You Were Never Really Here-7/10

Joaquin Phoenix plays a former military/FBI man now working as a hired gun finding missing children outta sex rings.

Gets hired by a politician and shit goes awry after he initially saves the politicians wife.

It's deliberately paced, and Phoenix, thru, very little dialogue and mostly physical presence, is magnetic in his performance of a man tormented by his past not only in combat and the field, but thru his abusive father and victimized, abused mother.

The story itself is small in scale and intimate in story. It's violence is brutal but at the same time subtle and controlled.

I'm not sure I enjoyed it but I'd certainly recommend it as an experience.

Blade Runner meets Terminator meets Venom.

A man is brutally disabled in what less and less becomes a random murder. He is implanted with a sentient nervous system that eventually helps him detect and track down those responsible for his position in life, building to a dramatic and saddening climax.

Really liked the lead. Reminds me of what the Venom/Eddie Brock symbiote relationship was, but done way better in a much more focused, engaging and interesting movie with a pretty neat if not predictable plot twist.

The Dead Don't Die - 6/10

Some funny moments but doesn't really work overall. Not the best Jim Jarmusch film.

What We Do In The Shadows - 4/4

I have never seen a Taika Waititi film that was anything short of hilarious. There is always a very warm, mischievous style to his films. He's a loveable rascal making movies that improve people's moods. I think that should be rewarded because I find it hard to see anything to be cynical about with his output.

It's a vampire comedy that inspired a recent TV series adaptation/continuation and I will have to check that out because if it's half as strong as this I will love it.

This was off the charts with laughs and great references(mostly visual) so if you see the show give this a shot too or vice versa.

Turned the show on.

Four big laughs in the first four minutes and the cast looks great.

Wreck-It Ralph 2.0: Ralph Breaks The Internet 4.5/10

Really love the first one, but this one was "not good". Felt like it didn't have much of a "purpose".

Also for some reason the version on Netflix I watched, whenever there was prominently featured on-screen text, it would be French (with English subtitles that popped up).

Halloween (2018) - Felt it a modest sequel to the original, thru now I'm confused about the time line. 7/10

Aquaman - Still haven't seen Wonder Woman yet but felt this was the best DC Universe Movie so far. Would of been higher if it wasn't for that horrible cover of Africa they threw in there when they are flying over the Sahara. 8.5/10

Us - Felt like a good follow up for Jordan Peele thru I enjoyed Get out more. Elizabeth Moss as always is great in this. 7.5/10

Toy Story 4-10/10

If it's the ending, about as perfect as it could get. Funny that a children's film centers around a reason for existence and toys are used to explore it. Part 4 is definitely funnier, with running gags and jokes galore. There's also a lot, and I mean a lot, of emotional beats with both Woody and the villain.

The original cast outside of Buzz gets pushed aside a bit for the new cast of characters for the most part besides being used as a way to keep the plot going. But nonetheless, it's a heartwarming, funny adventure that pulls on your heartstrings. Good luck at the ending everybody.

Shaft (2019) - 3/4. Objectively, wasn't a great movie.....but it was fun and ridiculous (in a good way IMO) and got some good chuckles.

I saw this movies like 21-3 years ago, and loved it. I watched it on the recommendation of a friend, not knowing at all what to expect, and couldn't stop laughing.

You should give the series a go because it's great and keeps perfectly in tone with the film. The vampire cameos are particularly impressive. Tilda Swinton and several others make it in.

I'll have to find it. If it's like the movie, I'm in.

Spiderman Into The Spider-Verse - 2.5/4

I have no idea how or why this became a critical darling but it was good fun and the cast was loaded to the brim. I did not particularly like Miles Morales, I'm not even sure what he provides that Peter Parker doesn't besides a different ethnicity. I found the integration of animation styles quite hard to endure too but it was well put together if a bit too busy. The joke count was relatively low but the action was great and I did enjoy the eclectic mix of Spider-folk however if I'm going to sit and watch a cartoon for two hours it needs to be very funny. Jake Johnson should have been in this for the duration and I feel slightly robbed that he was in it for an hour at most considering he supplied 90-95% of the laughs. The rest came from Katheryn Hahn as possibly my new favourite Doc Ock.

So yeah, really quite disappointing.

3/4 seems fairer now that I've had time to reflect on it.

Halloween 2018 - 3/4

This is obviously a labour of love from some big Halloween fans. I had my issues with the casting in places but Michael Myers was treated brilliantly even given an impression of depth through angled glimpses and prolonged exposure without spoiling the tension. This was very smartly put together, the Laurie daughter backstory is particularly brilliant and is revealed in flashback snippets and building towards an appropriate surprise.
The only issue I had with it was the "new Loomis" and what goes on there.
That was over the top and past the point of no return. It definitely chopped a half point off the rating because this was going to be a 3.5/4 until that happened and I have no idea why they included it.

I hear this has gone from an ending to the franchise, which could have made it a perfect sequel, to becoming a catalyst for continuation of the franchise.
Some people just never learn.

Still, as close to an appropriate Halloween sequel as there ever was.

Annabelle Comes Home - 6.5/10

I was not a Stannabelle of Annabelle. It's not so much anything was done wrong other than the script is really sort of just there. The acting and visuals were fine. I do wish there was more Vera Farmiga, but there's not really any film I wish had less Vera Farmiga in it.

Lost in Translation - 3/10

Dunno why I randomly watched this movie, but..... felt like I wasted a lot of time watching this.... only my sheer willpower kept me from shutting it off....

Flesh Gordon-7.5 / 10

Sleazy P Martini showed this as part of his Sleazy after dark series on OSI74. Made in the mid 70s this softcore,started off as hardcore and got edited down to softcore,porno takes the old Flash Gordon serials and adds boobs and bush.

In Modern times this film is best known cause Craig T Nelson voices the Penis monster from near the end of the film. Plus Rick Baker did a bunch of the FX work.

In 1990 a sequel was made. Flesh Gordon meets the Cosmic Cheerleaders. And even though the women in the sequel are way more attractive the film is crap.

Watched that pile of shit last week. 2/10

Never gave a fuck about Jennifer Anniston. And Adam Sandler hasn't been worth watching since 50 First Dates.

Lost In Translation is a hard film to like. I do though, just too afraid to watch it again because it took me a long time to enjoy it.

Spider-Man: Far From Home-8/10

Absolutely hilarious, a nice change of paceafter 2 epic but also dire Avengers films, and a fun, high stakes first step towards the next gen of mcu films.



I liked the direction they took with this one. There are some fun surprises, the set pieces are glorious, and Tom Holland is just perfect for this role. And while iffy at first, prob because it was so different, I do love the MJ dynamic and Holland and Zendaya do have a cute but awkward and funny chemistry.

I liked this one about as much as the first even tho it's a much bigger film with a less intimate villain. The Peter story itself is great and I'm interested in where they're going to take it after the ending.

Spider-Man: Far From Home - 8/10

I really loved it overall. Funny, Fun and a smart script. The next phase of the MCU is off to a terrific start.

Midsommar - I don't know/10

Midsommar is definitely the weirdest film of 2019 so far. It's sort of like a Jodorowsky film. Is it a good movie, I don't know. Is it a bad movie, I don't know. It has strong production design and the ending is sort of predictable after a while. It definitely earns that R rating. While Hereditary was sinister/dark this one is more trippy/sort of funny/sort of uncomfortable. Very rare to see a horror film in a colorful, daylight setting. I'm going to have to think about it I suppose.
