Sony officially axes their Playstation Rewards program for now and could end up canceling the entire thing as of today. The news comes arpund the same time Microsoft's announcement of starting a new "freebie" program and Nintendo's start of the U.S. Play Coins program.
Rumors range from Sony redoing the entire program to better compete with Nintendo Club and other free programs to dropping the program because it was getting too expensive to keep (ex. paid vacations to gaming conventions and studios). The forums for Sony are split between making the program only for paid members (Playstation Plus) while others want non-paying members to have the same access to the program. Sony's original policy was to allow everyone to join but preference to paying users for membership. http://fastcache.gawkerassets.com/as...ps_rewards.jpg http://kotaku.com/#!5786588/sony-nix...ewards-program -------------------------------------------------------------- Nintendo confirms the plans for the moment do not include adding 3D for their next console. A few reasons would be due to costs for both the consumer and production being too high and they want the 3DS enough time to have the "3D" features as a selling point. Nintendo's main goal is to have 3D without the glasses for their consoles and at the moment its not practical and too expensive for their style of games and development. |
It would make sense for the rewards program to be for paying costumers.
|
It would if it was purchase based like Club Nintendo but I think the way Sony's program worked involved Sony Home and stuff that didn't require purchases. It also seemed to be a mix between Club Nintendo and the free betas/giveaways Microsoft does every so often.

More details concerning Microsoft's updating of their disc format will give 1 GB extra of disc space for developers to use but the added protection might not be as strong as expected.
The extra GB in space appears to be coming from the video partition of the restricted part of the disc. The extra space ends up giving developers about 15% more space to work with in their games. Not even a day after the announcement, a hacker managed to get info on the tools and setup Microsoft will be using for the new protection. The new protection uses a lot more checks and loops but on a modified setup of the current protection system. http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/pics/re...3_expanded.png http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/8...acy-detection/ |

The Captain America video looks like it could be a good game, but the Thor one doesn't look all that good to me. Live action actor Thor just doesn't look right in a game, maybe I'm just resistant to change, but it would sit a lot better with me if they stuck to the art style characters for the game. I mean I realize it's a movie tie in and such, but you can have a standalone Thor game come out and not feature the actor.
|
You certainly could, but movie tie-ins are pretty much protocol at this point. There will certainly be alt attire with classic costumes in both games, if that makes you feel better.
The games have bigger issues than attire anyway. Good luck to them. |

I mean the video for Cap at least looks interesting and it looks like it has a little variance to the gameplay at points. Thor just looks...meh. I mean I'm certainly willing to give it a chance, but the first impression it's given me isn't all that good. |

No, but I was railed for daring to announce that last year so maybe another poster can tell you about the game. I played about an hour of it and found the combat cute but the whole game a misfiring.
I'm mostly just butthurt the series isn't open-world anymore. |
That makes sense.
I was looking at it, and parts of it seemed interesting, like the Noir section and 2099 section, but the other 2 storyarcs seemed way too similar for my taste. Also I was just checking the achievements just to get a sample of some of what some of the missions would be like and I see they're timed. That kills it for me, I like to take my time and explore the levels and I doubt you'd be able to do that and still get the "platinums" as they call them. |
Shattered Dimensions was a pretty damn dull game.
|
I never finished it, hated the Noir parts.

Sony Online Entertainment confirms massive layoffs are occurring at 3 of their US studios as part of the restructuring that started earlier in the year when SOE also has layoffs at 3 of their UK studios. The news comes after the recent release of Free Realms and DC Universe Online.
Some of the fired workers will be moved to other Sony studios or higher priority projects but the majority will just be let go. These are not the usual QA and testers that are done by most studios after a game is released but the core developer teams. The Agency MMO has been canceled due to lack of funds and manpower while the sales from DC Universe Online doesn't appear to be good when compared to the amount of money spent to get the DC character deals and development costs. Traditionally, Sony has a bad history of maintaining and finishing most of their MMO projects with the exception of the Everquest series. http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/pics/ma...4_expanded.jpg http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/8...im-the-agency/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Silicon Knights lawsuit against Epic Games set to go to court pretty soon with SK arguing Epic Games purposely gave inferior versions of their Unreal Engine development kits to paying studios as a way of making sure games from Epic looked the best with the engine. Nintendo being rumored to have another massive surprise E3 showing with a lot of games to be revealed for a late 2011 release date (similar to Kirby's Epic Yarn last year).
The rumor is based on the UK branch of Nintendo saying that there are big plans for the 2nd half of the year with games and news. This comes along with another report confirming Xenoblade will be released outside of Japan for Europe later this year to early 2012 and a TBA for a US/Canada release date. Also leaked was Dragon Quest X is nearing completion on development for the Wii and could arrive later this year or early 2012. As of now just the new Kirby game and Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword are the big names for the 2nd half of the year on the Wii. http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/pics/ni...6_expanded.jpg http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/8...wii-this-year/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Telltale Games announces the first episode for the Back to the Future episodic series is now free for PC and Mac users. |

New details for Ninja Gaiden III confirm multiplayer and a "Dark Ryu" character in the game.
The new mulitplayer and gameplay changes are meant to let more people be able to enjoy the game while at the same time keeping some of the hard aspects the series is known for. For those who have had some issues with PSN or Sony's websites the last day or two, Anonymous revealed they are attacking Sony's web services as a counter to Sony's recent fight against piracy.
Specifically, Anonymous biggest complaint and reason for the attacks against Sony comes from the recent victory in court allowing Sony to get information and IPs of anyone who either has donated to Geohot or visited his website regardless of reason. Weeks earlier, Sony had threatened to sue Paypal and a few others if they continued to provide customer service to him. The group also warned Sony that this was only the first attack and it could get worse if Sony continues going after everyone else not related to the Geohot group. Officially, Sony claims the downtime was due to "maintenance" and never referenced the web attacks. PSN and other Sony websites have either been restored back to normal or keep experiencing sporadic service. http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/pics/ha...5_expanded.png http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/8...-threat-video/ |

Bioware and EA holding a special promotion where if you buy Dragon Age II for the PC before April 30, Mass Effect 2 for the PC will be free as a gift.
Buying DA II for consoles does count towards getting Mass Effect 2 for free but only the PC version of the game is being given away. Also required for the deal is tying the Dragon Age II into your Bioware account and activating the Online Pass that comes with the game. Used copies of Dragon Age II are not eligible for the deal. http://media1.gameinformer.com/image...2/hawke610.jpg http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/a...r-pc-free.aspx ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EA had been planning to release Dead Space 2 for the Wii as a way to listen to complaints of those who were upset the 1st Dead Space game was a rail shooter and to make up for a disappointing Wii release schedule by EA. EA realized they couldn't afford another PR hit similar to the NBA Jam debacle and lose more of the Wii market to Activision. |

I don't understand why Spidey games can't go back to the open world setting. Spider-Man 2 was easily the best Spider-Man game and it was probably because of that. They tried to do it with Web of Shadows but they fucking blew it. My dream Spidey game would be like Spidey 2 with tons of side missions around the city, a nice amount of villains and Marvel Comics cameos please.

I also would like to see a proper open-world Spidey, the type works for him.

Sony manages to forget all their hardship on making the PSP and PS3 a bit too expensive by stating in a press report that Sony isn't concerned about pricing their platforms (and games on a whole).
The boss of Sony tried to say that its better for a product to be seen as enjoyable for years and more valuable in features than in its initial or current price. This announcement comes after Sony's recent success of the PS3 sales at lower prices and after admitting the $600 PS3 price was a mistake. Quote:
Sony is also planning on putting some priority on 3D and Move-enabled games for their future success with the PS3. http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/8...tform-pricing/ -------------------------------------------------------------------- Some upcoming games news: Namco announces Galaga Legions DX is in development from the same team who made Pac-Man CE and will have similar gameplay style and appearance. Nintendo of America might be bringing The Last Story rpg to the US/Canada after filing for a website domain for the game. Currently just Europe is confirmed to get the game later this year. EA reveals NBA Jam: On Fire Edition will arrive this fall and this time as a downloadable game for XBLA and PSN with a retail disc version possible. EA managed to ignore making a Wii version even though NBA Jam on the Wii was responsible for over 50% of the sales. |

I wanna be Peter Parker. This game can happen. |
I am sure some of you guys remember X-Men Legends when you got to do those Flashback missions like Juggernaut raiding the X-Mansion, etc. That would be incredible as unlockable quests for a Spidey game. Relive famous moments..the death of Gwenn Stacy for example. I would love a tutorial at the start of the game in which Parker remembers when he got his powers. Perfect for learning the moves. I don't know..I feel like the Spidey game potential has not been tapped to it's max potential yet.
|
They were getting there with Spidey 2 (Movie Game) but they just... abandoned it with Ultimate Spidey (high concept with adjusted system) and then Spidey 3 (poor design decisions influenced by industry). Friend or Foe was actually cute and okay, obviously away from a 'main game' thing. Web of Shadows was another high concept that missed the mark (but had an interesting action game design at least). Some of you may remember my disdain for Shattered Dimensions last year. My views on EoT isn't much better so far.
The ultimate Spidey game is yet to come. |
EA has listened to complaints about SSX Deadly Descent by now renaming the game to just SSX and announcing more game modes to go along with the Deadly Descent mode.
The gritty look and gameplay from previous trailers and images are still in the game but when playing Tricky or Speed Descent, the graphics and gameplay resemble more of the cartoony stuff SSX is known for. Tricky Descent mode focuses on the classic trick style for races while Speed Descent focuses on the actual competition and speed for races. http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets...4/ssxredux.jpg http://kotaku.com/#!5789663/all-hope...or-the-new-ssx -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous war against Sony continues as the group issues 3 new demands with the biggest demand being for Sony to stop going after IP address and information of people not related to the Geohot lawsuit. PSN and other Sony websites are still experiencing unstable performance with Sony admitting the hacking was the real reason and they were not doing any real "maintenance." More bad news for Sony as their DMCA lawsuit against Geohot and others appears to be loosing due to Sony wanting to enable a provision meant only for wireless cellphones to be allowed for the PS3. Their lawsuit also appears to be switching focus from getting information to help their case to now getting as many names possible for future lawsuits unrelated to the current case. |
Played the 3DS the other day. Not impressed by the 3D at all. Didn't like it, felt like nothing more than a gimmick and added absolutely nothing to the games. If I ever get one (wayyyy down the line), I'll be playing with 3D off.

I guess you can settle with holding a Gamecube in your hands. My condolences.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, the power of the system itself is impressive. But really, outside of Mario, there's absolutely nothing on the system I need to play anyway (in terms of games that have been announced).
|
Sony's Jack Tretton trashes the Gameboy/DS and people who play them by saying it is an embarrassment to be over 20+ years old to play those systems and Nintendo only makes "baby sitting tools".
This was also part of another trash talk saying Nintendo doesn't innovate or do anything special after he made fun of their motion controls and the lack of stuff the Wii doesn't have. Quote:
He also trashed the Xbox 360 by saying its running out of steam and that Sony will easily close the gap and pass it in 2011. He sort of forgot the impact Kinect sales had in both units and games sold (2-3x more than PS Move and games). http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/pics/pl...9_expanded.jpg http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/8...sitting-tools/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mega Man Legends 3 development team has officially restarted their development of the game after Capcom stopped work due to the earthquakes and Mega Man's creator leaving the company. Nintendo is preparing to buy up more studios but want a few to be of quality like Retro Studios. This could end up bringing Silicon Knights and Eternal Darkness 2 back to Nintendo if that studio gets picked. Splinter Cell HD trilogy set for the PS3 will not be based on the inferior PS2 versions of the game but the PC versions. The worst news is the online multiplayer will not be enabled for the old games. |

Electronic Arts tinkering with the idea of progressive career modes that carry over from game to game instead of always having to start from scratch with each new game.
Most likely FIFA or Madden will be the 1st game to include this feature but it isn't expected to occur with this year's set of games (2012 set). It is also rumored should EA bring back the MVP baseball series, this would be the first game to use it to counter The Show's features on the PS3. EA is calling this plan a Persistent Player Profile and would affect any career or My Player mode found in their sports games. Quote:
EA did try something similar in the past with the EA Sports Bio that tied games from the same sports series or all EA Sports games into a single account. Bioware's plans for a future Mass Effect game after ME 3 is released might involve making the next game in the series as an MMO.
The idea behind an MMO comes from Bioware wanting to add some type of multiplayer experience without rushing it for the sake of having one (ex. Dead Space 2) but as a way to expand the story and galaxy into something bigger. Quote:
http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/8...o-makes-sense/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Creator and lead engineer in the development of game cartridges as a way to hold games instead of pre-built into a console died on Sunday, April 10. Jerry Lawson worked on the development team behind the Fairchild Channel F console in 1976 which ended up being the first console to use swappable game cartridges. Before this system, most consoles either had pre-built games or used floppy cards to help boot the program (game wasn't on the floppy itself). Atari would end up using this idea behind the Atari 2600 which ended up becoming the first very successful game console with the mainstream consumers. |

What's the story? In this version of Dead Rising 2, Frank West went from high profile hero and celebrity to washed up has-been after the events of Dead Rising. Broke after launching a failed line of hair restoration products, Frank has come to Fortune City to appear on Terror is Reality and to revive his career - and get paid. After all, Frank is infected, which means every 24 hours, he'll need a dose of Zombrex to avoid a fate involving shuffling around, looking for people to eat. It's not DLC? Dead Rising 2: Off the Record is a full featured, full length retail release. Unlike the prequel Dead Rising 2: Case Zero or sequel Dead Rising 2: Case West, Off the Record will not be available as DLC. What's returning? The framework of events for Off the Record seems largely the same - a bizarre conspiracy is unfolding in Fortune City, setting free its zombie horde and trapping a group of citizen survivors in the city until help can arrive in 72 hours. Of course, not everything is the same. There are new areas of the Fortune City complex to explore, including new Psychos and new events, while most if not all of the old Psychos remain in the game. Also returning: combo weapons. There will also be new combo weapons available to Frank, though Capcom is mum on what those will be. What's new? While it's not new, Dead Rising 2: Off the Record does feature the return of the camera mechanic from Dead Rising, with improvements. For example, this time Frank is sporting a digital camera - no more searching for film. Frank will want to capture key plot moments to help expose the Fortune City conspiracy. Where's Chuck? Chuck is still in Fortune Ciy, though we don't know his whereabouts. However, Capcom has confirmed that partners in co-op will play Chuck to the main player's Frank. |

In somewhat of a surprising announcement, Nintendo announced the remake of Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time for the 3DS was not developed by one of Nintendo's internal studios but outsourced to a new studio that has some former ties with Square-Enix.
Nintendo hand-picked Grezzo Games to develop the game which has some experience working with Nintendo in the past with their recent game coming last year on WiiWare. This studio was formed in 2006 after Koichi Ishii, creator of the Mana rpg series and worked on 5 of the earlier Final Fantasy games, left Square-Enix The studio hasn't been alone in working on the project with input and advice coming from Nintendo to help with the enhanced port of the N64 game. The 3DS version is set to arrive in stores on June 19 for the US/Canada and June 17 for the UK/Europe. http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/pics/ni...0_expanded.jpg http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/8...a-of-time-3ds/ |

Yeah the bigger shocker was everyone assuming it was Nintendo working on the port after all the news was of how Nintendo was fixing and improving the game. If it was Capcom making the game, then it would have been revealed in the press much sooner like Nintendo usually does.

Some Capcom news ranging from good to a bit weird.
Capcom wants to get more user feedback for Mega Man Legends 3 designs with the current vote involving the design for Mega Man Volnnut. Don't expect anything else from Marvel vs Capcom 3 once the current set of DLC characetrs and modes are released as the team behind the game announced they are done working on the project and are ready to move on to the next project. In a question about how thick Chun-Li's thighs should be, Yoshinori Ono said when designing Chun-Li for a game, his response was "The simple answer to that is: I am looking for the perfect thigh to rest my head on. "Multiple sources" are talking about a Wii that's more powerful than eveyrthing out right now to be announced at E3.
I'll belive it when I see it. |
Wouldn't that just make it a more powerful Playstation Move?
|
I don't know... it just doesn't seem like Nintendo's style to out class people on a technical trip. It wouldn't be the first time, but they've spent many years telling us how that wasn't their bag anymore. So these rumors are highly suspect - but rarely have I seen such unified reports on rumblings.
I expected this year's E3 to be a safe, fan-friendly event. Did not expect this. And certainly not from Nintendo. |
If the rumored predictions are true, then the next generation would end up as Nintendo in 2012, Microsoft in 2013, and Sony 2014 but could be forced to 2013 release.
It is also possible Nintendo could be using their new disc format for the Wii 2 since they are a member of a disc group (forgot the name of the disc). Also since they are carrying over DSi games to the 3DS, it shouldn't be hard for them to carry Wii VC and Wiiware to the next Wii system. |

According to Bioware, one of the reasons Mass Effect became a series was due to the studio's decision to drop development on Jade Empire 2 and go with a new RPG-style series influenced by Star Wars Knights of the Republic.
When Jade Empire was released on the original Xbox, it was met with great reviews and customer support but a lack of sales hurt the chances of a sequel. The success of Star Wars Knights of the Republic made Bioware switch focus from a potential Jade Empire 2 to a new IP which later became Mass Effect. Since Star Wars KotR ended up becoming very popular with its sci-fi setting and shooting segments, Bioware decided to use that game as the template when designing Mass Effect 1 and the ME series. If the game was meant to have been completed, original plans were for a release on a trio of platforms (PC, Xbox 360, PS3) instead of just one. The first game was released on the PC but only 2 years after the Xbox game and by then too late to help since Mass Effect 1 was in development. http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets...11/04/jade.jpg http://kotaku.com/#!5791912/could-we...de-empire-game |
Pfft, not an excuse to ignore Jade Empire. A sequel would have been interesting.

Def love that game. A sequel would probably have had an awkward story, but a great engine.

Kinect owners across the country can now use their hands to control Netflix thanks to the latest update from Microsoft. By using hand or voice commands, you're able to browse through your library.
Don't put down that controller yet. If you actually want to play a movie, you're still required to enter that command from an Xbox 360 controller. The folks at Joystiq gave Microsoft a call for some clarification on this and it turns out that while you can play "recommended films" through a special Kinect dashboard, anything in your normal queue is a no go. Theres no way Nintendo could put out hardware that wasn't more powerful than the other two current consoles are now and then have it get blasted into uselessness in a year or so by whatever Sony and Microsoft come up with for their next consoles. A "Wii but in HD" will fail miserably.

Droford shut up.

More rumors concerning the upcoming Wii 2 involves a leaked early spec sheet, the project being named "Project Cafe", and the controller being compared to an iPad with buttons.
Rumored feedback from developers and insider sources who heard or seen the controller have them ranging from being completely amazed to believing it could end up as one of the best things ever created for video games. Also rumored was as weird and advanced the controller sounds, Nintendo will keep the costs low to fit their current affordability model. Quote:

I imagine the touch screen portion will allow you to design your face buttons in some fashion. Otherwise it sounds closer to the PS3/360 controllers which is cool.
More interested in the online features. |
Touch screen controllers sounds like a terrible idea.
Also, if Aaron Rodgers makes the Madden cover I hope he does his Title Belt pose.. |
Says Droford to Nin-fucking-tendo.
