And on that, a blog about what so many Aliens games get wrong.
It mirrors me and my brother's thoughts on why the marines in AvP's species deathmatch mode was shockingly fun. The other two races are far and away better than you from a gameplay perspective. All you have is a motion tracker and some source accurate firearms. But it was terrifying in the best way imaginable. The Horde Mode in AvP, which was the marines' exclusive mode, was spot on. All it was ape the trend seen in other shooters, but it was so right in an Aliens game. Like 'take Assassins Creed predatory stealth gameplay and apply to Batman' right. But alas, we have an Aliens game that doesn't hold up to the games the brand helped spawn. Like the tragic poetry of a bad Starship Troopers game. |
13 years later and I still love Timesplitters oh so much aka finally can run a PS2 emulator and got to play it for the first time in 12 years.
Edit: Now with video because I was bored and wanted to test out how well my pc could handle streaming. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/nRQSEE_YR1Q" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

I'm glad I didn't have any interest in Colonial Marines. Can't be disappointed by it.

Making a sort of Bioshocky scene in UDK right now.

Can't wait for the new Arkham game. Too bad Rocksteady isn't doing it, they did a magnificent job with the first 2. I am still playing through AC.
|
If they're not doing it I think you can stand to wait.

Yeah, Damon.
Force unleashed was the "official" inbetween story of 3 & 4. |
Daily Gaming News:
1) Bunch of next gen rumors such as EA believing neither the next Xbox nor PS4 will be backwards compatible, Xbox 360 controllers rumored to not be backwards compatible with the next Xbox, and the PS4 controller is rumored to have dropped the "share" button while still keeping the same Dualshock design. http://www.egmnow.com/articles/news/...oles-unlikely/ http://www.screwattack.com/news/rumors-about-durango http://www.egmnow.com/articles/news/...tails-surface/ 2) Naughty Dog confirms The Last of Us has been delayed with the official reason being they need more time to polish up the game. http://www.destructoid.com/naughty-d...e-244871.phtml 3) According to reports, Valve has laid off roughly 25 employees from their hardware and Android R&D divisions with the unofficial reason being related to recent changes in direction by the company. http://www.destructoid.com/valve-fir...s-244865.phtml 4) Nintendo announces a new Nintendo Direct will arrive tomorrow with the focus primarily on the 3DS. http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/02/...oming-tomorrow |
Video does a good job comparing and contrasting the vast differences between the demo and the finished product.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3z2qVebxlUo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> It's a disappointment for me, as I'm a big Alien fan - I wasn't getting my hopes up considering the developmental nightmare this title suffered, but it's still a shame so much potential was wasted. |
Christ, that 3DS Direct has to talk about already announced games, surely. That thing is in constant beast mode for Japan this year. Animal Crossing and Dragon Quest have already bumped the 3DS to above 10 million units over there and they've still got Monster Hunter 4 and Pokemon to come out over there.
hope they announce a localisation of Monster Hunter 4, but I'm not holding my breath. |
Some odd things have been coming up in the Steam database recently, like a few older games that never received PC ports as well as some that are just unexpected. For me, the biggest surprises were:
Halo's 1-3 KOF XIII, 2002 and 98 Brutal Legend Some things have been happening since then and now, Brutal Legend is on the Steam store: http://store.steampowered.com/app/22..._7_7_204_150_3 MS also announced that Halo 2's multiplayer support would be terminated on PC shortly before this was discovered. Now there's been a u-turn and they've said that Halo 2 will continue support until June 2013 while "other support options are investigated". Think I'd pick up the Halo trilogy. Think I'd have a lot more fun with a mouse and keyboard. not only that, but Halo 3's forge mode with a mouse would be a godsend. |
Won't be picking up a the next Xbox at launch if its not backwards compatible, fuck that noise.
|
I think you've got no chance of either console being BC with the massive change in architecture unless they throw additional expensive hardware in.
The best you could hope for is that Sony uses their patent for plugging in an adaptor with some PS3 hardware in it to get some BC working on the PS4 at an additional cost. |
Well then Fable 4 better look pretty fucking shiny and have that tree gimmick they skipped out of 3. And a decent game they also skipped out of 3.

Honest to fucking god this machine is on a roll. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/SWNQ-i2VIV0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Donkey Kong Returns 3D port is less hype-worthy, but still nice, also Summer 2013 along with a new 3DS Mario Golf. |
Wii Street U is out for free download, if anyone wants Google Maps on their Wii U.
|
There was some DLC announced for New Super Mario Bros U too: New Super Luigi U
|
It's apparantly a full length DLC so it's not just a couple of levels slightly rejigged and sold for £15.
|
Yeah, it showed a shot of a whole new overworld. I hope it's a little harder like some of the NSMB2 DLC apparently is. I've 100%'d the original game.
Also, Nintendo announced another 3DS Direct for next week concentrating on 3rd party Japanese games. |

I 100%'d the game too. So I'll be buying the DLC. I've only seen one sceen of a Bullet Bill stage boardered with rainbow wood.
|
Just sort of a minor question, but are the ban enforcement team on Microsoft still basically unreachable?
While the people who complain about wrongful banning are generally full of shit, I still think it's a really bad idea from a customer service perspective. |

Daily Gaming News:
1) Capcom announces Darkstalkers Resurrection will be arriving on March 12 for PSN in North America while the rest of PSN and XBLA gets the game on March 13. The game is priced at $15 (1200 MS Points). http://www.egmnow.com/articles/news/...bla-mid-march/ 2) A teaser image potentially related to Just Cause 3 was released recently by Avalanche Studios. http://www.egmnow.com/articles/news/...-just-cause-3/ 3) Hideo Kojima reveals both the Fox Engine and Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes will be shown in more details during next month's GDC expo. http://www.destructoid.com/kojima-to...3-244929.phtml |
EGM gave the new Aliens game a 9.0.
"lol" |
EGM's credibility:
"Game over, man!" |
All three reviewers?
|
Bought Half-Life on Steam for £1.75. I played HL breifly on PS2 but I can't remember anything beyond the first little while.
I'm hoping it lives up to its reputation and I'm hoping the controls aren't ridiculous with this like Esc for jump and Tab+ALT+Enter to pause or whatever. |
I had Half Life on PC when it came out and again on PS2, I'd love for Valve to put a high resolution version on the PSN sometime, to go with my Orange Box disc.
As for Aliens, it's my favourite movie ever ever, so I still want to get Colonial Marines, just not when it's at full price. I had a lot of fun playing AVP a few years ago and that game didn't get great reviews either. |
Tried the game for 30 seconds. Audio is weird. Like there is a rapid TLK-TLK-TLK noise as someone talks. Like someone is flicking through a catalogue.
Don't like the controls but I could probably customise them. |
Daily Gaming News:
1) New pre-order bonus for God of War: Accession was announced to be a Best Buy exclusive and includes both Thor's hammer (Mjölnir) and 4 characters being playable for multiplayer. http://www.egmnow.com/articles/news/...onus-revealed/ 2) Gears of War: Tactics rumored to be the next Gears game after Judgment which is teased as an RTS-type game and uses Kinect for controls. http://www.screwattack.com/news/rumo...t-has-surfaced 3) Sony could be considering making a tablet controller called the EyePad according to a recent patent from the company. According to the description for the EyePad, it could potentially be released for both the PS3 and PS4. http://www.destructoid.com/sony-eyep...s-245095.phtml |
What a great name for a tablet, it's a wonder someone else didn't come up with it first.
|
Before someone comes along and does something stupid like start bashing the name, was it actually named this anywhere in the actual patent? I can't be arsed to check.

Ah. they used it for descriptive purposes, neither applying for nor displaying it was a trademark?
Those bastards. They're going to onfuse the market by...Not releasing it under that name! |
Did a quick glance but the name starts to show up on page 5 and 6. Sony also starts to mention the EyeToy and the Eye game series more after that point than their other devices/controllers.
|
Yeah, covered that 14 minutes before you.
