I watched "Altered" last night. Was pretty wild, good use of busget on practical effects.

Tokyo Gore Police was a real let down.
The Ninth Configuration was totally bonkers and had some incredible dialogue.

Now watching Knives Out.

I'm not getting a comedy vibe from this film about a son that rapes his father.

It's satire, it's not comedic satire though. At least I didn't find it funny, just disturbing.
It was pretty angry and provocative, and definitely gross.

There are shorter, sexier versions on pornhub that star 20 year old "mom's". I think they are more popular.

If you want a really good laugh you should try an Austrian film called "Michael". It's bloody hilarious.

I've stuck "Vivarium" on.
The opening is pretty grim, nature is horrible. Hopefully this film gets good and weird, was too wary of spoilers to do much reading.

where is your rating of Knives Out

I stopped watching it, it was boring the tits off me after about an hour.
I don't like whodunnits as a general rule but this one looked fun. It was bearable until I realised I didn't care one iota who dun it and no number of twists could satisfy me after the first big reveal.

So yeah, not my cup of tea at all.
I think I prefer mysteries where you have to figure out the mystery yourself, that clearly wasn't the point of the exercise here.

It reminded me of the things I don't like about Steven Soderbergh, if that makes any sense to you.
Premise secondary to dialogue, dialogue that only works if it's smart or funny enough to pull you in.

I also stopped watching Sorry To Bother You for similar reasons.

I get hooked by a premise but the realisation of it is poorly executed for my taste.
I'm like a bit of gritty reality and you tend not to find that in these sorts of films. Too busy trying to be clever or make a point.
Great, but entertain me first mother fucker.

Now "Vivarium" is brilliantly creepy so far.

I didn't like Knives Out at all either... Felt like turning it off throughout... Felt like it was geared towards ppl who are really into "Lin Manuel Miranda" or something... people who "love Hillary Clinton"... not for me

Taking notes, this is one of those films a few of you will want to see I think.

Really enjoyed Knives Out..... no opinion on "Lin Manuel Miranda" and apathetic towards all politicians.....

LOL, I think it's just one of those "if you like that sort of thing" films.
Everything looks good individually but together it's inert, like the drug from that Samuel L Jackson movie.

Elements of "Johnny Bear" almost.

Reminds me of an excellent film called "Wrong" but with literal horror aspects thrown in.
It used that opening nature footage pretty perfectly even if it seemed heavy handed and a little overt.

Starting to hope this doesn't go anywhere too definite. Leave me wondering about some stuff...

I've seen parts of it in the past, but never in its entirety. Silly 80s fun.

Imogen Poots is incredible in "Vivarium".

House hunting goes badly wrong for an unwary, unwitting couple.
The film opens with a nasty piece of repulsive nature and follows on with pastel coloured pop-art sets that look like they came straight out of a housing development flyer from the 50's.
Peter Greenaway would love these sets, they look so plastic and blatant that they themselves supply a great element of unease to go with the immediately insidious storyline as well as the performance of the bizarre realtor.
Not to give anything away at all(because the plot is so small and brilliant), this is a film about a situation nobody can do anything about. They have been put there, they are stuck there and making the best of it doesn't ever seem to be a truly viable option.

Eisenberg always struck me best as a naturally neurotic character playing himself off as confident, which is a perfect reason to cast him here because he does it brilliantly and in an extremely restrained and far less verbose character than usual. He jumps from idyllic to insane pretty quickly in this film, or at least his actions would be criminally insane in any other environment outside of this one. Were I posting this on some turd website I'd suggest multiple trigger warnings for people who can't handle a bit of grit, but in the context it is completely essential to the tone.
Man and woman begin to fall apart over the course of the movie due to the malignant influence of a terrible mystery.

This is a film to think about because it explains so little and yet makes sense within its own rules and decisions. It isn't a strange film for the sake of it, it adheres to its own standards and makes the effort to give you something you can take as far as you want in your own imagination.

This was pretty much the best film I could have seen after explaining why "Knives Out" bored me enough to turn it off.
It made the effort to create a mystery, then it provided solid dialogue and story progression based on believable reactions to the premise.

I very much enjoyed and was creeped out by "Vivarium", but be warned. There are a couple of moments in this film that could be described as "just fucking stupid" if it took you even slightly out of the movie.
Luckily I was already too engrossed to care, however this is a distinct possibility with people who do not want anything particularly overt in an otherwise fairly complex little story about a nightmare in real life.

Excellent performances from top to bottom in a tiny cast makes everything more impactful. The plot was clearly set, well paced and executed well enough to induce existential terror.

I would advise anyone who has seen it or wants to see it to read the John Steinbeck short "Johnny Bear", watch the Quentin Dupieux film "Wrong" and have a look for Peter Greenaway's "Tulse Luper Chronicles" in any form you can find it in order to see similar set designs which surely had to have an impact on these.

This is so weird it could almost be a Japanese film.

Watching another Eisenberg/Poots joint called "The Art Of Self-Defense".
It has a very deliberate style of line delivery in it that makes each character seem like they came into the real world from a Wes Anderson film.
Almost everyone is slightly off... no sincerity to over sincerity, monotone delivery of speeches that require passion... There are some incredibly funny lines that come purely from this style of delivery.

Alessandro Nivola and Jesse Eisenberg play well with the tone. It has an odd, disingenuous quality to it. Very funny.

"Poots" still a v entertaining name

The Grudge (reboot). 3/10. That's prob being generous. It's disjointed, incoherent, and not nearly as scary. V disappointed.

This movie smells like cheese.

Also this is the best part Alessandro Nivola has probably ever had.
