Hogansan ichiban.

What was Japan Hogan's deal anyway? Was he too old and body broken to keep that style going, or was it just not what put asses in seats back then? Watching that clip is some of the more impressive in-ring shit i've seen from him.... ever. |

A) Sold like that B) Did moves like that |
I mean Hogan was trained by Hiro Matsuda. He was always capable of working like that.
But he didn't have to. |
Eh, that doesn't really add anything though.
"He didn't have to". Meh. |
Different promotions have different presentations. Working is about getting the audience to respond to you. And fans of different promotions might get engaged by different things.

Matsuda would've never recommended him to WWF in the first place if he couldn't work a lick. In an alternate universe where Vince or US promotions "didn't see anything" in Hogan or whatever, dude has a next level legendary gaijin run in Japan. |
Vito's right. WWF fans just wanted to see Hogan do his poses, sell for a monster heel, Hulk up and drop the leg. He was the company's cash cow. No need to risk Hogan getting hurt doing something unnecessary.
Hogan was actually having really fun brawls up until Wrestlemania 3. Then you got formulaic Hogan. |
That's all very wank.

Most wrestling fans are not there for the wrestling. They are there for the soap opera. Big stars involved in compelling stories. Charisma and star power are way more important than in ring product.
It doesn’t matter how fast and technical the wrestling gets in AEW, they will always have about 800k fans who love that shit. While the majority, who want the stars and coherent stories, will stay away. Hogan knew how to work a crowd, no one wanted to see him put Earthquake in an arm drag toe hold. There is no money in the US in that kind of wrestling. Even someone like Kurt Angle. He was so over and such a star because of his personality and character work. Being such a good wrestler was only a small part of his overall package. Austin and Rock were as punch kicky as possible at their very peak, no one cared, and most don’t even remember the Benoit/Angle clinic on the same card at Mania 17. Big story and stars win out every single time. |
Even Hart and HBK. They were popular less so because they were such good wrestlers and more because they were both excellent story tellers. Both were so capable of investing you in their matches and making you care. They lacked the star power, but they had the story and the emotion.
It’s the same logic that tells you why Sami Zayn is the most talked about guy in wrestling right now and that fan interest peaked in AEW when they smelled a genuine story with emotion and heat brewing. Only the same 700-800k care about Elite vs Death Truangle for the 10th time. |

I like a good in-ring technician but it’s the drama that I watch for. For me there’s too many good matches nowadays if anything. |
Wrestling is at its most popular when the in ring product is at its worst.

RIP |
Seems like quite the character journey for him in TNA.... comedy character who was scared of his own pyro turns into violence worshipping cult leader who gets stabbed to death.
|
Supposedly EY is going back to WWE
|
Sigh, and just when I was about to give Impact a chance again.
|
Is the joke that nobody watches Impact so you can literally get away with murder?
|
Also laughing that the cameraman will stand by and film a murder, editors will edit it together with some slick music and effects, and producers will air it.
|
Dear Lock Jaw,
Wrestling is not real. Warm Regards, Mgmt |
But there is the element of "reality" to it.... so while I wouldn't question the camera people of Game of Thrones, I would question the camera people of rassling.
|
Sooooo good!

Johnny Rodz is in there. That's like Funaki being in for modern comparison sake. |
I know nothing about Johnny Rodz' career, but I met him in 2010 and he was so wonderful.
|
I love Johnny Rodz. He was great, but he was an opening match guy/jobber to the stars.
