Got to watch that gif in slow motion while it loaded. Even if you go by where the ball was caught, it was still a strike.

screech 08-13-2013 02:42 PM

I remember in one Sega game, MLBPA baseball in 1994, once in a while two umpires would meet at home plate and overturn a called strike or ball.

1994. Come on, Bud, get with it.

screech 08-15-2013 09:35 PM

Though will it lead to a drop off in managers arguing so not every "visit" counts as a challenge?

If so, it's good Pinella and Cox have retired.

The Condor 08-16-2013 01:35 AM

Did some driving at work today, listened to some ESPN radio. A lot of the guys bitching about how MLB needed replay are now picking out the things wrong with the replay proposal that hasn't even been voted on. ESPN's relation with baseball is like the IWC with the current WWE product.

Where's Screech?

Charlie Manuel out, Ryne Sandberg in.

Hall of fame players who become managers never do well. Sandberg is a dick anyway. He was butthurt when the Cubs didn't want him to manage the big league club.

Evil Vito 08-16-2013 03:19 PM

The Phillies are dummies. Manuel is a good manager. He's not the reason for the struggling. How about firing the guy who gave Ryan Howard 5 years and $125 million?

Just realized Ichiro is coming up on 4000 hits a pro.

Think that will factor in his career when hes up for the hall? Dude could make 3000 in the US if he can plunk together another full season and a half. So it might not matter.

If anyone talks about him catching Pete rose, its BS.

The Condor 08-16-2013 03:58 PM

The Japanese hits do not count. Japan is essentially a slightly higher version of AAA. 3000 is almost a given, though.

Hate this. Nothing against Sandberg personally, but Charlie was not the reason the team had been playing poorly. You can only do so much with so many injured and underachieving players.

Fuck.

ClockShot 08-16-2013 04:54 PM

Agreed. Charlie Manuel had no reason to get canned. Ruben Amaro should have traded away half the roster since they're the ones who all flipped the off switch.

Not sure who's contracts are up when it comes to managers (I know Girardi's is), but I'd be calling him the second the season is over if I was an owner/gm.

McLegend 08-16-2013 06:09 PM

To be fair, Manuel will be 70 before next season. He might be content to just hang 'em up at this point.

I'm still baffled by this. Amaro drove Pat Gillick's well-built team into the ground and spent twice as much money doing it.

So what's the deal with Jerry Remy up in Boston. Big news of out of there is that his kid got indicted for murder of his girlfriend. He pleaded not guilty today.

NESN and/or Red Sox front office might make him step aside from broadcasting until it all settles so they avoid bad press?

Emperor Smeat 08-16-2013 08:43 PM

Either that or for him to have some time off to deal with recent family issues and not become too stressed that it affects his health again.

Been having some health problems in recent years where Eckersley would fill in during long road trips or just whenever he did too many games in a row.

Sometimes the Giants score 14 runs in a game. But they make sure to do it when their pitcher doesn't put together a quality start to waste.

Frank Drebin 08-17-2013 03:10 AM

Fuck Ryan Brain. Just saying that.

Also that Felix Doubront pitch that soriano hit out.....can't believe a major league starter threw that.

Soriano always has a two week stretch where he goes nuts. When everyone stops throwing low fastballs, he will stop hitting dingers. Still, Hell of a comeback to ny.

RoXer 08-18-2013 02:37 PM

What do you think, The Fraze? Do you think the Giants can make a comeback for the division or are you ready to call it quits? 17 games back is hard to make up but there's a lot of division games left. I suppose anything can happen.

RoXer 08-18-2013 02:38 PM

Only 13.5 for the wild card. Seems doable.

The Fraze 08-18-2013 02:42 PM

What do I honestly think? Season's over, probably. What will I keep saying because I won't ever give up on any of my teams no matter how bad they are? We're not out until the math says so.

Used to watch all the games with my dad in the mid-90's when we were bottom dwellers.

RoXer 08-18-2013 02:46 PM

Yeah. Seems like the wild card is the best chance. Obviously the Dbacks are in a better position to take the the division than the Giants and I still don't like their chances. But you never know. All it takes is a blowup from the Dodgers. Or the enivitble blowup from Pittsburgh. How great would it be if they choked and wound up 80-82. Hilarious.

One thing we're both in agreement about: Fuck the Dodgers.

The Fraze 08-18-2013 02:54 PM

I will not be able to stand the Dodgers going to/winning the WS. It will make me legitimately angry, they're the Raiders of baseball. I don't think the Giants will end up in last place in the NL West, maybe third. Not that the third place team in the NL West isn't embarrassing, it's just "less" embarrassing. Hoping the Pirates don't collapse. They deserve it.

The Fraze 08-18-2013 04:08 PM

There's a stretch Hummer in my driveway. Mounted on top of the Hummer is a giant fiberglass head. Wearing a Yankees hat. The head is smiling. I can see that because it's illuminated by spotlights.

"Hey, Jetes," booms a voice from the speaker in the giant head's mouth.

I speak into the intercom. "Are you in there, Alex?"

"Nope. Still in Boston. Did you see the game tonight?"

"I did."

"They hit me, Jetes."

"I know they did."

"Hit me for playing baseball."

"It might be more complicated than that."

"I'm just exercising my collectively bargained right to play, Jetes. They know that."

"It was very upsetting."

"Did you see my home run?"

"I did."

"Total bomb. A-bomb for A-Rod."

"Very impressive."

"I'm back, Jetes."

"That's great, Alex."

"They've awakened the sleeping giant."

"OK."

"The sleeping giant is me, Jetes."

"That's good to hear. We could use it."

"Centaur mode."

"A centaur's not a giant."

"It's a giant centaur."

"I'm going back to bed, Alex."

"Giant centaur mode activated."

"Yeah, I got it. Can I go back to bed now?"

"Fine."

"Good night, Alex,"

"Sweet dreams, Jetes."

I watch as the top of the giant A-Rod head slowly splits opens to reveal a smaller A-Rod. An A-Rod torso mounted on a horse's body.

It's holding a bow.

And it fires a tiny fireworks arrow that explodes over the house.

Bob Sheppard's voice booms through the mansion again.

"Num-ber Two, Der-ek Je-ter. You are in grave dan-ger."

"Num-ber Two."

I put a pillow over my head, roll over, and go back to sleep.

Braves losing Heyward (possibly for the early playoffs) is awful. He's been the only decent leadoff hitter the Braves have had all year. Schafer is going to have to produce, and BJ needs to figure his shit out right now.

I expect no such thing, it's what any Braves fan wants right now. It's not like he's going anywhere for the next four years (most likely).

Boomer 08-22-2013 01:04 AM

I just don't like players like him (and frankly this goes for any sport) who seem to blame their troubles so much on stupid things like the umpire calling strikes that they think are balls. That mentality is basically evident every time BJ comes up to the plate.

But, you know, BJ figured himself out in the second half last year, so it could happen. It's just not likely, having watched 95% of his at-bats this year.

Boomer 08-22-2013 01:06 AM

Also, at this point, I fully expect a Mets fan to accidentally murder Chipper Jones in a hunting accident to complete the trifecta of unintentionally taking out Braves players this year.

DaveWadding 08-22-2013 01:11 AM

According to ESPN its because the Indians still weren't willing to offer Dice-K a spot on the main roster and the Mets top prospects are too close to their innings limit. Nobody else was really interested in Dice-K besides the Mets once he became available.
