The official "Guitar Hero Franchise Update FAQ" breaks the bad—but not wholly unexpected—news that after the release of already announced downloadable content, your copies of DJ Hero 2 and Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock will no longer be updated with new music. You'll still be able to purchase all the already released content, naturally, but you'll have to make do with it for the foreseeable future.

Likely one of the biggest reasons for Activision turning off the drip feed of new tracks—beyond the shutting down of the Guitar Hero division—is that there won't be as many people around to make those songs. Activision is reportedly cutting back at music game studios Vicarious Visions and 7 Studios, with the future of DJ Hero creators Freestyle Games currently unknown.
Only way new DLC packs are coming is if Activision brings out a new DJ Hero game (or GH game).

G 02-11-2011 07:24 PM

Guess it's a good thing they got the Linkin Park songs out before the close :shifty:

Even though Activision might struggle with sales and profits in 2011, Blizzard has stated nothing is stopping them from their goal of releasing Diablo III for this year.

Earlier in the week, Activision's main chief operator in a meeting took the game off of the 2011 release schedule and denied the possibility of the game hitting the 2011 release window.

Blizzard did say that the game itself won't be rushed to meet the 2011 date but if they have the chance to release the game, they won't hold it back like most companies do when Halo or CoD gets released.

Also hinted was the game broadening to more types of gamers ranging from the "15 minute" gamers to the 3+ hours per session gamers.

The game is still set for a PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 release with the console versions getting the customized port and the PC being the primary platform for development.

Huge rumor involving Activision ready to make a bid to buy Take-Two and Rockstar.

If it is real, Rockstar would replace the studios Activision lost from the True Crime, Guitar/DJ Hero, and Tony Hawk series. It would also give Activision the 2k series for sports.

EA tried to get R* and didn't work out for them, in fact it had all the splendor of a hot chick rejecting a nerd in front of his friends and family while a news crew taped it. Activision going for it should be interesting, but I doubt R* would get in bed with a publisher that just showed how quickly it would drop their ass if "GTA: 3rd Spinoff in a Year" doesn't make a billion dollars.

Crysis 2 won't be released officially for another month, but a playable version of Crytek's ambitious PC shooter has already made its way online, much to the disappointment of its creators.

According to those who have played it—we first heard about the leak via the Facepunch forums—that leaked build of Crysis 2 comes complete with multiplayer and the master keys to the game's piracy protection. It is allegedly playable from start to finish, a seemingly near-complete beta version of its campaign.

We contacted EA and Crytek for comment. Here's what they had to say.

"Crytek has been alerted that an early incomplete, unfinished build of Crysis 2 has appeared on Torrent sites," reads EA's response to Kotaku on the matter. "Crytek and EA are deeply disappointed by the news. We encourage fans to support the game and the development team by waiting and purchasing the final, polished game on March 22."

"Crysis 2 is still in development and promises to be the ultimate action blockbuster as the series' signature Nanosuit lets you be the weapon as you defend NYC from an alien invasion. Piracy continues to damage the PC packaged goods market and the PC development community."

The game is scheduled to be released on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on March 22 in North America.
Gamers: "Hey [game company], why don't you release [game] for PC? We don't like that PC is getting less support than consoles!"

Company: "Fuck off."

RoXer 02-12-2011 12:33 AM

G 02-12-2011 12:35 AM

No, probably never going to now. Maybe not for a few years. I dunno. So confused

Kalyx triaD 02-12-2011 12:43 AM

Let's face it, motion gaming only has lateral steps from here on out. Companies will have back-to-basics catalogs to show off, as well as showing off promises from the past (playable Zelda, more 3DS action, more PSP2 action). We may see the return of a few franchises, and some new stuff that's aren't high on concept but heavy on fan service (Bungie may unveil their next FPS - rumored to be an FPS MMO).

If Nintendo is doing something with their hardware this E3 is the time to reveal it. I think they will make strides for the hardcore gamer this year.

Sony may show what they have learned the past 3 years with more back-to-basics stuff I mentioned; their catalog may look like PS2's heyday, except in HD/3D. We won't care, we'll love it.

Microsoft will have to preempt Sony regaining their senses and provide answers for MAG and DC Universe Online. They no longer have Bungie to themselves so they can't buffer their show with a Halo, even if the Halo 1 remake will be shown. It's no longer their ace card, they will need a new one. Gears of War 3 will be playable.

Battlefield 3 will be properly revealed and the beta may drop to surf the hype. EA needs this game to be epic after MoH didn't pick up BC2's slack.

Call of Duty's next phase or whatever will be revealed. Do not have feelings that it will impress. No music games to trump this year. Activision's suite of Marvel games will have to do.

Rockstar will have something to show that isn't LA Noir.

These aren't prophecies so don't shoot me if they don't come to pass, but all of this is what I have in mind.

Kalyx triaD 02-12-2011 12:44 AM

for the most part, very few 'high concepts' and gimmicks this year.

You Don't Know Jack is pissing me off. Every version bar the DS is region locked. It's even on Steam, but not in the UK. Probably won't ever come out here either, they did the UK specific one (complete with shitter presenter but better credits adverts) and then we had no other versions.

The Steam version is fucking bits and bytes, take my money you cunts.

Boomer 02-13-2011 01:58 PM

The Steam version is fucked up anyway. It only supports 2 players, no DLC support, and is local multiplayer only. The old part of me that has all the old YDKJs hates that the PC got boned, but I understand why they've focused on the console market.

It is only 20 bucks, though.

Emperor Smeat 02-13-2011 02:07 PM

Looks like Activision found a way to replace the expensive Guitar Hero sets for a year since the new Spyro is going to cost over $250 to get the complete experience ($40-$60 for the game, $10 each for every figurine to buy and scan for the game).

30 little figurines alone for the game once Activision completes the set for the game.

Kalyx triaD 02-13-2011 02:11 PM

I highly doubt Spyro and his toyline will snag the Guitar Hero demographic.

Keep it classy, guys!

People have been upset by this past week's look at PC piracy due to a lack of focus on consoles. Almost as if on cue, a number of console gamers have answered the call to try and prove they're as bad as anybody else. Well, congratulations on that count. Let us not think for a second that console gamers can't be complete shitheads too. Well done!

I guess we're going to see this more and more with the PS3, following the hacking that some dipshits claim was "just for homebrew." Look forward to more annoying Firmware updates. I can't wait for those to roll on down.

Of course, you can argue this "won't damage its sale" because it is Killzone, but that's the point. Big-name sequels are about the only things that publishers want to put out now, because they can survive crap like this. Welcome to the industry that we all helped create.

Finished Assassin's Creed 2. Hated it. Not as much as I hated 1 but still hated it. The controls are so terrible and the AI is stupid and combat dumb and everything is dumb. It probably smells bad too.

The only reason I kept interest was because I enjoyed the setting much more than in the last game. The story is kind of fun too. Dunno what happened to Da Vinci. I guess maybe we find out in the next game. Which I'll Goozex next year sometime probably.

I liked the end too where the fate of the Earth rests in your hands and so the bad guy breaks in through the wall and sends a security team with fold out batons to stop you.

RoXer 02-14-2011 05:11 PM

Also accidentally saw the ending to Brotherhood while trying to wiki Glyph locations. Great.

Fignuts 02-14-2011 06:17 PM

I like the scope of the story. It keeps getting bigger than you think it is. Like, I havn't beaten 2 yet, but I got all the glyph locations, and I love the movie you get.

Always loved religious themed stories, especially alternative takes on it like this one.

The director of the development team for Batman: Arkham City announced no multiplayer modes will be included in the game when it goes on sale.

Quote:

"Our thought process behind this was fairly simple. When we investigated adding multiplayer we asked, 'If we use all of the energy that is required to create multiplayer and instead focus this on the single player, would that deliver a better overall game?'

"With the game now coming to the final stages, I can honestly say it would not have been possible to deliver Arkham City the way we wanted to if we'd have added multiplayer."
It is possible multiplayer could come as a DLC update in the future since the team would have the time it needs but as of right now it won't be included in retail copies.

Any hope for the revival of the NFL 2k series or other football games with NFL license outside of Madden has to wait even longer now.

The boss at Blizzard has an interesting interview yesterday where he said the main reason Starcraft Ghost was canceled was due to the sudden boom in popularity of World of Warcraft.

Original plan was the create a spin-off game from the Starcraft series that involved stealth and a 3rd person perspective for consoles (PS2, Gamecube, Xbox). At the same time, Blizzard was working on World of Warcraft but still had enough people to work on both projects at once.

Then Blizzard started to work on Starcraft II which stretched their resources and couldn't get the time needed to fix the issues with SC Ghost development.

When World of Warcraft became a huge success, even more strain was placed on the company so the decision was to kill off SC Ghost while keeping Starcraft II development on schedule.

GameFreak has no intentions of ever making a console version of their Pokemon RPG series since they feel the series belongs on a handheld and RPGs have been more popular this generation on handhelds than on consoles (at least in Japan).

Nintendo usually leaves GameFreak alone when they make Pokemon games so its very unlikely Nintendo will want to push a console project any time soon.

Series creator Lorne Lanning and the team at Just Add Water have announced that an HD remake of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is in production. An interview in the March issue of EGM (via Facebook) outlines the plans for the game, nicknamed "Abe HD."

"It's basically Abe's Oddysee being redone in a 3D physics engine as a 2D side-scrolling platformer," said Lanning. "So the way Just Add Water wants to approach it, we thought was very smart; they are not trying to reinvent any wheels. It's like, 'Can we make that experience in a new engine, with new tech, in the old way?'"

This is slightly different from the previously announced development of Stranger's Wrath for PlayStation Network. Abe HD seems to be a full remake from the ground up, while Lanning says Stranger is "the same game, but being redone." A version of Stranger's Wrath for XBLA is also ready for release, but Lanning says the game keeps being rejected. It's possible this is due to the size limitations we heard about last year.

A team at DICE showed EA a prototype that was "declined", according to a Eurogamer Sweden translation of a Press 2 Play TV report.

"Patrick [Soderlund - EA driving and shooting game boss] acknowledges that Mirror's Edge didn't match up to their expectations regarding sales, and that has stopped the sequel that has been in development," declared the report, published originally in December.

"EA was shown a prototype, but declined with askance. The project has been stopped - involved parties at DICE are working on something else now. Patrick himself seems to have Mirror's Edge near his heart, but they are not in the business of charity."

Presumably the extra development is going into Battlefield 3 - EA's well publicised attempt at wrestling shooter supremacy from the Call of Duty series.

Patrick Soderlund confirmed last summer that "a small team" at DICE was 'on' a new Mirror's Edge game. Eurogamer pressed him on that point last November.

"Mirror's Edge is an IP that's close to my heart and EA's as well. It was a bold move from us. I'm proud we made it. It obviously didn't reach the commercial success we wanted, even though it wasn't bad at all," he said.

"I still think as a company we're going to talk about it when we're going to talk about it. What I can say is, we haven't buried it. We're absolutely continuing to support Mirror's Edge as an IP. When we're ready to talk about it, we'll talk about it."

EA Games boss Frank Gibeau went on record a few weeks later to say that the execution of Mirror's Edge "fell short". "There were issues with the learning curve, the difficulty, the narrative, and then there was no multiplayer either," he said.

Mirror's Edge, a Parkour-inspired first-person action game, was released late 2009 on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Despite an 8/10 recommendation from Eurogamer, the eye-catching title failed to, well, catch punters' eyes - entering the UK all-formats chart at 20.

Eurogamer has requested comment from EA.

Yes, let's stop developing a somewhat original idea in favour of another sandy, muddy generic army shooter.

It's not like EA doesn't have billions of dollars. They could easily afford to finish Mirrors Edge 2, even if it just became a download only title.

I really wish this army shooter bubble would just burst already. How many times can you pay $60/£40 for a "new" game about being a US soldier running through the middle east, shooting people before you realise "Hang on...I've played a game just like this before. 16 times in the last 5 years!" ?

If it's not a US army man running through the middle east, it's a US space marine running through another world that looks like ours but painted a greeny-blue. If the developers are feeling really wild they'll throw a jungle style area in the game.

I couldn't even look at Red Faction Guerilla after finishing the story because the sight of the bland browny red world had gotten so face-cuttingly dull. The gameplay and story was good but an eviroment like that just put me off eventually. No idea how anyone can play brown/grey shooters over and over and over again and not get sick of the sight of them.

G 02-17-2011 12:56 AM

It's not about them not having money to make it, it's about them being doubtful it will turn a profit.

Kalyx triaD 02-17-2011 01:00 AM

In EA's defense I read GameInformer's cover story for Battlefield 3 and if there's one military shooter you should try out for the long haul make it that one. Also Dice, the guys making it, aren't pretentious assholes and they're actually trying to make a fun game out of the military shooter sub-genre.

Shit, Khuntry likes Battlefield, and does he strike you as military FPS guy with a stack of CoD's and Killzones? Battlefield is the shit. My realistic shooter of choice.

Drakul 02-17-2011 01:03 AM

It already has a decent fan base size so that's a few sales right there. I think if they made it a downloadable game, like Kalyx said, and fixed the problems other people had with the game and maybe advertise it a little bit better it could get a good decent profit.

Not all games can explode onto the scene and become classics. I think Mirrors Edge is a slow bloomer. If they stuck with it and just tried to spend as little as possible, which I know would be hard with me suggesting advertising it more, it could do a little better.

Kalyx triaD 02-17-2011 01:03 AM

That doesn't change the fact that EA canned one of the more interesting games in recent times, I'm saying some good things are coming out of the military shooter thing.

But they should totally make a download only Mirror's Edge. It'll the edge off, and with the right vision it could make easier profit.

I remember day dreaming about a Mirror's Edge 2 with absolutely no guns and multiplayer (parkour CTF on fuckin rooftops!) and an expansion of the storyline for those who cared. The first game had leaderboards for ghost time trial races that was actually addictive and fresh - that counts for something. I think EA is being harsh on the game not being a blockbuster. It's an annoying trend these days.

Fignuts 02-17-2011 01:21 AM

Two Worlds getting a sequel, but not Mirror's Edge, makes me pretty fucking furious, tbh.

Emperor Smeat 02-17-2011 01:26 AM

EA already said from last year their main goals are to make games that will have multiplayer even if it doesn't need it (ex. Dead Space 2), their main priority is shooters (ex. CoD killer) and sports, and more involvement in the PS3 (#1 in sales for them last year).

Mirror's Edge 1 was pretty successful as a phone game so it might also make sense they couldn't get a good phone version of the game ready with ME 2.

EA is also similar to Activision and a few others who want instant mega sales instead of slower burners like Capcom and Nintendo.

It is also now hard to read on an iPod.

Kinda pompous, imo. And I never agreed with 'focus test' model for games, but then again I view games as artistic medium for the most part.

In any case the day of the publisher will end and this shit will lessen.

BigDaddyCool 02-17-2011 01:37 AM

Video games aren't art, they are toys.

Fignuts 02-17-2011 01:43 AM

I know you aren't known for being subtle in your troll attempts BDC, but that's obvious even for you.

BigDaddyCool 02-17-2011 01:45 AM

I am not trolling, video games are not art. Occasionally one has a glimmer of artistic merit, but the media as a whole is not art.

Fignuts 02-17-2011 01:56 AM

In that case I am not touching this argument with a ten foot pole.

BigDaddyCool 02-17-2011 02:01 AM

I have discussed this topic at length on other sites and tried to bring it up here to minimal success in it's own threads. Video games are not art. They can be artistic, but most art isn't fapped to by people who proclaim it as such. I mean literally jerked off too. And i mean Kylax makes threads about which big tittied bitch video game chick is the hottest then turns around and calls it art. Either it is art or it is fap material and toys.

Fignuts 02-17-2011 02:07 AM

I am going to save us both a lot of time and say "agree to disagree", because this debate can go nowhere, since we clearly have differing opinions on what art is.

BigDaddyCool 02-17-2011 02:13 AM

Art is something that is respected by the makers and consumers. Video games as a whole are not well respected by the makers as it is clear the AAA game industry rather make generic knock offs than original games. And they are not respected by the consumers who for the most part jerk off to the big tits and curse loudly as the kill people they never met over xbl.

BigDaddyCool 02-17-2011 02:15 AM

And yes by my criteria I don't consider every movie to be art, nor every song, nor every drawling. I just want to know what you define art as.

Ex Bungie Employee Spills Some Beans:

Quote:

Bungie's follow-up to the Halo series is a massively multiplayer online first-person shooter, according to a source claiming to have knowledge of the game's development. That sci-fi shooter is currently named Destiny, he says, Bungie's original post-Halo franchise.

That source also claims to be a recently terminated contractor, part of a group of an estimated 30 non-salaried employees let go from Bungie. It's not uncommon for contract and temp employees to be let go after a project completion on the scale of Halo: Reach, but that source cited claims of "budgetary concerns" and alleges unfair treatment.

The ex-Bungie employee says that Destiny, codenamed "Tiger," will run on a new Bungie-developed graphics engine and feature unique online connectivity and matchmaking technology. It was also bluntly likened to "WoW in space."

Bungie creative director Joseph Staten hinted at last year's Game Developers Conference Online that the independent studio might be building an online persistent world. Bemoaning that Halo players spent mere hours in the developer's games, Staten wondered aloud "Wouldn't it be great if we could make a world that was always there for you?"

The creators of Halo and Marathon are currently working on a multi-platform project for Activision Blizzard, part of a ten year publishing agreement.

Kotaku has contacted Bungie and Activision Publishing representatives seeking comment and clarification and will update with any response.
More wood to the fire. Eagerly awaiting Bungie's next series. And hey, this could mean a new MMO on 360, something I've been waiting on since Champions got canned.

I define all of that as art. The stuff you mentioned is still art to me, it just isn't good art.

Indeed.

That was one of the things I loved about Mirror's Edge. It was challenging, it was different and I don't know about anyone else but the sense of achievement I got from completing a chapter was amazing. Especially chapter 6.

The story was really good too. Something which I think is missing from the majority of games these days. A good story.

I was really looking forward to Mirror's Edge. It gave me something to look forward too as TimeSplitters 4 got canned. But seeing as Crytek are "in talks" with publishers now, I guess it's not all bad, but I do have a feeling that TimeSplitters 4 won't happen though.

It just annoys me that all the enjoyable, original games don't see the light of day but games that are just mere clones of their predecessors are out yearly. Not counting games like FIFA, Madden or WWE. They fall into a different category of sorts.

I guess all we have left to enjoy along with Mirror's Edge, is Mirror's Edge 2D. :(

For some reason, the actual Mirror's Edge 2D website isn't working.

Bad times.

That is not a definition. What is your definition of art? What sorts of criteria does a work have to meet to be art? You can't say what ever I deem as art is art because that is meaningless are your argument is null.

D Mac 02-17-2011 02:06 PM

Played the Killzone 3 SP demo and it's awesome. Graphics are fucking beautiful. I stopped several times to look around in awe and got shot in the face.

Let's just start this post by advising readers not to purchase Modern Warfare 2 via Xbox Live Games on Demand. The game was just added to the service and currently commands a price of $60. Please, if you must purchase Modern Warfare 2, buy it elsewhere -- like, literally anywhere else. You'll save some money.

I didn't really understand the end of your comment, however I will take it as artistic expression... I would actually say your argument is null. Art IS whatever the person decides it is. Art is an expression of an idea/thought/emotion. People do this in many ways. There is no one definition of what qualifies as art and what doesn't. That is what makes art, art! Maybe you just don't understand what art truly is?? I know I can look at many pieces of art and say to myself that it is garbage, however the person next to me can think it is the greatest piece of art he has ever seen. Trying to contain art in a definition doesn't really work. It is like trying to contain certain emotions to words. Words cannot always express an emotion, however someone can say write a poem and in a work of "art" try to express that emotion. I would say most game developers try to express something in their work. Maybe they do a shitty job at doing it. Maybe they use previous ideas. Do companies try to make money? Well yeah, that is the point of most businesses in a free market. You cannot run a company unless you are bringing in a profit. How many times in the last year have we seen this? You may have a company that truly doesn't care about the money and only the product. How long do you think they will last? However, it takes a lot more than a CEO to make a game. To say that not one person who helped create a game did not try to express something in the game is pretty ignorant. Even in a game that has been done a million times, I am sure there is at least one person who is doing his best to express an idea. To create a piece of art.

I really think you are trying too hard on this. You obviously don't have a very ARTistic mind!

I mean that is everything is art, then it is a moot point to call it art.

OssMan 02-17-2011 07:05 PM

Fucking hate this discussion. Art is a word that people created and gave a definition. I don't know what you think you're arguing over, but it isn't about the meaning of "art."

#BROKEN Hasney 02-17-2011 07:13 PM

Totally agree. Some games are as creative as things in other mediums, but I couldn't give a shit what some guy pretentiously stroking his beard thinks it is.

Bioware and EA having a promotion involving the demo for Dragon Age II with free unlockables as the prize.

If the demo reaches a million downloads when it is released on February 22, Bioware will give away 2 special in-game magic books for everyone who downloaded the demo and has an account with EA community.

Quote:

... the entire community will get their hands on two special books when the game launches on March 8: The Far Cliffs of Kirkwall, an ancient book that gives money when read; and Lothering's Lament, a similar tome that doles out experience points.
These special prizes are different than the pre-order bonuses but could be a future DLC pack similar to most pre-order and promotional goodies.

The demo prize offer is available for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC users and will be tracked as a whole and not platform specific.

So was playing The Combatribes a random game in MAME. Surprisingly fun Final Fight game using an upgraded version of the WWF Superstars engine. Last boss was some chick who I decked and then my guy walked off got the greatest ending ever.

A small picture of her face down and the 3 characters walking away just saying "Then they disappeared and noone knows where they went"

There's no intro either so I have no clue why these guys were fighting in the first place!

EA announces Medal of Honor reboot series will get another game this year and it will arrive around the same time frame as the yearly Call of Duty game.

Unlike last year, EA won't be pushing out a Battlefield game for 2011 and the plan is to alternate between a Medal of Honor and Battlefield game every year.

Dager Close was picked to work on the new Medal of Honor game but no news if Dice will be doing the multiplayer like in the previous game. It wasn't announced but its assumed the setting will either be Afghanistan or Iraq for the new game.

Final Madden 11 roster patch arrives today and unlike a normal Madden roster update process, no new patches will be possible once the NFL goes on strike. EA also stated even if the strike ends, they will not do the traditional final patch before the next Madden arrives.

EA did state their goal for Madden 12 will be to fix features while adding new ones since the roster will be the same (except for the upcoming NFL draft) for the next game.
