Some of their games were great. Others, not so much.

I wonder if they're gonna put everything up for sale as one whole package. Or part it out like when THQ folded.

Probably a mix of both. Their bigger games can fetch a decent sum on their own and then toss in the rest as a package deal based on the level of interest for them.

Supposedly they never made a good profit on any of their episodic games besides Walking Dead Season 1 and one other game. Their licensed games bombed a lot more for revenues.

IKR? It's like, finish TWD: The Final Season and then if you shut down you wouldn't have as many people up in arms because you're leaving quite probably your best-selling game series on an abrupt cliffhanger with only a few episodes to go.

Hopefully they do get to finish that and it doesn't just go the way of Swordquest.

Stranger Things seemed like a property tailor made for Telltale.

Lastly, and more disappointly for me, their shuttering means no more Poker Night. A third installment could have been awesome if they continued to keep the humor tight and the crossover participants eclectic. Could totally see Rick Sanchez at a table either as a participant or replacing Reginald and GLaDOS as dealer. Ah, what could have been...

The #1 problem was terrible management demanding more TWD games. Couple that with the fact that only 2 or 3 of their games ever made them a profit and the disaster gumbo really comes to a boiling point.

Also being rumored that those same employees either have or are in the process of filing a class-action suit against the company, as in violation of the Warren Act, TTG did not give 30 days advance warning of layoffs which involved more than 50 employees.

But hey, it's not like those employees have families to try and provide for or anything, right?

Kalyx triaD 09-28-2018 11:36 PM

Think Destor was playing with the idea of licensed games being a weakness of theirs when their whole gimmick was story based explorations of known brands. He passed no ill will to the employees.

Though if only so many games made profit then I'd say their days were numbered regardless.

Destor 09-29-2018 12:04 AM

Exactly.

The issue was always only TWD game made any money so when a licensed IP failed (GoT for example) it cost a TON of money and with no IPs of their own...well here we are.

They have no money to pay anyone anything.

Destor 09-29-2018 12:04 AM

Twitch hurt them more than i think anyone will ever know.

Kalyx triaD 09-29-2018 12:15 AM

Which actually relates to my long stated points about the weakness of narrative based games vs open-ended replayable games and multiplayer. If a YouTube vid or longplay stream can subvert 80% of the experience, we're looking at a dying breed of game.

Meanwhile, it still leaves many former employees of TTG trying to find some way to support their families, not to mention these employees will likely be in the same boat unless Skybound feels really magnanimous and miraculously keeps them all on board in full or part-time positions.

Now I realize it's probably only another small fraction of the employees but I can't help but think the folks that worked on TFtB would be a great fit for Gearbox to hire to fill some vacancies in working on Borderlands 3.

Cloud based gaming. Will never. Take off. Too many genres require perfect or very little input delay. Unless they're installing fiber cables for every subscriber, every game will feel like playing online games with yellow bars.

Tom Guycott 10-09-2018 01:49 AM

The last time I tried any cloud based service was the one compatible with OUYA (I think it was Playcast?)... it was surprisingly able to handle shit like Arkham Asylum (cutting edge for the time) input wise, BUT the big albatross there was PS1 era loading times on any transition. In a world where that has pretty much gone away thanks to mandatory installs, having to wait around for 15-20 seconds every time you go through a door or trigger a cutscene gets old really quickly. Something larger with a lot of moving parts in an area- or worse, a game where the area itself has a metric ton to load - will be like trying to go back and play Mortal Kombat on Sega CD.

Tom Guycott 10-09-2018 01:54 AM

... and also, I meant for fun.

My job went from having a local server to a corporate hosted, cloud-based network, and it has sucked copious amounts of ass ever since. It's super slow even when working "properly", and heaven forbid the site go down or the internet peter out on either end (usually theirs). Sony recently confirmed reports of them working on an upcoming update for PSN allowing the ability to change your username on the service.

Similar to Microsoft, the first name change will be free and then $9.99 for each change made afterwards. Not sure if Microsoft gives a discount for Gold members but Sony is offering a 50% discount for PS+ members who want to change their name after the first time.

Although there is a huge kicker and a big reason why Sony waited soo long to actually do this. This is only compatible for PS4 games and only for those released after April due to how usernames were programmed into PSN.

Here's the kicker, because with Sony there usually is one: the name change won't actually work for every game. Sony says the feature is "only compatible with PS4 games originally published after April 2018." They say that not all games and apps will support the ID change (what?) and that "errors may occur." During the preview program you can revert back if the errors are so busted that you can't use programs correctly. Sony will provide a list of supported ID change games (again, this is bizarre that it doesn't just work universally, and a glimpse into Sony's odd infrastructure).

November 2018 is the planned date for the preview program with a full roll out in "early 2019."

Ultra Mantis 10-12-2018 10:26 PM

A couple of my friends have shitty PSN ID's because they were both too impatient to come up with a unique handle they actually liked and instead mashed random characters and numbers. Neither of them care about trophies and they both could have changed to a new account with a better name at any point with no real loss but they haven't, I guess because it really doesn't matter whatsoever what your name is.

It's a vocal minority that give a fuck about cross play, and a majority of that minority just like having something to be mad about.

"But I want to play Fortnite on my Switch and my XBONE and my PC too and now I'm going to have to unlock my arbitrary character customisation options all over again! Fuck Sony!"

Most people who play online with friends tend to all gravitate towards the same console in the first place. Outside of the Dark Souls family I don't really play online and I really could not care less if I can summon somebody cross platform.

Emperor Smeat 10-12-2018 11:18 PM

1 million is way too generous of an estimate but Sony's poor handling of cross-platform play and PSN account stuff absolutely could have led to lingering negative effects going into the next Playstation console. Especially when you had Bethesda threatening to pull future multi-platform support for Sony consoles and Epic publicly blaming Sony for the Fortnite account controversy.

Main reason why PS4 has such a strong dominance over the Xbox One was due to the blunders Microsoft carried over from the Xbox 360 gen and the early blunders with the Xbox One. Combine that with Sony learning from their lessons with the PS3 and improving their rep, it turned what could have been a close XBox One vs PS4 race into a blowout win for Sony.

Kalyx triaD 10-13-2018 05:09 AM

Like seriously I do not think cross platform play is a serious issue for general gamers. Not even close.

Does a general gamer usually have one system? It might be an issue that only general games care about.

According to a report from Engadget, Epic Games is currently suing two known Fortnite Youtube players due to them advertising hacking software for the game in their videos and for using it during matches to help promote sales.

As part of the lawsuit, Youtube was also asked to pull down all the Fortnite videos from the channel involved.

This is also the second time Epic Games has sued players for selling hacking software for the game.

Eh, they were close this time. Problem was most of the "games" they released were glorified tech demos and not even close to being worth 65 bucks.

Resident Evil 7 showed it has great potential.

Kalyx triaD 10-22-2018 07:22 PM

Even that's a console game tacked on to VR.

VR never had a Killer App ever. It's been hype for decades now. The recent resurgence was all based on the graphics being better than Lawnmower Man now, but that's not enough.

VR games are not good. And the better ones are never native to VR. It's been over two decades; it's utility just isn't gaming.

ClockShot 10-22-2018 07:54 PM

Jade Raymond went to EA, created her own studio, and is gone in like a couple years.

Same thing happened with Amy Hennig.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Emperor Smeat 10-22-2018 09:00 PM

VR still has some big potential in gaming but probably down to just Nintendo, Valve, and Naughty Dog to pull out the killer app for it any time soon. Those three companies have enough bright minds to really think outside the box or create the memorable experience needed for VR's "Super Mario 64" moment.

Kalyx triaD 10-23-2018 03:52 AM

Why would they, tho?

Destor 10-23-2018 09:35 AM

To bring something new and lasting to gaming or the next big money maker like PUBG and Fortnite for recent stuff.

Based on past history, Nintendo is more likely to make it work for controls or gameplay-wise, Valve for engine or tech-wise, and Naughty Dog for narrative or experience-wise. All depends if or when they ever get serious about VR gaming.

Think Valve was rumored for a while about seriously considering making a new Half-Life game revolving around their VR tech.

"New and lasting" is an amorphous goal that's almost never an actual motivation. I think you're conflating the public or even cultural response to a smash hit game with the honestly simple beginnings of a project. Nobody making Fortnite or Dark Souls was thinking "we're gonna change everything". Every game starts from the same place, maybe leaning toward the financial or artistic at times, but never with such a specific ideal as to be profound.

Companies arrogant enough to actually express this goal tend to set up their own failure.

As far as being a money maker you should keep in mind that we're talking about a video headset apparatus with bleeding edge tracking tech that after 2 decades hasn't managed a single killer app despite many attempts from very smart developers and game jams. I'd dare to say not a single commercially released VR game made good on its investment. Not one.

Oddworld I think holds up but early 3d games have aged the poorest I think. You can still play SNES and most of up it totally holds up. May be simple but its clean. N64 and PS1 era is rough (ROUGH) on the eyes and im not a graphics gamer at all.

1st party nintendo titles had a level of polish that shouldnt have been possible given the lack of experience and the mechanical limitations of the hardware.

Persona vanilla is probably horribly HORRIBLY dated but it's the only title on the classic I kind of want to play just out of morbid curiosity.

Creative vision and leadership.

Destor 10-29-2018 07:53 PM

Time is a major factor as well. In house development starts much earlier than 3rd party so to prepare a game for launch a 1st party title might have as much as an extra 30% lead time.

But i agree with you completely.

Ape Escape & MediEvil are the only ones that seem to fit the bill. They used characters from both in that PS3 smash clone. Seems weird neither are on this actually.
