since like July |
A fun/weird last day in baseball which got swept over due to me sleeping in and also watching some football

Quote:
While I'm hoping for an offensive overhaul this offseason I think d'Arnaud will be the primary catcher next year. Let him learn and bat 7th or something. Hopefully the Mets will get enough offense this offseason to justify it. |
Rangers came back from the brink of collapse and force a tiebreaker game tomorrow against the Rays for the other wild card spot.
I'm down for game 163. |
I'll be watching since it's unique. Go Rangers.
|
Insane stuff. The surviving team will have used their first and second best pitcher before the ALDS even begins in Boston.
|
So neither of my World Series teams even made the playoffs and one of them finished under .500 (Angels, had the Nationals in the NL). I only picked 2 correct division winners (Dodgers and Tigers) and 5 playoff teams overall (Braves, Reds, and I'm covered with either the Rays or Rangers).
I sure do know how to pick 'em. |
Fuck. Rays/Rangers "Game 163" for an A.L. Wild Card berth. But whatevs...as long as my Tigers finally bring home a fucking World Series title this year, it's all good.

This is the year of the Sox. Sorry about your damn luck.
