Setting aside the irrelevant comparison to AEW…

You don’t book a 100,000 seater stadium in the hope that you fill it 2/3s full. That’s just basic business sense and optics. This is a company that inflate their attendance regardless of how good it is. Now, they could claim a bomb scare and move to a smaller venue…

There’s a lot to this beyond the product being flat (it is). They’d have booked the venue 3 years ago (I think), didn’t they have to shuffle things around due to covid? Wasn’t 37 supposed to be in Texas? Mania benefits from an international audience which will still be impacted by official restrictions on travel and/or a malaise to international travel - there’s a group of people that don’t fancy the hassle or sitting in a tube of other people’s breath.

There will also be a contingent of people just waiting; what does travel look like? What are infection levels? What’s the card(s) going to look like? Is Austin Theory going to main event?

Some people will point to trying to get Austin on the card as a desperation move, I think it’s most likely been in the works for a while; they’re not just going to give Austin 2 months to get ready after 20 years out of the ring.

Austin’s likely been prepping for a return since about 2018 — when the giant TV and Saudi deals were announced. It doesn’t mean it was necessarily a given, but that’s when you saw Austin take a bump for Becky Lynch in that thing they did together.

WWE are just going to add the two nights together and call it a new WrestleMania record.

Evil Vito 02-16-2022 10:00 AM

NXT Takeover Stand & Deliver booked for Saturday morning the day of WrestleMania, 11 AM local start time/12 PM Eastern.

So that's a 2.5-3 hour show, a couple hour break in between to eat/recover/get to the stadium and then Mania.

I'd say this will hurt the indies running on Saturday but Mania's attendance capacity is way higher than Takeover's, probably still gonna be a lot of people opting to do indy shows ahead of Mania.

Bad News Gertner 02-16-2022 10:06 AM

So what's this new NXT Level Up show? Is it a show for wrestlers not ready for the main NXT show? If so, that's a great idea and long overdue.

Fignuts 02-16-2022 11:09 AM

It's kind of redundant. The whole point of NXT 2.0 was to turn it back into a development promotion for people not ready for the main roster. As a result the majority of the roster is green as grass.

Not sure why you need a show with people who are even more green then that.

Mr. Nerfect 02-16-2022 02:18 PM

I’m interested to see how NXT 2.0 does if/when some of their top acts cross over onto the main roster. A big disconnect and obstacle for NXT in the past was the lack of consistency between presentations.

Episode one was filmed before this week’s NXT. Featured Harland, Ivy Nile, Edris Enofe, Kushida and a few lesser know names. McGuiness on commentary.

I've always thought one show would be a "finishing school". Something you graduate to before the main roster. And you have your other show with freshly trained wrestlers, mixed in with established vets. Scott 2 Hotty would have been perfect for this. Someone who's been around but can still go. Gangrel would be another guy I'd pick. Brian Kendrick before he went all Nazi. Or wrestlers who aren't being used on the main roster/working back from injury.

Fignuts 02-16-2022 11:42 PM

The only benefit I can see is if you have guys as bad as the power plant wrestlers. I would watch every episode.

Rightfully so. I still think Meltzer is the most reliable news source out there, but my respect for him as a critic left the building quite a while ago.

Bad News Gertner 02-17-2022 09:22 AM

Like what was Dave thinking? This was only going to go one way

Ol Dirty Dastard 02-17-2022 09:32 AM

Yeah and I don’t think Dave’s hard on for Kenny helps Kenny at all. At this point, if I were Omega, I’d ask Dave to just stfu about me.
That shit was just pathetic.

WWE have released Spanish announcer Carlos Cabrera after 29 years with the company.

I think Meltzer’s lost a lot of his sources. I’ve defended his reporting in the past, but it has lost of a lot of its meat since AEW has come around. I think his clear bias towards AEW has shut a few WWE doors (because who wants to break their necks for a guy who is going to overlook everything they do?) and AEW treats him as too much of a fan. He seems to discover stuff in real time like everyone else.

His criticism is just ridiculous at this point. And he’ll go to these weird places to defend things that even the most ardent AEW supporter will roll their eyes at. Just a random example: Comparing Marko Stunt to Rey Mysterio because they are both small, comparing Kenny Omega to Harley Race because they both did “too much” or comparing Will Ospreay to Terry Funk because he thinks they’re both great heels.

Honestly, I think it might have something to do with the Omega/Ospreay stuff. Omega seemed to get his feelings legitimately ruffled by Ospreay’s praise. It could have been a “I still love you” move from Dave.

Either that or he is just looking for the Cornette boost or he has actually lost his mind. The way Cornette spoke about him having a a breakdown sounded like it was supposed to skin, as opposed to just being an abstract criticism of the guy, and that’s the first time I noticed Corny do that.
