Cody Rhodes has posted a letter to his late father Dusty Rhodes on BeingBrandiRunnels.com. Here is an excerpt from the letter:

Right outta’ the gate, thank you Brandi Runnels. Thank you for letting me utilize your groovy blog to share a few thoughts with followers of the Rhodes Family…our family, and thank you for the chance that somewhere & somehow my Father will be able to hear what I’m saying.

And secondly, there is such a thing as too much death…too much melancholy…too morbid of a discussion, and for those who don’t want to engage in that; I suggest you read this no further and enjoy the rest of your day or night. No offense taken.

So where do we begin?? Why did I even want to become a professional wrestler?? Here’s something I only ever shared with my employer, not even Dad…

It was a picture.

…a picture that used to adorn the mantle in my parents’ bedroom at our ol’ Marietta home. The bedroom with a “king” bed that was the size of a Manhattan apartment. It’s a picture of Dusty Rhodes holding up the then WWWF Title(world wide wrestling federation). The picture was taken on September 26 1977 in the world’s most famous arena Madison Square Garden. Dad had told me about Studio54, he and Mom hanging out with Warhol and other luminaries…he told me about the cops on horseback…the broadway nights, but as far as little seven year old me was concerned, I was confused…I was confused because my Dad never was the WWWF Champion.

So he told me…”champion’s advantage”…Daddy had won the contest by count-out, and the title cannot change hands on a count-out or disqualification. They took it from him.

So I knew, I knew at seven years old…I knew what my job was…what the mission was.

And of course, I became obsessed with pro-wrestling, I tried to be an insufferable know-it-all when it came to the history and the holds. But the mission didn’t change.

It was to win the title we now call The WWE World Heavyweight Championship. To put it on his shoulder while he sat in the front row with my Mother and Sisters, and I would tell him “we get to keep it this time and you were right…it is real”

So that dream, it dies with you Dream. I didn’t get it done.

As Tom Paris would say…”no hopes, no disappointments”

Damn that last bit :(

According to the Observer, Vince and/or the WWE recently lost interest in having Kalisto be the heir to Rey Mysterio as the next mega latino star of the company. Also seems to have given up on Los Matadores in general.

Next NXT tryout might include a few Mexican wrestlers to find the next top star for the WWE's latino market.

I hope not. A loss for either guy would be terrible for their careers/reputation. Both Sting and Bray need wins in their next match. Especially in the case of Bray - the guy needs to continue his winning momentum.

I'd much rather see Sting beat someone like Miz, while Wyatt goes over Reigns again (Wyatt and Harper over Reigns and Ambrose).

Mr. Nerfect 07-21-2015 07:59 PM

Interjecting Sting into the Reigns/Ambrose vs. Wyatts program is pretty dumb. I can see the crowd turning on it pretty fast. They'll probably do an injury angle with Ambrose, but smart crowds will still be wanting him over Reigns and, possibly, Sting.

Mr. Nerfect 07-21-2015 08:01 PM

I don't buy the giving up on Kalisto thing. The dude has been fantastic in pretty much every match they've put him in. Los Matadores also just won a match on RAW. They've been a joke team that has allowed two good wrestlers to keep their jobs for a couple of years now.

At SummerSlam, The Prime Time Players vs. The New Day vs. Los Matadores vs. Lucha Dragons seems like a sane pre-show title match.

Many in the company expected Owens to win the US Title from Cena at the PPV, but obviously that didn’t happen. He’s been taken out of his feud with Cena so Cena can move on to Seth Rollins. As of now there are no plans to have him featured at SummerSlam; he’s currently set to face Finn Balor at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn the night before the PPV.

NOW, you may all riot.

You may have noticed the many apron bumps at last night's WWE Battleground pay-per-view, more than a dozen altogether. One of the most impressive apron bumps last night was the splash from Big E. Dave Meltzer noted on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE officials are now having talents do more bumps on the apron, which is actually the hardest part of the ring. For what it's worth, Meltzer noted that this new idea of doing more apron bumps is directly related to Ring of Honor.
Besides the apron spots, other stuff the WWE is doing against ROH includes rumors of them buying out arenas ROH books shows in, rumors of them trying to get close to NJPW just so that they drop the ROH deal, and booking upcoming NXT shows directly against ROH's big events to hurt ROH's gate revenues. Also being teased the WWE is making a huge announcement soon which is tied into the WWE-ROH war.

As noted, the new Daniel Bryan book “Yes! My Improbable Journey to the Main Event of WrestleMania” will be released tomorrow, and so far the book is generating very positive reviews. Bill Jones of AVClub.com has given the book an A-, and says the memoir is “worth a read.”

One of the more notable passages in the book features Bryan recalling an instance of disrespect, as he tells the story of former WWE star Ezekiel Jackson bullying Bryan into giving up an aisle seat during a flight to WrestleMania.

Bryan says he never really experienced any disrespect from another superstar in WWE, until the plane ride to ‘Mania. Bryan says he was sitting in an aisle seat, when Jackson, who now works as Big Ryck in Lucha Underground, asked “which one of you rookies has an aisle seat?” Bryan responded by saying he did, to which Jackson said “not anymore you don’t”. Jackson was upset that he had a middle seat, and when Bryan said “what do you mean?”, Jackson said “I’m taking it [the seat].”

Bryan said he had already been in a bad mood from the previous night, and didn’t feel like taking any “shit”, so he stood up to Jackson and said “no, actually, you’re not.” Bryan added he would have gladly given up the seat had Jackson asked nicely.

When Jackson got angry with Bryan’s response, Bryan revealed William Regal stood up and chastised Jackson. Regal told Jackson Bryan is like a son to him, and that Bryan has more talent in his little finger than Jackson does in his entire body.

With that, Jackson relented and walked away.

Another exert from Bryan's book.

I actually found myself taking the "Vince side" too.

Personally, I'd much rather see Rollins be more of a dirty and aggressive heel. The change is very much needed. This is what I was talking about a while ago.

This "disappointed dad" angle is just terrible for Rollins. To me, it's making him really boring and predictable. With Rollins being more aggressive and "Edge like", all that predictability would go out the window and we'd actually have a main event heel who would be entertaining to watch and actually pose a threat to the main event faces. He'd also have us all be intrigued as to what he may do next.

It beats the current formula, which is pretty much:

Rollins: I'm the best.
Face: I'm the number on contender.
Rollins: I'm scared of you, so I'll run away and avoid you until our PPV match.
*Rollins loses all/most matches leading up to the PPV*
Triple H: You keep losing. You've let me down. I am sad.
*Rollins manages to retain at PPV*

Is Rusev still in character? Why the accent?
And damn, Sandow is quick on the mic.
Props to Austin Creed!

Cool King 07-22-2015 03:00 PM

Rusev isn't in character. That's his actual accent.

At 2:10, Sandow appears to be reading from a piece of paper, unless he was doing that only for the "sales pitch". Also, Sandow knows that Vega has class. He's a smart man.

Watching that video, Xavier Woods comes across to me as a bad winner. I can only assume that he would be a sore loser if he were to lose. Especially if it was at a game that he views himself being great at.

Cool video though. I always find it interesting to watch wrestlers interact and chill out with each other out of character, and just show themselves being "normal people".

Wanted that to happen when Bray debuted and beat him in the inferno match. Seems a little forced now, but I'm ok with it. Bray now has healing powers and heals Kane's broken ankle?

You know, Kane being the new Wyatt member wouldn't be the worst. If he goes after Seth Rollins eventually, that can force The Shield back together for a one-time match.

It is thought that once Triple H and Stephanie take over WWE, Dunn will be one of the first to go. It is thought that they are not fans of his, which would make a lot of sense. We may be seeing an issue with Kevin Owens being caught in the middle of a corporate battle. Triple H wants something, and Kevin Dunn does not. Therefore, one or the other happens. Vince is trapped between what his son-in-law wants versus what his long time confidante wants.
Quote:

It was really promoted as a two match show. John Cena and Kevin Owens once again stole the show inside the ring, with each kicking out of the others' finishers until Cena made him submit to the STF. The submission was Owens' third straight major show loss, with his loss to Cena and his NXT title loss to Finn Balor. While he is clearly a main roster star, the idea he's something special and a protected headliner was out the window with that finish. The fact he wasn't protected from being a face in the crowd in the pull-apart brawl on Raw says the same thing.

ROH reportedly sold 1,100 tickets for their Field of Honor show that night, a number they were happy with. They were expecting 2,000 tickets sold but The Observer notes that ticket sales stalled once WWE announced Takeover. Ticket sales also reportedly stalled for Jim Ross' "Ringside" one-man show, which takes place in nearby Manhattan. It was noted that any talks there would have been about moving shows to the afternoon to avoid head-to-head competition were decided against, but it wasn't specified which company decided against making a move. WWE actually canceled a live event in White Plains, NY that night to avoid splitting their audience.

We've noted how there are moves being made behind-the-scenes in WWE that relate to ROH. WWE has reportedly contacted at least one venue that ROH uses with the idea that WWE will run them if they no longer book ROH.

WWE booking Liger could be the start of a relationship between NJPW and WWE, who hasn't officially worked with any groups in Japan for years. ROH was not aware of Liger being booked for Takeover until the news broke and The Observer notes that even by pro wrestling standards, the booking is a major double-cross. It should be noted that Liger is able to book himself anywhere but NJPW is promoting the NXT appearance.
Quote:

New Japan, at a press conference on 7/18 to promote the G-1 Climax tournament, listed ROH along with the NWA, GWF, CMLL, Revolution Pro (in the U.K.) and wXw (in Germany) as its international business partners, and did not list WWE in that category. But those close to the situation note that the only business partner New Japan is loyal to is CMLL. It was noted that even when it came to being offered an international superstar like Rey Mysterio, New Japan nixed discussions because he appears for CMLL's rival promotion in Mexico.

The story last week regarding working with AO1 productions going forward was a lot bigger than it was made out to be. The new production people were brought in and while not all, but many of the former production people were let go. The people who were let go were the ones the most vocal about complaining about being paid late.

Back on February 19th of this year, WWE Doctor Chris Amann filed a Libel/Slander lawsuit against Phil “CM Punk” Brooks and Colt Cabana, stemming from comments Punk made during an appearance on Colt Cabana’s “Art of Wrestling” podcast.

The Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court has released court documents which provide updates on the current status of the case, and what will happen next.

The last three entries of the document, which you can view below, are the keys. It looks like there were a few initial amendments to the Complaint and Punk’s initial Motion to strike the Complaint was continued, likely until Colt Cabana’s attorney entered his appearance. Then on July 20th, you see the two entries below where the Judge denied (DND) Punk’s Motion and Cabana’s Motion (Participant Brooks and Colton, as that is Punk and Cabana’s real names, respectively). The Judge then assigned the case to a category and allowed 28 months for Discovery.

In layman’s terms, Amann’s lawsuit has survived initial procedural challenges to its sufficiency. The parties now have up to 28 months to exchange information, obtain medical documentation, depose witnesses, etc. That doesn’t mean that the case will go to trial or that the suit ultimately will be successful. But it does mean that this issue isn’t going away anytime soon.

An announcement will be made officially later today that TripleMania, AAA's biggest event of the year, will be airing live on PPV in the U.S. and Canada on Sunday, 8/9.

The show will be airing from 7-10 p.m. Eastern time live on all the major PPV carriers, through inDemand, Dish, DirecTV, Bell Canada Satellite and Rogers in Canada, headlined by the first-time ever match with Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Myzteziz.

The show will be priced at $19.95 for SD and $29.95 for HD.

Two other matches announced for the show are Alberto El Patron vs. Brian Cage in a hair vs. hair match, and a trios match with Los Villanos III & IV & V facing The Psycho Circus in what will be the retirement match for Villano III, one of Mexico's most enduring stars of the modern era.

Most of the AAA-based stars of Lucha Underground are expected to perform on the show. The complete lineup is expected to be released on Friday.

The Daily Beast has a new article asking “if WWE is too scared to go LGBT.”

The article talks about Darren Young coming out to TMZ back in 2013 but says WWE hasn’t let the character come out. They spoke to Stephanie McMahon at ESPN’s ESPY awards last week and she commented on the Darren Young character:

“Darren Young was the first WWE superstar to really come out as being homosexual, but his character in the show is not. At least, we haven’t done anything with it either way—just yet.”

Stephanie also suggested that a gay character could happen in WWE:

“It could very well pop up in WWE because we are all about what’s relevant, and what’s pop culture, and what people want to see. So if there is an opportunity, we might just take it.”
Was Rico a gay character or just a very flamboyant stylist? Feels like the WWE has had a gay character before or maybe even WCW but don't remember if Kee Wee was meant to be a gay wrestler.

If there was a spot where a heel was faking an injury, you had to use the team "feigning" instead of "faking." Another term banned was "Feud," and announcers had to use the term "rivalry." When Teddy Long was General Manager, he would almost always use the phrase, "Tonight, it will be" (when announcing matches on the show). Vince got sick of it and banned usage of the words "it will be" when used in that order. The term "Major announcement" was banned, and that every announcement had to be called simply an "announcement." He also banned the term "non-title" match. He hated the term. At first he wanted to get over the phrase "title-free" match, but that sounded so bad that it was changed to "the title is not on the line." But he preferred just never calling attention to it. If it's a title match, you say it, if not, nothing is said. Until WrestleMania when Paul Heyman brought it up as part of the buildup, it was banned to mention that Roman Reigns was Samoan, or that he was a second generation wrestler, or related to the Usos or Dwayne Johnson. Another banned phrase was that the "title is held up." Instead, the term he wanted was the title was in a "state of abeyance." That was always so awkward because nobody talked like that.

Some other sheet news includes:
  • AXS TV ended up extending their deal with NJPW to be a multi-year deal with season 3 starting this August and plans for 2016 to have weekly NJPW shows instead of doing them in seasonal chunks. Main goal is to get the replays on AXS be just a few weeks behind current storylines/shows at the time.
  • Supposedly the crowd at Full Sail last week during the new set of NXT tapings were very vocal about losing out on the next Takerover event and possibly future ones. Booed all mentions of the upcoming Brooklyn show and might be edited out for this set of shows.

I don't think there was ever any reference to Rico being gay. I don't think Kwee Wee was gay either. Weren't him and Paisley together?

Pretty sure Goldust was meant to be gay. Once in a while they'd pass a lot of it off as "mind games" but most of the gay stuff he did just got him into trouble. Didn't make any sense as "mind games".

That was actually only 82. The crowds always end up counting seconds and not full rotations, so they're always counting faster than Cesaro is swinging. That said, it's no less goddamn impressive a feat.

one of the great moments in Smoky Mountain Wrestling.

Jim Cornette's awesome promo on Rock and Roll Express after his Heavenly Bodies lose a loser leaves town against them.

Cornette concedes defeat to the team he and his teams over the years have spent some 10 years battling.

such a great moment too when the Heavenly Bodies leave the building to Bob Seger's Famous Final Scene.
