:D Larry Lucchino getting demoted by the Red Sox.
Hated that guy ever since he played a huge role why Theo Epstein suddenly left the team as GM. Outside of Chicken-gate, he's been a big source of the problems the Sox have had over the past few years. Good guy to have when it comes to building up a team/organization but becomes a huge headache once he gets too hands-on or refuses to concede power to other people. |

Now that I'm finally down to a stable blood pressure I can now objectively comment on the lack of movement from the Padres at the deadline.
I honestly don't get it. For four months, this team has underperformed. They've played below 500 after a 10-5 start. Injuries have exposed the lack of depth created after pillaging the farm system in the off season. Even then, the Padres had an envious amount of valuable talent in which they could move to restock the farm and possibly reload the major league team. Instead they sat on their hands, making zero high profile moves. Industry insiders claim that gm Preller was asking for way too much in return, and that, as confirmed later on by the team in an attempt to spin the non movement, belief that the club can still win out. So they foolishly think a club who's been losing for 60% of the season can still turn it around? Great. Why didn't they bother to add top big club? You mean to tell me there were no deals available to add a shortstop, second baseman, third baseman or centerfielder? None? And even then, the daft thinking behind their belief brings great fear of what the future holds for this ballclub. The Padres are losing one starting pitcher to free agency in each of the next three offseasons. Ian Kennedy this fall, Andrew Cashner the next, and Tyson Ross after 2017. No, none of those guys are true difference makers, but they're quality, Ross and Cashner more so, 2 to 4 starters who have real value and whom the Padres have no prospects to replace when they depart. They can soften the blow by exploiting this year's pitching market in the offseason, since the market will be heavily overcrowded with arms. But with so much money tied into Kemp, Shields, Kimbrel, Gyorko and Melvin Upton's corpse, does a mid market team really have the financial resources to replace two or more starting pitchers? Maybe they could move some names in the offseason, but the Padres biggest trade strength is their pitching. Teams are less likely to give up quality in a trade if they can acquire comparable valuable via free agency while keeping their farm system in tact. The even bigger issue is the everyday lineup. The Padres, as I stated, lack 4 everyday regulars going into next year as well as right now. 2 of those, center and short, are two of the three most important positions on the diamond. They couldn't have flipped anybody to at least nab some league average regulars to plug in there this year or next? Even more than the pitching, there's a giant, gaping hole in the lineup with no readily, realistically available fix in sight. Teams aren't going to be so willing and desperate in the offseason when everybody is on the market scouring for talent. The deadline was a prime opportunity for Preller to expose other teams' willingness to overpay for rentals and Preller missed the boat. My biggest gripe here is the rumor Preller overpriced his available talent. I get the idea is to ask for the moon and settle for less. But to be so daft as to think you have complete bargaining power despite other teams, like the Tigers, A's etc, having similar or better goods they openly wanted to move is a gross overestimating of the actual talent of your roster and a clear overconfidence in oneself. I believe whole heartedly Preller is buying into his own hype as this rock star, mad man gm who can swing any move at any time. Apparently not. And by sitting on his ass as July 31 came and went, he's left with, worst case scenario, a 1st round draft pick for Upton in God know what slot, best case scenario, waiver wire August deals that will likely net far less value as well as limit the market since any team,in contention or not, can claim a player with no intention of acquiring them or working out a deal. I miss Jed Hoyer honestly. He has the nads to admit his teams aren't built for the postseason and tears down and moves assets accordingly. My team's gm would rather deny defeat and push the team into further mediocrity for another handful of years. Oh to be a Padres fan. |
A Padres fan. More like the ex-Braves.
I WANT THEM ALL BACK. :'( ATL |
You can have them. I'll take back Maybin, Peterson and Wisler thank you
|
I think A.J. Preller is gonna get canned after 1 season, Damian. That's just my thought on that.
YOU CAN'T spend all that money, make all those trades, fire the manager, and at the trade deadline, blow everyone off and don't do anything. And tell local sports radio the next day that you think the Padres are gonna go all the way. And there were teams that were offering their top guys for Kimbrel, Upton, and maybe even Shields. If you're gonna take a page out of the George Steinbrenner Book of Running a Baseball Team, you better be damn sure you deliver a team that will give you a World Series that year. |
The Yankees were gonna give up their top shortstop prospect, Jose Mateo, and take on Craig Kimbrel and Jedd Gyorko. That's damn near $20 mil for next year at the least.
You HAVE to make that deal. Preller won't get canned. Ownership ran Josh Byrnes,a solid gm, out of town, then fired Bud Black, all while pushing for big name trades and increasing payroll. Preller is their man. His firing would be ownership admitting fault in telling a once hot to trot gm candidate to tear down the team. They're too proud and pompous to do that. They've been saying they believe in the team since early June. |
Josh Byrnes is not a solid GM.

Woooo Jays win 3 of 4 against K.C.

Fair point. Tulo is an upgrade on both sides of the ball over Reyes, and Price is, well, David Price.
I shutter thinking about how the Jays have arguably the best left side of the infield. I mean, Jesus |
Man Jays haven't been in the playoffs in over 20 years. Would be nice if they got in again but it won't be easy.

Counterpoint
Fuck the blue jays. I hope the Os play them in the wild card game, or better yet I hope the Yankees have to play them. |
Dave Dombrowski relieved as gm. Al Avila takes over. Wonder if it was mutual. Guy turned that organization around.

Apparently the final straw was Mike Illitch didn't want the team to sell at the trade deadline, but Dave did anyways.

Red Sox were rumored to be a possible choice as well but the team has no desire to make an offer for him. Same as the Blue Jays in being rumored as a possible candidate for their vacant president spot. |
I can't say I'm too surprised to see Dombrowski get canned. When you get Illitch to open the wallet to the degree he has and you don't win a title, it's only a matter of time before the hammer drops. And since he effectively waved the white flag by dealing Price and Cespedes to rebuild, Illitch wanted to rebuild the front office too.
At this moment it'd be tough for Tigers fans to not have fond memories of him. When he took over they were a total laughing stock, but he molded them into a perennial contender from 2006 until this year. I'm sure he'll be viewed less favorably in a few years when the Cabrera, Verlander, and V-Mart contracts cripple the team but for right now I can see why teams would be jumping to hire him. |
Dombrowski would probably want GM control.
Angels sent DiPoto packing a month ago. Might be a good place for him to land. |
Tulowitzki and Donaldson both with home runs already. Fuck ya,
|
Dombrowski won't fit in with the Angels as long as Scioscia is there. Scioscia runs the team and is the reason DiPoto walked. Blue Jays seem like a great fix. They draft incredibly well, have the money to make big time deals and their ownership group is seemingly patient enough
The playoffs are such a crap shoot. The Tigers made two world series, dominated their division, hosed the Marlins for one of the best hitters of all time, and were a legitimate powerhouse regardless of what division they played in. Memories of him should be nothing but fond to this point. |
If Trout is #1....Who is the 2nd best player in Baseball?
|
I think Bryce Harper has a currently compelling case. McCutchen has got to be right there as well.
|
If Tulo could average 150 games, he could be legitimately up there as well.
|
GOLDSCHMIDT
|
I'd have to go with Harper as the 2nd best player. Legitimate 5 tool guy. Since he's on the biggest rival of my favorite team I have extra incentive to hate him, but I can't deny his talents.
Only thing that drives me mad about him are his constant ejections for arguing balls and strikes. When he throws temper tantrums like that you can definitely tell that he's a kid who was used to getting his way being coddled from a very young age when he was owning high school ball. |
Woooo Jays win again!
|
If the Mets don't win the World Series in 2015, the Jays would be my second preference. Their lineup is insane, Price is always a joy to watch, and I'll always love R.A. Dickey so would be cool with him getting a ring. Definitely a team that would be fun to watch in October. Plus I love the idea of a team actually being rewarded for going balls out at the deadline.
|
Marco Estrada has been pitching his balls off. If only Hutchison were even decent...ugh.
|
Mets make a post-deadline deal and acquire LHP Eric O'Flaherty for a PTBNL. The better news...Alex Torres designated for assignment to make room for him. Thank christ.
O'Flaherty's ERA is nearly 6 but nearly all the damage came against RHB. He's got a pretty dominant slash line against LHB. As long as Collins only has him face lefties like he should, he'll be great. And he's an automatic upgrade seeing as Torres wasn't usable against ANYBODY. |
Decent debut for Henry Owens in his Red Sox debut.
Bullpen stunk as usual. Took a close and possible winnable game into a blowout win for the Yanks once Owens left. |
Where's RP to bitch about the Cubs?
Where's ruien to talk about how close the white Sox are to the playoffs? |
Wait, Vito. I'm confused. Torres has a 3.20 era and a 120 era+. He's seemingly an at least decent option in terms of run prevention. His FIP is fucking brutal but still, I don't get why you'd want him gone so badly.

A Victoria's Secret model is in the White Sox booth to pimp some new MLB clothing line for women.
1) Nothing like trying to sell shirts and jerseys to women by having the person selling it be a 23 year old size 0. 2) Thank God they had Steve Stone talk to her exclusively and left Hawk on the sidelines for that interview. Ron Santo "interviewing" Denise Richards awhile back was brutal. |
Severino time, kids.
|
Rays signed Daniel Nava from waivers.
|
Brandon Morrow probably needs season ending shoulder surgery. Not surprising though it sucks since he was their best starter before getting hurt.
|
Twins put up 3 in the first and the Jays go and put up 2 in the second off a Donaldson Home Run and 4 in the second off a Bautista Bomb grand slam in the second.
I love this team. |
Except for Drew Hutchison. Good God. Encarnacion with a three run jack! Three Jays now have 20 or more home runs.
|
Mets took a 8-0 lead into the 9th against the hapless Marlins and are about to blow it.
Losing this would pretty much kill any hope I've built over the last week. At the end of the day, they're still the Mets. |
And somehow, they hang on. Mother of fuck. WFAN would have had a field day tomorrow if they had blown it.
|
O'Flaherty gave up 4 runs in 2/3 of an inning, including 3 hits to lefties. So much for being excited about that acquisition lol.

42 year old Latroy Hawkins gets the save.
Lol Drew Hutchison is now 10-2 with a 5.42 ERA. Incredible, |
Wonder what the over/under is on total runs scored during the next Yanks/Jays series.
|
Lol well Hutchison isn't pitching so that should shave 8 runs off the total. I don't think 50 runs total is out of the question in that series.
That series is going to be ridiculous, especially in that ballpark. |
Latroy motherfuckin Hawkins

Red Sox send out Tim Wakefield Jr. AKA Steve Wright last night, goes 8 strong innings, and completely stumps the Yankees.
Solid outing by Severino last night. Too bad the Yankees couldn't hit a lick and get him a win. |
Marcus Stroman might actually be back by September. Amazing.
|
Tigers took a game from KC. KC is not a World Series team (based on this one fact)
|
HOLY SHIT IT'S SKIPPORD!
You handsome bastard, where have you been? Are dead inside now that Gertner gets to call Tulo a Blue Jay? |
Quote:
NESN thinks he's slowly getting to Ace status with rotation which also shows how abysmal the starters have been this season overall. |
Talking about Hawkins caused me to look up how many players who debuted in the big leagues in the 90s are still officially active. Tough to determine the official number given that there are still old-ass players who are free agents but haven't formally retired yet.
But it seems likely that it will dwindle down to the single digits by next year given that Hawkins, Hudson, Aramis, and Burnett have already said they are done after 2015. A guy like Nathan probably won't be returning from major surgery at his age. Hunter hasn't ruled out continuing his career into 2016 but returning to the Twins felt like such a "victory lap" type of thing to do. Pierzynski has been shockingly good this year and should easily find work in 2016 if he wants it, but catching at nearly 40 years old isn't exactly something anybody can pull off. Probably easier to figure out who still will be playing next year. A-Rod of course has 2 years left on his deal, and if he stays as good as he's been this year he might stick around another year past that to clinch the HR record. Beltre has another year under contract. Big Papi has heated up in the last month or so and has 2 more option years, hard to imagine Boston not having him back if he wants to keep playing. Colon has said he wants to keep going. Of the group Beltre easily seems like the best bet to keep playing into 2020 assuming his body holds up. He'd only be 41 during 2020, so if he can keep swinging the bat like he has now he could extend his career as a DH if he wanted. Would be pretty awesome to have someone play a 4th decade in the big leagues. Jesse Orosco narrowly outlasted Rickey Henderson in the 70s-to-00s group. Omar Vizquel was the last man standing in the 80s-to-10s. |
Omar could still play today dammit
Hell in 2012 (before we got Iglesias) he teased suiting up at SS for the Tigers |
Vizquel ops+'d 50 his last season. He definitely retired at the right time.
|
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...n_four_decades
There are actually more 4-decade players than I realized, although they're understandably becoming rarer and rarer. Beltre is definitely the 90's best (and possibly only realistic) hope to add another one to the list. @ the 5 decade players. Shame that probably won't ever happen again since 40-man roster spots aren't likely to be used on publicity stunts at this point. Otherwise, Julio Franco almost definitely would have gotten that honor. He still plays in Japan at 56 years old. |
hahahaha fuck you KC
fuck youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu Chris Pratt wins |
Jays offence is ridiculous

Mike Napoli returning to the Rangers after a trade between them and the Red Sox. Happened right before tonight's Sox-Tigers game.
Rangers get Mike Napoli and cash while Red Sox get a TBA player. |
Scott Podsenick is in the booth with Hawk tonight. Didn't think a sox broadcast could be worse. Pods is just sucking Hawks dick and mumbling. Half an inning spent comparing Hawk to Mickey Mantle.

he's mumbling because his mouth is full of Hawk's dick.
