Watched Operation Mincemeat

Just seen "Pixels"... first and only time "4chan" has been mentioned in a hollywood film flick
|
Black Adam 6/10
Not as bad as people said, but still not that good. I would see a sequel, but I’m not disappointed that there won’t be one. Nothing memorable about this movie. Destor, if you ever want to do another discussion in the entertainment forum make it about the Rock. He’s good and everyone likes him, but all his movies suck or are meh. Why can’t he make a good movie? |
The Fisher King 7/10
A Terry Gilliam film starring Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges. Bridges plays a radio shock jock, whose advice to a radio caller leads to the latter shooting up a night club, killing seven people. Several years later, having spiralled into alcoholism and depression, Bridges encounters the husband of one of the victims of that shooting, who is now homeless and dealing with mental illness. Thus, begins a tale of weirdness and redemption. It's a Gilliam film, so if you like his off-kiltered brand (Brazil, 12 Monkeys, etc), you'll probably like this one. Williams puts in one of his better performances. |

1. Moana- his most culturally significant film easily and its great. 2.Southland Tales- i loved it 3. Be Cool- forgettable 4. Pain and Gain- cant be sure i finished this one 5. Walking Tall- not a bad action flick 6. The Rundown- ok at best 7. The Scorpian King- shouldve been straight to DVD 8. The Mummy Returns- love this movie but he's not really in it That said hes had some huge box office wins. At a point he was the highest paid actor in Hollywood so theres was clearly a market for his generic action films (that i totally passed on.) But ultimately i felt like id seen so little, especially of his box office wins, that i really coukdnt contribute to a conversation about it. |
Emily the Criminal- 7/10
Ate all my typing time of the rock post. Not a bad film. Plaza is really good here. Shes not very versatile as an actress but when she's in her niche i love her and she carries the dramatic role really well. The film on the surface attempts to illuminate a point about the american debt crisis but very subtly underneath that is a strong counter point against the surface level clamorings. The counterpoint is subtle but its there and its appreciated. |
The Russia House 7.3/10
An espionage film starring Sean Connery, Michelle Pfeiffer, Roy Scheider and James Fox. Connery plays a book publisher who is contacted by a Russian scientist, via an intermediary and Russian publicist played by Pfeiffer, who wants Connery's character to publish Russian military secrets about the ineffectiveness of the country's nuclear armaments. The scientist's book to Connery is intercepted by British Intelligence, who subsequently enlist him to go to Russia to figure out whether what they have is actually credible, which involves going through Pfeiffer's character. This is an old style of film; no shootouts, no explosions, no chases. It is all about the story. I think it could of done with a bit more pep, but perhaps that is just my modern sensibilities. The ending is also a little bit too overly optimistic. However, I enjoyed it all the same. It was a bit weird watching Connery mooning over Pfeiffer, considering the age difference (I can't blame him; she is stunning in this film). Both leads turn in top notch performances; Connery actually felt like he was putting effort into the role, rather than relying on his natural charisma to get through a picture. It was also great to see a movie set in Russia actually be filmed in said country. I believe it was the first western movie to be done so. |
Prey was a ton of fun. Probably my favorite predator movie since the original.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) - 8/10
Its certainly a challenging film. It lives in metaphor wrapped in greek mythos and for a general viewing audience this is the kind of the film that would leave most people asking not only what did they watch but why. For those who enjoy a dense film riddled with layer upon layer of deep subtext you'll find this pretty rich. Its a comedy blacker than midnight that skirts around into psychological horror at will. Lanthimos other film i loved, The Lobster, is 70% comedy where this is maybe 20% or less though. Which is fine of course but if you're expecting something tonally similar this isnt it. The acting (Leads are Colin Ferral, Nicole Kidman and Barry Keoghan,) is really excellent but like The Lobster its unconventional. The dialogue in delivery and writing is rigid. Like cardboard. Its unnatural and delivered in a way that feels false. Like we're spectators at an alien zoo trying to understand how these creatures interact with one another. This falsness is deliberate though. The cinematography has the same wrongness about it. Everything is shot with the framing off. Characters faces oddly out of frame or off center in weird ways. The score often runs antagonistic to the scenes. All deliberate. The film using your cinema vocabulary to allow you to fill the gaps emotionally but also narratively. All this comes together for a very weird retelling of a greek myth in a film that never holds your hand. If you like weird and darkly funny morality tales this is the kind of movie you can watch a multiple times, and you probably should. |
Shazam: Fury of the Gods! 7/10
I could bump it higher. This movie is better when Zachary Levi is the only superhero. When the movie started out I thought it was going to be really bad, but I was wrong. I enjoyed it, and I think this is actually a good family movie. Also to be fair there isn’t anything original or great in this, but it was a good watch. This is another DC movie that’s definitely not as bad as people say, and mark another loss for The Rock since is movie is weaker of the two. |
Cocain Bear - 5/10
I didnt choose to watch this but it wasnt as bad as i expected. Film spends a bit too much time on things we dont care about. IE not bears murdering hikers. When it is in its element its pretty funny and theres a few jokes that really landed. Though i do have to say i dont think the writer has ever done cocain. Also there's a fight scene in a bathroom thats clearly choreographed by someone thats only ever had fights described to them. All that said this is a fitting film for Ray Liotta to go out on as it perfectly encapsulates how mediocre most his films were. Formulaic and uninspired. |
Sisu 8/10
Really fun, dumb action flick. It's basically John Wick in World War 2. Though it gets a lot more over the top. |
Dangerous Liaisons 7.5/10
Period drama starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, and very young Keanu Reeves and Uma Thurman. Glenn Close and John Malkovich are great in the two central roles of master manipulators and competitors/lovers; their scenes snap, crackle and pop. Pfeiffer also stands out in the supporting role, though Malkovich's seduction of her does not entirely convince, which I think was perhaps down to some poor editing choices, but that is a trifle. Keanu is the one dud in the casting; he's just not meant for period dramas. |
The Age of Innocence 7/10
A Martin Scorsese film, minus the gangsters and the bloodshed, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder. All three give fine performances in a tale of 1870s New York society, scandal, shattered dreams and unfulfilled desires. |
I saw Steven Spielberg's Munich. It was a decent film but the ending was very strange.
|
Vacation Friends 2 - 6/10
Didn't even know this was a thing until I saw something the other day about it coming out this week. It was just weird and unnecessary... |
Cobweb - 7/10
Anthony Starr is menacing even without Superpowers and the movie built the suspense before crapping on everything that was making the movie work in the last act. |
Damn, I was going to watch those two films tonight…
|
Fatal Attraction 8/10
Moral of the story, chaps: Don't stick your dick in crazy, but if you must, use protection. |
Don’t bang women called Glenn
|
Watching “Vacation Friends 2” and it is actually pretty funny even if the father-in-law schtick has been badly handled. It’s weird, L’il Rel and John Cena are still incredibly likeable so it’s worth pushing through.
|
The cocaine bit cracked me up
|
Yeah, thinking back maybe I was a bit harsh on it... I watched the first one right before the second one so maybe that clouded me a little. The first one has a lot of "heart". Second one has very little "heart" but some of the jokes are alright, and it is good to see the characters again (especially the L'il Rey/Cena interaction as you say)
|
Overall it’s pretty fucking funny, it just doesn’t give Buscemi any really good material and that is a great shame. I still enjoyed it, there’s actually a lot more heart in it towards the end of the film.
I remember really enjoying the first one because it was so daft and John Cena is just a good guy, might watch again now. |
Quote:
You gave it a 6/10 and I’d give it a 2.5/4 so we’re pretty much in agreement that it’s a fine way to spend the time. I like John Cena. I never really watched him wrestle and I can say the same about Batista but Cena is picking projects that I can actually enjoy. I think getting his toe wet in comedy was the right way for him to get into Hollywood, he could realistically transition into drama if he has any interest. The guy can act, I think he is actually the best actor out of the wrestlers-turned actors. The Rock is fun, Batista is fun but John Cena is actually gifted as a performer in a way that makes me think he could be the top dog if he keeps his trajectory. Cena man… I cannot say I saw him as a great actor but he has done so well I can’t even doubt him now. |
Cena has really found his niche I think.
Don't really remember him too well playing the serious villain role in Fast 9... but in Fast 10 they had him move into his "niche" of lighthearted funny guy. |

The OG one or the one with Pacy from Dawson's Crik? |
OG Michael Douglas, Glenn Close and Anne Archer.
|
Reversal of Fortune 6/10
Drama/mystery starring Glenn Close, Jeremy Irons, Ron Silver and Annabella Sciorra, based on the "true story" of Sonny von Bulow, and the appeal of her husband's convictions of attempted murder against her. Close and Irons provide some fine performances, but there is something unsatisfactory about the film, which I can't put my finger on. |
Saw a PrettyCool movie called The Last Black Man in San Francisco.
|
Was he gay
|
Was it a porno
|
Neither.
Saw Black Hawk Down for the first time. It was very good. |
Solid 'war' movie.

Chinatown 7.5/10

Watching a movie called "Extra Ordinary"

Watching Hard Eight. Didn't know such a movie existed until a few minutes ago.

This movie is something else.

Philip Baker Hall and Samuel Jackson are too good.

Watching Confess, Fletch
|
“Hard Eight” is a great film. I’m glad you enjoyed it, it knocked my socks off too. I’d say it’s his most naturally played film, it works because you just go with it given the setting. Gwyneth Paltrow was never better.
|
Confess, Fletch was a fun watch. John Hamm was delightful.
|
He is much more suave than Chevy Chase but roughly as funny. Chevy always pulled the same faces.
|
Watched Mississippi Grind and the misery just hit on another level.

Oldboy (2003) - 8/10
Going into this i was expecting an action film. The action is ok so i was initially feeling pretty underwhelmed by it. But this is the kind of movie that lives and dies on the 3rd act reveal and it really delivers. The acting in the final sequences is really really strong. I know there's an american version but i cant possibly imagine it working |
I don't know why I'm so afraid to watch that movie.
|
It has some body horror but its all off screen
|
The plot is ultra fucked though

Spider-man: Across the Spiderverse- 8/10
Lacks the charm and fun of the first installment and the characters arent as strong but the interpersonal conflicts are really satisfying and everything ties together well. Action is pretty gold and the animation is as good as ever. It falls short of the 1st film but its not bad at all. Will absolutely watch pt3 |
Intolerable Cruelty (2003) - 9/10
Among the Coen's funniest works. The script is as sharp and witty as anything theyve ever written and moves at the fast pace O' Brother Where Art Thou. The cast, led by George Clooney, is really excellent. Even Catherine Zeta-Jones holds her own though admittedly she is the weakest part of the film. The climax to Wheezy Joe's arc is one of the funniest gags ive ever seen. Billy-bob Thortons bit is also excellent. Joel is a very competent director here too. He puts together dozen or more ways to shoot the same rooms that keep it visually interesting while the cast delivers this top shelf dialog. At is core its a romcom but it also isnt. It stands next to them in almost in a meta commentary mocking the genre. Here the Coens strike a norm macdonald-esqu snicker that only he could do where we and him are somehow cohorts in the joke he's crafting. Its sarcastic and ironic and insincere and somehow in the face of all that its charming. The only real critique i have is due to its comedic insincerity its climax is by nature insincere. Perhaps there was better way to resolve the picture but atleast as it resolves it manages to still be cute, funny and little bit witty. |
That film doesn’t get the credit it deserves so I’m glad to see you appreciate it
|
“Oldboy” is the film that exposed me to South Korean cinema, it opened the door for so many brilliantly fucked up films and yet it is still the best of the bunch. The Spike Lee remake is trash but Elizabeth Olsen gets her jugs out so it’s not all bad.
|
I saw Barbie and thought it was sweet and heartfelt. I’m obviously not the target audience which might be why I felt Ryan Gosling stole the show.
|
That sounds like a dreadful way to spend two hours

Ive heard tell it has a couple of musical numbers so ill check it out at some point

Margot Robbie doesn’t get her tits out for a change, no thanks. Margot Robbie has really nice tits, I’m not wasting time like that.
|
She’s one of the ones where you go “Oh wow those are great tits” but not if she keeps them in. Helen Mirren knows.
|
Solution: watch Barbie with a pic of her tits pulled up on your phone within eye sight.
|
Triangle of Sadness (2022) - 8/10
This is a film that really couldve taken the easy way out and still had the clapping seals rolling in the isle but instead takes the hardest route it can and tears everyone down along the way. Its really impossible to talk about the film without REALLY talking about the film. SPOILER: show |
Is that the French film with Woody Harrelson in it?
I remember repeatedly looking at the poster for it and wondering if that was something I could justify spending three hours watching… I’ll have to watch it now because I don’t want to click that spoiler. |

Hollywood got her naked so fast… these modern women are quicker to disrobe than anybody ever was. I’m still trying to whack off to Angie Dickinson. |
Antipating all the shitty horror movies that premiere on Shudder/AMC soon

Watching a Netflix documentary called The Elephant Whisperers. The visuals are so beautiful.

You don’t have to whisper, bigger ears doesn’t always mean better hearing.

Watching "They Cloned Tyrone"
|
Did they clone Tyrone?
|
They clearly did, it’s in the title
|
Spoiler alert

Did Peggy Sue get married?
|
Look at this asshole, doesn’t even realise that the best zinger is “Did Freddy get fingered?”.
|
Seanny would you like some sausage?
|
Hey, it’s better than Bob the Butler
|
Freddy Got Fingered is funny as hell because I like dumb comedy.
|
What About Bob? on the other hand, fantastic film.
|
A Haunting in Venice - 8/10
I like this movie series. Perhaps liked this one more than the others because I have not actually read the book it is based on and so the "reveal" was actually a reveal. Was "worried" that this movie was gonna be "scary"... but was not scary at all |

I could not get invested in Asteroid City.

That’s because it sucked balls

"Attempting" to watch Blue Beetle
|
I'm watching a movie called Bottoms. It's similar to Superbad but the leads are lesbians.
|
Nothing like “Superbad” then.
|
I'd argue Michael Cera, McLovin, and Jonah Hill look like a bog-standard lesbian thruple.
