Al Snow's wrestling school is structured like a college degree program

If you think on it, Al Snow is probably the most old school of all trainers there is. He wrestled in the early 80's quite extensively. I bet he's hell.

Ol Dirty Dastard 06-22-2020 10:38 AM

I was listneing to a podcast about the tough enough when Bob Holly roughed up Capotelli. And the podcasters noted how obvious it was that it was the doing of Al Snow. Holly might have "done the deed" but Snow was clearly pulling the strings.

When you learn how pissed off Holly already was, especially with his neck injury, it tends to add up.

Seanny One Ball 06-22-2020 10:58 AM

Al Snow tells a good story about making it through Ole and Gene Anderson's training try outs. I can see him putting the youngsters through that.

I believe Al said in a separate interview that Holly roughing up Cappotelli was bullshit and more the result of the fact that Bob and other guys resented the Tough Enough kids for getting the perceived fast track.

Of course, he could just be bullshitting the interviewer to cover himself.

Ol Dirty Dastard 06-22-2020 11:07 AM

That is probably just Al babyfacing himself.

Took less than a year for FOX to start having some regrets over their WWE deal.

Wonder if he's going to change his tone with his coverage of WWE news or still kiss the company's ass in order to keep most favored status with them.

Once he got hired for that show, he pretty much quickly pulled a 180 with how he covered and reported WWE news, especially with stuff that was controversial or negative towards the company.

lol yeah. He gets irked that so many people in the business regard Savage/Steamboat as the best match at WM3. He doesn't even think it's subjective, Hogan/Andre had to be the best match because it's what drew the gate.

He gets so hung up on the wording of it too. "Hogan/Andre had the most important match", "NO, they brought in the money, therefore had the BEST FUCKING MATCH"

Ol Dirty Dastard 06-23-2020 08:17 AM

I get where he's coming from. He's trying to make the point that all the other matches mean nothing without the big draw. It's a fair point and honestly, Hogan and Andre, despite its limitations, really did work as a match. But I think it's a bit simplistic and - yea - I feel like the viewing audience can be enthralled by a match that isn't a big money draw.

Evil Vito 06-23-2020 08:19 AM

I get his point too, but I've actually started following promotions because a midcard match blew me away and made me want to check out more. Maybe I'm in the minority.

You are. For wrestling to transcend a niche audience, you need the big, flashy names that draw people in.

Yes, the workrate guys are great to keep people invested until the main event. But that marquee match is literally EVERYTHING as far as attracting attention goes.

I still don't think that means Hogan/Andre the best match on the show though. Definitely the biggest spectacle and most profitable.

Evil Vito 06-23-2020 08:46 AM

Oh yeah no doubt it was the biggest attraction. I just think trying to make it sound like “best match” isn’t even a matter of opinion is a bit daft. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

The one good thing about that line of thinking is that I’d imagine Al discourages his wrestlers from taking any unnecessary dangerous bumps or whatever since everything is window dressing before the main.

Ol Dirty Dastard 06-23-2020 09:06 AM

In saying that, how important were those TLC matches towards the end of the attitude era?

Supreme Olajuwon 06-23-2020 09:22 AM

One problem for me is that with the length of pay per views these days, I’m usually either burnt out or just done watching the show by the time the main event comes on so I don’t really care about it. I haven’t watched a Wrestlemania main event since 31.

I am not a main event mark at all. Always loved the whole card.

Charlotte supposedly legit injured which is why they did the whole angle with Nia injuring her shoulder or w/e. Actual injury hasn't been disclosed but she is going to be out awhile for surgery. Rumors saying she isn't expected back until Royal Rumble season.

Some ironic comedy there when they make Nia Jax injuring someone a "story line".

Apparently the reason why refs rarely get referenced by name and the lack of a modern day Earl Hebner in WWE in recent years is due to Vince kept forgetting who they were and got annoyed that commentary routinely knew their names better than he did.

Why is that?

Mike Chioda, who had been with WWE for 30 years before being released in April, provided a reason on Talk is Jericho.

"I believe it was they were saying the referee's names too much. It wasn't with me, it was with another referee, and [Vince] didn't recognize their name and he was like, 'Who is this?' They said, 'Oh, it's the referee.' He goes, 'Goddamnit, I'm done hearing the referee's name. I don't want to hear his name no more.' They were putting him over too much and he didn't recognize the name," he said.

Chris Jericho noted that Vince's reaction was "Classic Vince."

Chioda joked that Vince would use the phrase, "'Referees, they don't sell tickets, they comp tickets.'"

Though Vince might not know the names of some referees, he always had a good relationship with Chioda.

"It was always a good relationship, on the fly, Vince is a very busy man. There was a time years ago when we would have more conversations. Not so many in the last so many years. Vince comes out of the office, goes to Gorilla, will be there for some rehearsals. My relationship with Vince was awesome over 35 years," he said. "[Vince] said, 'I need you to put these rules into effect with young talent. Whatever you do, I will back you up.' He would always tell me, 'If you ever have to count him out, I don't give a damn. You do your job and make them work around you.'"

Gonna ride past the low hanging fruit of Nia Jax and injury being used jointly again like she's so much All Red Everything, and instead ask: isn't an injury angle what they did back when Charlotte's boob caught a flat? Wonder if this is another tire rotation...

drave 06-24-2020 10:40 AM

It isn't low hanging if it's true though.

I had it on in the background and as soon as I heard her theme, I said out loud "oh shit, wonder who is getting injured tonight." It's shitty that its the first thought, but its the first thought for a very valid, and visible reason.

The fact it was worked into an angle is even more hilarious, but also sad. Seems as though the writers went for the low hanging fruit.

Don't have any favourites in general, probably because i only watch the odd show now and again and highlights on youtube.

Bad News Gertner 06-24-2020 08:05 PM

Been hoping this would pop up on youtube forever. In May 1985 the WWF did an all jobber edition of Tuesday Night Titans. It's fucking amazing. Rusty Brooks who is by far the highlight of this episode appears at the 18 minute mark with Jim Powers and my buddy Jose Luis Rivera.

Mr. Nerfect 06-25-2020 01:29 AM

Don't know if it popped up in here, but MLW is teasing a working relationship with New Japan.
