I just looked at the WWE title history and noticed something. John Cena has beaten everyone back who has beaten him for the title except for when he's in a triple threat match or there's some kind of stipulation. For example:

He loses his first title to Edge then wins it back from Edge. He loses it to RVD and then there's a triple threat match where Edge wins.

Later on he beats Randy Orton then loses it to him then wins it back.

Sheamus then beats John but he wins it back.

Batista beats John but then he wins it back.

He then loses it in a Fatal 4 way.

It's like he gets the last laugh in the feud and if he doesn't end up with the title it's because it takes a triple threat, fatal 4 way or some other kind of stipulation to take the title off of him for a while. You can say he didn't beat CM Punk to win back the title but the future is still unwritten and it could be looking ugly.

Also, Triple H has been awarded the WWE and WHC titles 2 times each without having to face anyone. That's 4 times he became champion without having to face anyone, unless I'm mistaken.

When did this happen?

I remember he won the title(s) a couple of times when they were "vacant".

He won the WWE Title at Unforgiven 99 after Vince vacated it. And he won the WHC in an Elimination Chamber after it became vacant due to a Double Finish (pinfall/tapout iirc).

Are you confusing these instances of winning the belt when it was vacated with being awarded the belt?

I think he's referring to HHH's WWE title win at No Way Out 2009. WWE has his opponent listed as "n/a" but he won it in the Elimination Chamber and Edge was the first one eliminated.

Also, he was awarded the WHC when Eric Bishoff introduced it in 2002

Yeah I'm referring to the "n/a". I didn't know what happened on those dates so I assumed each instance was with the title vacated somehow or something.

He's been booked almost exactly like Hogan in the 1980s and 1990s or even Triple H in the early Brand Split era where both guys always got the last laugh or key win even if it meant the lack of new stars created or main event becoming stale.

Although the biggest difference was Hogan politicked and back stabbed a lot to keep his grip and Triple H benefited a lot from his marriage while it appears Cena's grip is done on purpose by Vince.
