Watching the Boys. A nice little slow build first ep to catch up with where everyone is at after the season finale. Episode picks up the pace and is glorious.

El Vaquero de Infierno 09-04-2020 06:56 PM

I'm waiting until the whole season has been released. Motherlovers need to understand this is not the 1990s or 2000s; I expect to binge a season at my leisure.

GD 09-06-2020 03:20 PM

Completed the first three episodes. Can’t wait for the new one. Holy shit! Episode 3 was too good.

Seanny One Ball 09-06-2020 05:07 PM

"Episode three was too good"

They used to perform long and endless vaudeville routines around wordplay like that.

GD 09-06-2020 05:10 PM

Your sex life would make for a good silent film.

Ugh

Seanny One Ball 09-07-2020 04:15 PM

That doesn't even make sense but I do applaud the burn.

Seanny One Ball 09-09-2020 05:00 PM

Started watching season 2.

A strong return so far. The performance quality and style makes a lot of the details palatable. This is a smarter show than Umbrella Academy with a much more acerbic edge to the characters.

Polished and reliable writing.

Damian Rey 2.0 09-09-2020 06:10 PM

It is far and away better than the umbrella academy. It's not even close.

Episode 3 was so good. Hate having to wait a week to get back into it.

GD 09-10-2020 02:22 AM

Why would anyone compare this to Umbrella Academy? Both are different in execution and this is clearly superior.

Seanny One Ball 09-10-2020 05:32 AM

Are you seriously asking why anybody would compare two contemporary shows with similar themes?

GD 09-10-2020 05:49 AM

One is more grittier and dark whereas the other is more accessible? That's just me. They're both enjoyable but I'd hate to compare them and water down the other because the comparison feels unfair.

Seanny One Ball 09-10-2020 07:00 AM

So I can't compare one Batman to any others if they are "more grittier"?

How about comparing versions of A Star Is Born?

What do you even mean by that post?

GD 09-10-2020 07:15 AM

Comparing different iterations of Batman doesn't come across as wrong since they share the same protagonist, characters, and stories. The Umbrella Academy and The Boys are two very different shows. One deals with a dysfunctional family with superpowers and other is about a group of guys of who are on the run and trying to seek revenge / justice against people with superpowers.

Seanny One Ball 09-10-2020 07:31 AM

They are both shows about dysfunctional groups of superheroes. In one they are protagonists, and the other they are antagonists.

It's the same premise essentially.

Superheroes are dicks too.

Seanny One Ball 09-10-2020 07:32 AM

Even if they were different you can still compare them though. Comparing things helps you understand them more.

GD 09-10-2020 07:39 AM

Your argument for comparison is better than mine.

I just have a strong preference for one over the other. Feel like it undermines "The Umbrella Academy" which I also cherish.

Big Vic 09-10-2020 08:57 AM

How would you say "The Boys" compares to "A Star is born"? Which is better?

GD 09-11-2020 04:04 PM

Ep 4 was whole lotta sometin

Damian Rey 2.0 09-15-2020 02:58 AM

Fucking hell one episode a week now? Fuck

Big Vic 09-15-2020 04:09 PM

Kinda like it; gives us something to discuss each week...... so..... let's discuss?

Seanny One Ball 09-15-2020 05:47 PM

Episode 4 has classic written all over it due to that one amazing Homelander revelation.
The greatness of that scene is that it's gross, funny, weird and then with one swift shake it becomes darker than almost everything that they have done so far.

Anthony Starr is ballin' at this stage.
He's so great in the role.

Damian Rey 2.0 09-15-2020 08:18 PM

The
SPOILER: show
doppelganger
reveal is so great namely because Homelander plays off it so well.

Frank Drebin 09-17-2020 01:35 PM

As much as I hate having to wait a week, I'm totally cool with this being done for what a service deems a "big deal". Gets people talking and a lot of click bait comes out when people get a chance to ruminate on the goings on and potential theories.

In this day and age its hard to do that over a few weeks let alone months if you're looking to stay relevant for that long. Does it mean more subscribers? I'd like to see the data on if this works.

Savio 09-17-2020 01:49 PM

Nitpick: The boat seemed shoehorned in to episode 3 just to give "The Deep" a way to come back.

Helmsphere 09-17-2020 01:58 PM

So ready to actually begin to watch this. Think I might finally have the girlfriend on board since she has gotten used to my liking of Over the Top stuff

Seanny One Ball 09-18-2020 05:26 PM

Episode 5 was excellent again.
This show is so weird but everybody plays it so strIght.

Anthony Starr's eyes are a whole other level of physical performance.
His face is just perfect for that character.

Fignuts 09-19-2020 07:37 AM

Love Stormfront and I have no idea where they are going with her. In the comic he's a minor character.

Also, super happy that Terror is in it now.

I was disappointed with Frenchie in the first season, but he's gotten a lot more development so far, and he's growing on me.

Frank Drebin 09-19-2020 11:54 AM

I love so much about the show but Ill start by saying the slow burn on Stormfront's "views" is great. They juuuuuust started broaching the topic with A-Train this episode. Knowing the audience would find out about the comic Stormfront it would be easy to introduce the character, then immediately pull back the curtain. There's something more going on with her than just her "views".

Seanny One Ball 09-19-2020 01:36 PM

Storefront was guilty of the most ludicrously planted piece of racism ever.

"You yellow bastard".

Terrible.

I'm still pretending it was a shout out to Sin City just to get over it.

Seanny One Ball 09-19-2020 01:38 PM

One thing this show needs to do is make The Boys a much more legitimate threat to superheroes.
They are continually made to look like ineffective dipshits.

Fighting Black Noir with a fire poker? Seriously?!

How is it ludicrous? She's a racist and she was around when it was a commonly used racial slur.

In the comics they have compound v in their veins right from the start. Maybe they're saving that for later in the show.

I didn't have a problem with the fire poker thing. He wasn't using it to be effective, he was just buying time.

Seanny One Ball 09-19-2020 01:56 PM

It was ludicrous because no racist would save their one moment of truth and honesty to say "you yellow bastard".
That is hack writing at best and deliberate placement at worst.

"Oh I'm too multicultural to know what a racist might call an Oriental person...just have her call the guy yellow. That will do."

I expect the real deal and everybody knows a real racist would go Gook on that one. Yellow isn't even an insult in the mind of a racist.

Trust me I'm Scottish.

It is a big issue and it will inevitably need explained if they just start dosing these guys now.
Very hard to make sense of that in the narrative, they'd have been on it from day one if they could be.

Hopefully they have a good reason for this.

I dunno, maybe we should ask Sixx.

Seanny One Ball 09-19-2020 02:53 PM

He'd have filled the air with so much ethnic pejorative that you'd never see one letter in the speech bubble.

Frank Drebin 09-19-2020 04:48 PM

Never watching this show again because she should have said gook rather than yellow bastard.

Seanny One Ball 09-19-2020 06:07 PM

Gook would have made that a perfect episode but the critics are too afraid to say.
Rex Reed would have but he probably thinks The Boys is a "fag show" based on name alone.

Seanny One Ball 09-19-2020 06:08 PM

Maybe they really do need to hire a consultant that knows a bit about racial epithets.

How much is bail for a Polish prisoner?

Fignuts 09-19-2020 07:37 PM

Gook is a slur originating from the Vietnam/Korean war and was used in reference to those people.

“Yellow” is a slur from WWII in reference to Japanese people. Stormfront in the comics was from that era, so again, it makes perfect sense that she’d use that specific slur especially towards a Japanese person.

Frank Drebin 09-19-2020 08:59 PM

Woah, Seanny! You gonna take that?

Fignuts 09-19-2020 09:33 PM

He’s not owenbrown. Shut up.

Sixx 09-20-2020 03:56 AM

Calling them yellow is not considered racist here, just a common expression.

You can't stick to etymology when you cover racial epithets.
These are interchangeable to all racists.

Get a grip lad.

Seanny One Ball 09-20-2020 09:34 AM

Yellow was invented in 1945 to slag of Hirohito for having jaundice

Seanny One Ball 09-20-2020 09:34 AM

Bananas were just "green" or "no longer green" until 1945

Episode 5 was a lot of fun. I agree that at some point, the Boys need to gain a physical advantage. They've been surviving by luck and cunning but that well will run dry at some point.

Eh. Nitpicky. Especially since it was from her standpoint a throwaway phrase when essentially he was the only one there to hear it. The "hackier" part was the whole wanting to see his eyes while he died thing... she just got done with indiscriminate mass murder, but this guy she wanted to savor for no reason. It didn't have to be anything over the top... well, more over the top than killing black bystanders simply because they were in the way of her target and not wort the effort of avoiding.

Personally, I think it sounds like a stupid argument that her racism wasn't racist enough for you. Besides, the way this show likes to play with or subvert such expectations from people familiar with the source material, there might be some more truth behind her little "saying without saying" dance with A-Train. Her comment about regular people being beneath folks with super powers might be more accurate than just an excuse to not say black people in that instance. Kinda like old school Magneto logic. It is possible even regular white people are subhuman scum to her, because they don't have powers. But we shall see.

Seanny One Ball 09-22-2020 08:59 AM

Mate no racism will ever be enough for me

Seanny One Ball 09-25-2020 05:50 PM

Imagine being a Superhero that isn't invulnerable to bullets. You'd stick to muggings I think.
This show does a good job of showing you how many D Listers there would be if X Men was real life too. I like that some powers are good for certain things but they have no real advantage against deadly weapons.

It's an ever evolving race to figure out what kills them.

Seanny One Ball 09-25-2020 05:50 PM

And Homelander's only known weakness is that he can't see through zinc of all things.

Helmsphere 09-25-2020 06:05 PM

Really cool when Butcher shoots that guy in the field. I did a double take like "oh yeah, just because they have a power to use doesn't mean they can't be hurt."

Damian Rey 2.0 09-26-2020 12:16 AM

I liked the flashback with Frenchy making different types of bombs to disable the supes. Xanax bomb was good. Don't know why they don't do more of that now.

Couple I big reveals in this ep. Want episode 7 badly.

Helmsphere 09-26-2020 03:18 AM

Gray 10-09-2020 04:19 PM

Great episode. Just a shame now we'll have to wait until next year for the next season...

There's something about going on a skyscraper and just letting it all flow free also.

SPOILER: show
Also nice to see Stormfront paying homage to Anakin, I would have expected the episode to end with them sticking a mask on her and rebuilding her.

Lastly I did not see the Congresswoman being the one causing the explosions... If she has to be in the vicinity of it, how/why kill Raynor in the very first episode?

She also wasn't in a trance-like state (Eyes) during the court scene

Seriously thought he was going to literally snipe someone.

And to answer your question
SPOILER: show
same reason for letting the supe terrorists happen or kind of a flip on what Edgar told Butcher... she probably needed Stormfront/Vought to go up against to further her own agenda. This whole show is people using people.

I wonder something, though... the general pool of powers seems to be fairly specific... outside of the freaks in the hospital, that is. Flight, speedster, eyebeams (seriously, Homelander, Ryan, and some random baby have exactly the same heat vision) , varying degrees of invulnerability, strength... I wonder if they will touch on that later.

Fignuts 10-10-2020 07:02 AM

Well if you want to look to the comic for answers, don't bother, because it's another case of the character being drastically different from the comic counterpart.

SPOILER: show
In the book, Victor Nueman (yes, a man) is the puppet president put into office by Vought so they could rule the country. He was created as a parody of George W. Bush (who many saw as a puppet president for Cheney) and is legally retarded. I'm talking can't even properly function, handicapped.

So Nueman in the show being some sort of mastermind is a massive swerve. The only connection I can see to the comic and a possible motivation for her actions is Comic Nueman works for Vought. They could be doing the exact opposite of the book, where Nueman is actually the secret shadow CEO of Vought and Edgar is just the public face. And she's playing some sort of long game to get herself elected as president so Vought then has complete control over everything, and the masses wouldn't even realize it.

I just finished the episode where Homelander fucks Stormfront.

I cant figure out why they think Stormfront made that bitches head explode. There is nothing in her powers that would make a head explode and there wasnt any lightening.
