I knew Rico Constantino was older when he got his start and that his age apparently worked against him in the WWE, but I didn’t appreciate it how old he was when he debuted as Billy & Chuck’s stylist. He was 40. He’s older than Billy Gunn. Hell, he’s older than Shawn Michaels.

LOVED Hakushi.

Made him in one of the early N64 wrasslin games.

Bad News Gertner 07-30-2022 01:51 PM

Those rings had zero give. Everytime I watch stuff from that era I think of that. How are they not all crippled.

Destor 07-30-2022 01:56 PM

They were incredibly stiff. First few times you get in one the next few days were hell...they were (and are) also huge. 5 steps to clear those cunts. Gotta hit the treadmill when youre working in a full sized. It makes a huge difference. To work at the pace they did in that match in a ring that size.. its impressive

Destor 07-30-2022 02:00 PM

It would still be impressive in a 16 but in a 20 more so

That's very interesting

So apparently multiple sources are reporting the WWE tryouts in Nashville were such a disaster that they will be immediately going back to scouring the indy feds for talent. A bunch of people got injured. A lot of concussions. They've deemed it too risky to keep bringing in untrained people for further auditions.

Sepholio 07-30-2022 04:46 PM

Kind of a good news/bad news thing there. Sucks a bunch of people got injured but it's great to hear they are going back to picking up people from the indies that at least have some idea of what they are actually doing.

Fignuts 07-30-2022 04:52 PM

What the fuck are they even making these people do in the tryouts that there are multiple concussions? I would think a tryout would consist of cardio and strength tests. Maybe some flat back bumps.

Mr. Nerfect 07-30-2022 04:58 PM

Yeah, I don’t know what is going on there. I don’t think going back to the indies is necessarily a good thing either. Standout talent, sure, there are lot of bad habits picked up there that kind of got carried into WWE proper.

I think they would be better off having numerous training camps and sending some talent abroad. They seem to be trialing that with Ben Buchanan & Josh Briggs, yeah? I have no clue why they haven’t worked out something with Tom Prichard’s school yet. Send talent to approved indies.

Exactly that, the flat back bumps. They don't tuck their chins and they get concussed.

Destor 07-30-2022 06:58 PM

Rings will punch you in the back of the head for sure. i doubt anyone is doing anything with another person day 1. "It aint ballet" and all that

Destor 07-30-2022 06:59 PM

Going back to the indies is about the worst thing they can do though. There's basically no talent left on the indy scene. Trying to teach people with star potential to work is a much better idea

:y:

They’re signing up freakish athletes. Some of the NXT guys are already doing spectacular things, but they can also have the mindset of someone who has competed at high levels. Teach them the fundamentals and psychology of wrestling and they’ll wash out your average indy level worker.

Destor 07-30-2022 08:35 PM

There's an issue thats unique to modern wrestling though in that there are two audiences. 1 hates the other and the other doesn't know the one that hates them exist. And they enjoy basically the opposite things. The die hard/smark VS the casual/non-fan/potential fan.

The problem is now you're searching for a Unicorn. Someone with credibility to pull eyeballs from a disinterested potential/non-viewer and who can cross the isle and get over with the die hard audience. And this gets even more difficult when that core base realizes the guy is over 10% of them will turn on him and spend every waking hour trying to turn other against him too.

I genuinely dont know how to keep a guy over in this era and there's not enough bodies to refresh this cycle every 3 years.

Fignuts 07-30-2022 08:45 PM

I think a mixture of both is the best way to go. So long as you're being selective. Pick experienced guys from outside WWE that aren't completely indyriffic and can actually work, like they did during the height of NXT.

Pick college athletes that actually take it seriously and aren't just looking at it as a stepping stone to be tv stars or whatever the fuck.

I can't see a whole roster of green rookies improving very fast if they're only facing eachother. Mix them with some more experienced indy guys who don't use a Canadian Destroyer as a transitional move, and I think you'll get better results.

XL 07-31-2022 06:36 AM

Yeah, someone here said it before (and got ridiculed for it), take talent where you can get it.

If there’s guys on the indies that you see potential in, sign them. If there’s colleague prospects/crossover athletes that you see potential in, sign them. They don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

I can see guys like Thatcher, Burch, etc being brought back in if only to work with the greener talent to get them where they need them to be.

That bothered him so much. “No shit, sherlock” statement of the year. No one is saying turn down someone amazing because they come from the indies or vice versa. Signing “good talent” is a no-brainer.

#1-norm-fan 08-01-2022 09:27 AM

Lol Oh yeah! That was the direct response after I first started calling Noid out. Monumental occasion. There’s a really weird running theme that developed at that point where after he or his underling get their bullshit exposed they jump to a different thread and try to start an odd nonsensical argument to “even the score” or something. I don’t know if it’s a tactic they’ve discussed or if it just happens to be a natural defense mechanism for their “kind”.

Hmmm. I think calling that out has made things worse: now Xrod has taken to posting memes he’s found on Reddit in 3 separate threads.

Lol so bad ass

Meng was so badass.... the thing is, I remember him mostly losing. Just the way he was and the way the commentators talked about him I always took him as a "legit threat" and was always thinking this was gonna be a tough one for whatever babyface was fighting him

Lock Jaw 08-01-2022 02:05 PM

Other random WCW memory that may or may not be real: I distinctly remember Lex Luger having endless matches with The Giant, and every match Luger would pick him up in the torture rack, and every match Schiavone would yell "He just picked up The Giant!!! No one has ever picked up The Giant before!!!!"

Lol, nice try. This guy can’t call out for pizza. He had been obsessed with xrod and myself for months before this. But this really rankled him. He went into every thread and tried to “even the score.” Guy’s projecting big time.

I still remember him fighting Goldberg for the WCW title on a nitro, I believe the one after Road Wild 98 and he had Goldberg in the Trogan Death Grip and for some reason when Goldberg was being counted, the referee stopped and then it went to the finish of Spear and Jackhammer. Think Meng might of shooted on goldberg at that time or more then likely Goldberg just botched everything.

#1-norm-fan 08-01-2022 03:21 PM

The lame “projecting” fallback. Same one he tried when I pointed out him being a cringey brown-noser.

Excellent posts on this page by XL, BTW!

I remember that match. Ref didn’t even start a count. Meng just let go as if he thought Goldberg tapped or something. It was weird. I’m sure there’s a story behind it.

Same as wwe years later, anytime big show got f5'd or fu'd by cena the commentators would be spooging over themselves like it was something new despite the fact they'd seen it numerous times before.

Lock Jaw 08-01-2022 04:37 PM

There's a difference between making it out to be impressive and literally saying it was the first time, every time.

I booked Clash at the Castle for anyone who wants to know how it should go:

SPOILER: show

* Shinsuke Nakamura wins a Great British Battle Royal over Omos, The Miz, Kevin Owens, Ezekiel, Rey Mysterio, Dominik Mysterio, Chad Gable, Otis, Damian Priest, Mustafa Ali, Shelton Benjamin, Cedric Alexander, Montez Ford, Angelo Dawkins, Madcap Moss, Happy Corbin, Angel Garza, Humberto Carrillo, Mansoor, Mace, Erik, Ivar, Jinder Mahal and Shanky. Some key spots: Mace gets into it with Omos, but is eliminated when he charges and is tossed over. This leads to Mansoor being eliminated to the biggest heat ever. Ford dumps Dawkins from behind. Madcap Moss eliminates Omos in a big spot, but Jinder Mahal then dumps him from behind. The big names at the end are Kevin Owens, The Miz, Rey Mysterio, Montez Ford and Rey Mysterio. The Miz is eliminated by Rey, Ford eliminates Rey, Nakamura then eliminates Ford & Owens to win.

* The New Day & NXT UK Champion Tyler Bate defeat The Brawling Brutes & Sami Zayn when Bate pins Zayn after a Blue Thunder Driver. The New Day add some main roster power to Bate, who gets to tangle with a career rival.

* Gunther defeats Sheamus to retain the Intercontinental Championship. These two can just beat the absolute piss out of each other. Sheamus is probably going to get a featured spot on this show.

* Charlotte Flair defeats Liv Morgan to win the SmackDown Women’s Championship. With Ronda taking some time off, Charlotte comes back to carry the show. You could have Charlotte slip on a banana peel here, but it might be time to move on from Liv.

* AJ Styles & Dolph Ziggler defeat The Usos for the WWE Tag Team Championship. What a tag match this would be. You could have The Usos retain, but I would like the switch here. I’d make a deal out of Styles winning his second WWE Title in the UK and try to pass him off as a guy that matters over there.

* Bobby Lashley defeats Ciampa for the United States Championship. Doesn’t really matter who wins here. There are options for both guys coming out of it. You could do something funky like have Miz throw the towel in for Ciampa, jealous that Ciampa is overtaking him.

* Dakota Kai & Iyo Sky defeat Sasha Banks & Naomi and Alexa Bliss & Asuka to win the Women’s Tag Team Championship. Triple H can probably work out something with Sasha & Naomi before the show. It makes sense for them to eat lumps here as long as there is a plan moving forward. The heel faction walking out with gold makes sense.

* Matt Riddle defeats Seth Rollins and also gets his name back. Should be a great match.

* Finn Balor defeats Edge, because Edge seems to really want to work with him and has been protected so a win for Balor here can be passed off as a big deal.

* Bayley defeats Bianca Belair to win the Raw Women’s Championship. I thought about doing a six-woman tag, but I think this story is big enough to warrant the multiple slots.

* Drew McIntyre defeats Roman Reigns in the main event to win the WWE Universal Championship with Tyson Fury as the special enforcer. I see them switching the belts in the UK. I feel less confident of that as we get closer and closer and Roman seems like more and more of a deal that Drew is not, but I don’t think they’ll beat Drew. I think they’ll try and use this to get him back up there. This could have interference from The Usos, Theory, Ziggler, Styles, Rollins & Riddle and be a huge mess. But hey, that also sets up Survivor Series (which would be ages off though).
