Wow, 2014 Impact called. They want their ratings back.

Eeek. Dixie Carter to buy AEW. That's the rumours I've been hearing.

This makes it look like less of a stage dive into an adoring crowd, and more him dropping the Macho Man elbow on someone he didn't want filming him.

Straight outta WWE. How did Cody know this was going to happen to position himself in the crowd for the “save.” I use quotes because Rosario Dawson held her own against one of their top heels. And why did security just let her in? WWE gets blasted every time they do a bullshit angle like this.

Remember when Cody used to take shots at WWE having an invisible wall? Lol, the days of any effort being put into their presentation are long gone. It’s sports entertainment tropes all the way.

No, it wasn’t. The issue is I like good stuff. 95% of AEW is bad. MJF and Brian Pillman, Jr. had a scorcher of a segment last week. Near perfection. I’ve actually rewatched it a few times to just marvel at the performances. I haven’t done that for an MJF promo since prior to his Moxley feud.

If something is good, I’ll say it’s good. It’s just that you can drive a truck through the logic gaps in this program. It rarely makes anyone look better than they already did or should have. The matches are repetitive white noise. The promos are way overrated. The commentary is awful. There are production mishaps all the time. And the show has this self-congratulatory attitude, like they truly believe that anything they do is golden.

I’ve said it before: Start up another promotion with the same resources and book it properly and it does way better than AEW. And the rats will jump from that ship in a second.

Sure. Bryan is over, which is a good start. Guru Dave Callis comes out, and while it’s sad that Cyrus is celebrated as a manager in 2021, he’s not bad at his job. His line about Bryan being a hippy millionaire was actually good. Can’t remember anything else he said. Bryan either had trouble remembering his lines or got lost. He’s doing that unnatural thing wrestlers do in AEW, which is swear to try and sound cool. Jericho does it too. Swearing, on its surface, is not cool on its own. It can make for lovely punctuation, but you have to be 12 to think that calling someone a “piece of shit” in 2021 is edgy.

Bryan does the Goldberg thing and basically pushes his claim to the belt to the side for...reasons. I’ve seen people defend this by saying “AEW isn’t WWE, they don’t hand out title shots!” Bullshit. This is straight out of WWE. They just did this. And Bryan will win the non-title match and get a title shot. Just. Like. WWE.

Instead of giving New York a WrestleMania-level moment they can remember forever and even earmark this as an annual event, they’re going to try and get the snarky crowd to will this forward by manufacturing this “dream match atmosphere.” You know, instead of actually creating drama and having a genuine emotional release.

Having a non-title is fine, Danielson shouldn't get an immediate title shot as was discussed during the angle last night thus it's a match for bragging rights, who is the best?

The title can come into play later on if that's where AEW ends up going with Danielson/Omega. Though I'm having doubts that AEW will offer a rematch on the PPV after having the first encounter on TV, twice in a row after they did that with Christian and Omega. Full Gear will probably be Omega/Hangman, I presume.

Anyway.

One issue I'm having with Danielson so far is that I feel the crowd should be hotter for him than they are. Perhaps it's because of the knowledge we all had that he was coming in. Perhaps it's because Punk was so overwhelming for everyone just weeks before. But the biggest thing I'm noticing is that if Danielson came out and did his YES gesture that the fans would probably be in unison with him and chanting YES as loud as possible.

Without the YES he doesn't really have a chant for the crowd. In WWE it was DANIEL BRYAN clap clap clap clap clap or YES YES YES. So either the fans will get creative and come up with something new for him or AEW will direct them to something new somehow. But he needs that chant to get the reaction we all expect from him.

I do not foresee YOU'RE GONNA GET YOUR FUCKING HEAD KICKED IN chant to get back on the Danielson stage. Newark basically no sold The American Dragon mention last night.

I know Bryan said he didn't know if he was able to do the YES chant and gesture but I am quite certain he can. I just don't think he wants to, which is fine. I think that he could end up best used as a heel after this program with Omega. Most of his more interesting matches are actually with babyfaces so I think eventually he goes bad Bryan.

Bragging rights to find out who is the best is what a championship is for. That’s its literal purpose. If you are the two best wrestlers in the world, and one of you wins a match between you, that wrestler should be champion.

I’ve heard people say that Bryan shouldn’t walk into the company and get a title shot? Why not? Why promote him as a giant star and actually tell people he’s one of the best in the world if you’re going to make him climb this fictional ladder? Why put those obstacles in front of themselves?

1.1

I remember when SCG Radio made fun of TNA for having a 1.1 problem. They could never get past that rating. AEW has a 1.1 problem of their own. Theirs is viewership.

They just got handed possibly the most likeable star in all of wrestling. Of course that brings them some attention. But then, either because of what that star does or doesn’t do, or the show around them, people tune back out.

WWE gets mocked for losing their audience and not creating new fans. Why does AEW escape criticism for their own ineptitude? 1.4 million people checked them out opposed by other wrestling. About half of those people said “Nope, not for me.” Now they are on a wrestling-free night and they sit at about 1.1 million every week, and every time there is a big star — either from the world of celebrity sports or wrestling — they climb for a moment and then most of those people say “Nope, not for me.”

Can we please stop acting like this show is somehow successful at creating appealing content while WWE is not? What you can say for one can be said for the other. They are both bad television in their different ways, but they are both definitely bad television.

And no, Americans are not known for their taste. Something being popular doesn’t mean it’s good. Conversely, being unpopular doesn’t mean something is bad. But wrestling’s viewership being even as high as it is is reflective of that bad taste. This isn’t something good waiting to be discovered. This is something most people turn off because it doesn’t tick enough boxes for them. Stop lying and telling me it does.

Noid 09-17-2021 05:10 PM

Hey folks, just dropping by to take your fandom down a notch. You see, what you enjoy is not really my cup of tea. It's a bit embarrassing to see you all having such a good time while I bask in my misery. There's room for plenty more, come be miserable with me

Mr. Nerfect 09-17-2021 05:11 PM

And why would WWE change? The only reason to do so would be to stop talent from jumping ship. But when you jump ship you go from one frying pan into another frying pan. You’re going into witness protection. You’re trading fame and recognition to basically appear on a game show.

And this is the problem I’ve had with AEW from the start. They are not good enough to use their resources to actually put the flame to WWE. So what you’re going to get is WWE being WWE, and their nearest challenger being closer to ROH than them in terms of popularity, making it look like this is the best anyone can do against Vince. It’s actually not a good thing for wrestling, and people won’t look past the simplistic arguments of “Guys have jobs,” “They’re getting paid a lot,” “There’s more wrestling on TV.” This is sucking the well dry, because it’s 10 hours of bad wrestling on basic cable or network TV every week. It’s going to take its toll.

My biggest hope is still that another billionaire comes in and just buys all the talent worth a shit from the indies, MLW, the NWA, ROH and AEW. Tony won’t have the balls to say no to people asking for releases. Either that or all this bad wrestling acts as an incubator, so when someone finally comes along in later years and does something good, it’s like wrestling has been dark for so long that it’s fresh again. 2001-whenever that is will be remembered as the Dark Ages — the Sports Entertainment Years. Then we’ll get the debut of 21st Century Pro-Wrestling.

Noid 09-17-2021 05:21 PM

I too want Dwayne Johnson to start a wrestling promotion that caters to my unique, refined and well endowed taste.

Lol, right on cue. These posts are so predictable. Instead of actually responding to my reasonable post, some of which was directly requested by another poster, here comes a dude with a sock account dedicated to me to try and attack me instead of the actual argument.

Not miserable, folks. Just because I type “This show sucks” doesn’t mean I’m not having a jolly good time doing it. Weird concept, I know. Do I wish wrestling was better? Of course. Am I sorry that one of my favorite art forms has been diluted and trivialized to the point it can barely qualify as art? Sure. But I’m not miserable. I get my wrestling fix from other sources now. And it’s left me with a lot more time to read, exercise, go out for nice meals and work on personal projects. Cutting out wrestling has actually been a net good in my life. It’s just a shame I had to do it.

If you still enjoy this crap, cool. You do you. I’ve said that many times. But there is a difference between subjective enjoyment and objective success. And there’s a difference between you enjoying something and it actually being good.

Don’t tell me that AEW is this raging success where WWE isn’t. Don’t tell me it’s narrowing this gap when it’s not. Don’t tell me that $45 million a year is a shit-load of money in television terms. Don’t tell me that 1.1 million viewers is some amazing number, while 1.75 million is a sinking ship. Don’t fucking lie to me. I don’t lie to you. I tell you exactly what I think on a DISCUSSION BOARD. We’re here to DISCUSS ideas, not blindly prop up your sensitive fandom that can’t survive a healthy dose of reality.

If you love AEW — good for you. Some people like Vegemite too. Cool. Grow a set of balls and enjoy what you enjoy. But you have to accept that some people aren’t going to like it, and that some people are going to call a spade a spade in regards to that.

And that’s why people around here get so bothered by me. It really is. They know I’m right, and it does wet their socks a little. That’s why you don’t see actual retorts to my posts, and just have insecure idiots trying to tell me off for being miserable, posting on a board I’ve been frequenting for 20 years, making sick accounts, telling me to relax, etc. I’m sorry that your wrestling doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. But maybe hold AEW to a higher standard instead of shooting the messenger?

Warning, tangent + *stirring the pot*:

I feel like just by being in AEW that CM Punk and Daniel Bryan have lost a lot of their "allure"... seeing a small dude "break through" almost "against what the company wanted"... which is just not something that AEW can recreate because there are a million small dudes and the company wants them all to be over.

So in a way, by the very act of being in an "oppressive regime" is what made them great, and without that they are just "another guy"

Evil Vito 09-18-2021 09:57 AM

Bryan Danielson is pretty much universally considered one of the best wrestlers in the world, has yet to wrestle a single AEW match and already he’s get the “just another guy” label?

Lmao.

Lock Jaw 09-18-2021 10:45 AM

Part of that is WWE's fault, and his own for getting a short haircut. He was already feeling not super special anymore. Maybe he can turn it around, but his debut and promos weren't exactly great showings. Pair it with a terrible theme song, mayne not being able to do the "yes" thing, and his short hair, and you get just another talented guy in AEW.

Jordan 09-18-2021 11:57 AM

I think the Omega program is the best first program he could have. The only issue I really have is that without the YES chant his reactions are not as awesome as they could be. It's pretty obvious that Punk is the bigger star right now and maybe even Moxley. But after Wednesday we will see how it goes forward with Danielson.

I expect his reaction to be huge on Wednesday and I think that after his first match we will get deeper with him.

How the hardcore wrestling bubble and the general wrestling bubble perceive Bryan and Punk signing with AEW is very different. The general bubble doesn’t get much airplay, but there are people out there who absolutely do see Punk as a failed MMA guy and Bryan as a guy that couldn’t hack it in WWE anymore.

For me, the backdrop they’re against just doesn’t do them favors. It was never going to. Like how some people go “I just don’t think (x) is a good fit for New Japan.” I just don’t think Punk and Bryan are really good fits for AEW.

I’m happy these guys are leaving WWE. But there’s just nowhere for them to go that seems like the perfect environment for them. Imagine some other promotion getting Christian Cage, CM Punk, Samoa Joe, Bryan Danielson and Brock Lesnar this year. Just epic.

Maybe TK will get bored, ask his dad for more money and just buy the NWA or start a new promotion for either Punk or Bryan to actually book? Then he can send the guys that want to do pro-wrestling there and leave AEW for the sports entertainment stuff.

"Destination Unknown..."

As for the one last Ace Tony Khan talked about, I have a 100% guarantee: We will see Marty Scurrl in AEW before we see Bray Wyatt. I can say that because, even if the only member of the Elite not in AEW never "Whoop Whoops" his way to the ring due to allegations, Bray Wyatt will not be in AEW. Will we see Windham Rotunda? Possibly, maybe even absolutely. But We will not Bray Wyatt in AEW for the same reason we didn't see Johnny B. Badd in WWF.

Time will tell if Windham Rotunda the wrestler is as big of a star as Bray Wyatt the character was. I doubt it.

Also, there are more than enough Neckbeard fans that would love to see the Villain in AEW. Too bad AEW isn't big on having abusers on their payroll, except for the ones that they have.

Mr. Nerfect 09-18-2021 05:59 PM

AEW was down 11%. NXT was up 28%. Maybe we shouldn’t be talking about Dynamite surpassing Raw?

Noid 09-18-2021 07:22 PM

Realistically, who cares if Dynamite beats RAW in the ratings. They're already producing relatively better content.

CM Punk sold out an area and pulled a million tv viewers on the rumor of him showing up and along Danielson helped sell 200k PPVs. Plus their merch is red hot.

Plus Punk and Danielson were instead draws and very popular in a very un WEE environment because they’re talented not because they’re trying to break thru a glass ceiling.

A lot of people do. It can be a measure of whether something is effective. It’s not a 1:1 comparison of whether or not something is actually good, but you can measure how effective something is at retaining viewers.

Big disagree they are producing better content. When you take things in isolation (I can’t stomach watching full shows), a lot of what the WWE produces is actually better than AEW. They just have the good vibes. A good match in WWE is better than a good match in AEW, and promos largely suck across the board. But a Paul Heyman promo is going to put anything in AEW, except for maybe MJF on ice. And the shows are sometimes even more logical in WWE, which is weird and uncomfortable to say.

I would argue Bryan is the biggest star they have ever, and probably will ever sign. All that he shouldn't just walk in a get a title shot is bullshit too, because they literally did exactly that with Ruby Soho. Yes she had to win a battle royal, but if anybody thinks Bryan has to prove himself, well I would say they have no knowledge of professional wrestling history.

The guy is a 2 time Wrestlemania Main Eventer, which is the total number of WM Main Eventers the ENTIRE AEW roster has, and those go back to 2000 and 2002 with Big Show and Jericho.

Lol, right? What did Ruby Soho do anywhere that qualifies her for a title shot that Danielson hasn’t? Soho won a staggered Battle Royal with an advantage over all her competition without even the publicly known pedigree of a successful run elsewhere.

But it’s totally illogical for Bryan Danielson — six-time World fucking Champion and probably former #1 on their exonerated PWI Top 200 several times — to get a title shot against the guy he is having an alleged “dream match” with anyway.

Hogwash. I actually think they will do an angle to make it a title match on the show, because it’s just ludicrous to not.
