i was well aware of who ric flair, dusty rhodes, harley race, etc. were living up here in the north, but my mom's side of the family came up here from florida so that's probably the only reason why.

whiteyford 12-26-2014 10:55 AM

Same as Indy guys now, if you follow more than one promotion you knew who guys like Punk/Bryan etc were and what they were capable of, otherwise you're kinda going solely by how they're presented when they debut.

Vastardikai 12-26-2014 02:43 PM

There was those who are in the "Bubble" and those who are out.

I grew up in the Southeast, so I was a bit more out of the "Bubble" than most (A big WWF fan back then (never said I had sense), but quite aware of folks like "Mean" Mark Callous, Sid, etc.)

Then again, I was even more out of the bubble than most, as I also watched Global after school and got to see folks like the Ebony Experience, The Patriot, and Scotty Flamingo.

We never got WCW in Australia until the mid-late 90's. Even at the video stores there was only really WWF. Yet I still knew who Ric Flair was when he debuted in WWF, admittedly due to a book I got in the late 80's that had a brief mention of him in it, but I just knew he was a big deal.

Hanso Amore 12-26-2014 07:38 PM

I grew up in buffalo, and was a huge wwf fan. But I would still see wcw on tbs all the time. Then I started watching it more because their weekly shows had big names and not just squash matches. I thought it was so cool to watch wwf on Saturday morning. Then wcw Saturday night. I never saw them as competition just different shows.

WCW was always the minor leagues.

Emperor Smeat 12-26-2014 08:32 PM

Did WCW ever have a Saturday or Sunday morning show like the WWF?

Remember watching some WCW once in a while as a kid but not sure if it was just the Saturday night shows.

Helmsphere 12-26-2014 08:41 PM

No I remember waking up at like 7 in the morning and there would be a WCW show on. I want to say it was Worldwide or something like that.

Grew up in Michigan. Was vaguely aware that there WAS a WCW, because I'd flashed past it flipping channels, but I had no idea who Flair was as a 9-year-old when he debuted. I wondered who this old guy was and why was he going after Macho Man.

Surprised you didn't know about WCW because Steiner Brothers. Weren't they supposed to be the gods of all of Michigan, or some such shit?

I knew about NWA/WCW mostly because of my brother. He would tell stories about visiting family over in Akron that had cable (back when that was kind of a big deal, and not taken as granted in every household you walk into) and seeing, and subsequently telling me about guys like (apparently pre-King) Harley Race, or Road Warriors, or Magnum TA or the 4 Horsemen from some channel he'd be able to catch it on there. Mom cosign'd on Flair (and "hated that bastard"), which led me to learn about other wrestlers that weren't in WWF... it was like a whole other side to wrestling I wasn't able to see, and that kinda made it exciting. I didn't know shit about Terry Funk (again, mom did) until I saw him later on in WCW and recognized him as "that guy who always gets beat up in movies" (he's always someone's bodyguard or lackey, and he always get's his ass kicked. Example: Roadhouse.)

I didn't know about any non-wwe wrestling until I was in the 6th or 7th grade. I was at my grandma's house, then all of the sudden there's wrestling on tv, but it wasn't WWF wrestling. I was mildly confused, then bored. Later on, after Hogan joined WCW, I was watching TV and all of the sudden I see Hulk Hogan with a pair of brass knuckles holding at least 6 heels at bay. Part of me died seeing that. It was the first instance as a wrestling fan that I couldn't allow my sense of disbelief to kick in. I watched Papa Shango use voodoo and bought it, but not Hogan with a pair of brass knuckles holding off 6 guys.

Fignuts 12-27-2014 04:45 PM

Got into wrestling around the time of wrestlemania 6. Mom bought me the PWI 500 of that year shortly afterwards, so I knew a bunch of dudes outside of WWF very early on.

WCW weren't on WWF's level, but they still had their own magazines and toys and stuff, so I knew who Flair, Luger, and Sid were before they arrived in WWF.

Lock Jaw 12-27-2014 05:14 PM

Looks like Savior and Shisen were harassing her... on behalf of owenbrown.

#1-norm-fan 12-27-2014 05:46 PM

Yeah, I lived in California. WCW was on TBS which wasn't a strictly southern station obviously. You could find the action figures and stuff in stores right there along with the WWF ones. It definitely wasn't some obscure company outside of the south.

SlickyTrickyDamon 12-27-2014 05:46 PM

Only if they edit the title history accordingly... a win, and then a new title won via tournament by the actual historically correct winner.

Hell, they could even make this a show (or a "mini show"- like a 5 minute spot filler) on the network: Sheamus' Improbable History. They CG him into these old matches where he wins the titles, then runs into the parking area, jumps in the DeLorian, and heads to another time.

One of the great things about Cody's history is how each change came about so fluidly and was so well written that it was just completely natural. He's managed to pull each persona off, and has been able to connect with the audience. He has a great look, is great in the ring and great on the mic. I really see no reason why he can't some day shed the Stardust persona and move on to better things:

For those in the UK, Sky Sports is changing time slots and ppv fees for WWE shows starting next year.

Quote:

The Royal Rumble is priced at £19.99, a £5 increase on the previous non-Wrestlemania PPV price. While not confirmed, I understand that there will be no more 'free' PPVs on Sky Sports.

Raw is unaffected. Full three hours live in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

It appears that new episodes of WWE Main Event will air at around 10pm on Thursdays.

Smackdown stays at around 10pm on Fridays.

NXT is nowhere to be found and nor is Superstars. Superstars is definitely gone from its old Sky 1 Saturday afternoon slot.

The recap filler shows - WWE Experience, Bottom Line, Afterburn - and Vintage Collection still seem to be in random places in the schedule.

I cannot get behind the Ascension for one reason and one reason only.

I don't find a guy named Connor intimidating. Even as big as he is, I think "This dude's named Connor, what a puss." And while Victor can be an intimidating name, for what they are presenting, it doesn't work.

There is only one Connor that was awesome, and that was the late Bone Crusher.

It'd be like if the Road Warriors came out, with the war paint, the shoulder pads, and everything, but were called Mike and Joe. Or if Demolition came out with the paint, the S&M tights, and everything, but called themselves Bill and Barry.

I'd make it a thread, but I don't find it threadworthy.

Some other sheet news include the final tally for 2014's RAW endings were 24 shows (46%) ending in a DQ or shenanigans, 10 shows (19%) ending with a promo or talking, and 18 shows (35%) ending with a clean win/loss result.

I don't think they'll get to face each other at WrestleMania, but I think that in the wake of it, we might see Goldust turn on Stardust, Cody snap out of the gimmick, and then get a bit of his feud with his brother before becoming a very strong pick of people to win the 2015 Money in the Bank Ladder Match.

OK, I was mistaken. There are 2 Connors that are bad ass. But it's not a name that inspires the kind of fear that a team that looks like they do should.

It's his only name so it counts as first and last both.

Last dirty sheets of the year:

Quote:

Monday's episode of WWE RAW, the final show of 2014 with Edge and Christian running the show and a big tease from Daniel Bryan for the final hour, drew 3.459 million viewers, down from last week's 3.631 million viewers. For this week's show, the first hour drew 3.174 million viewers, the second hour drew 3.476 million viewers and the final hour drew 3.726 million viewers.

The idea behind Ryback's promo on Monday night's WWE RAW from Washington, DC was for him to connect with the fans on a new level by telling an emotional, personal story. Ryback re-tweeted several messages from fans on Monday night about how the promo inspired them. Ryback told the same story in an interview with Sam Roberts back in 2013 and recently on Chris Jericho's Talk Is Jericho podcast.

There's talk within WWE that some of the WrestleMania 31 main events may have been switched around in the last week or so. Apparently there were creative changes suggested for some of the top matches also.

We noted before that Curtis Axel worked the recent set of WWE NXT TV tapings and will face Hideo Itami on the next episode. Axel is expected to take over the role that Tyson Kidd had in NXT where he provides main roster star power for a few months.

When Orton does fully return, he is expected to initially work with Seth Rollins, even though he’s advertised to work with Kane on live events.

Some other sheet news include TNA redesigned their belts as part of the move to Destination America.

Shame about Kurt, coming back at the Rumble to beat down Rusev could have been huge :(

Volare 12-31-2014 07:05 PM

Ungodly pop of epic proportion!

That thing about being "banned from MMA or wrestling for a year" surely can't hold up.

No, but they feel like it would be too hard and costly for them to fight in court. CM Punk proved you can't have a non-compete on an independent contractor. They be trolling.

Droford 12-31-2014 08:44 PM

No way Lesnar resigns with the WWe now.

Mr. Nerfect 12-31-2014 08:46 PM

He'll be the exception. Is fighting at Brock's age a smart move anyway? I mean, he's clearly still a beast, but he could make a lot of money doing UFC dates with WWE for a few more years, couldn't he?

I'll profess to now knowing much about MMA. I heard that Punk had signed and thought it was weird.

Did it with Brock when he left, Brock wrestled and competed in MMA during his 'no compete' clause and I'm sure a court sided with him, Del Rio got his thrown out fairly easily, pretty sure unless they're getting paid you can't deprive them of a living.
