Random thing I learned today

From June 5. 2000 to June 12 2000 your WWF and WCW Hardcore champions were Gerald Brisco and Eric Bischoff

GD 05-08-2020 11:38 PM

WWE Untold: I am The Game is quite a ride. Although I do question the historical accuracy at times.

Eager to watch some new episodes of the "Dark Side of The Ring" series.

XL 05-09-2020 02:09 AM

I watched that Untold episode. Other than them trying to sell HHH as a “marquee name” (in his own use of the words) I don’t recall too much in the way of historical inaccuracy.

James Steele 05-09-2020 04:46 AM

With Austin & Taker out injured and The Rock becoming the #1 babyface, Triple H was the #1 heel and a marquee name for WWF at the turn of the millennium because of that series with Foley. Triple H said they were trying to establish him as a marquee name from the summer of 99 and you can’t argue that he hasn’t been a marquee name for 20 years now. Is he on the Mt. Rushmore with Hogan, Austin, Rock, and Flair? No, but he is easily one of the 20 biggest stars in the history of wrestling and one of the top 5 stars since the turn of the millennium.

Ol Dirty Dastard 05-09-2020 06:26 AM

The fact that you even bring up him being on the Mount Rushmore of wrestlers, even if only to say he isn't, is fucking laughable.

#1-norm-fan 05-09-2020 07:13 AM

I will say that Triple H’s run is much more tolerable in hindsight but it’s only because the product has somehow gotten progressively worse since his reign of terror. Sometimes I wonder if his entire plan now that he has some control is to make people think he was better than he actually was by making wrestling unbelievably bad.

Bad News Gertner 05-09-2020 07:51 AM

It also helps when you're banging the bosses daughter and book yourself to never lose. He dragged that show down for 5 years.

He's like maybe in the top 200 stars

James Steele 05-09-2020 09:22 AM

2002-2003 was the drizzling shits, but his run from 99 to his injury in 01 was great. I blame bad storylines (02) and shitty opponents (03) more than anything. Even then, you got the HBK return and start of feud in there that’s pretty fucking good. 2004-Jan 2007/quad tear #2 was pretty good with the matches with Benoit/HBK/Batista/Cena/Flair. The DX reunion skits were average, but the matches were good. He run on SmackDown! was good wrestling Edge, Jeff Hardy, etc. He couldn’t pull shit out of Khali and Kozlov but who could? WM25 got crippled by shitty booking. Then, after that he’s part time and pretty much doing 1 offs at Mania. Sheamus match was good. Taker matches were classic. Brock was good. Bryan was a classic. Sting was a fun story, and the finish made sense at the time. The reigns match was more about Reigns being a black hole of fan support at the time. Rollins was a great match. The Rousey mix tag was tremendous. Batista match was better than it had any right to be and that’s because HHH carried it. The international shows in recent years are what they are, but I wouldn’t classify them as bad.

Ol Dirty Dastard 05-09-2020 09:37 AM

lol.

Bad News Gertner 05-09-2020 09:54 AM

JamesSteele sounds like he just read off a Donald Trump speech.

2002 and 2003 were the shits because HHH beat everyone to a pulp, got rid of the IC title because he only wanted the World Title to matter and forced everyone to listen to 25 minute promo segments. Also the ratings tanked because he was so bad.

He's realistically a Hardcore Holly level heel

XL 05-09-2020 10:04 AM

2000 HHH was fucking amazing, he had great matches at Rumble/NWO, Backlash and Judgment Day (vs Rock), Fully Loaded (vs Jericho), SummerSlam (vs Rock & Angle), Unforgiven (vs Angle), and No Mercy (vs Benoit). It went sideways with Austin’s return.

If I recall correctly HHH himself described a “Marquee Name” as someone who’s name alone (I.e. without an opponent) brings people in. He was trying to get there, I don’t think he did.

His reputation is that he’s the guy that works with the guy that gets people through the door. He’s been great in that role.

Seanny One Ball 05-09-2020 10:13 AM

My entire memory of Triple H is teenage me wishing he wasn't always in the main event.
Triple H being force fed to me is one of the reasons I was so happy when Kurt Angle came on the scene. You now had a way better heel who was also a way better athlete.

Triple H was definitely a good wrestler and his matches were never too bad but everyone got bored of him as a main eventer because his place was as a jockish anti-hero in DX.
I never wanted to see anyone chase Triple H for the belt because I didn't think beating him was a big deal. They oversold him, tried to make him way too evil to be taken seriously.

Didn't he break JR's arm or was that Austin in a weird heel moment?

Seanny One Ball 05-09-2020 10:17 AM

I will say that he was given some fucking great angles though. Stuff that would have been better for someone else but that I have very fond memories of.

That best of 5 matches to get a title shot angle is possibly my favourite non PPV show ever.
I couldn't have enjoyed that if the matches and the atmosphere were off in any major way.

I still think that angle would have been dynamite for Foley, Austin or The Rock though. A one night, 5 match run against 5 main eventer just to earn a shot at the belt. A heel running the gauntlet seems odd.

Ol Dirty Dastard 05-09-2020 10:21 AM

His 2000 was great. One year, that's it.

Seanny One Ball 05-09-2020 10:23 AM

What year was his iron-man with Rock in? I liked that one.
I think he nearly got a fall with a fucking sleeper hold.

Seanny One Ball 05-09-2020 10:27 AM

Apparently that was 2000 and he did get a fall with a sleeper.
That match was tits. I need to see it again.

Ol Dirty Dastard 05-09-2020 10:38 AM

Even then, as great years go... he wouldn't have been shit without the Rock being there. HHH, at his best, is an effective supporting cast member.

Danny Electric 05-09-2020 11:24 AM

Watching it when I was younger I always wanted to see him lose and that is because he was playing the heel most the time. I remember his match against Jericho on Raw which I loved mainly because of being a massive Y2J mark and the hate I had for HHH when the decision was reversed.
To me he was the perfect foil at that time against Rock and Austin.

James Steele 05-09-2020 11:56 AM

...so he is the most effective heel in the history of professional wrestling? I agree.

Seanny One Ball 05-09-2020 12:37 PM

HOT TAKES!

COME GET YOUR HOT TAKES!

TEN FOR A PENNY!

Seanny One Ball 05-09-2020 12:39 PM

He probably is in the top ten though.

Lock Jaw 05-09-2020 12:45 PM

My fav Triple H was from when he was just starting all the "The Game" and "My Time" stuff, and had that feud with Cactus Jack.

XL 05-09-2020 12:48 PM

For the most part the issue with HHH isn’t in the ring, with a few exceptions (vs Steiner top of the list). It’s the amount of people cut off at the legs in order to keep him propped up.

Booker T, RVD, Kane all in a short spell. Now, these aren’t guys that were gonna lead to another boom period by any means, but they ended up being made less by these losses.

HHH was featured too much at the detriment of the product.

You can sell it as being a great heel, but I think there was a lot of “Go Away” heat mixed in there.

That’s what the Untold episode is about. Well worth a watch if you haven’t yet.

Lock Jaw 05-09-2020 12:49 PM

To be fair, RVD being cut off at the legs is best for all

XL 05-09-2020 12:52 PM

He was so fucking over at a number of occasions. I know you can point at what happened when he was given the push in the end.

GD 05-09-2020 01:09 PM

Stumbled upon DX vs Rated RKO from New Year's Revolution. Pretty sick injury.

Bad News Gertner 05-09-2020 02:09 PM

Remember when he killed Eugene dead in a matter of 2 weeks

Bad News Gertner 05-09-2020 02:09 PM

Or when he and HBK completely buried the Spirit Squad

Seanny One Ball 05-09-2020 02:43 PM

HBK never grew up.

I hate HBK.

I always have.

Seanny One Ball 05-09-2020 02:43 PM

Shawn Michaels was fucking amazing in The Rockers, but HBK can fuck right off

Seanny One Ball 05-09-2020 02:44 PM

It feels so good to finally say that.

Bad News Gertner 05-09-2020 02:48 PM

Remember when Rock pinned Vince to win HHH's title in June 2000 in that 6 man so HHH wouldn't have to get pinned

Bad News Gertner 05-09-2020 02:50 PM

Remember that feud between Foley and HHH in 2000 that stretched from January till Wrestlemania where HHH pinned Foley about a dozen times and left Foley laid out on multiple occasions and Foley didn't win a single match.

Bad News Gertner 05-09-2020 02:52 PM

Remember when HHH was the only wrestler allowed to have long hair on the Raw roster

Nick Dinsmore really overachieved with that gimmick...getting a SummerSlam singles bout of it.

Bad News Gertner 05-09-2020 02:53 PM

Remember when Edge refused to move to the Raw roster because of HHH

I was always a Bret guy. Shawn just reeked of insincerity. Mad skills though.
