El Vaquero de Infierno 10-08-2023 01:50 PM

I've watched the three episodes of The Continental over the weekend.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about the series. It doesn't really feel like a story that needed to be told, and doesn't particularly add anything new to the Wick Universe. If you want to kill 90 minutes, however, you could do worse than watch an episode. The show also does a good job of recreating the 1970s period, unlike say The Americans, which undermined itself whenever going out to exterior locations, where the foreground was the 1980s and everything in the background was 2010s.

Sepholio 10-08-2023 11:23 PM

Watching McMillions. Had no idea all the winners of Monopoly for like 10-15 years were in on a scam. Kinda weird remembering how hyped we all were for monopoly growing up and now finding out we had literally no chance of winning because of con artists fixing it.

Mad interesting stuff though.

Lock Jaw 10-09-2023 03:25 PM

Been watching through Futurama slowly the past year or so.... finally got up to the current new season that just came out.... Sadly, I can notice a difference in Fry and The Professor's voices... kind of "takes away from it" because their voices were so great and distinct.... I guess it will happen, what with Billy West getting 10 years older since last he did the voices.... though Zoidberg sounds the same...

Only two episodes into the new batch, so maybe I'm just imagining it and I will get used to it....

drave 10-09-2023 03:34 PM

Would you rather have:

A) the same voice actor but slightly different because natural aging or whatever

B) AI infused voice to make it identical

Interesting question.

Lock Jaw 10-09-2023 03:57 PM

There is an option C which would be recast with another human doing an imitation of the voice.

Lock Jaw 10-09-2023 03:58 PM

Not saying I advocate for that choice, but just saying you don't have to go to AI right away....

drave 10-10-2023 10:03 AM

Oh I know we don't "have to" - but that's going to be the shitty reality. You'll have people complain either way.... that the voice doesn't "sound right" or that "AI is taking jerbs".

Sepholio 10-10-2023 01:05 PM

I'm just waiting for the big gay sex pile in protest of AI to get going.

Lock Jaw 10-18-2023 09:37 AM

Watched the first two episodes of the new Frasier and have to say the new cast of characters seems terrible. Niles and Daphne's son is particularly cringeworthy.

drave 10-18-2023 10:00 AM

Whole show is fucking cringeworthy.

Lock Jaw 10-18-2023 11:06 AM

Was good to hear and see Kelsey Grammar again.

El Vaquero de Infierno 10-18-2023 01:52 PM

I still enjoy watching the original series of Frasier. I see no need to watch a reboot.

Seanny One Ball 10-19-2023 06:21 AM

Especially not with Rodney in it

Ol Dirty Dastard 10-19-2023 09:00 AM

Yeah I'd maybe throw on the reboot as background noise if it was easily accessible. I'm not paying for a new streaming service to watch it and can tell it's going to be shite.

OG Frasier is an all-time sitcom for me--still watch it. Cheers was the fuckin business too.

But Frasier started dwindling in quality the moment Niles and Daphne got together. It ran its course two decades ago. A fresh coat of paint was never going to help.

Lock Jaw 10-19-2023 09:46 AM

It's on tv here, for the record, I did not pay for the streaming service.

Ol Dirty Dastard 10-19-2023 06:10 PM

I only stream. No cable.

Lock Jaw 10-19-2023 06:15 PM

I only have cable because I get deep discount from company I work for.

Sepholio 10-19-2023 08:02 PM

The Fall of The House of Usher was good shit. Really good shit.

Starting Kaala Paani now.

drave 10-20-2023 09:04 AM

Seanny One Ball 10-20-2023 11:32 AM

Second season of “Our Flag Means Death” is really weird and dark, a lot less funny than the first season to the point it seems like an off-kilter drama written by a Rain Man type of guy. I don’t really like it anymore, the first season only had a couple of truly hilarious episodes and this season has had none so far. It may be time to cut my losses.

I like things with ships in them, be it sea or space. There’s something immensely intimidating and awesome about both to me but I try to watch as much as I can. I can’t just keep watching Master And Commander no matter how marvellous it is.

drave 10-20-2023 11:41 AM

The adverts for that show seem terrible.

Have you watched Black Sails? Some glorious pirate shenanigans!

I've got the first book in the Master & Commander series, by Patrick O'Brian, waiting to be read at the moment. Once I'm done reading Children of Dune, I'm going to delve into it.

Seanny One Ball 10-20-2023 06:10 PM

Black Sails lost my interest fairly quickly, I need a good storyline and that was a wasted opportunity to do an actual series about Barbary pirates. First season was pretty strong admittedly, it just wasn’t enough.

El Vaquero de Infierno 10-21-2023 06:01 AM

F2movies appears to have gone down, and I'm on the final episode of Justified: City Primeval. They need to sort themselves out.

El Vaquero de Infierno 10-21-2023 09:02 AM

I've finished the 3 seasons of the 1980s 'Robin of Sherwood' series. I really liked the first two seasons; they played with atmosphere and mysticism, along with the adventure elements, which made it interesting. However, they seemed to abandon most of that in the third season. It also doesn't help that the original actor who played Robin left at the end of the season 2, and he was replaced by Jason Connery, who was ridiculously wooden. The third season also suffers from the appearance of Richard O'Brien, who gurns and camps things up in a number of episodes.

Seanny One Ball 10-21-2023 12:08 PM

Richard O’Brien is good in exactly two things, The Crystal Maze and Dark City.

El Vaquero de Infierno 10-21-2023 04:25 PM

Finished Justified: City Primeval (thanks Seanny!). I enjoyed it, though the occasional woke moments marred it somewhat; thankfully they were few. Boyd Holbrook did a good job as the main baddie, but he's no Walton Goggins. However, if they should decide to do another series, we'll get some Boyd Crowder goodness.

With both Robin of Sherwood and Justified: City Primeval done, I need to find my next lot of shows to watch. I've already begun season 3 of Peaky Blinders, so I just need to decide which other show/shows to start.

Seanny One Ball 10-27-2023 06:02 PM

You should watch “Bluestone 42” on that site. I’m doing a re-watch and I am delighted to see how well it has held up after ten years. One of the great underrated shows of the BBC 3 era.

Seanny One Ball 10-27-2023 06:11 PM

It’s a comedy about a British bomb disposal unit in Afghanistan. If that doesn’t hook you then forget it.

El Vaquero de Infierno 11-03-2023 05:35 PM

I'm into the latter half of the first season of Succession.

I'm trying so hard not to binge watch this show; so fuckin' good.

Seanny One Ball 11-06-2023 01:56 PM

El to the O.G.

Seanny One Ball 11-06-2023 01:56 PM

That will be your custom status soon.

Seanny One Ball 11-06-2023 05:16 PM

Gen V first episode is good stuff, I liked almost all of it besides the tiny woman doing that thing. The Boys did it better.

Seanny One Ball 11-06-2023 05:49 PM

This is maybe half as good as The Boys, so it’s probably worth pushing through but damn if it isn’t annoying with the shitty dialogue.

Seanny One Ball 11-07-2023 01:16 PM

The more Sam the better the episode quality. So far it’s very annoying but I like that actor/character combo because he’s head and shoulders above the others in terms of performance. There are a lot of bad acting in it, bad acting by middling attractive people.

Seanny One Ball 11-07-2023 01:18 PM

Gee I wish I was smart enough to write a comeuppance like that for a super rapist.

Seanny One Ball 11-07-2023 01:27 PM

People should plan their attacks better. Lots of idiotic scene set ups and conclusions like an unintentionally bad “The Boys”. Also need to go easier on using gimmicks from The Boys to sell the show as in-universe. We don’t need another guy who fantasises in children’s television style, Black Noir already did that and we don’t need more super rapists.

Everything is shoved right in front of your face, it’s like reading a book summary after you have read the book itself. Pointless.

Seanny One Ball 11-07-2023 01:29 PM

They/Them Asian isn’t even an attractive ladyboy. Too many Chinese hairy moles.

Seanny One Ball 11-07-2023 01:33 PM

The more annoying blonde whore is going to get work because of her pitiful sad face, that’s what annoys me. Aaron Paul is the best looking cryer, and the best cryer in modern entertainment history and now these talentless slags want a piece of the teary eyed pie.

I mean she pronounces “else” as “eltse” for fuck’s sake.

I've not watched any of these, but as described, it reminds me of when The Suicide Squad was re-written after a very successful Guardians of the Galaxy film, chock full of jokes.

The funny//serious superhero film was made and copied ad nauseum. Or something.

Seanny One Ball 11-07-2023 01:57 PM

The Suicide Squad is good though, James Gunn doesn’t pander in the way that this does. “The Boys” is in your face, not on your nose.

Lock Jaw 11-07-2023 01:58 PM

I think drave meant just "Suicide Squad" and not "The Suicide Squad"

Seanny One Ball 11-07-2023 02:00 PM

The biggest crime is how “The Boys” critiques political correctness and the current social climate as an aside, this show spews wokeness without response and marginalises the greatness of its predecessor.

So far it’s 2/4, exactly half as good as The Boys.

Seanny One Ball 11-07-2023 02:02 PM

Ah, fair enough. Does that mean the original script would have been better though because that film had ass written all over it. It was bad just to look at.

Lock Jaw 11-07-2023 02:08 PM

There has long been talk of an "Ayer Cut" that..... well, it is probably still bad, but the Snyder Cut people want it cause his "vision" was severely chopped/re-edited in attempts to "Guardians of the Galaxy"fy it.....

Then they just said F it and got the actually director of Guardians for the sequel

Seanny One Ball 11-07-2023 02:10 PM

Wake me up when “The Day The Clown Cried” is ready for release. I think I only have to wait thirty years.

Seanny One Ball 11-07-2023 02:16 PM

Next year apparently…

Holy shit, it’s going to be terrible.

just wanna say, because i enjoy saying this, that the snyder cut was demonstrably shown to be fueled by bots in a warner ad campaign to drum up business for max

Lock Jaw 11-07-2023 02:30 PM

I think it was augmented by bots for sure, but there do seem to be a sizable group of people who do seem to genuinely enjoy Zack Snyder.

Seanny One Ball 11-07-2023 02:31 PM

Hahaha “Define wildfire?”

This show is definitely not on par.

Seanny One Ball 11-07-2023 02:32 PM

Zach Snyder sucks at anything beyond straight action with stern faces. He doesn’t do anything else well.

Seanny One Ball 11-07-2023 03:15 PM

Man alive is the philosophical flip flopping in “Gen V” hard on my ears and brain. This is a “Should I kill Hitler?” moment. I should have stopped watching when the minuscule broad climbed that cock but I assumed it would contain some greatness. It has had some moments that flirted with genius, but it is just a kids show with bad words and bare bottoms in it.

I’m now worried that this will bleed into “The Boys”.

Seanny One Ball 11-07-2023 03:52 PM

Hmmm the ending was a lot better than I expected, I am glad that it all went tits at the crescendo. I wish they hadn’t had so many lame side-stories though. That less annoying blonde whore became truly insufferable by the end, her whole arc is just troughs, the peaks are only hitting the median and it makes me think even less of sad bastard extroverts. If you want to be a sad bastard, be an introvert and lean right into it so that the world doesn’t feel disturbed by your shit show.

Lock Jaw 11-07-2023 11:26 PM

On to Season 5 of Star Trek: TNG....

Seanny One Ball 11-08-2023 05:23 PM

“Lawmen: Bass Reeves” is finally streaming.
El Vaquero and Drave this is another very specific Western by Taylor Sheridan so you will want to see it at some point.
I have seen one episode, it looks and feels like it will head in the right direction, it was allegedly going to join the Yellowstone/1883 universe but Sheridan decided against it in pursuit of a more faithful and coherent storyline. Already he is mixing fact with supposition and it is a sight to see.

The cast in the first episode is lead by three actors who have all earned an will likely deliver a career masterpiece. Barry Pepper in particular, he really has had a long and storied career. It’s just excellent casting to put him up against Oyelowo and to put Oyelowo up with Wigham earlier. I imagine the series follows Oyelowo as he tracks Pepper given the circumstances of the opener, but it’s a weekly 8-parter so it has plenty of hours left to go.

I’m watching episode 2 tonight, if it isn’t spectacular I will be surprised.

Taylor Sheridan is an industry on his own.

Seanny One Ball 11-08-2023 06:17 PM

Dennis Quaid is playing as far against type as it could be in this second episode, he’s going to get an Emmy.

Seanny One Ball 11-08-2023 06:28 PM

“I hit another white man…”

That should have been the trailer.

Seanny One Ball 11-08-2023 06:32 PM

Yeah spoiler alert: it’s excellent

Blonde Moment 11-09-2023 06:19 AM

Saw the trailer after finishing 1883.

Yellowstone has been a bit of a slog, honestly. We've not even finished the 1st season. It's okay, it just isn't the same. This looks promising, however.

Seanny One Ball 11-09-2023 09:21 AM

It is rough and tumble fare, a big boy TV show for men with evolved hearts.

David Oyelowo is ripped, so ladies may enjoy it too.

So far, in order of Greatness from all things Taylor Sheridan (for me):

Yellowstone
1923 (so dumb)

I've finished season 2 of Succession and have begun season 3.

This series is soooo gooood; they're all gloriously fucked-up pieces of shit. I love the whole Gerri-Roman dynamic.

Finished the show today... though it was gonna be just an animated adaptation of the original story but it is very much a sequel/multiverse/What If thing.... original movie/story knowledge pretty much mandatory

Roman sending a dick pic to Logan was priceless.

Somehow L to the OG was more cringe than that for me. But mannnnnnnnn was that an expertly crafted sequence. I shrivelled on Roman's (and his penis's) behalf.

Lock Jaw 11-27-2023 08:44 AM

Midway through Star Trek: TNG season 6.... so I started to watch Star Trek: DS9 alongside it, since that is when it started. Problem is that I guess TOS and TNG were both "remastered" at some point, while DS9 was not... so visually just looks terrible and fuzzy

Ol Dirty Dastard 11-27-2023 08:47 AM

DS9 only gets really good towards the end of season 2. And it's pretty blech until then. But then all of a sudden it becomes one of my favourite shows ever.

Lock Jaw 11-27-2023 08:49 AM

That's kind of why I started it beside TNG, so that by the time I only have DS9 left it will be better.

El Vaquero de Infierno 11-28-2023 12:49 PM

Like most Star Trek series, DS9 doesn't really get going until season 3. Until then, you have the lovely Jadzia Dax to admire.

El Vaquero de Infierno 11-28-2023 12:50 PM

As the series also has a lot of non-Starfleet characters, I find from a character standpoint, DS9 is superior to the other shows. Quark and Garak are gold.

Ol Dirty Dastard 11-28-2023 12:54 PM

Garak is a favourite all time character for me, nvm star trek. In the Pale Moonlight is a fucking masterpiece.

Seanny One Ball 11-29-2023 05:35 PM

Lawmen: Bass Reeves is shaping up to be just shy of eternal greatness but right up there with the best intentioned and well realised efforts in the TV western genre.
It is not 1883, but it isn’t over yet. It is easily 3.5/4.

I hope this spawns a bunch of “Lawmen:” type series. So many great historical figures to choose from. Maybe we’ll get lucky and Taylor Sheridan will do Hickock some justice. Only “Deadwood” dared attempt it, and a worthy claim it has to best ever representation.

Lock Jaw 11-30-2023 09:19 AM

Damb at this early episode of DS9 with an airborne virus and quarantine being enforced.... but then despite being airborne ain't nobody using masks, not even the doctors and nurses working directly with the infected...

El Vaquero de Infierno 12-02-2023 08:10 AM

Finished Succession.

A top-drawer series that has restored my faith that smart shows with complex characters and great stories still exist, and not all have succumbed to 'The Message' and the poor, lazy writing that comes with it.

Let there be more shows like Succession!

Seanny One Ball 12-06-2023 06:14 PM
