Marvel Studios has assigned Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to write a script for a Dr. Strange movie, according to Deadline Hollywood. Donnelly and Oppenheimer wrote the Conan movie (see “Ratner Helming Conan”) and an early draft of Cowboys and Aliens.

A Dr. Strange movie has been in development for a long time, including a brief period when Neil Gaiman was moving toward writing a script for a version to be directed by Guillermo del Toro (see “Gaiman Wants to Write Dr. Strange Movie”).

Rammsteinmad 06-22-2010 02:20 PM

To be honest I don't think Dr. Strange is a big enough character to really make much of a movie. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I doubt many non-comic fans have any idea who he is. However, the Dr. Strange movie from the 70's or whenever is absolutely awful, so a decent DS movie would be cool.

Also, just for the record I really liked the animated Dr. Strange movie from a few years back, so if it's anything like that I'm happy.

Reavant 06-22-2010 10:16 PM

Liam neeson = dr strange

Rammsteinmad 06-23-2010 03:54 AM

Liam Neeson playing Dr. Strange would be fucking sweet. Then again, Liam Neeson playing any comic character above the age of 35 would be fucking sweet!

Comic Book Movie's Bryan Kritz hears Hank and Janet may have already been cast. "A well trusted source close to Marvel Studios is saying that Nathan Fillion ('Serenity') will be playing Dr. Henry 'Hank' Pym. The actor is in final negotiations for a multi film deal that would start with 'The Avengers' in 2012. Eva Longoria ('Desperate Housewives') will play Janet Van Dyne as has long been speculated ever since leaving Marvel with a stack of Avengers resource material (that's comic books to you and me) in 2008. This would actually make her the second person cast for the movie, only behind that of Robert Downey Jr," he writes. He also notes it is unknown at this time if Hank and Janet will have superhero indentities or just appear as S.H.I.E.LD. agents. Of course, I'm always a little more skeptical of "well trusted sources" and "studio insiders." In the past, I've called them cover identities for Mysterio ... and really, why stop now?
Of course Whedon is gonna try to get some of his "crew" in there.

Inadequacy 06-23-2010 02:30 PM

I love Nathan fillion but I've never liked Hank Pym.

Aaarrgh

Kalyx triaD 06-24-2010 01:46 AM

I like Pym as a civilian super-scientist who hates Mr. Fantastic, but Ant/Giant-Man is fucking lame.

Alice Eve is in talks to portray Emma Frost in First Class. On wait, not the Emma Frost that appeared as an early 20s girl in Origins Wolverine? I guess it is more reboot than prequel. That will make for three sub-universes Fox is producing; First Class, Wolverine, and Deadpool. It's a step back into territory we're already used to, but it's an odd reversal that one continuity actually splits into different parts - in any medium.

Marvel Entertainment, LLC announced today that it has appointed Jeph Loeb as Executive Vice President, Head of Television, a newly created division of Marvel Entertainment. In this new role, Mr. Loeb will work alongside Dan Buckley, Publisher & President of the Print, Animation & Digital Divisions, Marvel Worldwide, Inc., to translate Marvel’s popular characters and stories to the television medium, in both live-action and animation formats. In addition to these responsibilities, Mr. Loeb will oversee the development and distribution of live-action, animated and direct-to-DVD series.

parkmania 06-29-2010 12:42 PM

It looks like the stunning Alice Eve (She’s Out of My League) will play Emma Frost in Matthew Vaughn’s reboot of the X-Men film franchise, X-Men: First Class, which features a younger version of Professor Xavier’s mutant team than the one depicted in the first X-Men trilogy.

Created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, Emma Frost (aka The White Queen) first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #129 (January 1980). Known for her dry caustic wit, Emma Frost is a telepath who made the transition from one of the X-Men’s most dangerous foes to one of its key members.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the British born actress, who also auditioned for the role of Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger, is in final negotiations with Fox to star in X-Men: First Class. Eve will join a cast that includes Michael Fassbender as Magneto and James McAvoy as Professor X (see “Magneto Cast”).

EDIT: OK, so Kalyx said this already, but at least I showed a pic.

parkmania 06-29-2010 01:13 PM

Marvel Studios announced today that Oscar-winning actor Tommy Lee Jones will play Colonel Chester Phillips in Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger. Jones will join a cast that includes Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan and Stanley Tucci in the Marvel Studios production that will debut on July 22nd, 2011.

It was actress Hayley Atwell who first leaked the news that Jones would be appearing in the Captain America film (see “Tommy Lee Jones in Cap”) back in May, but the role that the Oscar-winner would be playing was not revealed. It turns out that it will be a key one. In the Captain America continuity it was Colonel Phillips who recruited Steve Rogers for Project Rebirth, the secret experiment that created the Super Soldier who became known as Captain America.

Rammsteinmad 06-29-2010 05:55 PM

Sounds cool. Captain America is getting a lot more big names than I actually thought it would. I'm actually pretty excited to see Chris Evans as Cap.

Fignuts 06-29-2010 07:46 PM

Yeah, he's pretty underrated imo.

Swiss Ultimate 06-30-2010 07:38 AM

Anybody else notice that in Iron Man 2 Tony Stark had possession of the Captain America shield?

XL 06-30-2010 07:47 AM

I'm gonna guess...everyone noticed that!?

Rammsteinmad 06-30-2010 09:23 AM

Yeah, it had more screen time than Nick Fury.

parkmania 06-30-2010 01:01 PM

Marvel Studios has revealed that Dominic Cooper (An Education, Tamara Drewe, Mamma Mia!) is joining the cast of Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger, which will be shooting this summer in England, and is slated to debut in theaters on July 22, 2011. Cooper joins a cast that includes Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Stanley Tucci, and Tommy Lee Jones (see “Tommy Lee Jones Confirmed”).

Cooper will portray the younger version of Howard Stark, the father of Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) and the founder of Stark Industries. John Slattery (Mad Men) portrays the elder version of Howard Stark in the current box office blockbuster Iron Man 2.

Jeph Loeb had a few general points to make about Marvel's new TV ventures. All shows will either air on ABC or ABC Family, which makes sense considering they're all under the Disney corporate umbrella. They'll mostly be looking to do one-hour dramas along the same lines of Smallville, and the key will be finding Marvel characters that lend themselves well to storytelling on a TV budget.
Origin, easy. But that's me. Also, some new Alex Ross art:

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.a/6...52f778a970c-pi

Lock Jaw 07-06-2010 01:41 PM

Isn't ABC supposed to be doing a "Fables" series as well? Hopefully they don't drop it in favor of Marvel stuff.

Kalyx triaD 07-06-2010 03:27 PM

Can't imagine why they would drop anything for it, especially with networks wanting to have a lot of the same thing on air.

Kalyx triaD 07-07-2010 08:24 PM

Chris Evans Speaks:

"It’s an amazing costume. Given the fact that his costume is red, white and blue, and it’s tight, and it could be kind of flash and over the top – and given the fact that the movie takes place in the ‘40s and ‘50s – they’ve done a really good job of making it look really cool."

"I think everyone that’s going to see it is going to say, 'Okay, well done. Well done. I think they got the costume right. The casting they completely ruined, but the costume they nailed!'"

In comparison to his lithe, skin-tight Fantastic Four costume, Evans says: “[In the FF suit] …you could move around quite well. This is a little more cumbersome. It doesn’t exactly breathe the way the Fantastic Four costume breathed, but it’s the way it should be. Any type of World War II uniform would be a little chunky, and I think that’s what kind of gives it its character.”

“We’ve been testing a lot of shields. Last time I was in London they had six shields and I had to hold each one, see if I was comfortable with each one, see which one we all thought had the right look. The thing is pretty heavy, so I’m not sure I can throw it that far! I’ll give it my best shot, but hopefully they’ll have some sort of stunt shield when it comes to actually chucking it!”

Fignuts 07-07-2010 10:54 PM

Alex Ross is so fucking awesome.

Jeritron 07-07-2010 11:04 PM

Having him do the opening credits for Spider-Man 2 was the shit

Kalyx triaD 07-07-2010 11:06 PM

Kingdom Come and Justice. That is all.

Lock Jaw 07-08-2010 12:01 AM

I did not care for Justice. (I mean, obviously the art was fantastic, but the story was "meh")

Rammsteinmad 07-08-2010 11:57 AM

That's kinda like most DC epics for me.

Kalyx triaD 07-09-2010 04:16 AM

Nicholas Hoult will play Beast and Caleb Landry Jones will play Banshee in X-Men: First Class. Lucas Till has joined the cast of X-Men: First Class, reportedly as the mutant brother of Cyclops, Alexander "Havok" Summers. (SHH)

Jeritron 07-09-2010 06:22 PM

lol at the kid cast as Beast.

Also just read that Kevin Bacon is in talks to play the main villain of the movie, whoever that may be (it's not Magneto)

What about him is Disney? Because he's a young kid?

I'm just not feeling the X-Men in high school approach

Blitz 07-10-2010 02:29 AM

Fair enough, but don't criticize the actor for it.

Jeritron 07-10-2010 02:32 AM

I didn't say he couldn't act. I was criticizing the casting decision to cast a character like Beast as a teenager. The Disney thing was more of a joke about his age.

Jeritron 07-10-2010 02:34 AM

I can't believe James McEvoy is Professor X...

I will give them Michael Fassebender as Magneto. He was incredible in Inglorious Basterds.
I'm just not very high on the idea of going as young as possible. I feel like they're really going for a Twilight thing here, which they'll probably laugh all the way to bank with, but shit on the property in the process.

Jeritron 07-10-2010 02:35 AM

Same with Spider-Man, if reports are correct

Kalyx triaD 07-10-2010 02:41 AM

Ya know the X-Men were originally a group of teenage superheroes. They met the original Teen Titans once as their concept were so similar.

Jeritron 07-10-2010 02:44 AM

They weren't originally a group of teenagers. They had history with Professor X that dated back to their youths (in some cases), but that was always the backstory and not the main incarnation of the X-Men.
If that backstory was exploited as the main focus of a story later on, then so be it, but it's not their original form.
That's like saying Darth Vader was originally a podracing slave.

Kalyx triaD 07-10-2010 02:49 AM

I'm fairly certain they were teens, or at least young adults, even in their debut books.

Originally yeah, they were teens and whatnot. It's been established later on tho that some members of the X-Men (not just the original 5, mind you) have encountered Xavier in prepubescence. Storm and Jean Grey immediately come to mind.

Jeritron 07-10-2010 03:12 AM

I knew they had long histories with Xavier. I didn't know they were so young in the early books. Were they? That changed quickly.
I'm more familiar with the 80s and 90s X-Men.

Still, I don't think the studio's intentions are so noble as to be true to the first issues.

Danny Electric 07-10-2010 03:58 AM

The boy who's playing Beast is famous in the UK, he was in a series called Skins which is massive over here and he was the boy in About A Boy with Hugh Grant.

XL 07-10-2010 05:47 AM

But more recently got rave reviews for his perormance in A Single Man opposite Colin Firth and was in Clash of the Titans.

Rammsteinmad 07-10-2010 12:24 PM

I'm pretty sure Iceman was only 16 when X-Men first debuted. The other X-Men were probably between 19-23 ish...

Rammsteinmad 07-10-2010 12:25 PM

Not that I give a shit about his age, all this rebooting shit pisses me off, especially if this new continuity is being born from the Wolverine film, which is a prequel to the old continuity.

If they find a way to link First Class to the X-Men Trilogy then at least it'll make some sense.

Lock Jaw 07-10-2010 01:36 PM

I actually liked the various X-Men: First Class comic books.

Jeritron 07-10-2010 03:05 PM

Yea I eat my words about them not being originally younger. I honestly never gathered that. It didn't look it.
I still don't like the direction though. I feel like the intention here is not to be true to the origin comics but rather to bring youth to the franchise and take it in that direction.
Either way I'm just feeling the 80s-90s style of X-Men, which I feel is the version of X-Men that most people have wanted to see and has gotten them to where they are now.

I can deal with them starting over too. I think they screwed the franchise up enough after 2 that going the Batman route is acceptable at some point. I just don't think this is the place or way to start it.
I'd rather see them enter the story in the adult years, and just approach the material differently.

Nope. The original 5 all graduated high school under Xavier. They were all teens, with Iceman being the youngest.

Have a feeling Bacon will be Nathaniel Essex in First Class. I have absolutely nothing to back this up but my gut.

Did sinister ever appear in First Class? I figured he could be a Lucifer flashback.

Kalyx triaD 07-11-2010 10:52 AM

Continuity? Go rent X-Men 1 through 3 as well as Origins and see what Fox thinks of continuity.

Jeritron 07-12-2010 06:31 PM

Is anyone going to say anything about the whole Ed Norton/Avengers debacle going on right now?

Funky Fly 07-12-2010 06:39 PM

Um it's gay?

Jeritron 07-12-2010 06:42 PM

Sounds like Marvel's trying to save a few bucks and slammed Ed Norton, probably to try to defuse the fan complaints.

Kalyx triaD 07-12-2010 07:06 PM

I'm surprisingly indifferent about it all. Sure I expected them to strive for continuity (kinda the point of their current agenda) but I guess it helped that I half expected them to downplay Banner for Hulk altogether anyway.

Jeritron 07-12-2010 07:13 PM

I think a recast is pretty lame though. The whole attraction here is that they built towards this super-movie with individual installments, so to cast a new actor in the role for the first time takes the whole thing down a notch.
It's not disasterous, since it's only The Hulk, but it still sort of feels like they'd be better just leaving him out of it altogether, unless they only show him in Hulk form.

Kalyx triaD 07-12-2010 07:21 PM

I rather they just use Hulk form if Norton couldn't be cast. Norton not making it makes recasting any of the other heroes possible (no matter how small). This is something Marvel should fight to work out. As you said is severely misses the point they were getting at.

XL 07-12-2010 07:23 PM

A recast would make it the third guy to play Banner in as many films. Shitty.

Reavant 07-12-2010 08:40 PM

this

Jeritron 07-14-2010 07:47 PM

I think it's the alien look that's a big turn off to people. I know that has roots in some versions of Thor, but I think the majority of people wanted/expected the ancient looking Norse epic.
I suppose this was a decision based on what would translate best into the universe they're establishing for Iron Man and Captain America.

If the movie works, it works. I am definitely not high on any of the costumes or sets I've seen though.
Conversely, I'm loving everything I see from Captain America.

LuigiD 07-14-2010 08:47 PM

I am a bit sad they did not take the old Norse approach..but I am not upset with that semi-steampunk look they have going. Could be interesting.

Fignuts 07-14-2010 09:49 PM

Doing the ancient norse look would have been taking the easy way out though. As someone who has read all the thor books from his first appearance on, I'm very happy they are showing respect to Kirby's work by going this route with the visuals. Tells me the people working on the movie are legit fans, and gives me hope that the movie will be good.

Jeritron 07-14-2010 09:52 PM

I'm not coming down on you, it's just that the actual iconic look would be pretty ridic in real life. Marvel's been trying not to stray too far from the source material. There's really not a whole lot more that could be done, short of making them look like actual vikings, which would piss off comic nerds everywhere and probably not translate well on film, leaving casual audiences uninterested.

Jeritron 07-16-2010 01:56 AM

Fair enough. I guess I would be more fond of something a bit more medieval and rustic. It's all a bit too futuristic and Ultimates to me.
