I think Christian is probably my favorite Orton opponent ever. It’d be a shame if we never got to see them work again.

Lesnar tapping out to Benoit at Survivor Series in 03 was kind of a big deal. Tons of "you tapped out" chants on the following shows

I mean, it gets the point across and is more believable than most of the "cool moves" we see.

I think my favorite spot from the Belfast Brawl was when he threw a trash can into the ring, and it hit JBL in the head. To this day, I still don't know if it was a botch or if Finlay just has good aim.

I hope he gets it. Such an underutilized talent and genuinely good guy whose real life backstory seemed like a no-brainer to use but they never did.

Have you ever tried mindfulness? 😅

Guy hasn’t been able to catch a break since Kofi got his ‘push’ - he comes up with a new idea lately and it gets dropped straight away , so you can see his annoyance. Supposedly Vince had another idea, which was probably let’s get guys in balaclavas carry you to the ring and pretend you are the reincarnation of Muhammad Hassan. Get Daviari involved too.

I still can't get over Meltzer being stupid enough to make a holocaust joke. Didn't he give Cornette shit for the fried chicken thing several years ago?

Damian Rey 2.0 01-17-2022 12:02 AM

Idk how Ali and all I really know is he was supposed to win money in the bank and Lesnar won and he was randomly turned heel as the leader of retribution and they were already a jobber group by then.

If you’re not happy with what you’re doing for work, and you can leave, then leave. Good for him. Curious what he’s trying to do today he can’t in WWE.

GD 01-17-2022 12:08 AM

I hope WWE grants his release and not make him sit out the length of his contract.

Meltzer has a history of making tasteless comments. While not as dire as the holocaust joke, I vaguely remember him commenting on female performers getting cosmetic surgeries.

It's true. We've become overtly sensitive as a society and are constantly denouncing any and everyone. It's a tasteless joke but it's not the end of the world.

Not several. Just a couple. And to me, that hypocrisy was the real punchline.

At least with the cosmetic surgery thing, he was trying to make a point about the trend that female talent was clearly and obviously taking for getting fake tits and botox and their faces pulled taut en masse (and with some varying degrees of shitty results) because, somehow, the consensus was they seemed to think, for some reason, weren't pretty enough already. And the allusion of that reason was that higher ups in various companies, especially WWE, seemed to be steering their ladies in such a direction directly or indirectly. Hell, you had what ended up becoming one of - if not THE - top female talent in the biz at one time, and she was self-conscious about her tummy... when she had amazing (and I daresay yummy) abs, by the way. If someone has body issues about one of their best features, I'm pretty sure some of that had to be fostered by the environment. Especially when that environment had a conga line of ladies taking time off to get chesticle implants, but having "heat" with the company for announcing stuff like getting pregnant or announcing engagements/getting married (which means they can't be marketed as "hot single women in your area").

However, HOW he said it was clumsy, and left the impression that he was just bashing the women themselves. Then when he got yelled at by some of the wrestlers, he tried to backtrack and apologize, and was yet another statement that, had ANYONE ELSE tried to say what he said, even if they made the point clearer, he would have be the first to chastise them about how "tasteless" it was, and announce that they should have known better than to say such things publicly, and possibly even write an obituary about their career.

More on Ali's release request:

Quote:

In an update from Fightful, inquiries were made about Ali’s WWE status since he has been absent from WWE in recent weeks. It was noted that Ali asked for only one show off for paternity leave despite not being featured on WWE programming since November 2021. It led people within the company to believe that his paternity leave was being extended, however, a lot of other reasons reportedly led to this extended absence.

Though he has been available to return since the first week of December 2021 and there was a vignette filmed for a Mustafa Ali “New America” gimmick, Ali hasn’t been pitched anything new to portray. The “New America” idea was apparently scrapped because the higher-ups in the company changed their minds about how successful it would be.

Vince McMahon wanted “something Mustafa Ali would never have done” instead of what was being pursued for Ali. This reportedly led to a “heated argument between the two” and the WWE star hasn’t been attending shows since.

During an interview with Metro in October 2021, Ali mentioned how Vince McMahon directly told him he was, “Too polished, too clean, too nice. I don’t know if you have it in you!’”

“Even pre-pandemic, I was struggling to maintain television presence and I know it was all character-based,” Ali said. “When you pitch a million and one ideas as far as stories, characters, promos, this and that and you always get told that you’re good but then nothing happens, you start pointing the finger at everybody except for you.

“After sitting at home for seven months and then finally coming back to Monday Night RAW, only to pick up a few victories and then to go back to not being on Monday Night RAW and now being stuck on Main Event, you’re kind of scratching your head,” Ali continued. “Like, what have I gotta do? And then you realize, you’ve gotta go ask the hard questions. I went up to Vince McMahon himself and said, ‘What am I missing?’ [He said], ‘Too polished, too clean, too nice, I don’t know if you have it in you!’”

Wrestling Inc. has reached out to WWE to see if they’ve granted the request, and we will provide any updates should we receive them.

Sepholio 01-17-2022 01:04 AM

I mean it doesn't bother me personally that he said it. But in today's world? Sheeeeit that was about as dumb as it gets. We give Trump shit all the time for the stupid shit he said but not even he has gone this low. Don't act like we all don't know that holocaust jokes are considered the very bottom of the barrel and about the worst thing you can say in public. They have been damn near automatic cancellation for a long time now. Dave being Jewish is why I find his comment to be particularly egregious in that sense; if anyone should know better than to make light of it then it's him.

And Gertner. I love you. A lot. I'd dock with you bro. But there is no way in hell that saying "WWE is having the Elimination Chamber in Saudi Arabia because Auschwitz wasn't available" is anything other than a holocaust joke. A bad joke, but still a joke.

And wtf does Bruce Prichard have to do with this anyways? Fuck that guy too. He needs to retire like 15 years ago. His brother was cooler anyways.

Sepholio 01-17-2022 01:14 AM

You know I do get the criticism of a guy like Ali being too polished and clean. There are several guys like him that I'd put in that category. They are all super talented, far and away some of the best performers in the world. But it does make a lot of their performances look unnaturally choreographed and I can absolutely see why that would turn off some of the old school guys who are still running the show. There are way worse offenders in this category than Ali though.

I would NEVER release a guy for being too good. If I didn't want his stuff looking as clean I would work with him on making his skills look more natural and less rehearsed.

Ali has nothing to worry about though. There will be plenty of interest in him as a talent if they do release him. He is way too good to not be picked up. I just don't know if he's going to find what he's looking for creatively.

Thing is, while it wasn't knee-slapping funny, it was one of those jokes that a room full of comedians would have said amongst themselves - not one many would have tried to make on stage unless it is one of your very blue comedy folk who are known for and made a career saying that kind of shit (like the recently departed Bob Saget). Meltzer is none of those.

And we get the implications about lining up genocide, the unfortunately named PPV match, and the nation of Saudi Arabia, but unless Doug Stanhope was making that comparison in a dive bar show in Nova Scotia, nobody was going to come out of saying that unscathed. Especially not when just uttered publicly on Twitter. Intentionally.

Sepholio 01-17-2022 01:34 AM

Tbh you might catch me making that joke in a private setting. At least in the past I probably would have. But in public? Oof.

Destor 01-17-2022 01:42 AM

with comedy we rob horrors of their power. its imperative that we tear these things down with humour otherwise we make gods of them.

A lot of the time, WWE's creative process sounds more like just trying to bend people to the will of Vince, or, what so-and-so would THINK would try to bend them to. Even from back in the "Lets set up an angle for Owen where he's cheating on his wife" days that he wasn't down for doing at all and he refused to do, there's this underlying element of humiliation for a lot of the shit presented.

Even though I'm not particularly a fan, a case point I will use is Jinder Mahal. At his start in WWE, he was an arrogant rich kid who was just used to getting his way. His ethnicity was incidental, but that whole vibe had legs to not be the standard done thing. The had to potential for another Mohammad Hassan (who really was an Italian guy) type of heel who was a heel in a different way than just being "United States foreigner = bad!!!"

However, except for his time with 3MB, he ended up becoming another stereotype by-the-numbers foreign heel. "He's brown, so he should be wearing a TURBAN! Yeah! That's good shit!"

The part about the "asked to do something he wouldn't do" is what intrigues me, and seems to be a staple of the company. Tell Vince you're scared of parrots? He'll try to make you the next Koko B. Ware! Almost every lucha that comes in gets asked to ditch their mask; meaning be damned. The color yellow makes you physically ill? You'll get a full mustard colored bodysuit, pal! When stuff like this comes up, it seems like more evidence against WWE's claim that ACH's proposed shirt design was "an accident". I wonder what it was that they wanted Ali to do/say/wear/all of the above that made him say "Fuck that noise, I want out"?
