Free game for xbone this month is Gone Home. Probably the shittiest well reviewed game I've ever played.

On that note, I just finished Layers of Fear which like Gone Home, is a "walking simulator" game, but much MUCH better. Lots of great jump scares, creepy imagery, and some truly excellent and freaky space manipulation.

Fuuuuck Gone Home. It's a walking symptom of so many things wrong today.

In one of those "Did You Know Gaming" type facts, Namco originally had plans for Final Fantasy VII's Cloud to be the special guest fighter for the PS2 version of Soul Calibur II.

They had a tentative deal in place to use the character but something happened at the last minute causing it to be shelved. Tekken's Heihachi was used as a quick replacement to ensure each version of the game still had an exclusive fighter.

Came from a recent 8-4 Play podcast episode with Ubisoft's Nao Higo and Jason Shroeder as the guests. At the time of Soul Calibur II, Higo was the Localization Producer for Namco.

I actually don't care about pay to win in single player. If someone else wants to pay money to progress faster, thats fine. It has no effect on me or my game. This thing with shadow of war is definitely shady but it's not as bad as whats going on in battlefront 2.

Not even an hour into Shadow of War and I've had my first holy shit moment with the nemesis system.

I run into this super powerful orc captain while chasing another that was retreating. He and his gang pretty much wreck my shit. Some random spear chucking enemy ends up delivering the final blow, which of course promotes him to captain and he's now Bolg the Tark Killer. So I say fuck that, and take on a revenge mission to go kill him. Not only will I get sweet retribution, but if you kill a captain who once killed you get legendary gear from him. Unfortunately he also gets some major buffs and combined with the fact that I just started and don't have the mechanics mastered yet....he killed me again. Almost fucking had him.

At this point I'm thinking I should probably leave it and just level up for now. But pride won out, and I decided to go after him one last time. It's not til I activated the mission that I realized that for killing me again his level increased to over three times my own. So yeah. That was demoralizing. But I manage to kill the other nearby orcs first so I can battle him one on one. He taunts me all like "You know the more times I kill you, the more people call me Tark Slayer". I give it my best shot, but his level is just too high now. He knocks me down and as the killing blow cinematic starts, I start thinking about things I can do to level up and come back. Right before his sword hits me some random soldier comes in and IMPALES HIM KILLING HIM FUCKING DEAD RIGHT FUCKING THERE.

The screen flashed something, and the soldier said something but I didn't see or hear it because I'm just sitting there with my mouth agape processing what just happened for a good 5 seconds before I yell FUCK YEAH and scare my roommate half to death.

It was probably one of the coolest gaming moments I've had in a long time. This game is fucking tits.

"This new patent appears to be about how Activision plans to use “tricks” in their matchmaking system to lure players to purchase more in-game items through the course of playing a game. Specifically, the patent mentions that high skilled players get paired with low-skilled players to purposefully encourage low-skilled players to spend more money to get better in-game items to match up against higher skilled players."

Kalyx triaD 10-18-2017 02:22 PM

The only game I'm thinking this would apply to is CoD. Outside of Activision, I can see this being used in Battlefront 2. But... I dunno. I don't think 'salty purchases of loot' is a thing with players. I'd love to see if this works at any level.

Destor 10-18-2017 02:23 PM

Im ok with them doing this, its business. Just thought it was interesting.

Kalyx triaD 10-18-2017 02:41 PM

This may circumvent XBL's own native True Skill matchmaking (or whatever it's called now) that every developer has to use as a base to some extent. If it's matching people outside of connection strength, W/L, and game specific skill rating then that could be a problem... competitively. But that presumes Activision gives a damn which is very unlikely.

Dunno. There have been tons of games throughout the years where you had to partake in a major grind to unlock the rewards at the end. Knowing that, I can't help but look at the situation and think that people are just lazy.

How is it lazy? There's so many good games out there right now that if one gets even slightly dull, it's time to move on.

Fignuts 10-18-2017 06:19 PM

I'm talking about the people who are constantly whining about it. Trust me I get the abundance of games, and the ADD nature of it all. I have so many games in my backlog, that I've lost count.

But these people that go on forums and complain about it being this great injustice as if everything in a game should just be handed to them. Just because there are a lot of good games out there doesn't mean developers shouldn't be able to put in rewards for players that want to grind it out and earn them.

And in this day and age no one should be complaining about a cutscene being hard to get, because if you really want to see it that badly without grinding for it, you can just watch it on youtube.

Honestly, if there weren't microtransactions no one would even be talking about it. Despite the fact that microtransactions for grind heavy games of all kinds have existed for years now.

Fignuts 10-18-2017 06:23 PM

Even Battlefront 2....the problem there is that there is one specific star card that is incredibly overpowered. Nerf that, and the micro transactions are no different than the shortcuts that have existed in battlefield for years now.

Destor 10-18-2017 06:29 PM

No, I can choose to get short cuts for gear in BF while still needing to unlock the mods and perks (for vehicles). Not to mention the starting weapons could be used the whole time as the weapons in BF didn't escalate in power as you progressed. You basically took a shortcut for more options out of the gate, but there wasn't any crazy advantage. The optics of it all was the controversy, imo.

In Battlefront 2 actual game changing perks of various levels are on the line, and merely having a lot of these cards enable you to have a bigger set (three slots) leading to an objectively stronger character on the field. And that's not even mentioning the higher lvl cards that you can just get at random, or create by upgrading a normal card.

A direct comparison would be if BF offered loot packs with very useful perks in them, with a chance for even better versions of perks, for no other reason than you purchased it, and then you can stack it after the fact. Everything about Battlefront 2 is much better than the last one but their loot system is easily the most infringing on gameplay balance.

I don't mind as much since this was always designed on the more casual end of shooters, the last one was just too casual. Not it's a good mix of arcade and agency.

... Sure, it's for the smartphone version, but I think it's the one franchise they have that is most suited to phones. As long as they don't shrink it as hard as they did Fire Emblem.

It's on 7am UK time, so probably pretty damn early/late for you yanks.

If we were to get another Goku, I'd rather it be Goku Black, tbh. Has more of a unique style all his own. Could do a lot just with his energy blade thing.

Kalyx triaD 10-31-2017 10:02 PM

The popularity of what is essentially an elimination team deathmatch. I'd like to see the fuss about something I could replicate in Halo 5's custom games mode.

Fignuts 10-31-2017 10:54 PM

I really doubt you could replicate the experience on Halo 5. The basic concept, yes.

Kalyx triaD 10-31-2017 11:02 PM

What's the specific concept?

Fignuts 10-31-2017 11:11 PM

Quote:

Each match starts with 100 players parachuting from a plane onto a map area approximately 8 by 8 kilometres (5.0█mi ×█5.0█mi) in size.[2] The plane's flight path across the map varies with each round, requiring players to quickly determine the best time to eject and parachute to the ground.[1] Players start with no gear beyond customized clothing selections which do not affect gameplay. Once they land, players can search buildings and other sites to find weapons, vehicles, armor, clothing, and other equipment. These items are procedurally distributed throughout the map at the start of a match, with certain high-risk zones typically having better equipment.[1] Killed players can be looted to acquire their gear as well.[1] Players can opt to play either from the first-person or third-person perspective, each having their own advantages and disadvantages in combat and situational awareness; though server-specific settings can be used to force all players into one perspective to eliminate some advantages.[1][3]
Every few minutes, the playable area of the map begins to shrink down towards a random location, with any player caught outside the safe area taking damage incrementally, and eventually being eliminated if the safe zone is not entered in time; in game, the players see the boundary as a shimmering blue wall that contracts over time.[4] This results in a more confined map, in turn increasing the chances of encounters.[1] During the course of the match, random regions of the map are highlighted in red and bombed, posing a threat to players that remain in that area.[5] In both cases, players are warned a few minutes before these events, giving them time to relocate to safety.[6] At random, a plane will fly over various parts of the playable map and drop a loot package, containing items which are typically unobtainable during normal gameplay. These packages emit highly visible red smoke, drawing interested players near it and creating further confrontations.[1] On average, a full round takes no more than 30 minutes.[6]
At the completion of each round, players gain in-game currency based on how long they survived, how many other players they had killed, and how much damage they dealt to other players. The currency is used to purchase crates which contain cosmetic items for character customization.[7]

Fignuts 10-31-2017 11:18 PM

I mean it's like saying what's the difference between conquest in destiny and conquest in battlefield.

Kalyx triaD 10-31-2017 11:35 PM

So literally an adaptation of Battle Royale? Thought the name was coincidental.

Also you can still make that in Halo 5. But it's a neat mix of concepts.

Sepholio 11-01-2017 01:55 AM

It gets stale very quickly. Same thing over and over and over again. No progression.

Good for E-sports I guess. But I really hope this kind of experience doesn't keep trending. It's just so shallow in the long run and uninspired.

4) SALES & FREEBIES:

#BROKEN Hasney 11-02-2017 04:49 PM

Apparently in COD WW2 you get a "social score" for watching people open lootboxes and for people watching you. Also apparently the higher your social score the better loot you get in boxes.

I wish this word hadn't been co-opted by a bunch of twats as a catch-all insult, but that is literally a cuck score.

Emperor Smeat 11-02-2017 04:59 PM

Do others get to see the contents as well since this sounds like a modified idea from that patent where they purposely wanted to rig matchmaking in games to ensure people spent money on loot boxes. Idea being to get losing players to spend money to get the cool weapons being used against them.

#BROKEN Hasney 11-02-2017 05:20 PM

Oh yeah, everyone sees what you get. I think as this is just in the social space, it's seperstw to the matchmaking idea. But it sounds like CoD just wants to be focused on getting lootbox purchases over being fun now.

Kalyx triaD 11-02-2017 05:54 PM

Presentation wise that's actually kinda cute, but yeah it's very clear what the intentions are here.
