Here we go.

Lock Jaw 07-10-2020 06:38 PM

HBO Max announced that it has given a "series commitment" to a show about the Gotham Police Department, from The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves, and Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter.

Said that it will "launch a shared universe across multiple platforms"

Nark Order 07-11-2020 10:44 AM

Dunno. Feel like of theyre going to put time and money into a DC show, they have so many options. Lots of concepts I would choose before a show about Gotham PD.

Swamp Thing
Deadman
The Terrifics
Static Shock
Lobo
Teen Titans
JSA
Hawkman/Hawkgirl
Suicide Squad
Nightwing
Super Sons

slik 07-11-2020 12:26 PM

I think I read Adam Strange is getting an HBO show too....only two issues into his miniseries from Tom King but so far, so good...really enjoy Tom King as a writer.

Lock Jaw 07-11-2020 01:13 PM

Hourman currently on the Stargirl show, but.... I always wanted to make a gritty/dark version of Hourman.... yeah, I know gritty/dark from DC movies is kind of a cliche, but....

Just think a movie/show about some dude..... who just wants to leave his mark on the world and help people.... but then ends up getting addicted to the drug he created, and the adrenaline of being a hero, and increasingly gets more desperate as his body becomes acclimated and he constantly tweaks his formula, ignoring his own wife and son in favour of his own pursuits...

Lock Jaw 07-11-2020 01:21 PM

Now that I mention Stargirl.... a Starman show would have been "dope"

slik 07-11-2020 02:16 PM

slik 07-11-2020 02:17 PM

Truly amazing. Like, really good.

I'm a bit biased because I'm a huge fan but the general consensus was also that it was magnificent.

RP 07-11-2020 08:57 PM

narc hacked?

They also won't have to worry about continuity, as all OGNs take place in their own, contained universe. DC recently signed a big deal with book publishing magnate Penguin Books, who will help market and distribute all future OGNs.

BleedingCool.com speculates if monthly comics exist in a few years, it will be less titles and likely all digital release only.

I can see why

Driven by continued growth in popularity of the graphic novel format, combined sales of graphic novels and periodical comics in the U.S. and Canada totaled roughly $1.21 billion in 2019, according to a joint estimate produced by trade news sites ICv2 and Comichron. The $1.21 billion estimate represents an 11% increase over total comics and graphic sales in 2018.

The increase in sales was led by the graphic novel book format, in particular continued growth in sales of children's graphic novels, sold via the bookstore channel, which includes chain bookstores, online retailers, mass market stores, and Scholastic Book Fairs. And while the book format led sales growth overall, sales of periodical comics in the comics shop market were also up by about 5%.

"The massive shift to graphic novels as the preferred format for comics continued in 2019, bringing sales in the book channel above the comic store channel in North America for the first time in the history of the medium," ICv2 CEO Milton Griepp said of the findings.

In 2019, North American sales of the graphic novel format were about $765 million, while sales of periodical comics were about $355 million, with sales of digital comics at about $90 million.

Hero books down 9%. Manga and children's comics up.

We talked about this already but graphic novels are definitely the way to go.

Destor 07-14-2020 06:23 PM

Long form novels > monthly serials

slik 07-14-2020 06:42 PM

From the newest issue of DEATH METAL

People will either like this or hate it I have a feeling...Alan Moore will probably hate it.

Kalyx triaD 07-14-2020 06:49 PM

...

What the fuck is going on?!

Destor 07-14-2020 07:09 PM

Thanks. I hate it.

slik 07-14-2020 08:52 PM

I like it, but am also cautious via Scott Snyder's tendency to go ultra-esoteric-cosmic and then not really follow up or follow through.

Like two issues from now that character could be totally different is what I mean. I remember it seeming like a huge deal when Sandman was in Darkest Knight: METAL but then nothing really happened with it.

I take Perpetua's words to mean

SPOILER: show

She'll get offed soon and the rest of her race of beings will become the new big bad, alongside The Darkest Knight

Damian Rey 2.0 07-14-2020 11:00 PM

Well that was weird but my gawd I could look at Capullo's art all day.

Lock Jaw 07-16-2020 02:37 PM

There was a new Rorscach is Doomsday Clock. The son of the psychiatrist who visited him in prison or something

Kalyx triaD 07-16-2020 02:38 PM

Doesn't even matter anymore, bro. Current universe was the result of Dr Manhattan being bored. It's all kitchen sink now.

The last time I knew of any actual advertisement for the Marvel app that didn't pop up online while I was actively researching something about a Marvel character out of conversational need or random curiosity was, and I shit you not, an OTA radio spot. Something about that felt off for what they're trying to do. Like the next step is to hire a street team in random cities to staple flyers to phone poles like 90s rap concerts to completely miss your audience.

So, exactly the same issue I'm having with Disney+... I want to watch the new episodes of the new Ducktales (so good), but I can't, because D+ only has through season 2... season 3 is on that Disney XD, which is free but you have to be watching in conjunction with a cable subscription to unlock the service. Not fooling with any of that is exactly the reason why I have Disney+, and it makes no sense to me why you'd have two different streaming services (as a company, I mean, not as a subscriber) with different content.

Which was apparently already not the original cut, so I guess I don't want that either (but I'd take it over what they got now).

I have a particular DVD set of the original trilogy with the original films on them like a "bonus feature" (and I think they all have the same demo of the first LEGO Star Wars... have to go back and look). The sound is intentionally mono crippled, and its in black bar 4:3 instead of theatrical widescreen, but unless you go completely old school and hunt down the final release of the widescreen VHS set, Indy, that's about as good as it is going to get.

Darkseid by way of 'Rapey Office Manager' is pretty next level.

slik 08-10-2020 07:21 PM

The WarnerMedia shakeup which saw Kevin Reilly, who brought AEW to TNT, let go has now crept into DC Comics.

Sounds like DC Editorial getting massive layoffs:

https://bleedingcool.com/comics/afte...for-dc-comics/

With so many staff leaving the company, around a third it is estimated, the continual production of comic books is likely to take a hit, but the graphic novel line, which has become more valuable to DC, is so far in advance of production, that no one would notice until well into 2021.

We also hear about what is described as a Two-Year Plan for DC Comics which will see DC Comics move to mass-market production through Walmart, the licensing of titles with editors moving to brand manager roles, alongside a move from DC to digital serialisation and original graphic novels. Content will still be provided to the direct market but it will no longer be the priority that it (still) is at DC Comics.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">I’d say it’s 50-50 whether DC Comics is still publishing monthly periodicals for the direct market in 2 years.</p>&mdash; Chase Magnett (@ChaseMagnett) <a href="https://twitter.com/ChaseMagnett/status/1292981054819762176?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 11, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-conversation="none"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">It’s also worth noting that DC’s “creator leadership” group was already experiencing forms of consolidation as King, Snyder, and Johns have all signaled—to different extents—they are stepping back from the core superhero line.</p>&mdash; Chase Magnett (@ChaseMagnett) <a href="https://twitter.com/ChaseMagnett/status/1293002277305724928?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 11, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
