I speculated (partly in jest) that since Kamiya (Bayonetta, Okami, DMC1) doesn't do sequels, but people are demanding a 'sequel' to Bayonetta, that his next action game will actually be a new IP altogether. His response was: "Hmm..."

Blizzard wants their due for supplying Korean eSports:

Quote:

StarCraft isn't a game in South Korea, it's a national pastime. When gamers aren't playing it, they can watch tournaments on TV. But its creator, Blizzard Entertainment, is unhappy. And it has every right to be.

Blizzard's Paul Sams appeared at a press conference in Seoul late last week and blasted cable channels MBC Game and OnGameNet for televising tournaments without the company's permission, reports the Korea Times.

"It's unfortunate that the e-sports industry in Korea is lagging behind other industries in recognition of intellectual property (IP) rights and the basic principles related to them," said Sams. "Korea is the only region in the world where we have had to resort to litigation to protect our IP rights." Blizzard is considering launching a lawsuit against the Korea e-Sports Players Association (KeSPA).

Blizzard allowed MBC Game and OnGameNet to show KeSPA tournaments until August — yet, the broadcasters continued to run StarCraft tournaments through the fall. Meanwhile, the game company signed an exclusive deal with Gretech-GomTV to show StarCraft tournaments.

The argument that broadcasters are making is that games used in professional tournaments are public domain and it would be akin to Adidas billing to have its balls used in games.

Sams was quick to reject that claim, noting, "Classifying StarCraft and other e-sports as part of the public domain deprives developers such as Blizzard of their IP rights. There will be no incentive to do what Blizzard had done to balance the games for competition, which is a more difficult task than creating a normal game."

StarCraft isn't like Adidas footballs, and that analogy would better be suited to peripheral makers. StarCraft is Blizzard's show — every little thing in that game was created by someone at Blizzard. E-sports are a different beast than sports.

New Tomb Raider is a Prequel:

Quote:

Developer Crystal Dynamics is working on a new Tomb Raider meant to be an origin story for Lara Croft, the studio said today.

"Forget everything you knew about TOMB RAIDER," said Darrell Gallagher, Head of Studio, Crystal Dynamics. [Done] "This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other."

The game, they say, will feature the first adventure for a young and inexperienced Lara Croft in a story which "charts the journey of an ordinary woman who finds out just how far she must go in order to stay alive."

"After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive"

That box art being in English should not only put a smile on the face of British and Irish fans; it also increases the odds of the collection making its way to North America and Australasia as well.

Super Mario All-Stars was first released on the Super Nintendo, and includes updated (well, by SNES standards) versions of NES/Famicom classics Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels

Source.

Might go ahead and buy this if I can afford it. If I can't, it's no big deal as I bought Mario 1, 2 (Japanese 2 and our 2) & 3 on the VC. As well as SMW.

So, it arrived today. I've not tried the actual game out yet but it's identicle to the SNES version so I know how things will go.

I flicked through the history booklet that comes with it and it's not so much "history" as it is Miyamoto, Koji Kondo and some other guy giving one line comments about each console Mario game up to SMG2. Most of it is not even interesting stuff. It's stuff like "I wanted to have Mario run under a blue sky so that's what we did.". 2 or 3 things are new to me but most of it isn't interesting. There is nothing else to the booklet other than those little comments and a couple of design documents in Japanese.
I was expecting something like a paragraph about each game with stuff like "We created Mario because...etc etc" and "We originally intended to do this or that but couldn't because..." and so on.

The OST that comes with it has 20 tracks. The first 10 being one piece of music straight from each Mario (1, 2, 3, World, 64, Sunshine, NSMB, Galaxy, NSMBW and Galaxy 2.). The NSMB theme sounds better with CD quality than it does from the DS, obviously. So that's a plus.
The other 10 tracks are just sounds you can find pretty easily online. The coin sound, the pipe sound etc.

I don't think it was really worth the price (£19.99 in the UK). I like the idea of a Mario anniversary package but, in the end, they could have done better than the shoddy job they did, even if it meant charging more. This is worth £9.99 maximum, I'd say.

Fignuts 12-06-2010 03:30 PM

Oh boy, more tomb raider games.

Uncharted does it about 65347376543 times better. Talk to me when the next installment in that series is announced.

Boomer 12-06-2010 03:33 PM

Too bad my Uncharted 1 freezes every fucking time I play, with whatever fucking disk I use. Probably never going to play Uncharted 2 because of this bullshit.

Xero 12-06-2010 03:38 PM

Is your save corrupted?

Boomer 12-06-2010 05:16 PM

I've started the game over and over and over, with new firmwares, by formatting the hard drive, by doing every logical step, and it won't fucking work. I get to Chapter 6 or so, and it freezes. I reload it, and the coin spins infinitely. When I hard-reset the console and boot it back up, it freezes at the coin. I've honestly tried everything. Its my PS3, and I know no one that lives anywhere close to me that owns a PS3. My system has never had any issues otherwise. It's bizarre.

Fignuts 12-06-2010 05:43 PM

Well uncharted 2 might still work. There are a couple returning characters from 1, but beyond that, the plot is seperate from the first.

Boomer 12-06-2010 06:10 PM

I'm sure it would. It's just that I want to play Uncharted 1 first. If I play Uncharted 2, I doubt I will want to return to the former. I will suffer through crazy amounts of a series to make sure I've playing everything in order. Probably the reason I've never played Dragon Quest.

Plus, I've played through enough of the game that I want to finish it first. Such a tease. Barely even got to the good parts.

RoXer 12-06-2010 06:27 PM

How long do you let it load? Leave it on all night and see hwhat happens

Fignuts 12-06-2010 06:35 PM

Too bad, because Uncharted 2 has imo, the best single player campaign of any game this generation.

I let it load for at least 5 hours at one point. It gets pretty obvious when the soundtrack disappears that the game is about to be on its last leg. And like I said, I've tried it with multiple copies, so it is my console. The Naughty Dog forums are filled with people complaining about various freezing problems, and have been since the 3.3 firmware supposedly broke the game.

Basically just makes me mad at this point. I've seriously played the game over at least five times, hoping it would make a difference. Farthest I got was Chapter 8, I think.

Guess I could try again. Just gonna make me mad though.

G 12-06-2010 10:51 PM

you could always just youtube the rest. it's a pretty short game, like 5 hours or so.

Boomer 12-06-2010 10:59 PM

I've considered it, but I bought the game, so I want to play it.

Basically putting myself in an impossible situation. Sony told me I could send my PS3 in, but I didn't think it was worth the time. Probably past my warranty now. And like I said, my PS3 works perfectly otherwise.

Emperor Smeat 12-07-2010 08:14 PM

Next James Bond video game might be heavy in stealth and actual spy stuff than movie action style previous James Bond games have been. Activision is letting Raven Software develop the new Bond game and hopes for a 2011/2012 release date.

It is also possible since the good reviews of GoldenEye for the Wii which added stealth to a Bond game could have favored the decision to move the series in a new direction at least for 1 game.

The game was originally stopped in development due to the possibility of MGM no longer owning the Bond license but the plan now is to finish the game while Activision is still the exclusive developers before MGM makes a decision.

http://kotaku.com/5707833/james-bond...icense-tosneak

Kalyx triaD 12-07-2010 08:18 PM

I love the simplistic reasoning of these companies:

GoldenEye Wii was well received... It had stealth sections > Make a Bond game with more stealth sections!

I don't even remember reviews praising the stealth sections in particular. But it's Raven Software so I'm good for this.

Emperor Smeat 12-07-2010 08:28 PM

To be fair, Activision didn't actually say that was a reason but since Raven Software barely makes any console stealth games and GoldenEye was pretty good at adding stealth as an option, its possible Activision saw it as an opportunity to change up the Bond formula.

It wasn't Rainbow Six or Splinter Cell quality in stealth but it did work well in a Bond game.

The other Bond game, Blood Stone, didn't do well in sales or praise and that was more of a typical action style Bond game so it could have been another influence in the change of direction.

Kalyx triaD 12-07-2010 08:50 PM

I promise the failure of Blood Stone was based on everything but it being an 'action packed shooter'. It was just sub-par. lol

It's the difference between an inspired game with a vision in mind and a simple cash-in. Sometimes it overlaps and companies get lucky, but usually we see bullshit that deserves to get the cold shoulder.

The upcoming Thor game will probably play like God of War, but in the way Origins Wolverine played like GoW. Origins had a vision in mind for how a Wolverine game should play (made by Raven Software!), and GoW was a sensible point of reference. Thor may play like GoW simply because the subject matter is similar. Entire games were made out of shallow concepts like that before. When I seen the pic of Thor on top of some beast, it fueled my prediction further.

I just hate game development like that.

This is the worst news I've read in a while.

There isn't much that separates the Resident Evil series from other third-person shooters these days. The one thing the series held true to over the years was its tank controls and "you can't shoot and walk" routine. Non-fans of the games have complained about the series' old-school sensibilities for a while now, and it looks like Capcom has finally given in to their whining.

In Resident Evil: Mercenaries for the 3DS, you'll be able to move and shoot. Personally, I won't do it, not unless the game becomes unplayable to play it that way. The way the Resident Evil series forces you to play keep away with your enemies is easily my favorite thing about it. Underneath all the spooky atmosphere and scripted scares, the need to run from your enemies so that you can shoot them from a safe distance is the one thing that kept the series scary. Without that, I'm honestly not that interested in playing it anymore.

Or am I being too harsh?
No you're not... This news is terrible. Capcom is fucking trolling with this. I hope the other RE 3DS game holds true to the RE trope.

Sometime in 2012 I'm calling a 1600 "sweet spot"

Funky Fly 12-08-2010 07:11 PM

That would be gay, because you get 1600 for $20. We get 1400 for $20.

G 12-08-2010 07:15 PM

But you already get 1200 for more than we pay, right?

Funky Fly 12-08-2010 07:23 PM

We get cards in 1400 and 2800 increments. If all the DLC starts coming out at 1600, it makes those 1400 cards useless.

Emperor Smeat 12-08-2010 08:06 PM

Depending on how you interpret what one of the EA bosses said, EA might be getting rid of single player games or pushing more emphasis on multiplayer/co-op only games in the near future.

Quote:

Chatting with trade site Develop, Gibeau says "I volunteer you to speak to EA's studio heads; they'll tell you the same thing. They're very comfortable moving the discussion towards how we make connected gameplay – be it co-operative or multiplayer or online services – as opposed to fire-and-forget, packaged goods only, single-player, 25-hours-and you're out. I think that model is finished."

"Online is where the innovation, and the action, is at".
This plan would benefit their One Time Pass a lot since now you would be required to activate or pay just to play the game instead of before only needing to activate/pay for multiplayer modes and not single/offline modes.

It is also possible EA just wants to add even more DLC and pay content while focusing less time on needing to create a single player mode or content. Sports games could be affected by getting rid of campaigns or Be A Pro mode.

They're not doing away with 1 player games. That's just stupid. When less than half of all 360s have gold accounts and games like Mass Effect 2 are licenses to print money, it just means that they're going to focus more on multiplayer aspects of gaming.

Emperor Smeat 12-08-2010 11:40 PM

The interview was somewhat vague since it is almost like he hints its possible in the future for EA to drop single player from games especially after their sports games gained a ton of money from DLC and online purchases ($45 million alone from FIFA 09 & 10 in DLC, Madden 10 or 11 had 35 people spend $1000 each on stats cards).

It was also odd for him to even mention it as a possibility based on the studios they owned and the games they make but since he mentioned how all the bosses had a meeting and discussed it, EA must have been considering it as a possible plan for him to leak it. It is similar to Activision saying how its possible to charge a subscription for their games but it hasn't gotten past the idea phase.

If anything EA will probably test the idea with a game and if the consumers hate it, they'll forget the idea even existed.

LoDownM 12-08-2010 11:52 PM

I fear for Bioware if EA does this.

Funky Fly 12-08-2010 11:59 PM

Washington, who says he only just heard about the game from his nephew, is basing his case on the claim that in 2003 Rockstar met with him to speak about his life growing up in gangs, during which time he told the developers, among other things, "how the teen-agers (sic) in his gang rode around on bicycles".

"The plaintiff had never seen the game. He did not own or play video games, but it seemed possible that he had been included in the game," the official legal complaint reads. "He then recalled the meeting in or about 2003, and it began to dawn on him that his image had been stolen for the game."

"Upon examination of images of 'CJ' and comparison to his photos from that year and other evidence, it became clear that Rockstar had stolen his image and never paid him."

For his troubles, Washington - who is suing not only Rockstar but the game's publisher Take-Two as well - is after 25% of the profits generated from sales of San Andreas. Which adds up to, oh, $250 million.

Good luck with that, "Shagg".

Take-Two has responded to the allegations with a brief statement, which reads "The Company believes the lawsuit is completely without merit and will vigorously defend itself in the matter."

In LOL-worthy news, EA's online store accidentally gave away stuff about Mass Effect 3 that was meant to be debuted on Spike's VGA show this weekend.

Similar to the Halo series, ME 3 will have Earth be the main setting of the game since the enemies of the series managed to find and attack Earth.

The rumor of a Mass Effect multiplayer spin-off game to arrive somewhere in 2011 was confirmed to be fake and that the teaser video shown is actually part of the Mass Effect 3 debut video.

PC version pricing also leaked at being $59.95 on EA Store and $59.99 everywhere else.

In unrelated news, Nintendo reveals parts of the story to Super Mario Bros that people might have missed or never knew in the collectible book included with the anniversary edition of Super Mario All-stars.

The blocks Mario always smashes are actually Toads turned by Koopa magic, Goombas are corrupted toads, and the Piranha Plants are actually corrupted fire flower plants. Also, Peach at any time could have reversed the magic but felt like having others do it for her.

Another "dark and gritty" take on something that doesn't need to be "dark and gritty". I wish they would just stop this crap already. I loved SSX Tricky btw. They should have gone back to the OTT style of that game or one of the others.

Until CoD and such like die (which isn't for a very long time) all these other franchises and series are going to go all "dark and gritty" one by one to try and get a similar fan base and sales figures. Pretty soon games will be as varied and as colourful as a pair of identicle twin emos.

I just don't understand why anyone would take a series that looked like this:
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ieRzD-JIKnE?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;color1=0xe1600f&amp;color2=0xfebd01"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ieRzD-JIKnE?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;color1=0xe1600f&amp;color2=0xfebd01" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Which was successful enough for multiple sequels and suddenly think going in the completely opposite direction would be a good idea. I can understand wanting to "reinvent" the series but if they wanted to do that, they could have picked something closer to the original games. Anime style or Jet Set Radio graffiti style. Anything with a bright, light hearted look but not the dark and dull "gritty action" look. It doesn't fit or make sense for SSX.

Xero 12-12-2010 10:53 PM

We're in a dull, depressing generation.

I 100% agree with you, though. Loved Tricky and SSX3. Have both for PS2 (Tricky was my first PS2 game). The game should be up-beat and bright. They could throw in a few "serious"/"gritty" portions, maybe in a career and a few tracks or something, but if the game's overtone is all doom and gloom I'm not sure how I'll feel about it.

But we don't know if that was just a trailer to make it look "cool" and "modern". Could be one character's introduction and others will have different personalities (wacky, colorful, etc). Which, if that's the case, it'll be fine.

Xero 12-12-2010 10:59 PM

Actually, if the game's subtitle of "Deadly Decent" sticks my previous post is moot and it'll be all doom and gloom. Fuck.

But it could go either way with that. Again, could just be a preliminary trailer for a character.

According to the site's official writeup, SSX: Deadly Descents tells the story of a team seeking " to be the first to descend the faces of the most treacherous mountain ranges on the planet." The globetrotting snowboard supercrossers will be shredding down the Himalayas, Patagonia, the Alps and ice ranges of Antarctica. Players will be battling both the mountain and a rival team seeking the same claim as yours.

"In SSX: Deadly Descents the first goal is to survive. The second, in true SSX fashion, is to look good doing it."

Here are the three screenshots. Note that your helicopter is named Elise, probably a nod to veteran character Elise Riggs, one of only four snowboarders to appear in all five SSX titles to date. Given that this is a completely different SSX, it may be that neither she nor any of the past characters appear in Deadly Descents, but no one can know for sure right now.

Can't wait until Madden comes out with a Storyline mode in which you're a thug coming up from the streets and the majority of it is playing football on the street in between street fighting Streets of Rage style.

Drakul 12-12-2010 11:07 PM

If they did this sort of thing to NBA Jam, people would be up in arms over it.

Anyway, EA added a forum for the game and people are telling them it all sucks.

Here.

G 12-12-2010 11:10 PM

I dunno, I'm kinda liking the whole dark and gloomy idea. The whole premise of trying to descend all these dangerous mountains seems pretty cool to me. I will be keeping an eye out for this

Xero 12-12-2010 11:13 PM

To be fair, it's cool that they're doing something different. And who knows, it MIGHT be good and it MIGHT be successful. I loved the colorful stuff so much, but if the gameplay is FUN and not an all-out sim, it has potential.

Almost thinking it could be a combination of SSX and Road Rash now, which would be pretty cool, especially with weapons.

Drakul 12-12-2010 11:15 PM

But it's not SSX. They could/should remove the SSX from the title and just call it Deadly Decent because it has no resemblence to the old games in any way.

Then they can go and send another team off to make an actual SSX game.

G 12-12-2010 11:31 PM

Maybe that is why it appeals to me so much, because I have never played a SSX game. So I wouldn't have any problems with whatever brand name they slap on it.

Maybe they don't think an actual SSX game would go over well. This way, they have the name. It's a name people know, no matter how different the product is, people will buy it on name value alone.

If they had any inclination to actually make another SSX in the old style it would be made. Maybe they don't think it will sell. I don't think the Wii version did well, but I'm not sure on that.

Regardless, I don't have a problem with them reinventing it as much as I have a problem with it becoming a sim. But I do agree that, realistically, it should be a separate franchise.

Emperor Smeat 12-13-2010 12:33 AM

SSX Blur did around 300,000 for sales on the Wii but the bigger problems were EA sort of half-assed the controls and critics were mostly split on the game being average.

I think the Skate team is making the new SSX game which explains the gritter and realistic feel instead of the traditional over-the-top action and characters that made the series popular in the first place.

Then again, EA has done a lot of WTF and dumb decisions for 2010 so it make sense they end the year with another bad decision.

Guillermo Del Toro and THQ's newest game, inSane, announced to be part of a trilogy of games. It confirms the ending is either going to be a cliff hanger or end in a way that guarantees a sequel.

Seeing as THQ learned nothing from the Too Human fiasco of making a trilogy before getting any critical or consumer feedback, the odds on the series even making to a sequel would be slim.

The first game in the series is set for a 2013 release date.

I see nothing wrong with this SSX. Infact, I see it as a positive thing. It's been the exact same for ten years now and a change was needed. The new look has nothing to do with CoD or anything like that. Nothing can stay the same forever and SSX is no different. For all we know, EA could just be trying out something new with the new look.

Shigeru Miyamoto did the same thing with Zelda. Everyone was acting like it was the end of the world when the first images of Wind Waker were released, but the game was actually pretty damn good and the looked carried on for a few more games but nobody complained about it, then it went to the "dark and gritty" look with Twilight Princess and again, nobody complained. Infact, everyone wet themselves when the first images of Twilight Princess were released, and I know for sure that the look of it had nothing to do with CoD, Emo Kids or "but every game is like that now".

But I digress a bit, the way to be successful in the computer games industry, and I guess in any industy, is to no be afraid to try new things. Be risky and just go for it. EA are definitely not scared to try new things and personally, I think their risks pay off.

Also, with a name like "Deadly Descents" you can't really expect happy sunshines and crazy characters with real life environments. And they couldn't have made it a separate game as they already have the SSX series. Why would they make a snowboarding game not be part of their snowboarding series just because it looks different?

But anyway, it's very clear that your doing the whole "judging a book by it's cover" thing, but just like Wind Waker, "Deadly Descents" might turn out to be a really good game.

But yeah, like I said, I see nothing wrong with the new SSX and I actually think it looks and sounds interesting, and after I read more and see more of the game, I'll probably be able to tell if I'll buy it or not. But at the moment, I think I very well may get the game, but we'll see.

Xero 12-14-2010 01:22 PM
