El Vaquero de Infierno 07-03-2023 12:02 PM

I've watched the first five episodes of season 3 The Witcher. I feel like it is becoming closer to what perhaps I wanted from the show, but the damage is done. It still suffers from a lack of world building, and the fact that you don't know where people are geographically half the time and how that relates to distances between characters. For instance, when Ciri is being chased by the Wild Hunt (I think in episode 4 or 5), Geralt suddenly appears out of nowhere to save her, but in the previous scene he was presumably leagues or hundreds of miles away exploring an abandoned castle.

While I wait for the second half of season 3 The Witcher, I've started season 1 of The Silo, which started me thinking that a Fallout series would be good if done right. I've now discovered or remembered that there is one due to come out on Amazon at some point this year or next, starring Walton Goggins as a ghoul. I can see Goggins having so much fun in such a role.

Seanny One Ball 07-03-2023 12:21 PM

Making a show out of Fallout seems redundant. The best parts of the game are the decisions you get to make, if you take that away you’re just watching any old post-apocalyptic crap.

Frank Drebin 07-03-2023 03:22 PM

This season of Black Mirror sucked. Theres nothing special to Black Mirror now and it might have fallen below other anthology shows that have/are trying to mimic its style for their own success which is piss poor. The Guillermo Del Toro horror series, Oats Studios, etc.

Its a shame because the first 4 seasons and Bandersnatch contain tons of magic - none of which are in these last two seasons.

I honestly couldn't tell you which of these episodes was my favorite because they all were totally soulless with bland takes on the few promising concepts included in this batch.

Its all very disappointing. I wouldn't be surprised if this winds up being the end unless its doing well enough that Netflix just throws money at Charlie Booker and he keeps churning out seasons like this.

Destor 07-03-2023 09:32 PM

Id not dispute that except for ep 3 being very strong

Destor 07-03-2023 09:34 PM

601 was solid to fun. I didnt hate my time with it. Like the hanna montana ep.

602 i liked the ending. Getting a few beats with his melancholy really sold it for me. Most of the run time was very mid.

603 i think was exceptional and as good as many of the best of series

604 was dog shit

605 was interesting and well constructed but he no business being in this show

Eh....entirely too predictable and slow. Could have shaved 20-25 minutes off of that. Kept waiting for a turn or something and it never happened. It was like they just watched every M. Night movie and got scared of doing anything other than the expected.

When you say "stong" I'd apply that to the actors but that should be expected when they put known names into 3 of the 4 main roles.

If agree with what you said about 601/2/4/5

Destor 07-04-2023 04:11 PM

Whether its Hitchcock Presents, Twilight Zone or Black Mirror i dont think a twist is inherently needed. Theyre welcome for sure but you dont HAVE to have one. Sometimes its about the journey. Beyond the Sea is a great journey.

Well acted is an understatement obviously but the story beats arent exactly obvious either. For instance before the manson family shows up that development wasnt obviously going to happen and as the story unravels it couldve went 3 or 4 ways. That said even if you pegged every beat from start to finish its still a compelling hour+ of tv.

Totally fair to say the season sucked but saying that ep is as bad as the rest of it...i dunno. Bridge too far for me.

Seanny One Ball 07-04-2023 04:55 PM

People remember the twist endings, but the best Twilight Zone episodes had revelations rather than rug pulls. It wasn’t afraid to re-address familiar concepts with greater brevity. A personal favourite is “Mr. Denton On Doomsday” which is an off-beat counterpart to the classic Western “The Gunfighter” which itself was an anti-Western and a work of streamlined genius. Rod Serling somehow tightened it up and made it more magical.

You could see where it was going, but getting there was lovely.

Lock Jaw 07-04-2023 05:58 PM

Feel like the episode 602 was "very obvious" twist and didn't really have anything to do with "technology" as is the gimmick.... 601 and 603 were great. Haven't watched others yet.

Seanny One Ball 07-05-2023 02:20 AM

Season 6 was more overt horror by design. Bad idea.

Frank Drebin 07-05-2023 12:58 PM

+1

Deviating from the very premise that made the show popular towards something much more available and "generic" wasn't a great thought.

Destor 07-05-2023 05:18 PM

I think we all agree on that for sure

rez 07-05-2023 11:06 PM

Joan is Awful and Beyond the Sea were the only episodes that have any business labeled as Black Mirror episodes. (Well, in Episode 5's defense, it was introduced as "Red Mirror".)

I didn't hate any of the episodes....but yeah.

- Mazey Day had a lazy ending. It could have been great for some other anthology series during the rise of TMZ/Perez Hilton but it would have been on some rando DVD at Family Video
- I really liked Loch Henry but again.....not Black Mirror
- Demon 79 would have worked better as a Creep Show episode
- Aaron Paul's acting was great

rez 07-05-2023 11:13 PM

random thought but Demon 79...missed opportunity - Ed O'Neill cameo. That'd been the tits.

rez 07-05-2023 11:16 PM

lol. re watching tonight's ep of Always Sunny. Risk E. Rat's Pizza and Amusement Center. Hilarious.

Ol Dirty Dastard 07-06-2023 09:50 PM

You've done right

Seanny One Ball 07-07-2023 06:24 AM

Destor you should make a few predictions before you get to the finale, it’s a very satisfying season to close with.

Ol Dirty Dastard 07-07-2023 07:10 AM

what matters most is the Successions we made along the way.

El Vaquero de Infierno 07-07-2023 01:19 PM

Finished season 1 of Silo.

A great sci-fi that remains compelling until the end, underpinned by a strong performance by Rebecca Ferguson. I'd say the only weakness to the show (other than some inconsistent American accents) is Common. He was serviceable in Hell on Wheels, but his role could have done with someone with more acting depth.

Overall, I look forward to season 2 and where they take the series next.

with the notable exception of a whodunnit where the author is explicitly challenging me to predict the outcome i dont actively try and think ahead of the narrative. Obviously sometimes things are so obvious it hurts and ideas inevitably erupt from you whether you like it or not but i prefer to ruminate on what they've given me so far.

And there's a lot of reasons for that but chiefly there's always a chance I'll have a better idea than what they land on and then whatever it is they arrive at will disappoint me.

So i like to analyze the narrative i was given first and then examine if there was better/tighter/more cathartic path after.

I can tell you ive given no thought to who will be left on the top of the heap at the conclusion. But if you wanted blind speculation looking at where the narrative begins the death of the patriarchal figure would be the most thematic conclusion.

But thats literally off the top of my head, i havent given it any serious thought.

Destor 07-08-2023 03:40 PM

Fundamentally though i think its "do you listen to people when theyre speaking to you or are you waiting for your turn to speak."

Ol Dirty Dastard 07-08-2023 04:09 PM

One of my favourite parts of the last episode you watched was Connor’s speech about his three half siblings being needy love sponges and how he can subsist off insects and dirt (or something akin to that, the exact line escapes me).

Destor 07-08-2023 04:44 PM

Real good ep

Ol Dirty Dastard 07-08-2023 07:20 PM

One of my favourite parts of that episode is it's called Connor's Wedding. (Repost from succession spoilers thread).

El Vaquero de Infierno 07-09-2023 04:45 AM

I just discovered that Murder She Wrote and Magnum P.I. were in the same TV universe; my Mum is currently watching a crossover episode.

Anyways, I've finally finished the first season of Sleeper Cell. The conclusion was oddly anti-climactic. However, I'll watch the second season.

goddamnit. season finale next week for always sunny :(

OssMan 07-13-2023 11:02 AM

Undercover underage

I have seen everything online child predator related and this is most thorough project to come since To Catch a Predator... it doesn't have nearly the entertainment value since you don't have a guy getting lured into a house and then Chris Hansen appearing to grill them though, this one is really really serious and focuses more on the decoy process than it does on getting answers from the guys. In season 1 they use a 34 year old woman as the decoy which doesn't feel believable, in season 2 it looks like they got more resources and got actual young actresses to play the decoys. It's annoying how the style is very reality tv though, like it's heavily dramatized, every single time a guy sends a creepy message the decoys get all shocked as if they didn't know to expect this.

rez 07-15-2023 12:17 AM

Just finished a 2 day binge of Vice Principals on "MAX". Same people and some actors behind Gemstones. That is a way to end a TV show on their own terms. 2 seasons. 10/10

This is the funniest fucking show....

Evil Vito 07-18-2023 08:52 AM

For some reason I had it in my head that the 2nd season of Severance was already in the can and, presumably, could be rolled out whenever Apple needs some new programming amid the strikes. Turns out I was wrong on that, filming was nearly complete but not quite done when the actors (understandably) walked out in support of the writers and now of course they're on strike too.

Anyway, glad there's solidarity etc and hopefully everyone holds out for a good deal. But damn, I miss this show a lot. Given the strikes have no real end in sight I guess it'll have to wait til 2024.

Might be time for a rewatch.

Ol Dirty Dastard 07-18-2023 09:15 AM

If Hollywood dies because execs can’t let go of their greed, let it die. It would suck but fuckem.

El Vaquero de Infierno 07-18-2023 03:01 PM

On the recommendation of Newstead, I've watched Andor.

I quite enjoyed it, and I look forward to a second season (presumably there will be at least another season). The series was definitely an improvement on the shitshow that was Boba Fett.

The one based on Japanese sumo and not the UK murder mystery one.

So my MIL is very....... unaware at times.

She knew my wife and I started 1883 and she liked what she saw. So she watched the entire season, knowing we hadn't, and comes in and fucking SPOILS EVERYTHING from the last 3 episodes.

Wonderful.

I will now begin spoiling everything wrestling related for the forseeable future. She is still very much into kayfabe.

El Vaquero de Infierno 07-21-2023 12:43 PM

1883 is glorious and your MIL should receive a stunner, a last ride and a final finisher of your choice.

1923 is pretty good as well. I don't think it reaches the heights of the other show, but it is worth watching for the countess lady.

El Vaquero de Infierno 07-23-2023 11:39 AM

Following Andor, I decided to watch season 3 of The Mandalorian. It was as watchable as ever, but by the end I didn't really see the need for the season to exist.

I've watched the first two episodes of the final season of Jack Ryan, and also the first two episodes of season 1 Vice Principals. The latter I'm enjoying a lot; Danny McBride and Walton Goggins are fantastic in their respective roles. Goggins is essentially playing a camper version of his Boyd Crowder character.

Ol Dirty Dastard 07-23-2023 01:47 PM

Mando really fell apart in season 3. You could tell Favs clashed with the execs and shat out some scripts. Like you implied, still entertaining but entirely vapid and without a hint of the soul which made it so special.

Finished season 3 of The Witcher. They pretty much sidelined Geralt in those final 3 episodes; Cavill must of enjoyed that send-off.

I've rewatching season 1 of Foundation at the moment. I really like this series and I look forward to watching season 2 once all the episodes are available.

I still need to finish the final season of Jack Ryan, but Foundation has been occupying my viewing as of late. I also need to continue with Vice Principals as well.

Twisted Metal.

Just finished ep 1 of The Bear.

El Vaquero de Infierno 08-10-2023 04:24 PM

I'm ten years behind the times, but I've finished the first season of Peaky Blinders. That is some grand stuff; Cillian Murphy is great. I'm going to start season 2 at the weekend.

I've also finished the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It hasn't particularly interested me, especially the more preachy SJW-esque episodes, and I skipped the musical episode altogether; musical episodes were old 20 years ago, find something original to do.

I might finally join the Succession bandwagon, whilst I wait for all the season two Foundation episodes to appear; I'm not really decided yet.

El Vaquero de Infierno 08-13-2023 01:46 PM

Over the past two days I've watched the six-episode series, We Own This City, which is by The Wire's David Simon, and looks at the real-life police corruption of Baltimore's Gun Trace Task Force.

It's not up at The Wire's level, mainly because it is at times a bit too preachy, opting more often than not to tell rather than show. However, the programme does a great job, in the same way as the aforementioned series, in highlighting how fucked Baltimore is as city and how it is let down by both those in power and those with authority.

Jon Bernthal also gives a great central performance.

Lock Jaw 08-14-2023 12:32 AM

Finished the season of American Born Chinese. Really enjoyed it, hope it gets picked up for a season 2.

El Vaquero de Infierno 08-27-2023 01:02 PM

I've finished the second season of Peaky Blinders. I continue to enjoy it, but the show is somewhat undermined by the plot armour that the various Shelbys enjoy. The writers think they are being clever, but they are wrong.

I've also finished the first season of Good Omens. I've never read the source material, so I can't judge it from that point of view, but I liked the quirkiness of it. It also benefits from the strong performances of Michael Sheen and David Tennant. I also like Adria Arjona, but for completely different reasons....

I'm currently rewatching the two seasons of Marco Polo as well. I think this is probably the second or third time that I've done this over the years.

It also doesn't help that season 1 is absolutely atrocious, though it improves somewhat once they kill off Tasha Yar.

Not as good as 1883, at all. Kinda dumb tbh.

El Vaquero de Infierno 09-06-2023 12:28 PM

I mostly watched for the woman who plays the countess.

drave 09-06-2023 12:56 PM

I don't know who that is.

1923 felt more like one of those romance novel covers looks. The cheesy shit between Spencer and whatever her name was (she annoyed the fuck out of me) was nearly intolerable. It was bad.

And WTF was with Tim Dalton's character? We have the last episode focus on him and his bondage fetish for a solid 10 mins. Low effort, really.

Here's to hoping Yellowstone is less of whatever 1923 thought it was.

El Vaquero de Infierno 09-06-2023 01:26 PM

The countess is Spencer's love interest. That romance is mad cheddar, but she's pretty and has a nice rack, so I let it slide.

But, year, 1923 doesn't touch 1883 or the regular Yellowstone series.
