The last line of that. “Everybody seemed to be rooting against me. I don’t know why. I didn’t do anything.”

The guy was already developing his wrestling gimmick and didn’t even know it.

It’s weird how time plays tricks with your mind like that. Or moreover how your mind plays tricks with time. Sometimes I like to think about the distance between events and just think about how close or far they seem apart.

Vince K bought the WWF in 1982. Brock Lesnar’s debut technically falls in the first half of the Vince McMahon, Jr. regime.

Angle would have been 18 here. He’d win the gold medal less than a decade later and would be WWF Champion 4 years after that. His signature run in the WWE would have been over within 20 years of that article.

Mr. Nerfect 07-31-2023 12:57 PM

I was thinking the other day about WrestleMania IX and King of the Ring 1993. You go 10 years after that and Hogan is Mr. America, Bret is retired, the Attitude era has been and gone. Austin’s gone. It’s basically the same distance between those 1993 moments and Daniel Bryan winning the WWE Title from Cena. And that from now.

drave 08-04-2023 12:49 PM

sometimes it's strange seeing "Attitude Era" wrasslers take on those from the era before. I can't think of any examples right now, but they're there.

Lol remember when Hacksaw Jim Duggan was a full time member of the roster in like 2006 when he had a team with SuperCrazy

Nailz looking like Shawn Michaels nowadays.

Stone Cold Shawn Michaels

Steve Austin vs. Jake Roberts at King of the Ring is probably the most prolific of that category.

To add to that last one, HHH vs. Ultimate Warrior, the New Age Outlaws vs. The Legion of Doom, and of course, Hogan vs. The Rock, which is the actual most prolific.

How about New Generation vs WWWF

Bret vs Backlund lol. That's still so crazy that Backlund got another albeit short title run. Especially after how his last run ended.

Vastardikai 08-07-2023 03:42 PM

A couple of wild ones:

Steven Wright (Alex Wright's father) vs Chris Ben... some guy
Bryan Danielson vs Kamala
Will Ospreay vs Vader
Terry Funk vs Eddie Guerrero

I remember reading that Ahmed Johnson had been doing it for about 6 years by the time he got to the WWF. You wouldn’t think it looking at his work there. You can see how he deteriorated over the years. Even his selling got worse than it is here.

Mr. Nerfect 08-07-2023 04:45 PM

I don’t remember specific matches, but Rick Martel in WCW always strikes me as surreal. I think he mainly worked Booker T. He also apparently showed up at the infamous Vengeance: Night of Champions show in 2007 to do something with Deuce & Domino. Just weird.

Mr. Nerfect 08-07-2023 04:49 PM

Oh, anytime anyone wrestled Tatanka during that SmackDown run.

Yeah he and Tony Garea were in the front row IIRC

They're showing Raw here where we're having dinner. I don't know who's in the match, but from what I can gather, it's a four way of some sort and holy fuck does it look like shit. It's not so much a match as a stunt show and I feel more assured than ever that I made the right choice in giving up on this horseshit when I did.

omfg, I don't feel like Storm was appreciated for his time there. I can't remember if it was him or someone else, but there was a promo where everyone was getting hyped.

Storm kept the same :| and said "this is my excited face". That, and tourette Goldust seriously are some of the funniest things in WWE, ever.

I've always felt kind of bad for Jarrett. He was fine as far as in-ring ability goes but he was always surrounded by people who were infinitely better than him in almost every measurable way. Wind the clock back to the WWE in 1993. You've got Jarret, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, Scott Hall, and Curt Hennig all in your locker room. Who are you picking to be a centerpiece in your main event scene?

They should bring in dad bad Ultimo to fight dad bod Rey in a one-off "US Title Open Challenge" thing

If you had told me 25 years ago that a Rey/Ultimo match would still be possible in this time I'd probably throw myself off a bridge.
