I thought it was really good, but I was willing to set aside the cliches. It is very cliche.

But the powerhouse performance by Farrell is worth the price of admission, to me.

House is a new horror film written by Frank Peretti and some other guy. I usually really enjoy their work, but this movie was a bit off the wall. Some parts were kind of scary, but by the end a lot felt like it was missing.

My Winnipeg 9/10 - Surreal docu-drama by avant garde filmmaker Guy Maddin. I suppose it's about himself trying to escape his city and the only way he can do that is by filming his way out. So the film works as part autobiography and part history of the city.

Rocket Science: 6/10

I heard so many good things about this movie and I was pretty disappointed when the credits finally rolled. I liked the girl who played Ginny, but the protagonist and his constant stutter got more than a little bit annoying after the second act. I kind of felt like they were just packing in off-beat, weird characters with no purpose other than to include off-beat, weird characters. They didn't play that big of a role in the movie and the laughs they garnered from me were few and far between. I loved the cinematography and the music though, and this perverted geeky kid who lives across from the female antagonist made it watchable, but not re-watchable.

New Avengers - 7/10

A fun animated adventure that sees the children of the Avengers take on their parent's killer and bringer of world subjugation, Ultron. In many ways the Marvel version of Teen Titans without the quasi-anime style. It would certainly merit a TV series should they continue this story. I also kept finding myself trying to tie this with the Ultimate Avengers movie that came before; though no clear evidence is present, its not impossible to think of it that way. The plot is Cartoon Network ho-hum 'kid-power', but fairly straight forward. I enjoyed it overall.

Resident Evil: Extinction - 4/10

Spoilers Ahead: Fucking stupid. You just know they're in trouble when they force down bits from the first (and best) RE film just for a pathetic attempt at continuity. Sorry, doesn't work. RE:E's setting is too far gone from what the first two established. I didn't like RE:A because it followed the game too closely, and in this third installment the movie series abandons game continuity. I'd think that would be a good thing, but now I feel they should have used some game plots. This movie does not know what to do with itself. There are scenes totally disconnected with the rest of the film. It was more like a series of short films; I expect titles saying "Episode One: Alice vs Hillbillies", and "Episode Two: Alice Dreams of Crap". Seriously, the first 5 minutes was utterly useless. Then when an actual plot gets going, you don't care (see how important the five minute rule is?). Characters are killed off seemingly for no reason other than to force an eventual reboot of the series, and Alice's character enters some pseudo Jean Grey-Phoenix level of presentation that I cannot follow as a sympathizer. Oh yeah, her blood was the cure for the T-Virus all along. Paul Anderson, thank you for Mortal Kombat, now stop writing.

Seriously, I saw this in theatres and thought it was horrible. Just watched it again today, rented it, thought it was even worse. After the blowup scene in the beginning, it gets extremely boring. didnt RDJ sign on for something like 3 films? they have to do the backstory and character build up. i felt that there could have been more action too but i assumed there would be plenty in the second and third plus future Avenger movie tie-ins.

Schindler's List 10/10

Kris P Lettus 11-17-2008 11:55 AM

You guys are fucking loony toons..

Hell Boy 2 was amazing.. The whole Troll Market shit, alot more of the mystical creatures underworld, etc.. Plus some of the monsters looked alot more like they did in the comic then Guillermo's monsters.. Specially the giant plant creature..

Indiana Jones 4 was entertaining but was shot more like a Disney movie.. All the lighting was blasted out (which I'm sure the did in post) and didn't look natural at all.. The first three the lighten was subtle and natural, not blasted out like a comic book.. Even some of the action sequences looked like they were from Small Soldiers, not Indiana Jones (e.g. the first motorcycle chase).. It came across as cheesy and forced.. Not even near the same level as the first ones and is def like The Phantom Menace of the whole series..

What did y'all not like in HB2??

Jeritron 11-17-2008 11:59 AM

I did like Hellboy 2. Also, the lighting doesn't make Indy4 a bad movie. What the fuck kind of criteria is that?
The motorcycle chase not from Indian Jones?! That's pure Indy, as a scene and visually

I refuse to get into the Indy debate.

Hellboy 2 was great but lets not blast shit unfairly. Hellboy 2 had shitty lighting and effects all over the place. Didn't make it a bad movie

Kris P Lettus 11-17-2008 12:10 PM

The cinematography has alot to do with weather I enjoy a movie or not.. Here it looked more like a cartoon or comic book.. My job, as a motion picture electrician, is to completely light a scene so we can control it no matter what the sun/preexisting lights are doing.. This give the production control over time due to not having restraints on time of day.. While doing that, we try to make all lighting as natural as possible.. Just like every other crew on a movie.. You don't want the wardrobe, special effects, makeup, sets, etc etc etc to look fake, why would you want your lighting to look fake?? It was blasted out and overexposed to give it a cartoony feel, which took away from the griity, Joe Blow feel of what makes Indy great IMO.. You can say the lighting and effects were bad in HB2 all you want, but you are wrong.. Hell Boy is based off a comic book about mythical creatures and demons from Hell.. It's supposed to look surreal..

That's like compairing the cinematography of Reservoir Dogs and 300.. They have two completely different looks based on subject matter.. To say the lightening and cinematography isn't criteria to base the quality of the movie is insane..

Fox 11-17-2008 12:15 PM

I disagree with you, KPL. The lighting certainly was not as gritty as the first three indys, but really, what did you expect? Most Hollywood movies these days are given that slick, pretty look in post, especially with Spielberg. While it wasn't the same as the first 3 movies, it wasn't enough to pull me out of the picture. The warehouse scene was especially well lit.

Of all the things that made Indy 4 a piece of shit, the lighting is pretty low on the list, IMO. I'd say the piss poor dialogue, lack of a gripping storyline, personal hatred for Shia, aliens, CG monkeys and CG ants are quite a bit higher.

Jeritron 11-17-2008 12:16 PM

You're blowing this out of whack bigtime. You act as though it looked like Spy Kids start to finish. There were a few questionable shots with the compositiong.
And the cinematography was excellent

Madagascar 2: 6/10

Enjoyable, wacky fun. Those meerkats are hilarious.

Jeritron 11-17-2008 12:20 PM

I didn't say it wasn't cireteria. Its just not a proper criteria to say this particular movie sucked. Thats insane. Because there were a few questionalbe sequences it sucked? The problem is that you're makign it seem as though it's that drastically different.
The lighting isn't all to different.
The complaint you may be having is the composite work. In the jungle and Area 51 (outdoors). That's not lighting. It's shitty greenscreen work, which Raiders had a bit of, as well as the others

Jeritron 11-17-2008 12:20 PM

Any of the shots in Indy 4 that weren't involving effects were lit exactly like those of the previous films

It's a low budget 1984 picture that is shot almost entirely with existing lighting. It heavily mixes color temperatures (mainly because they had no choice) and has a very distinct look to it.

It's debated whether the lighting adds to the picture or detracts from it, and I was just curious as to your take.

Jeritron 11-17-2008 12:25 PM

The gripe I have with Indy criticisms is when it's faulted for things present, or in some cases more present, in the originals. It's by no means a terrible movie either and people's nostalgia influenced view of them drive me nuts. I reccomend checking them out again sometime and noticing how similar they really are, and how shaky visual aspects are in those as well.

We're not going to get anywhere arguing

I'll check it out.. All lighting doesn't have to be natural.. Look at Sin City or 300.. I loved both those movies and they didn't look natural at all.. The Hellboy movies also (any Guillermo Del Torro movies for that matter).. But it can def take away from the feel of a movie just as much as it can add to it.. Lighting can add mood and tone, when done right.. In this case, it took away from the gritty, organic feel of what made the first 3 amazing.. I look at it like Michael Scott's assessment of the Die Hard movies..

Quote:

Michael: You know what, here's the thing about Die Hard 4. Die Hard one, the original, John McClane was just this normal guy. You know, he's just a normal New York City cop, who gets his feet cut, and gets beat up. But he's an everyday guy. In Die Hard 4, he is jumping a motorcycle into a helicopter. In air. You know? He's invincible. It just sort of lost what Die Hard was. It's not Terminator.
It took away from what it was, IMO.. Also, the super cheesy parts didn't help either..

Triple A 11-17-2008 05:13 PM

Indiana Jones 4 was fucking awful, imo. But I had no interest in it whatsoever going in anyway. It met my expectations. I mean I guess it was OK for what it was and for its target audience but I did not like it at all and wanted to stop watching it a lot of times.

mitch_h 11-17-2008 08:07 PM

Starman - Don't really know why I watched this, I like Carpenter but this movie never really appealed to me. That being said it was actually pretty "fun" and Bridges was great. Kinda reminded me of ET... if ET had taken on the form of a human and impregnated Elliott before going home. 7/10

Brand Upon the Brain! - Maddin makes David Lynch look like Ron Howard. - 8/10

Paris, Texas - Harry Dean Stanton plays a guy who is found by his brother after walking around the desert for 4 years. It was excellent. 9/10

Reasonable

Jeritron 11-17-2008 10:04 PM

I think the problem in a lot of ways is that people were 8 when they saw the originals, and the rest of society was new to it. Now, they're older and jaded and society has let their view of that shit grow over 20 years.
That's why Indy4 gets blasted for being stupid, or dragging, or something like that when the originals had many of the same problems. Plus, movies like it come out all the time and go over well (the first Pirates, Hellboy 2, etc.) even if they have the same problems and are even inferior.

Haven't seen anything new, just wanted to say that.

Last movie I saw (but I've seen many times):

Die Hard - 10/10

One of my favorite movies ever. At this moment.

W - 4/10. pretty bad. it's pretty boring to still beat up on dubya after 8 years and it basically turns him into the underachiever looking for daddy's love with terrible nightmare sequences, and evil plotting secret meetings where america invade iran and RULE THE WORLD. it is your 14 year old liberals wet dream of a film.
