I have fun watching it, most of it. I try not to think too hard beyond that, you know, being a yank with no critical thinking skills and what not.



Same with WWE when I did watch it. I've been on the WWE sucks wagon for about 6-7 years now. I cannot pinpoint the exact catalyst, I just know I found myself not giving a shit anymore, and bored by what was on the TV.



AEW seems entertaining right now, but isn't perfect. There it is, nothing more :)

Take, for example, my argument that the Nielsen ratings are not worth what people on AEW’s dick make them out to be. That they’re compromised of archaic data measuring an increasing archaic medium. Why would advertisers go out of their way to appeal to 200k 49 year old white men through cable television? What about my suggestion that advertisers are interested in other stakeholders now, including women, LGBT+ and POC. That the audience for AEW might be fiercely loyal, but is there any evidence that it’s much deeper than the people who watch weekly, or that their audience is willing to spend money on other things, or be consumers advertisers would want engaging with their products?

Has ANYBODY tried to engage with that point...ever? You maybe have a 14 year old boy level response from someone “No, you’re wrong. You don’t understand TV like *I* do, because here is my appeal to authority,” but you don’t get anyone disputing the actual logic of my thinking there. Because they can’t. Because I. Am. Fucking. Right.

That’s why AEW got booted off TNT for a sport that generates a way lower “key demo” than them. Because AEW might get higher numbers, but it has less appeal than hockey, and it’s just possible that hockey attracts more unique viewers over a season than the 1.1 million diehards that watch AEW every week.

That’s a fair enough subjective view to have. Entirely your prerogative. But do you see what I mean when you’re allowed to say WWE sucks, but not liking AEW is trying to stop people from enjoying things. It’s just that one’s en vogue to shit on, the other isn’t.

My argument has always been that for the majority of wrestling fans who don’t want to engage with wrestling beyond the immediate sense of it (the “casual fan”), AEW does way too much goofy, in the weeds, deep-cut, ironic bullshit that is going to disengage that viewer, or turn off people potentially attracted to the star power they obtain when they get a CM Punk or Bryan Danielson.

The average fan doesn’t want to see something like Orange Cassidy that slaps in the face that they’re engaging with artless fiction, because they are not obsessed on a molecular level with all things pro-wrestling. Being a glutton for punishment isn’t in their DNA like it is people who can actually get through a three hour Raw.

My big gripe with AEW is that it isn’t a wrestling show. It’s a parody show aimed at the most hardcore fan of the wrestling genre. That isn’t for everyone, it isn’t tailor-made for the successes of something that is closer to what has historically worked in wrestling. This isn’t a show aimed at people who liked Raw in 1997 or 1998. It’s a show aimed at people who actively don’t like Raw now.

1.1 million people.

That could be what it is. But it would be nice to have a true alternative to the WWE that doesn’t rely on the narrative that they’re this stale oppressor as the source material for all its drama. It would be great if there was something at a certain level in wrestling, with a certain accessibility and prestige, that presented pro-wrestling in a way that doesn’t have to be insecure with that being what it is. It would be nice to have a promotion that can take these stars from Vince and really challenge him to adapt the way he presents his product, instead of validating his decisions and billions of dollars.

It would also be nice if the narrative surrounding the promotion we do have wasn’t one of “they’re so fucking great, wow so great” when there are common sense reasons and actual evidence that they’re not. And if they want to be a niche product that appeals to 1.1 million people when it is unopposed by any other wrestling (“appeals” might be too strong a word there), then fine. But can we stop this forced narrative of “they’re beating Raw they’re so good!” when you have to squint and sometimes compare separate weeks, looking at very specific subsets of the audience to make that case?

If AEW wanted to be its own style of sports entertainment? Ugh, fine. It’s the last thing I needed, but whatever. But again, it’s the pissing on my leg. If they were fine being that, we wouldn’t have these weekly parties over a largely arbitrary and trivial number that comes in.

It’s not like you don’t have some good points. It’s just exhausting to debate with you. Plus you hate 99% of what they do so why bother? I like most/a lot of what they do. All wrestling companies did some dumb shit over the years. Even when WWF and WCW were red hot, so many bad decisions. I just like to enjoy it and let it play out as it may. Just like I did back then. Sure I can recognize the crap and even call them out for it… but you just shit on it as a whole. You also do it like an asshole. You can’t blame anybody for feeling the way they do towards you but yourself.

And the ratings thing is just fun! It’s trivial. Who cares? It brings some people back to the Monday Night Wars. It isn’t THAT serious. You are being a rain cloud. Nobody likes a rain cloud.
