Giving Impact a chance again. Been okay so far. Production value and set looks better than before. I actually like the look of the set at least.

Just Josh Matthews commentating is a little rough, and sweet jesus how many fucking factions are there in this company now?

Dark One 05-09-2015 12:35 AM

Spoiler tagging this since it's one of the returns on Impact, but, I need to make this joke:

WHAT'S THE VIGILANTE VELVET SKY DOING IN THE IMPACT ZONE?

Dark One 05-09-2015 12:46 AM

I've always liked Eric Young, but he looks like a Daniel Bryan impersonator raided Bret Hart's closet right now.

Dark One 05-09-2015 01:03 AM

Impact Main Event thoughts:

SPOILER: show
Of course a TNA Championship match would feature the following things:

1) One of the competitors hitting a low blow on the guest referee from behind to let people interfere... despite the fact that he was clearly the only one in the ring. This did not result in a DQ.

2) A one legged guy coming to the defense of the world champion, an olympic gold medalist.

3) Two semi-unrelated factions interfering and brawling out of the match. If you're keeping track, this means no less than 7 people interfered in the match to some extent.

Surprisingly, a clean finish despite all the clusterfuckery, so at least there's that.

Not a terrible show. Better than most of what I'd seen since the move to Destination America, but it definitely has more than a little bit of the issues that have pretty much plagued TNA for a decade now.

I'm not going to go out of my way to watch it, but I'll probably check it out again if I happen to be home and not watching anything else.

And now it's being followed by a show with a bunch of thick-accented ghost hunters from Tennessee. And they've been avertising "ALL NEW HILLBILLY BLOOD TOMORROW 9/8c" above their logo all night. Strong company TNA's keeping.

Amazing spoiler from next week's Impact, which again is so TNA it hurts.

SPOILER: show
*Hardcore War: Team Young (Eric Young, Low Ki, Kenny King, Bram, and MVP) defeated Team Angle (Kurt Angle, Chris Melendez, Mica, Drew Galloway, and Lashley) when Young hit a piledriver on Melendez. After the match, Young pulled off Melendez’ leg and tried to hit him with it. Angle stopped him, but Young hit Angle and put him in the camel clutch and choked him with the leg.

Well shit, now I have to watch next week.

Not the worst idea, really.

Quote:

Former WWE writer Kevin Eck has published a new blog over at KevinEckWrestling.com, and below are some excerpts on original WWE plans for the Lord Tensai character. For those unaware, Lord Tensai was played by current WWE NXT head trainer Matt Bloom, aka Jason Albert.

“When Bloom returned to WWE a few years ago, the intention was to make him a main-event-level monster heel, and the creative team was assigned to come up with a character for him. Among the pitches for Bloom were for him to be a masked mauler, an ex-prisoner in an orange jumpsuit and an American samurai.

I was of the belief that the best option was to give him a cool-looking mask with black ring attire that showed the tattoos on his upper body but covered his ample midsection. The more we hide his identity, I thought, the less chance the crowd will be chanting ‘Albert’ at him.

I also thought he needed a mouthpiece, and my suggestion was to hire James Mitchell as his manager. The samurai character was my least favorite. Of course, that’s the one we went with. And instead of a manager, he was given a follower who never spoke English named Sakamoto.”
According to him, the original plan was for Cena vs Tensai to be the main event of Summerslam that year which he thought had no chance the moment Tensai debuted. Was right in his assumption that Tensai would get over way more as a joke character than a serious one.

Quote:

When the creative team was shown clips of Rusev matches and promos from NXT so that we could start working on ideas for him when he was called up to the main roster, I and several other members of the team burst out laughing.

With his loincloth-type ring attire, over-the-top facial expressions, wild hair and primal screams, the guy was unintentionally hilarious. This was a heel character straight out of the 1970's that would never work today, I thought.

We started coming up with pitches for him as a comedy act, but we were told that Triple H envisioned Rusev as a monster heel so we had better forget about the character being played for laughs ...

It turned out that some people above my pay grade saw some of the same flaws with Rusev's presentation that I and others on the creative team did. Before Rusev made his WWE debut, his ring attire was changed and he was instructed to tone down the facial expressions and screaming and to wet his hair so that it didn't look look so wild.

While the changes were for the better, I remained steadfast in my opinion that Rusev would never get over to the level that Triple H was expecting.

During that time, Vince McMahon also questioned whether Lana should remain part of the act or if Rusev was better off going it alone. I didn't think Rusev had a great chance of being a success even with Lana by his side, but without her he had zero chance.

Fortunately, McMahon decided to keep Lana with Rusev, and it wasn't long before "The Ravishing Russian" became one of McMahon's favorite characters (go figure).

Just like Tensai, Rusev was given a huge push from the start with the intention of having him work on top against Cena. The plan was for Rusev to be Cena's opponent at WrestleMania.

After Rusev began appearing regularly on Raw and SmackDown, I still wasn't sold on him making it as a top guy, but it did become apparent that my initial thought that he would suffer the same fate as Tensai was wrong.

Before long, I realized that Rusev was everything that Triple H thought he would be.
Same former WWE writer from the Tensai article above.

This guy is right Rusev is trash and always will be.

Disagree. Rusev's Russian gimmick is pretty bad IMO, but he's a pretty damn good worker. If they'd get rid of all the Russian crap and just make him a badass destroyer he'd be even better.

Of course his current gimmick has had the benefit of getting him over as a heel very quickly. Not sure how it happened since I was sure this gimmick would be shit on, but hey, it worker. Hopefully once he inevitably splits from Lana he'll slowly start to lose all the Russian stuff.

WWE officials were hoping to get Daniel Bryan back in the ring this month and have him defend the Intercontinental Title against King Barrett this Sunday at the Payback pay-per-view but as noted, they got MRI results back on May 8th and it was determined that Bryan would not be able to return any time soon, if ever again.

The situation has brought a lot of frustration within WWE. WWE officials want what's best for Bryan but they obviously want him working for the company and want him on TV as they have a DVD and other products coming out that need to be promoted. There has been some talk that Bryan is now so injury-prone that maybe they could best use him in a non-wrestling position.

Since Monday's RAW where he dropped the Intercontinental Title, the talk has been that Bryan is trying to figure out a way to get cleared. There's been no word yet if Bryan will be getting the surgery that he was so reluctant to get before but people are wondering if that's an option. Needless to say, a lot of people in the company really feel bad for Bryan right now.

We heard some rumors last week but The Wrestling Observer confirms that NXT has dropped the Shoot Nation Stable. However, they will be keeping Sawyer Fulton and Angelo Dawkins together as a tag team without the Shoot Nation label. No word yet on what they will do with stable head Chad Gable.

  • Lot of ROH talk in the book, but mostly just listing and describing matches. Almost no talk of backstage politics or anything juicy.
  • Was only vegan for about 3 years. He had to stop due to soy intolerance.
  • NXT was almost totally unscripted for the rookies. All their reactions were genuine.
  • Bryan loved working in England, and would've stayed if he'd gotten paid better
  • Wrote 1 sentence about Punk leaving
  • Vince hated the jacket Bryan wore before his street fight with Punk. He screamed at the ref over the headset to make him take it off and never wear it again
  • Found out about his 18 second match from Jericho, who was snooping around the producers timesheets
  • First time he and Brie tried to have sex, they were interrupted by a drunken Sheamus and Ted Dibiase, who jumped on the bed after letting themselves into Bryan's unlocked hotel room
  • Book ends right after WMXXX
  • Throughout the book Bryan talks about the many MANY injuries he's had, how he has lied to doctors, and constantly returned too soon

Some highlights from Daniel Bryan's new book.

Actor Skylar Astin was on Brendan Schaub’s podcast and talked about going to UFC 184 (Ronda Rousey vs. Cat Zingano) and sitting in the owners section and his brother went up to Lesnar and said, “Dude, you gotta come back, man. You gotta come back.” Lesnar looked at Astin’s brother and said, “Sit the f*** down. You don’t know shit. What the f***.” Lesnar’s demeanor came off like he was furious. Astin said his brother’s girlfriend started crying and that Urijah Faber and T.J. Dillashaw, who were both there, just froze. Dillashaw then told Milan Astin, “Dude, he’s going to push your shit. You’re f***ed.” His girlfriend started crying again, thinking Lesnar would really do something

Zack Ryder hasn't evolved his character in like four years though. The best thing he ever did with it was at the start with his ECW Title match with Christian too. A heel turn with Ryder sucking up to The Authority would probably be the best thing for Ryder at the moment.

Really like the name plates on the side with the reigns of past champs. Makes it feel like the Stanley Cup of titles with that feature.
