Train to Busan- 10/10

Might be the best Zombie movie I've ever seen. Great characters, amazing tension, and the zombies themselves are awesome. The way they twist and contort is really unnerving.

SPOILER: show

Was so happy when the old lady opened that door. Fuck those people.

Also, no zombie movie has ever punched me in the gut like the ending to this film. That kid deserves whatever the korean equivalent of an oscar is, for that scene alone.

Yeah, 6 out of 10 was a little harsh, tbh. Probably more of a 7 for me.

Heard good things about this movie. Tried watching it, but it just reminded me I can't watch Asian movies. I can't tell the actors apart.

Ya it's the best i've seen. It didnt need to be dark and creepy to build tension and it didnt rely on jump scares. That little girl was incredible. The dad was great. The guy that played the husband of the pregnant woman was fantastic and he's gonna be playing Gilgamesh in The Eternals. I got a huge crush on that cheerleader. I want to do bad things with her.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood - 9/10

I thought this was good!

A lil slow in the middle. Kind of made me want to live in L.A. in the 60's (or Tarantino's version of it). Leo was great (duh). Brad was great (duh). It's not what you're expecting, which makes sense via being a Tarantino film.

Seanny One Ball 07-27-2019 12:54 AM

SPOILER: show
Judging by what I've seen and heard Quentin Tarantino has rewritten history with a B movie ending and as usual people think it's just brilliant, classic Tarantino.
Now, with that in mind... is it as stupid as Inglorious Basterds?

Some trustworthy names have raved about it but I get the feeling it's liable to really make me mad. I really hope I just misinterpreted the reviews.

slik 07-27-2019 02:20 AM

SPOILER: show

It's essentially a spaghetti western set in 60's Hollywood and Yes, it has a very different ending than real life, which while a surprise at the time, made perfect sense as the protagonists of this movie are very much Leo and Brad, both of whom are great. I think more people will like Brad's character than Leo (though they'll like Leo's too) because Pitt's character is a total badass.

slik 07-27-2019 02:23 AM

I'd say this, along with Avengers: Endgame, has been my favorite film this year so far.

Seanny One Ball 07-27-2019 03:11 AM

Tarantino's first film away from Miramax coincidentally has Hollywood's original famous rapist in it. That's strange.
I'm not insinuating anything there btw, I even checked the Polanski petition. No Tarantino.

Midsommer - 2.5 / 4

Did you like The Wicker Man? Swap out a cop with unsuspecting tourists and you've got a remake.

It was ok and all. Nothing I'm going to dwell on or act like its a breakout movie of the summer.

Frank Drebin 07-27-2019 06:37 PM

Spiderman: Far From Home: 2.5 / 4

Nothing here really to hate but it just felt unnecessary. First half was rather dull. I like movies to slow down and do some character building without a punch of "pew-pew" action but the Peter/MJ thing for the millionth time doesn't do it for me especially with Zendaya as MJ. I think I saw a half smile once but other than that her face never changed. It's like they know her limitations but the studio told them they had to shoehorn her in so they gave her the essensce of an emotionless goth so they could have a built in excuse for why she sucks. Everytime she was on screen I was taken out of the movie because all I could think was "this is a shit character played by a shit actor".

Second half picked up a bit after we finally got the turn we knew would happen but overall this will go in the lower half of the Marvel movies for me. Somewhere around Age of Ultron level where this movie is just a tacked on bridge to something else....where ever they choose to go with things now.

Seanny One Ball 07-27-2019 07:57 PM

Is Laura Harrier in it? I went to check Wiki but the state they have left that Spiderman page in is a disgrace. Every cast member gets multi paragraphs instead of a basic cast breakdown. Fucking dicks.

Once upon a Time in Hollywood: 9/10

a reserve the right to change this based on how i feel after a second viewing.

SPOILER: show
the misdirection might be the most brilliant piece of writing ive ever seen. Audiences are told prior that its about the mansons so you enter the film with built in drama but NONE of the tension is generated by the film itself; its all created by the veiwer so when the film subverts that expection and reveals that "once upon a time" was literal its a wild revelation. Never seen anyone work an audience like that.

I would hate to have the factoid spoiled prior because my concern is without the premise established externally the film has no stakes and potentially no plot.

It's a big artistic/interpretive failing of mine, I admit it. I cannot stand that.

Will have to watch.

Bohemian Rhapsody- 7/10

Queen is my favorite band so i avoided this since these things are never very faithful. Music is is great, mostly because they play real tracks or demo recordings so all of the audio is authentic. like all biopics though the story meanders about aimlessly until its able to find some conflict. Life just isnt a narrative. That said as far as biopics go this is probably one of the very best. Everyone in it is excellent and when theres drama its compelling.

Im going to get to going back to the movies a lot with Regal releasing their unlimited program probably tomorrow. Theyre going to allow you to watch as many movies a day as you can watch provided the next movie starts 90 minutes after the current movie.
Stupid thing is my theatre in the middle of fucking nowhere is in the top tier with regal theatres in LA SF Boston NYC Vegas, which is ridiculous

The Professor and The Madman 4 out of 5 stars

I watched this on an airplane and loved it. It's about the making of the first English dictionary. Mel Gibson is a Scottish professor tasked with leading the charge on the first ever English Dictionary whilst Sean Penn plays an American doctor with mental problems and the only way that he seems to calm his psychosis is through rigorous research and work in aiding the development of the dictionary. The movie has good reviews and bad, it's not a "best picture" movie but I really enjoyed it. I keep thinking about it and the performances. Also it is a true story and that makes it really special.

RP 07-30-2019 08:37 AM

Pet - 8/10 - This movie was way better than I thought it would be. It's about a creepy guy that runs into a hot chick he used to go to high school with on the bus. And he starts following her and sending her flowers and obviously creeps her out. He ends up kidnapping her and putting her in a cage. This sounds like your basic Fallen Angel scenario. But, it's not. There's a huge twist. It happens in the middle of the movie and it basically changes everything you thought this movie would end up being about. The lead male and lead female were fantastic. The female being the standout of the movie. The male is the guy from Lost and played a hobbit in LoTR's. If you like a psychological thrillers with a touch of gore, you'll really like this. The twist is pretty damn good.

Streets of Fire 7/10

An action musical in a 1950s/1980s setting. The acting and dialogue leave much to be desired, but not going to lie, I enjoyed it; a strange mix.

This requires a proper review.

I think I liked it better than Get Out

Seanny One Ball 08-07-2019 07:50 PM

Us - 4/4

Jordan Peele has made another masterpiece.
In description this falls under the "high concept" category and all things considered this is a marvellous piece of trickery.
Drawn in by the promise of a horror film with levity an unsuspecting audience will almost immediately be at ease with the tone.
After half an hour this tone blurs and distorts like a funhouse mirror, the comfort atrophies as the creeping horror fattens into a perpetual feeling of disgust, mistrust and anxiety.
Then for moments I was allowed mild respite from the terror of what might, replaced once more with a resurgent swell of hope.
The tonal shifts, the atmospheric terraforming are stunning in their own right, but they are accompanied by some of the most incredible uses of soundtrack that I have ever experienced.
When the climactic scene between Lupita's occurs I can already count two previous uses of the same piece of music in different forms which should have rendered the tune a gimmick and yet which instead have engrained it deeply into the heart of the film.
The tune becomes three different things, first a piece of comfort comedy, secondly a resurgence of faith in the success of the hero and lastly a dynamic soundtrack to a piece of murderous choreography akin to a beautiful Kung Fu scene or as is shown, a classical ballet.
I am beholden unto this film for restoring my faith in surprises, though one large surprise I telegraphed almost immediately and did not let go of for the entire duration of the film.
It changed nothing, if you catch the main twist early on which an observant viewer will then you may worry that the ending shall now be unsatisfactory which thankfully the film accounts for and provides an unspoken yet surprisingly cheerful "Get over it!" in response.
The cast were all wonderful, particularly Lupita Nyong'o. That is a lot of acting to do for one person in a film and it's probably the best dual role I can name off the top of my head because traditionally they tend to go wrong or are placed in a weaker film.
I haven't felt like writing proper reviews lately, I was pretty sure I wasn't going to write anything besides my opinions ever again but this is a truly appropriate and brilliant follow up to a promising young director's first masterpiece, now cementing him as a powerhouse in the horror genre.
I am grateful for the respite in the form of timely humour and tunes, this shows Jordan Peele to be a damned good sport and a man intent on making the film palatable beyond a fully nightmarish theme.

This is the best film I have seen for months and I honestly think it may be one of the best horror films I have ever seen. Not that I have seen very many at all.
I can't say it is as satirical or as fully conceived as "Get Out" but it is definitely a shining example of what can be done to make full use of a cast and a small setting with an excellently developed storyline and performances.

Scary Stores To Tell In The Dark - 7/10

I think Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark would be a fun horror movie for kids to watch and get into horror.

It's nowhere near as creepy as the books (how could it be), more of a throwback horror flick, kind of bland at times but all the horror set-pieces are pretty fun. I had no idea it took place in the 60's and I liked all the 60's aesthetics of suburbia.

Jordan 08-11-2019 11:31 AM

Angst (or Fear) 1983 (German) - 3/5

This is a really disturbing movie, very simple and realistic story. A long term psychotic criminal lies his way to rehabilitation in prison and once released lets loose his pent up fantasies. The acting is documentary good. I wouldn't really have any critique for a movie like this is just is what it is. The camera work is what makes the film so disturbing. You really take a ride with the lead and he's a fucking psycho. I bet they shot this movie easily under 2 or 3 weeks. I recommend it. Watched it on Shudder.
