The Batman - 8/10
Was pretty enjoyable... for as long as it was it kept me engaged and interested throughout.... want to watch it again, but then after that not sure about it's "rewatchability factor"... think Dark Knight Trilogy still edges it out there... |
Mississippi Masala - 6/10

I was ok with it.... wasn't like I was going to be disappointed if he was in it less or anything.... but was not disappointed by him being in it as much as he was either....
|
I thought he was a scene stealer. particularly when he’s being a smart ass to Gordon and Batman. Also loved Gordon. Fuck it I loved everyone.
|
West Side Story (2021) - 6/10
Was alright... a few catchy numbers and some good choreography, but the love story was real naff. |
pretty harsh but i respect it

Turning Red: 3 and 1/4 stars out of 4.
OK, I'm clearly not the target demo for this film but there are enough elements that resonate. It loses a bit of luster since we've seen this kind of story and lesson before in other films. Hell, Pixar pretty much did it with Finding Nemo. The catch is it's done in a fun way that lets it stand on its own. There are some legit funny moments in this and it's good to see Pixar continue with these kinds of small scale stories. The side characters are great, especially the circle of friends of the lead. There's at least one of those kinds of people in everyone's group. I don't think it needed the climax that it had but it's fine. It still doesn't crack the top five as far as Pixar films go but worth a watch. |
Spiderman: No Way Home 8.5/10
The strongest MCU (yeah yeah, it's a Sony film) outing since Infinity Wars/Endgame. |
The Death Of Stalin - 7/10

Turning Red - 7/10
Was alright. Was PrettyCool to see a film set in Toronto and really embracing it rather than the usual "filmed in Toronto but being presented as another city even when I recognize places" that is common in live action movies..... Nice @ being set in the past just so they could still call it Skydome..... |
Repo Man - 10/10
|
Repo repo repoooo man
|
The Power of the Dog - 6/10
The film has remarkably little to say so I'll say remarkably little about it |
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III - 6/10
Wasn't as bad as I was expecting, or maybe since my expectations were super low I didn't mind as much. Mega 90s kids movie vibes. |
I remember rooting for Yoshi solely because of Mario

Took me a while to realize you weren't talking about Hamato Yoshi. I've done extensive work to try to erase as much as I can about that film from my memory.
|
The Tender Bar - 7/10
very much an actors film. everyone is good and keep you into it throughout. |
The Batman 8.5/10
It is bum-numbing long, but I was digging everything about it. Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, the cityscape, the overall vibe. I liked them going the detective route, rather than just another bombastic blockbuster. It looks like they might be setting up the Joker for the next film, but I hope they don't; do something interesting with one of the more obscure members of Batman's rogues gallery instead. |
I think its more likely that we will see the Joker in the third installment.
|
I feel like we might see a no man’s land/Arkham city style story given the city is underwater and things are wide open
|
X- 8/10
Ti West continues to be one of my favorite horror directors. Like all his stuff this one is building to something and it takes it's time getting to the splatter...but it's a damn good trip there. Easily the best cinematography he's had yet, very fun soundtrack too. If ya watch it, stay tuned through the credits because it does something no other A24 horror film has done SPOILER: show |
Turning Red-8/10
Funny coming of age movie about a little girl in Canada who inherits a family curse of turning into a red panda. This movie was clearly geared for preteens, discursively girls, and the typical jokes are hilarious and were unexpected. It’s also very zany in a way Disney movies usually aren’t. Was getting anime vibes from how expressive the characters were. Loved it. |

SPOILER: show |
Lights Out-7/10
PG13 horror movie that does a good job of being really creepy despite not having much gore and minimal body count. Movie about a mental ill mother who’s just two husbands, and has somehow summoned a shadow demon that cannot attack unless there’s no light. |
UHF - 6/10

How did Denis Villeneuve not get a best director nomination for “Dune”…
Getting “Dune” right should have its own award. |
Tick Tick Boom sucked more ass than the guy it was about
|
Garfield really does need to get a new agent.
Or just start reading the screenplays before he commits to the project. |
yr mum sucks ass
|
Unlikely, she won’t even eat lamb.
|
Charlie Bartlett - 5.5/10
|
Watching the Nic Cage revenge movie Mandy. This thing is bonkers. Like if an acid trip was a movie.
|
Big fan of Mandy
|
‘Twas very weird. In an interesting way. The second hour is great. Just non stop Nic Cage vengeance, spewing bloody violence everywhere. I’m glad I didn’t watch it while high.
|
Mandy-7/10
|
Memento- 8/10
clever premise. good execution. supporting cast really outshines Guy Pearce who i think really holds the film back. if you do this film with a better lead it probably ends up nolans best work. SPOILER: show |
Memento is still in my top 10 of all time. Fantastic movie.
|
Watching Blazing Saddles for the first time.
|
Memento is Nolan’s best film and I love Guy Pearce in it. That’s Guy Pearce at his very best.

Block Island Sound-7/10
Sci-fi thriller that never quite gives you the big monster you would think it’s hinting at, but it’s good and the ending brings it to a nice finish. Antlers-7/10 Possessed monster movie about as kid hiding a secret in a drug riddled Oregon town. Sad but effective |
The Bubble - 6/10
the social commentary is good. taking a piss out of both the film industry and covid is refreshing. hopefully we will look back on the last two years like this film does with utter disdain and complete mockery of everything we did and were subjected to. i enjoyed Gillan and Pascal quite a bit. that said for a 2 hour comedy most of the gags didnt land and its a bit of a mess that doesnt know how to end, a point the film is aware of and might make for an unintentional allegory. lots of good cameos though...still ultimately this is basically Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back complete with dick jokes and weed humor. Apatows best work might be behind him. |
Apatow’s best work was behind him ten years ago at least.
Probably closer to fifteen. |
i really enjoyed his show Love (2016-2018) and i hear the king of staton island (2020) stands aside his best work but i cant stand the lead so ive never given it time
|
Blazing Saddles - 7/10

Jackass Forever 9/10
Love this franchise so much |
Dune. 9/10 although I probably would have liked it less in the theatre since I haven't read the books and wouldn't have had the benefit of pausing and rewinding.
Really inspiring visually and I appreciated the slow-moving story because it gave me a chance to just enjoy the vastness of the world. |
The Purge Election Year
These movies are pretty dumb but the politics are interesting. The big oversight seems to be that you should just leave the country on Purge night, ofc of course thats not possible for everyone and would highlight the classist element of the whole thing etc, but if they include the part about people visiting the country for "murder tourism" you'd think they'd address people fleeing as well |
The Night House-7/10
Rebecca Hall plays widow after her husband commits suicide. Her lake house gets creepy and she starts to feel what she thinks is her husband’s spirit but soon realizes it’s something else calling to her. |
The First Purge
The scale of this purge is smaller so they deal with the idea of people fleeing (via the govt giving them 5000$ if they stay)... again the politics are interesting as its direct violence targeted twds lower class people. But once you get halfway through the movie its pretty much just people shooting each other |
Fresh - 5.5/10

The Exorcist-8/10
Was scared shitless of this movie growing up. I was raised very Catholic. Went to church, was baptized, got my first communion, confirmation, etc. I watched this the first time when I was 12 or so and the idea of possession and the devil was very real to me, and I’ve avoided a rewatch for years. But the misses wanted to watch it so we threw it on. It’s a slow burn to start, but I love the story slowly progressing and breaking down the mom’s attempts at logical, scientific and sensible reasons as to why her daughter’s going insane, only to give in to worsening desperation to seek out the church. I also love how the movie doesn’t beat you over the head with religion. Father Damien, great name, is losing his faith to start the film and admits as much to a fellow priest. And even when he’s confronted with Regan being possessed, he still tries to be logical until it’s undeniable, and of course that’s where he finds his faith and purpose again for just a few fleeting moments. The movie isn’t scary in a traditional sense. Non believers or non religious people, like myself these days, won’t get scared. But it’s still very disturbing, the scenes of Regan slowly losing herself are great and disturbing and the medical stuff we see her go through are scary and claustrophobic in their own right. |
Everything Everywhere All at Once - 8.5/10
Was PrettyCool and PrettyWeird. :y: |
Adam Project: 5/10
I expected very little and my expectations were met. Had the potential for a higher grade (a respectable 6) if it laid a little bit off the schmaltz but it was heavy-handed in that department. And Ryan Reynolds's schtick outside of being Deadpool is PLAYED. Mark Ruffalo was a delight as usual, though, and Jennifer Garner is pleasant on the eyes to this day. |
Venom 2: 4/10
i have thoughts but im too tired. awful. |
Quote:
Transporting a super powered prisoner that they know has deadly vocal powers and they just throw her in the back of a van in handcuffs? And then are surprised when she immediately uses her powers to escape? Fucking what? |
ive never watched a movie thats so rushed where im thankful for it. nothing is built in a meaningful way in this entire film. no arc climaxes in a way that resonates. and im glad. because if this ran any longer than 90min id fucking kill myself.
oh and the cgi budget was so cheap the cw shows could mock it |
the biggest laugh of the film was when i saw tom hardy had a writing credit
|
I still enjoy the personality of the symbiote and its interactions with eddie.
I hope that transfers over to the mcu version. |
i hope there isnt an mcu version and the rumor suggests it wont. seems like after the recent spidey film theyre happy with bringing garfield back for amazing 3 and having eddie cross over with Garfield being eddies universes spider-man
|
Quote:
|
that can easily not connect back to its own cannon. that symbiot no longer knows who peter parker is. alls it has to do is find another host (mcu eddie for example) and move forward with a separate cannon
or just not get mentioned again. |
its a post credit scene in a movie no one saw after all
|
It was the post credit scene in No Way Home.
I don't care if it has its own canon. I just like the way the symbiote has its own voice. |
thats right the tied no way home and venom 2s post credit together
|
it still would have to be its own seperate entity at this point
|
Watched all the conjuring movies. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are great in all of them. The first one is god damn stellar. Wasn’t expecting an exorcism. The third act where the possession stuff really kicks in is great. Second one felt like the stakes were significantly lower. The third one gets closer to a return to form, IMO. Stakes felt higher, the movie itself was scarier, and I enjoyed the story more than the second one.
I read a sequel may be in the works. Feel like it’s been diminishing returns since the first one but I kinda want to see these two in more adventures. |
Pathetic Wilson
|
finishing returns
|
God dammit. That’s what I get trying to type while being high as a kite.
|
he's Pathetic Wilson from now on which is a shame because i quite like him
|
Typos are forever the gift that keeps on giving.
|
I like Patrick Wilson as well. But it’s true, pathetic Wilson is great.
|
Just saw that nicolas cage movie thats all about nicolas cage... The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent or something... kinda absurd but pretty brilliant... funny... good
|
Figured it would be
|
"everything everywhere all at once" was really heavy and there was a little too much going on... was cool though... kinda like the matrix X kirby X that shitty ass movie "Jumper". A lot of "statements" about "life" though... too much at times... felt dumb watching it

Encanto - 7/10
reallly difficult to land on a rating for this. most of what i enjoyed was the animation. its outstanding. tons of character in every frame. its great. as good as it gets really. the songs are mixed. some are good others weaker. none will stay with you a lifetime though. then there's the messaging. awful. no idea what the writier had against exceptionalism but as far as morals go i cant think of a worse thing to celebrate than complacency. archetypes are formed over millenia because theyve seperated the wheat from the chaff. this urge to throw away the evolution of human wisdom wont lead us anywhere good. Film shouldve been a 9 but the messaging is so bad i wanted to give it a 6. |
Destor reviewing Encanto seems like such a weird moment in time for me for some reason. Not the content of the review, it's a pretty damn fair assessment. Just that this review even exists. Bizarre.
|
I found myself more interested in the message/story of her sisters than Mirabel.....
I liked the songs. |

Yeah that actually makes sense now, I stopped equating animated films like this to musicals once Disney and the copycats quit making their old style of animated films every year. Basically when all animated films were musicals.

Side note: Out of all the animated movie songs ever, there has always been one that stuck in my head more than any other, and it's surprisingly not Disney. This conversation has got it in my head on repeat now. Soooommmmmeeeewwwwhhhhheeerrrreeee outtttt tthhhheeerrrrreeeee. Fievel Mousekewitz is my dawg. |
Don Bluth had a stretch there for awhile where he was making some high level animated movies that rivaled Disney imo.
|
I dont say this lightly: An American Tail is a masterpiece
|
He KILLED it in the 80's. Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, All Dogs Go To Heaven.

I'm gonna watch these movies with my kids tomorrow. I feel like a failure for forgetting to expose them to these classics.

I generally prefer the songs in Encanto to the ones in Moana..... but Moana does have the best and most memorable song out of the two movies...

i can def tap my toes to encanto but it doesnt have what it takes to take up permanent residency in the canon of my mind. which isnt to say its bad. in the slightest. it just isnt great. it isnt EXCEPTIONAL. the irony of that is pretty rich tbh. |
