i was well aware of who ric flair, dusty rhodes, harley race, etc. were living up here in the north, but my mom's side of the family came up here from florida so that's probably the only reason why.

whiteyford 12-26-2014 10:55 AM

Same as Indy guys now, if you follow more than one promotion you knew who guys like Punk/Bryan etc were and what they were capable of, otherwise you're kinda going solely by how they're presented when they debut.

There was those who are in the "Bubble" and those who are out.

I grew up in the Southeast, so I was a bit more out of the "Bubble" than most (A big WWF fan back then (never said I had sense), but quite aware of folks like "Mean" Mark Callous, Sid, etc.)

Then again, I was even more out of the bubble than most, as I also watched Global after school and got to see folks like the Ebony Experience, The Patriot, and Scotty Flamingo.

We never got WCW in Australia until the mid-late 90's. Even at the video stores there was only really WWF. Yet I still knew who Ric Flair was when he debuted in WWF, admittedly due to a book I got in the late 80's that had a brief mention of him in it, but I just knew he was a big deal.

Hanso Amore 12-26-2014 07:38 PM

I grew up in buffalo, and was a huge wwf fan. But I would still see wcw on tbs all the time. Then I started watching it more because their weekly shows had big names and not just squash matches. I thought it was so cool to watch wwf on Saturday morning. Then wcw Saturday night. I never saw them as competition just different shows.

So because one faggy little kid never heard of them means that the rest of the world didn't?

WCW was always the minor leagues.

Emperor Smeat 12-26-2014 08:32 PM

Did WCW ever have a Saturday or Sunday morning show like the WWF?

Remember watching some WCW once in a while as a kid but not sure if it was just the Saturday night shows.

Helmsphere 12-26-2014 08:41 PM

No I remember waking up at like 7 in the morning and there would be a WCW show on. I want to say it was Worldwide or something like that.

GD 12-26-2014 08:41 PM

Nikki Bella has done a great deal (as far as looks are concerned) to set herself apart from her twin.

Grew up in Michigan. Was vaguely aware that there WAS a WCW, because I'd flashed past it flipping channels, but I had no idea who Flair was as a 9-year-old when he debuted. I wondered who this old guy was and why was he going after Macho Man.

I had TBS, but never really watched it. I did used to watch Global, though. Can't remember which channel had it, but I remember being more excited when Patriot showed up in the WWF years later than I was to see Flair.

Vastardikai 12-26-2014 08:55 PM

I always saw it on ESPN.

Surprised you didn't know about WCW because Steiner Brothers. Weren't they supposed to be the gods of all of Michigan, or some such shit?

I knew about NWA/WCW mostly because of my brother. He would tell stories about visiting family over in Akron that had cable (back when that was kind of a big deal, and not taken as granted in every household you walk into) and seeing, and subsequently telling me about guys like (apparently pre-King) Harley Race, or Road Warriors, or Magnum TA or the 4 Horsemen from some channel he'd be able to catch it on there. Mom cosign'd on Flair (and "hated that bastard"), which led me to learn about other wrestlers that weren't in WWF... it was like a whole other side to wrestling I wasn't able to see, and that kinda made it exciting. I didn't know shit about Terry Funk (again, mom did) until I saw him later on in WCW and recognized him as "that guy who always gets beat up in movies" (he's always someone's bodyguard or lackey, and he always get's his ass kicked. Example: Roadhouse.)

FourFifty 12-27-2014 04:20 PM

I didn't know about any non-wwe wrestling until I was in the 6th or 7th grade. I was at my grandma's house, then all of the sudden there's wrestling on tv, but it wasn't WWF wrestling. I was mildly confused, then bored. Later on, after Hogan joined WCW, I was watching TV and all of the sudden I see Hulk Hogan with a pair of brass knuckles holding at least 6 heels at bay. Part of me died seeing that. It was the first instance as a wrestling fan that I couldn't allow my sense of disbelief to kick in. I watched Papa Shango use voodoo and bought it, but not Hogan with a pair of brass knuckles holding off 6 guys.

Fignuts 12-27-2014 04:45 PM

Got into wrestling around the time of wrestlemania 6. Mom bought me the PWI 500 of that year shortly afterwards, so I knew a bunch of dudes outside of WWF very early on.

WCW weren't on WWF's level, but they still had their own magazines and toys and stuff, so I knew who Flair, Luger, and Sid were before they arrived in WWF.

Lock Jaw 12-27-2014 05:14 PM

Looks like Savior and Shisen were harassing her... on behalf of owenbrown.

#1-norm-fan 12-27-2014 05:46 PM

Yeah, I lived in California. WCW was on TBS which wasn't a strictly southern station obviously. You could find the action figures and stuff in stores right there along with the WWF ones. It definitely wasn't some obscure company outside of the south.

SlickyTrickyDamon 12-27-2014 05:46 PM

WCW also got an NES Game in like 1990. It was shit but it got a national release.

Droford 12-27-2014 06:02 PM

NWA used to run a lot of shows here in the late 80s because Baltimore was their northern hub for big shows

Seriously guys, how did they fuck this up? Rhodes Bros were sooooooo hottttttt

Lock Jaw 12-28-2014 01:14 AM

Still think they missed the boat with not extending the Rhodes/Shield/Usos feud to TLC and having a TLC match for the tag team titles (which would have been won by The Usos)

Hanso Amore 12-28-2014 01:54 AM

Even if they teased it out and did the easy thing and split them it was something.

But FUCK how hot were they just to....nothing? And Cody so hot to.....Become another person?

You mean "dropped the boat".

Helmsphere 12-28-2014 02:12 AM

It's sad, I actually believed as a WCW Fan, Johnny B. Badd and Z-Man were the most badass wrestlers ever.
