After constant complaints and ridicule over their "DRM" policy for PC games, Ubisoft announces they have officially decided to ditch the setup.

According to the company, they've been planning and gradually changing their DRM policy since last June from an "always on" to a one time online registration needed. The process will be complete once Assassin's Creed III is released.

Quote:

“We have listened to feedback,” said Ubisoft worldwide director for online games Stephanie Perottiand, ”and since June last year our policy for all of PC games is that we only require a one-time online activation when you first install the game, and from then you are free to play the game offline.”
The changes were meant to ease complaints over the "always on" DRM causing the single player portion of a game to be unplayable anytime Ubisoft servers went down or had issues.

Ubisoft thinks the days of massive "blockbuster Triple-A" games is nearing an end due to the gaming industry shifting to a new development model.

In an interview with Edge magazine, the creative director for Assassin's Creed III, Alex Hutchinson, believes his game will be part of the last set of massive "triple-A" status games.

His basis revolves around the idea the gaming industry is moving away from massive projects which takes years, multiple studios, and hundreds of employees to a new model which can produce games in a quicker time at a smaller scale.

Quote:

"We're the last of the dinosaurs. We're still the monster triple-A game with very large teams [and] multiple studios helping out on different bits. There are fewer and fewer of these games being made, especially as the middle has fallen out," he said.
His feelings on the subject have been expressed similarly by other people in the industry such as Cliff Bleszinski who feels the rising costs in game development will hurt the quantity of "Triple A" games during the next generation of consoles. Bleszinski believes the industry might be near the point where only the really big companies can afford to produce massive "blockbuster" games.

This is kind of funny, when Epic Games was having a tantrum about the new gen of consoles not pushing far enough and coming out fast enough. And while I'm too lazy to check, I thought Cliff Bizarro was onboard with said tantrum.

That being said, I won't be sad to see "Triple A" gaming collapse in on itself. The soaring costs are one of the reasons profit-obsessed companies are trying to whack us in every possible way, and that's mostly been furthered by a dev cost arm's race.

Also, it'll piss off the PC crybabies who whine that 720p is "unplayable garbage."

According to a source close to Vivendi states the company is still going ahead with plans for an eventual buyout although recent stipulations are making it a lot harder for a deal to be done.

Vivendi is still demanding an offer of around 10 billion euros along with the inability to purchase their assets separate as part of any deal to buy out the company. Activision and Blizzard which are both owned by Vivendi are being valued at around 8 billion euros within the offer itself.

Quote:

Philippe Capron, Vivendi finance director, last week claimed that the entertainment empire had ruled out a "straight break-up" between its media and telecoms operations.
Microsoft is currently in negotiations for a potential buyout but the status of the talks is close to falling apart with the main issue being Microsoft wants the asking price to be lowered. Sony themselves have stated they have no interest at all in doing any negotiations regardless if the price itself were to be lowered.

Bullshit on the Mega Man thing. While the series did have spin-offs in to other types, no human being is not gonna think of a fucking action side-scroller when you say Mega Man to them. And people were pretty damn clear that they wanted Legends 3. And Universe. And then they drop not one but two iOS games. Where is the disagreement about this? Who in Capcom doesn't get what the next game should be? Was Inafune that important for what seems to be simple decisions?

Ultra Mantis 09-08-2012 08:18 AM

There's pretty much only Classic, X and Legends that are popular anyway. When people say they want a new Mega Man game I doubt many of them are talking about ZX, Battle Network or Star Force.

Ultra Mantis 09-08-2012 08:20 AM

And absolutely nobody is talking about iOS.

I was under the impression that MMBN was pretty popular.

Ultra Mantis 09-09-2012 05:10 PM

Nowhere near the level of classic or X, to be fair I don't think fans would be so rabid for a Legends sequel if Capcom hadn't announced and cancelled it in the first place. Not that it's the only factor, if they announced and canned Mega Man Soccer 2 I wouldn't expect similar reactions.

The Megaman X series was always my favorite from the Megaman franchise.

According to the New York Times, EA has made several recent attempts to buy out Valve with the most recent offer being around $1 billion.

Quote:

Electronic Arts “would very likely have valued Valve at well over $1 billion had the talks progressed that far,” according to the article. This was based on statements made by a couple of people familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Valve has reportedly rejected the offers with the reasons being they are currently happy with their status as a small privately-owned company and EA not coming anywhere close to the actual value of the company which is estimated to be around $2.5 billion.

According to Gabe Newell, the company also thinks had a deal been reached, EA would just terminate the company in a couple of years while keeping the sole rights to all the IPs owned by Valve. Newell would rather have the company shut down than be bought out if the choice was ever to be realistically made.

Quote:

According to the article, Mr. Newell is on record as saying: “It’s way more likely we would head in that direction than say, ‘Let’s find some giant company that wants to cash us out and wait two or three years to have our employment agreements terminate.”

Insomniac Games, who has made plenty of single player games in the past, announces they don't think they will ever make another single player-only game in the future with the upcoming Fuse being the start of their new philosophy.

In an interview with GameSpot, the CEO of the company, Ted Price, states the change in direction is due to social technology and the state of the industry which no longer is favorable to single player-only games.

Quote:

“I can’t imagine that any game we’d do from here on out will be single-player-only,” Price told GameSpot. “The [game industry] has changed. As gamers, we have always been social, but thanks to the way technology has evolved, it’s much easier for us to play together. And it’s much easier for developers to create experiences where you can play together. So we want to encourage that with all of our games because ultimately, in my opinion, it’s often more fun to play with a friend.”
He was careful to mention this doesn't meant Insomniac Games will only be making multiplayer-only games since Fuse does contain a single player campaign. Instead they will switch the priority towards online multiplayer when developing new projects.

The decision itself might have also been influenced recently by EA who is the publisher for Fuse. EA stated they no longer will allow games to be released by them (developed or published) if they do not contain some form of online multiplayer.

Granted, if they include more co-op campaigns and the like, I can't see it as a bad thing. But if they do end up harming single player/story mode, the end result will probably be mediocre all around.

Hell I made a thread where I promoted co-op in everything ever, I love it. But when modes like that are shoehorned like the whole Spec Ops fiasco, it ends up being a waste.

Briefly announced in the Wii U thread but Nintendo reveals Bayonetta 2 will be an exclusive game for the Wii U.

Very few details were revealed but the game is a sequel of the original game and will contain tablet-based features. Nintendo also confirmed they have funded the entire project for developers Platinum Games and own the rights to publish the game which is why Sega won't (Platinum's actual publisher).

Atsushi Inaba who was the producer of Viewtiful Joe, Ōkami and God Hand was revealed to be lending support in developing the game.

According to some rumors, Sega cancelled the project on their side which is how Nintendo was able to take over the project while Platinum Games relationship with Sony recently soured in Japan to the point of Sony unwilling to help them out.
