Reminds me of an excellent film called "Wrong" but with literal horror aspects thrown in.
It used that opening nature footage pretty perfectly even if it seemed heavy handed and a little overt. Starting to hope this doesn't go anywhere too definite. Leave me wondering about some stuff... |
Big Trouble in Little China 7/10
I've seen parts of it in the past, but never in its entirety. Silly 80s fun. |
Imogen Poots is incredible in "Vivarium".
I am going to need to watch a lot of comedy after this. This has used me up. |
Find Mom and Dad Save the World. Then tell me where I can watch it.

Vivarium - 3.5/4 House hunting goes badly wrong for an unwary, unwitting couple. The film opens with a nasty piece of repulsive nature and follows on with pastel coloured pop-art sets that look like they came straight out of a housing development flyer from the 50's. Peter Greenaway would love these sets, they look so plastic and blatant that they themselves supply a great element of unease to go with the immediately insidious storyline as well as the performance of the bizarre realtor. Not to give anything away at all(because the plot is so small and brilliant), this is a film about a situation nobody can do anything about. They have been put there, they are stuck there and making the best of it doesn't ever seem to be a truly viable option. Eisenberg always struck me best as a naturally neurotic character playing himself off as confident, which is a perfect reason to cast him here because he does it brilliantly and in an extremely restrained and far less verbose character than usual. He jumps from idyllic to insane pretty quickly in this film, or at least his actions would be criminally insane in any other environment outside of this one. Were I posting this on some turd website I'd suggest multiple trigger warnings for people who can't handle a bit of grit, but in the context it is completely essential to the tone. Man and woman begin to fall apart over the course of the movie due to the malignant influence of a terrible mystery. This is a film to think about because it explains so little and yet makes sense within its own rules and decisions. It isn't a strange film for the sake of it, it adheres to its own standards and makes the effort to give you something you can take as far as you want in your own imagination. This was pretty much the best film I could have seen after explaining why "Knives Out" bored me enough to turn it off. It made the effort to create a mystery, then it provided solid dialogue and story progression based on believable reactions to the premise. I very much enjoyed and was creeped out by "Vivarium", but be warned. There are a couple of moments in this film that could be described as "just fucking stupid" if it took you even slightly out of the movie. Luckily I was already too engrossed to care, however this is a distinct possibility with people who do not want anything particularly overt in an otherwise fairly complex little story about a nightmare in real life. Excellent performances from top to bottom in a tiny cast makes everything more impactful. The plot was clearly set, well paced and executed well enough to induce existential terror. I would advise anyone who has seen it or wants to see it to read the John Steinbeck short "Johnny Bear", watch the Quentin Dupieux film "Wrong" and have a look for Peter Greenaway's "Tulse Luper Chronicles" in any form you can find it in order to see similar set designs which surely had to have an impact on these. |

You click the big play button, not anything else.
That takes you to four links beneath the box where the video will play. Choose "server GAGA 4". If you want to watch movies online for free you're putting your system at risk anyway but clicking "read more" on a dodgy foreign website instead of the absolutely massive play symbol on the page is asking for trouble with no reward. |
Dunno, I found the play button way more suspicious I guess.
|
Just watched it. Felt a lot faster and "less eventful" than I remember. I still enjoyed it for the nostalgia.

Oh it was way past Mandy. Mandy was trying to be weird, good though it was. This is so weird it could almost be a Japanese film. |
Watching another Eisenberg/Poots joint called "The Art Of Self-Defense".
It has a very deliberate style of line delivery in it that makes each character seem like they came into the real world from a Wes Anderson film. Almost everyone is slightly off... no sincerity to over sincerity, monotone delivery of speeches that require passion... There are some incredibly funny lines that come purely from this style of delivery. Alessandro Nivola and Jesse Eisenberg play well with the tone. It has an odd, disingenuous quality to it. Very funny. |
"Poots" still a v entertaining name
|
The Grudge (reboot). 3/10. That's prob being generous. It's disjointed, incoherent, and not nearly as scary. V disappointed.
This movie smells like cheese. |
Watching aquaman.
The prologue is the origin of how aquaman got his powers and its hilarious because its literally "my parents fucked" |
Would you have preferred a flashback to a man's bare bum turning around to reveal his groin in a fish bowl?
|
What does it say about you if you say “yes”?
|
That you are the adventure
|
Was very early AM when I put The Art Of Self Defense on so I am finishing it today.
Eisenberg is wonderful in this. Poots owned Vivarium, he's all over this. I think Guru Dave would love the commentary on "toxic masculinity". |
Also this is the best part Alessandro Nivola has probably ever had.
|
Oh boy, this thing took quite a turn
|
I'm very glad I watched "The Ninth Configuration" before I saw this film. The midway switch from comedy to surreal drama is pretty amazing.
|
The Art Of Self Defense - 3/4
This was a lot of fun, and a lot of WTF. Kept me guessing. |
I have Jojo Rabbit and Vivarium on my Prime watchlist; I'm waiting until they get a bit cheaper before renting.
|
Some say Destor is still watching Aquaman to this day....

El Vaq, if you're gonna see it you might as well see it for free. |

Aquaman- 7/10 its good. 2nd best dc movie fairly easily. The script has some real issues mostly around having waaaaaaay too much to do. Several arcs resolve one scene apart. Film is ultra rushed. Also suffers from an overuse of sets even for "exteriors" and when they actually go on location theyre forced to use this wierd vasalene filter to keep a visual consistency. That said the characters shine bright and the action is among the best in the genre. Some of the jokes dont land but its enjoyable throughout and its world building (albiet very rushed) pays off in a satifying way. |
What is the best DC movie?
|
Careful research shows that Destor rated Wonder Woman 9/10, so I guess that.
|
Oh its easily Wondy yeah. Phenomenal.
|
If its not wonderowman... what is it?
|
I liked Aquaman more myself. Wonder Woman was great though.... and I admit nothing in Aquaman gives me goosebumps like the no man's land scene in Wonder Woman.
|
I prefer Shazam, it brought the fun back in bucket loads.
|
Least you two picked the only 2 other watchable dc films
|
Just wait until the Snyder Cut comes out!!! Wooooooo!!!!!1
|
Lol in similar news is birds of prey any good?
|
I thought it was a lot of good fun, but at the same time incredibly frustrating for choosing to make the little girl character Cassandra Cain.... but probably the majority of "casual fans" don't really care about that.
I'd watch it again. |
Mulan.
One of my favorite Disney movies and will be seeing the live action version just to trash it. |
The Hunt 7/10
A group of liberal elite hunt a group of "deplorables" (i.e people who would vote for the Republicans). Pretty much takes the piss out of both groups of people. If you leave your brain at the door, its a decent watch. |
"If you leave you brain at the door"
"To enjoy this you need to have had a lobotomy" |
You are good to go then. Enjoy! :y:
|
"I know you but what am i" used unironically by an adult
Lol |
Watching "Undercover Brother".
I am going to round up all of the comedy movies from the 90's/00's that had a major release but I never had a chance to see. Sadly a lot of these films will have a 5. rating on IMDB... |
Sweet, Dave Chappelle is in this.
|
Finally watched Aquaman.
It veered into Romcom territory almost too much with the scenes in the Sahara (the visuals for that were awful) and Sicily, but it was pretty good overall. My score: 8/10 Wife’s score: 8/10 |
Coyote Ugly.
It was alright. |
Watching a Lovecraftian horror called "Underwater".
It is astonishingly mediocre, I can't believe that the person who filmed this did so deliberately. This has to be an editing hatchet job. That doesn't really explain the totality of the deafness of tone. Nowhere near enough time has been spent on the rapport or lack of... Relationships with only exposition for proof are not relationships at all. I hope the Ctulhu beast at least looks good |
Vincent Cassel, Kristen Stewart and T.J Miller would be better in an Alexander Payne farce.
I'd love to see that. |
Annoying English bird in this needs to get dead real fast.
In a movie titled "Underwater" she is literally and figuratively out of her depth. |
Underwater - 2.5/4
The first half hour is a hot mess but the next half hour is good and tense followed by a pretty damned decent half hour of creepy shit happening under the sea. The Lovecraft beast was good too when I finally got a proper peek at it. Kirsten Stewart runs about in her underwear a lot so to be honest this was a lot more bearable than I thought it would be. |
The English one is crap though. They just wrote an annoying twat for no discernible reason.
Feminism maybe |
Much Ado About Nothing (1993) 6.7/10
It would have been a solid adaptation of the play if it was not for some rather poor casting choices (Keanu Reeves, Robert Sean Leonard; pretty much all the American actors); it is saved by the chemistry of Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson. |
Joss Whedon did my favorite adaptation of much adu a few years back. So good. Shot at his home over a weekend.
|
That was a decent adaptation, though I haven't seen it since I saw it at the cinema on its release.
|
I was in Much Ado About Nothing once playing the same role Keanu did, Don John, and all I heard through rehearsal was teasing from castmates about "Almost as good as Keanu"
Don't get me wrong, big fan of Keanu but no clue what they were thinking casting him in that role. |
He was the rising star of the time.
Denzel Washington, as Don Pedro, scrapes through on sheer charisma. |
Is there a Simpson's episode called Much Apu About Nothing? I bet there is.
|
There is too, season 7.
They really have done everything. |
The Layover.
Not very good but Kate Upton and Alexandria Daddario or however you spell it are both hot. |
Vice- 8/10
|
The Vast of Night 9.5/10
This is one of my new favorite movies. UFO type mystery drama set in the 50's. Just the way the story is presented and the general vibe of it comes off like old twilight zone. Didn't think it would be this good going in but I love it. Just something about it man. It's on Amazon Prime Video for anyone interested. |
I've been thinking of watching that actually, will definitely do so in the future now
|
I watched Ad Astra the other night, it was beautiful to look at but I didn't think much of the plot to be honest.
It felt like Event Horizon in a lot of ways. Not as good though. I think I'd give it 3/4 just for Brad Pitt and how pretty it was to look at. The beginning was scary as tits though, a fuckin ladder to space...argh |
365 Days-0/10
A dumb, senseless, directionless movie that serves as fantasy to only the loneliest, most thirsty of sexless women. A very young, handsome and muscular mobster almost dies in a deal gone wrong. He then makes it his mission to find, kidnap and win the love of a woman who he randomly saw for 2 seconds thru his car window. Once he's kidnapped her, the love interest makes a series of a dumb decisions as they try to tease sexualtension. The turning point where are finally breaks its really stupid. The movie itself doesn't even meet its own movie title. The movie has nudity galore, and 12 year old me would've loved all the scenes where the female lead just has her titties out and about. 34 year old me is rolling their eyes throughout wondering when this movie will finally end. I watched this because my gf was interested in seeing it. She thought it was dumb and was a wishapp version of 50 shades of grey. |
So it's Boxing Helena aimed at women in 2020?
Or is it The Collector? The Collector book and film has been a sex-killer favourite for quite a while. Is it wise to be making erotica out of something that keeps happening in real life? |
"Us"
Pretty good... not that into horror movies... |

Tu Hijo-5/10
A man's son is beaten within an inch of his life in what seems like a senseless act of violence. His father, a doctor, sets out to try to find out who did as opposed to why. It's a long, boring, slow moving story that plays out mostly how'd you expect, but so little happens throughout that it's hard to stay invested. The plot twist at the end is ok but it was a drag to make it that far. |
Jojo Rabbit 8/10
Tonally, the film is all over the place and sometimes it can be rather jarring, but overall I thought it was a really good film. |
Midsommar. I liked it overall. It probably dragged on a lil bit too long tho
|
Stoked - 8/10
Whole thing is on YT for free - Good doc about a skater turned killer <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/vw8IzWWwTMs" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Skaters are crazy bastards.
Christian Hosoi would be a good documentary subject too. |
Seanny, I'm watching Birdman and it is a manic 100 mph bullet train and I'm loving it so far.
|
Also Ed Norton is fucking amazing in this
|
Birdman-10/10
A manic, high paced study of a washed up superhero actor trying to gain relevance and feed his own narcissistic view of himself by writing, directing and starring in a Broadway show. The movie has a breakneck pace and the cast is superb. |
My daughter asked to watch the original Ghostbusters with me. So proud.
|
You are raising her well!
|
The hangover
Normal funny... some of the stuff felt cliche but the cliche likely started with this movie Its fine |
Palm Springs just came out the other day. Pretty enjoyable.
|
The Old Guard
Wasn't too bad |

Anyone seen any funny movies that have come out in the past 5-10 years? Seems like all the movies I find funny are like 10-15 years old now and I've seen them a bunch of times.

Can probably think of more later. |
The Nice Guys is superb, a real comedy with some arse in it. Long Shot is bollocks.
|
"Free Fire" would be a good movie to watch after or before "The Nice Guys".
Two great crime comedies. |
The King Of Staten Island - 7/10
|
Destroyer-7/10
Been trying to watch this movie since it's limited release in 2018. It was pretty good. Nicole Kidman is very good. But he performance wasn't as transformative as some of the reviews I read would lead you to believe. Anyways....a drunkn old detective went deep undercover early in her career with tragic results. She finds out the person they were undercover to investigate is back, and the story plays out from there, with her basically going rogue to pursue leads and showing flashbacks to how the operation was botched, leading her life to become the shit hole it is. Thoroughly enjoyed it. |
Palm Springs.
Didn't expect to like it as much as i did. 8/10 |
The Hunt - 8/10
This was good fun |
The Old Guard-7/10
Fun movie with an interesting premise but uninteresting characters and basic story. Ended with a chance for a sequel but I wonder if it'll get one. |
Decided to watch Detective Pikachu...... beginning was v cringeworthy and the main actor is terrible in it and I considered just turning it off.... but I don't do things that way so stuck with it...
Naturally became better when the voice of Ryan Reynolds appeared, but felt like most of the best jokes were in the trailers anyways. Overall I'd give it uhhhh maybe 6/10. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more as a youth, I don't know. |
Ronin - 3.5/4
High volumes of fast paced heist action with gunplay galore interlocked by some slick, droll repartee between fine fine actors. Mcelhone, De Niro and Reno are the main players backed up by Bean and Pryce so the facial acting is all very earnest without the slightest scene chewing. All in all it's a top tier action film and a great example of style and substance working perfectly to improve what is otherwise a fairly familiar "game of cat and mouse" plot. It works though, especially if you like car chases. |
Barry Lyndon (1975) - 10/10
Not the first time I've seen it, but haven't seen it since like 2003. Upped it from an 8 or 9/10 to a 10/10 I think... Beautiful... literally every shot "like a painting"... lots of characters with really funny-looking, strange faces, which I always like... Bizarre, detached characters... Subtly very funny and doesn't take itself too seriously... Very good... Was one of the last Stanley Kubrick movies I watched because I didn't think I'd like it that much but I really liked it :-) https://i.imgur.com/Csk8WYn.jpg https://i.imgur.com/h7v5Ejdl.jpg |
Ready or Not - 8/10
Pretty enjoyable I guess |
Was amused by the fact that the security system was controlled via an old video switcher..... and one that we used to have in the terrible old truck....
|
Freaks - 3/4
Supervillain origin story. Better than Brightburn. Emile Hirsch is yet again the best part of a genre embracing indie film. The man gives more to cinema than a one armed projectionist. |
Four Lions - 6/10
It was really uncomfortable to watch. |
It's a masterpiece and it's not written to be a safe laugh. It's written to make clear the absurdity of the topic it presents to you.
|
Agreed. Maybe I'll revisit it later on. I can't see myself watching it again anytime soon. Was thoroughly impressed by Riz Ahmed.
