I was thinking yesterday as I had my morning coffee how potentially awesome a heel run for Goldberg could be right now. You never think about it because a heel run was so incredibly stupid in 2000. But imagine a super-rich asshole super-athlete who has all these special requirements written into his contract to protect his greatest assets — his body.
It’d be pretty funny to hear him ragging on fans who want their Superstars to break their necks to prove themselves. He doesn’t get paid by the hour, he gets paid by the win and he’s twice the age of some of these fans, but twice the man and their girlfriends know it. Would be totally fine with that Goldberg winning the WWE Title. The first wrestler in history to win a World Title in four different decades. “Who’s a flash in the pan now?!” Heel Goldberg vs. Big E for the WWE Title at WrestleMania, please. |
That'd make Goldberg the oldest WWE Champion in history. Even Mr. McMahon was younger than him when he won the WWF Championship.
|
I’ve got this weird feeling in my bones that the WWE are going to renegotiate with FOX and get SmackDown upped to 3 hours, possibly starting at 7pm. This would get them more money and push Rampage to being the 4th hour of wrestling that night, hurting them.
There’s been some talk that they will try to get a third hour on Fox Sports 1 after SmackDown, but I think the smarter move is to go earlier. |
I don't really want another Goldberg title reign ever, but if we get one it would def be better by a wide margin were he a heel.
At the same time I think I'd also rather have him as the oldest WWE champion ever instead of Vince. But Vince having the record is probably about as close to a guarantee as you can get that no one will ever break it. |

I think it would work if Goldberg did more stuff like the Ziggler program, or he set his sights on a loud-mouth like Miz. But even then, you’re just bringing a guy out from mothballs to do shtick, which even if it is cool to a lot of people, is going to make that audience segment groan. At first he was massively over, but then you got the feeling that the audience was TRYING to hate it. As a heel it would be wildly fresh. Goldberg is at a stage where he doesn’t give a fuck (nor should he), and he’s actually a pretty decent talker by default, because they just let him go out there and be. I think he would absolutely kill a spoiled star main event run gimmick. Kind of like Douchy Dave Batista, but probably without the skinny jeans. From his end, he’s got a cushy deal now. But if he cares about “legacy,” if he wants to get his son into the business, and even staying in ring shape — I think a more condensed and temporary run, instead of pacing things out with scarce appearances over years, could actually be amazing shit. With Vince — I don’t think he actually would give a shit about being the oldest anything, honestly. He’s an idiosyncratic individual. He hates being mentioned in Hall of Fame speeches and has even made it known to people he doesn’t want to go in himself, even though, objectively, he’s a no-brainer top billing. If someone in shape can carry the load, I think he’d love to be knocked off the totem pole there. |

It seems FOX airs “local broadcasting” at 7pm. Don’t know how valuable that is to them. WWE could realistically make a great offer there for a 8, maybe 9 figures. |
re: Goldberg
If he got in real ring shape where he could go for more than 3-5 minutes doing the nuclear signature move overload then I would absolutely be down for him to have another little run. Him showing up every few months as it is doesn't really bother me, it's how fast he gets gassed. I know he's getting up there but he could absolutely be in much better shape with a little cardio training. I also think working some programs with people smaller than a Roman Reigns, Lesnar, Lashley etc would go a long ways towards putting some of that shine back on him. He looks like he really struggles to lift some of these "bigger" guys. I wouldn't mind seeing him in a program against AJ tbh; I think AJ could absolutely pull a gem out of Goldberg and having him always looking over his shoulder for Omos would definitely add to the appeal, especially when he finally spears the big man into oblivion during his showdown with AJ. |

With guys like Goldberg and Lesnar, I get the perception is that they’re “lazy” or just cashing in or whatever, but I actually think the time is now for both of them to make real runs of it while they can. I’m not a trained wrestler or anything, but I actually think (especially with Goldberg) that doing a little more could actually take a lot of the stress off. Being out there two or three times a year is so damn sparse that I think it could actually be harder than being a guy who works 12-14 times a year or whatever. With Brock, if they’re building up to him and Gable Steveson, it makes sense for him to be a big deal, and maybe not anything past that (unless he really wants to). So if I’m WWE, I kind of go “all in” on Brock to hype that. More dates in the short-term. Maybe a long-term deal he’ll get paid on way after the fact. I use him on television in matches, because that’s “special” now (his match against Kofi was nothing for a reason). It could help boost ratings and also shake the “Brock only does big shows...yawn” stigma about him. Put the Universal Title on him and do six-man tags on SmackDown with him and The Viking Raiders or New Day against Roman & The Usos. It may not draw in three years, but if you’re done with Brock by and large after Steveson, why not use him to prop things up short-term? You can see life past him now in a way that you couldn’t before. |

always wondered why AEW would want to spread itself thinner with rampage.

A thing I love about Minoru Suzuki is that the two big out-of-wrestling passions I know of his are fashion (I believe he owns a clothing store in Harajuku) and One Piece, one of the longest-running and most popular anime/manga series of all time. And it just so happened that the creator of One Piece also has a fondness for classic pro wrestling, which led to Suzuki appearing as a character that's basically just himself under a slightly different name in one of the specials.

WWE has decided to monetise Talking Smack which is going to air after SmackDown and Bryan Alvarez is already being an ass about it on Twitter.
WWE putting more content on the air for more money is not “Weird.” It’s not predatory towards AEW and doesn’t mean they’re a major concern. WWE likes money. Yeah, fucking weird. |
Best Daniel Bryan was Talking Smack Daniel Bryan.

Some people are correctly calling out AEW fanboys having a cry about Talking Smack being on FS1 next week by pointing out that whenever the WWE gets moved to FS1, FOX sweetens the deal by giving them extra content on FS1. This is pretty standard for the WWE/FOX relationship, but AEW hardcores have to make it all about them.

"Oh Vince aggressively added an extra 30 minutes to Smackdown to hurt us!". Vince McMahon can not to tell TV companies when to air his shows. If Fox wanted an extra half hour of better ratings on FS1 then they would normally get by adding an extra 30 minutes of Smackdown, then there will be an extra 30 minutes of Smackdown. Such a bullshit spin by Tony to rally fans. |
