EA just spend up things by trying to go to the next step with Battlefront II. Even if they didn't, Valve was going to cause it to happen due to their own recent gambling scandal with CS:GO. The 'studies' are social science bullshit, the same type of studies that tried to say games can cause sexism/racism/violence.
These things are products and the loot box situation should have been a convo between gamers and publishers. It is beyond why you thing setting precedent that govt can legislate in-game content given every past attempt ever. Particularly somebody who follows the industry. Not two months ago Trump was putting a mass shooting onto the game industry, and here we are welcoming govt regulation like these subject will never intertwine ever. And why? I doubt they're going to. Kingdom Hearts remasters came out for PS3, then they remastered them for PS4 in the 1.5 & 2.5 double pack over a year ago, then remastered the 3DS game and added some other stuff in Kingdom Hearts 2.8 and they've done nothing for XBox.

A good ways into God of War, and I can safely say it has been overhyped by game journalists. It is not the life changing, industry redefining experience they are making it out to be.
BUT, it is not overrated. This is a very, very, VERY good video game. Good enough that I feel confident saying nothing else this year will top it, and it has essentially clinched GOTY. |
Only thing that will be able to challenge it is RDR 2, provided it doesn't get delayed again.
|
Might wanna hold off and wait for Red Dead 2 to come out.
But I agree, God of War is great. Buddy on my friends list is just flying through it and I'm taking my sweet, sweet time discovering every nook and crany. |
I mean it's Rockstar, and it's Red Dead. It will be amazing and a sure fire GOTY candidate. But we have been there before. Could see GoW edging it out in part because it's world and characters are so fresh. Surprisingly, not a lot of games out there that explore Norse mythology.
Also, while Rockstar's gameplay always feels really good, it just doesn't have the depth of a game like God of War. All the different things you can do in a fight, as well as the more tactical approach this installment has taken, really make it hard for me to see Red Dead topping it from a gameplay perspective. |
There's alot coming out this year that looks ace but i hope its as good as advertised. Looks mad short which is always knock for my tastes but im excited to play it.
|
That's the other thing. Combat in previous God of War games always felt a bit floaty and weightless. Feels a lot heavier here. Everything move feels like it has weight to it. Even when you pop up and juggle some poor son of a bitch in the air.
Also, this game is a perfect example of why not every god damn video game has to be open world. It gives you lots to explore, while still keeping you focused on a linear path. The extremely well crafted narrative helps with that. I have so many open world games that I never finished. Not because I didn't enjoy them. I love the far cry games, assassins creed, shadow of war, etc. But their main narrative feels so uninspired and tacked on that I feel no compulsion to complete it before the next shiny new game drops. GoW gives you just enough to explore and get that sense of wonder with the game world, but pulls you back into the main quest line before it gets tedious. |
Old GoW were Hack n Slash games. This GoW isn't a Hack n Slash game. Very. Huge. Difference.
|
I'd be curious to hear your definition of hack and slash. Because by golly I sure have been doing a lot of hacking and or slashing.
|
Its still a hack and slash. It just isnt a devil may cry esq hack and slash
|
At best you can say its a beat em up/brawler but you gotta put your nerd cap on to draw out the difference
|
I mean you can certainly have different kinds of hack and slash. But the general definition isn't that specific. Pretty sure most people consider any action game that focuses primarily on melee weapon combat to be hack and slash.
|
Quote:
I would absolutely love to explain how my 3rd fave gaming genre works, why it works, and all the little historical nuggets that go with it. But as a TLDR for now: - Over the shoulder 'behind follow cam' is not conducive to Hack n Slash. There's a reason the perspective is often fixed leading to the genre's trademark stubborn camera angles. - The 'one player fighting game' input intensity of Hack n Slash is not because it wants to annoy casuals. Hack n Slash, like a fighting game, demands you operate within a rigid yet flexible sandbox of actions in often quick reflexive manners. Lots of fighting game tropes carry over to HnS because of this (frame data, punishes, stretching combos, etc). Modern GoW, while 'presentation wise' intensive, is not actually demanding in this way. It is strategic via effect states and other mechanics that do involve melee per se - but not HnS requirements. - This is NOT to say this GoW is more casual, there are many types of challenge in games. I am just saying in terms of genre (HnS) and sub-genre (western HnS), this game was obviously not built as a Hack n Slash game. It has almost none of the mechanical tropes related to the genre, and that's fine. Hell I only noted the distinction in the first place cause it's very urk'ful to me when people make direct comparisons between this and the old GoW. As a series, sure. Game mechanics? That's as jarring as comparing RE7 to the RE4; it's just a different ball game. All I'm sayin. |
Quote:
Mechanics mean something. They combine to make up the consistent tropes of a genre. |
Yeah like i said you gotta be a real dork to say theyre different. Double Dragon and Beyonetta are the same genre unless youre nit picky. Theyre just different takes. Would be like saying crash bandicoot is a dif genre than mario due to a distinct change in approach despite the core mechanic remaining the same.
Defeat enemies. Progress to next screen. Hit enemies till they die. Repeat. Needing intricate combos a genre does not make. Would be like saying mk1 and mk3 are different genres. Nit picky and arbitrary. HOWEVER if the point is conceded that it does make a dif genre then yes new GoW is not a hack and slash but in fact a beat em up. But its a rose by any other name. Also would make YAKUZA a hack a slash which just sounds weird and protest on principle |
At best we're talking sub genres
|
I really don't know how harsh 'dork' is supposed to be in this of all discussions.
Either I'm a complete dork for caring about how games are designed (for shame), or I'm in error and can't be that much of a 'geek'. I seriously do not get the 'dork' thing. We're talking games in a wrestling forum. Now for the rest of your post cause you're off on a few things. But before I commit to it, cause it's gonna be 'one of those Kalyx posts', a simple question: Do you care about genre distictions? That's not a value judgment question, you can love games however you want. But based on what you said about Bayo/DD, Mario/Crash, and Yakuza - I gotta know. Do you actually care about the design philosophy aspect of games? Again it's 100% fine if you just wanna buy a good time. |
Quote:
You can absolutely make unbiased, informative comparisons about the two. I only stated that attacks feel weightier and have more heft to them. Because they do. Never said one was better than the other. |
Dork shouldnt be harsh at all. Just a true statement. Is dork still negitive? I thought that passed in the 90s
|
I care about real genre distinctions and not subgenre distinctions as there is no fucking limit to how retarded those convos get. No diff than arguing sub genres of metal.
Worst. Topic. Ever. |
Subgenre debates boil down to the guy with the most annoying fandom for a thing describing how his grain of sand is different because of some nuance that matters to him makes it TOTALLY DIFFERENT.
A genre is never about minor details. Horror and comedy. Not horror and slasher or worse slasher vs splatter |
Quote:
|
I didn't say you did.

- If he complains, chastise him for being totally outdated. Quote:
Quote:
But I'm gonna lean on the side of your face that doesn't care and save it. |
Quote:
But going back to my original point; GoW can't feel heavier because there is no prequel. It is mechanically a new game. The comparisons would be more broad (like comparing Mario Kart to Gran Turismo as general racing games). But more specific comparisons could be made between Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing. |
You are literally the only person who looked at that statement and thought that.
Everyone else thought "Oh, that's interesting. Thank you for giving me an example of how this God of War video game differs from other God of War video games." Because you are weird. |
Everyone except Triple A.
He probably read that and started thinking about guac. |
before his thoughts were interrupted by Croatians.
|
If that's weird than this simply isn't the place to discuss that sort of thing.
|
it's kinda weird. But there's nothing wrong with being weird. I'm pretty weird too.

The idea of Beyond Skyrim is awesome. But they've taken too long and are nowhere near completion. By the time they finish it, if they finish it, ES6 will most likely be out and no one will care.
Besides it's basically just single player ESO. If you want to see large portions of Tamriel in game form, that's your best bet. I played it for awhile and that game is freaking HUGE. |
As they said in the video, Morrowind and Oblivion still have a very active mod scene and player base, so I don't think ES:6 will stop the project or kill interest.
Don't really care for the gameplay in ESO. Plus, thee enviornments lack the finer details that you see in skyrim. Unlike Ronda Rousey's vagina of course. |
Ftr they said morrowind has an active mod scene. Oblivions is dead and they said as much.
Morrowinds live on because he community around it believes its the greatest game of all time. The only major TES4 mod still going is the morrowind mod and that doesnt have any progress really. Skyrim, like oblivion, will dwindle after TES6 drops. |
Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon finally got a release date. May 24th next week. $9.99. It's a spin off of the upcoming Ritual of the Night.
But, if you're one of those who kicked in $28 or more in kickstarter, you get it for free. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UlDq0FQS15o" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> https://www.playstationtrophies.org/...y-Release.html |

Played it at a friends house. Didn't buy it myself, so I guess I'm part of the problem lol.
I think it was just bad timing for the release. Like, disgustingly bad timing. That was really the reason why I didn't purchase it. Despite how fun it was, you could see from a mile away that the servers would be empty in a couple months. |
Much better Rage 2 trailer
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/0H_Fsyje2nA" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> Never played the first one, but this looks to be similar to other Bethesda/id shooters like Doom and Wolfenstein which I enjoyed immensely, so I'll give it a try. |
