I did go on a bit of a Shinjiro Otani kick tonight, to try and spin this horrible stupidity into something positive. Great fucking worker.

Saw a match between him and Tajiri from the Best of the Super Juniors 1997. The way the match (and looking into it, the tournament) was booked was the perfect way to present Otani like a star and the guy to beat. Within 4 minutes, Otani has established himself as this dominating veteran over Tajiri. Then he gives some of that rug back. It all leads to Tajiri actually catching him and playing spoiler (think it cost Otani the tournament).

Just great storytelling. You don’t always get that from the modern juniors.

I think that was a pretty common scam at one time. Not 75% but I know of other scummy wrestling trainers in the 90s who would try to get people to agree to signing over a percentage of all future earnings. Roland Alexander was known for that.
