As many of you probably knew, HBO was planning to do a Game of Thrones prequel set in the during the Age of Heroes with a temporary title called "The Longest Night". Naomi Watts had top billing and the pilot was filmed.

That has now been scrapped.

Instead, they're going a different direction and doing a prequel based on the Targaryens. House of the Dragon is this new show.

Didn't even finish GOT. Skipped last season, cause I lost interest when they turned Jon Snow superhero.

When the MCU stuff launches. Not signing up to yet another stream service just for Mandalorian (excited as I am about it).

Just as well. Much like with *anything* at launch anymore, it could use improvements. For example, for some odd reason, I watched the season 2 finale of Ducktales reboot (I had seen the rest via other means, since I could never get Disney GO to work), and after I was done, they appear to have reshuffled/renumbered the episode order. This wouldn't be so much of an issue if the 2017 series weren't semi-serialized; most of the episodes stand alone, but actually take place in chronological order, with callbacks to things that happened previously. Season enders wrap up a whole background arc. It's one thing when Fox did this with Firefly. It's another with Disney screwing their own property.

There's also stuff that has a thumbnail, but not up yet, and occasionally flat out won't run (with an error message).

Being fair about it, though, I just rolled with the $13 bundle. The minute they decide that they're leaving too much money on the table and charge "full price" for Disney, ESPN, and Hulu separately, I'm out.

Besides Mandalorian and the aforementioned Ducktales eps, I've also got my fix of 90's X-Men and 1981 Spider-Man (pre "Amazing Friends", though that's there too). I needed to hear the classic Dr. Doom voice somewhere other than an MF DOOM album.

Kalyx triaD 11-18-2019 12:33 AM

Somebody I know is sharing Disney+ with me and The Mandalorian is indeed worth the entire price.

Seanny One Ball 11-18-2019 01:19 AM

I don't even like Star Wars and I'm tempted.

Disney now working on a "Live Action" Robin Hood (the cartoon one with the animals) remake......

Black Widow 04-10-2020 05:03 PM

Fuck Disney!!

None of these live action remakes have been any good.

Lock Jaw 04-10-2020 05:26 PM

I enjoyed The Jungle Book.... though I admit to not having much of a connection to the old animated version via not watching it a lot, so maybe that helped.....

Someone new will be re-cast for season 2.

Zack Synder Cut of Justice League coming to HBO Max in 2021 if we all live that long

Lock Jaw 05-20-2020 02:37 PM

Why do I get the feeling that after all is said and done, it will just end in people going "Oh. ...... oh yeah. We don't like Zack Snyder"

Seanny One Ball 05-20-2020 02:48 PM

Likely because you're too smart to fall for it and you already know that the good parts of that movie came from Joss Whedon's labyrinthine brain.

Kalyx triaD 05-22-2020 10:14 AM

Good parts?

Seanny One Ball 05-22-2020 01:26 PM

Oh come on, there was some good humour in there from The Flash.
It was like Flash was watching the same film as I was and he fucking hated it.

Kalyx triaD 05-22-2020 08:22 PM

Found the Flash's lines kinda dissonant. Aquaman's humour was better fit.

Seanny One Ball 05-22-2020 09:34 PM

100% bad then?

Kalyx triaD 05-23-2020 09:51 PM

Apparently they won't recast Kate Kane, and Batwoman will be a "new character" named Ryan Wilder.

Seems "dumb" to have a Batwoman show and NOT have it be about Kate Kane.

Kalyx triaD 06-03-2020 11:14 AM

The DC universe in a meta, brand wide way treats their heroes as symbols meant to exist above and beyond whoever is wearing the sigil at the time. So somebody else being Batwoman works in a 'DC' way, and is also future proof in the event Rose changes her mind.

ClockShot 06-12-2020 05:12 PM

Seeing this Artemis Fowl movie banner everywhere I click today. Disney trying for a long time now to get that released.

But, I guess it's the worst movie of the year so far with all the reviews I'm hearing.

Dexter (96, 316)
Supernatural (321, 315)
Parks and Recreation (121, 304)

A decline even more rapid than The Office, and sadly a longer duration.

Wonder if they're going to somehow reference the "Belmont thought bubble" when Maria runs into Alucard while looking for him where, when she mentions "Belmont", Trevor's sprite set shows up in her bubble, and when Drac Jr's bubble pops up, its NES Trevor?

Me explaining that took far longer than it would prob'ly appear onscreen if they did.

The movie theater 5 minutes up the highway from closed it's doors. The lease ran out. And with few people going these days and others going the streaming route, add in the fact that there's nothing good out there these days, I can understand it. Landlord of the property I guess is putting feelers out to other theater chains to see if anyone wants the place.

That. And the fact that the place was falling apart. I'd figure during the pandemic when things were shut down they'd put up some cash for a construction crew and do a nice renovation/remodel. Nope.

Next closest place is a small 2-screen independent place where if you blink, you'll probably miss the movie you want to see. Only have films for a week or two then move on to something else.

It sucks because I can always count on the movie theater as a place to escape and relax for a couple hours. I guess now staying at home with the small screen and microwave popcorn is the new normal.

Destor 10-10-2022 08:37 PM

You can get a pretty decent setup for a fairly decent cost, IMO. I just recently got a Dolby Atmos capable surround sound system ($300-$400 can't remember) and it has changed EVERYTHING.

Cinema, as in the theater itself, will face this "old model" issue soon enough. Smaller character-driven films already have no ability to generate revenue in the theater model; their only way to get made these days is long-form narratives.

The death of the DVD market means films have to recoup their budget costs in the theater run and hope to turn profit through digital distribution rights. It completely collapsed a huge revenue stream leaving just blockbusters standing and the number of failures there is concerning as well.

With fewer movies being made this means fewer tickets annually being sold. The death of the theater isn't far away.

Point is the old model of tv and film doesn't work anymore and the market will adjust accordingly.

I seriously wonder if there will ever be a "successful" sitcom ever again.... feel like the last "cycle" of sitcoms will be the last of the "traditional network sitcom".....

Destor 11-15-2022 11:26 PM

Unsure. Network sitcom? Those are dead. But a 3 cam sitcom can totally work streaming. Seinfeld and Friends are wildly popular on streaming sites

Lock Jaw 11-15-2022 11:34 PM

Yeah, network sitcom. Sitcoms can still work on streaming, but won't be quite "the same". Feel like the most successful sitcoms got over via syndication... just turning on the TV and it being like always on. There will no doubt be successful ones but feel like they won't be as "culturally pervasive" in that "everyone" is watching them.

Destor 11-15-2022 11:51 PM

Syndication was def a big player and you do highlight a great point. The loss of traditional tv brings a loss of this shared culture. Everyone in the country watching I Love Lucy at the exact same time meant that, literally, when the commercial breaks came on the water reservoirs dipped because the entire country went to the bathroom at the same time. The next day at work everyone had a shared experience to talk about and bond over at work.

Ive thought that a solution could be a "airing now" section. In the vien of netflix's "choose something for me" except its a "channel" on netflix with a dedicated schedule showing things to everyone at the same time.

They could premire things through it with on demand happening the next day/week but if you wanted to see it first you have to watch it "live."

Lock Jaw 11-16-2022 12:04 AM

I think the closest we will get is what Disney+ is doing, just doing the weekly release. I'm sure they'll get a sitcom on there eventually.... but even if they do, most people aren't going to be re-watching episodes, there is just too much content out there. So the "pervasiveness" will still be a lot less.

Lock Jaw 11-16-2022 12:06 AM

Damn.... now I'm getting nostalgic for the "good old days of TV" when I would get home from school, turn on the TV and enjoy a programming block of cartoons or sitcoms or whatever....

Even nostalgic for commercials...

ha! I religiously watched the local Fox channel here when I'd get home from school.

Remember watching power rangers and actually getting through the contest line. They picked up and said "WHAT TIME IS IT?!" and wanted "It's Morphin time!" as the response. Instead, I looked at the nearest clock and told them the time, multiple times, before being told to try again.

I got through a 2nd time and freakin won after I realized what a dumbass I was. Sweet prize package too.

The Power Rangers VHS (new at the time)
White Ranger action figure

that's what i remember, but there was a TON more.

Need Lock Jaw's thoughts on Graggle Simpson.

Seems weird

Reports say that Warner Bros Discovery is seriously considering rebooting the Harry Potter franchise, starting back at the first book again.

I guess it has been more than a decade since the last one wrapped up.... but it would be super awkward rebooting them. Not like it is a superhero story where they can pick and choose elements and make their own take and their own story.... it would just be the same story with new actors.

The only way I could see it working is a reboot not as a film series but an HBO Max show where they go into deeper detail every school year... can even pad it out with original stuff too...
