Based on a recent rumor from the UK, the Hlao Reach engine is being used to help develop Bungie's next game which is meant for release on a next-gen console.

Quote:

This rumor comes from UK publication PSM3, which makes the following statement:

“Built on the foundations of the Halo: Reach engine, it’ll be super-powered to take advantage of the next wave of hardware.”
While Bungie separated from Microsoft after Halo Reach was released and joined as a developer for Activision, the studio did keep rights to their Reach and other Halo-based engines for future game development.

EGM also thinks the next-gen game could be a potential Halo game but Bungie themselves have stated their involvement with the Halo universe officially ends at the end of March.

It is also rumored the engine itself is being used for a game called Destiny which was hinted to be currently in development by Bungie.

What idiot at EGM thought their next game was a Halo game after everything that's been said? Jesus.

Reach was the only Halo game that I truly had a lot of fun with, so this is good news for me.

Is GAME the UK equivalent of Gamestop?

Emperor Smeat 03-05-2012 08:31 PM

Them and Gamestation are the equivalent of Gamestop and pre-buyout EB Games here.

Drakul 03-06-2012 02:17 AM

I thought Smelly Meatball lived in the US.

Emperor Smeat 03-06-2012 02:28 AM

I do.

Normally don't post news not involving the US/Canada area unless its something big or an on going story like with GAME. Also remember what UK's version of Gamestop because of Kotaku in the past having news and sales charts from the UK.

Drakul 03-06-2012 03:15 AM

I ask because you said GAME and Gamestation were the equivilent of Gamestop and EB here. The "here" making me think you might be in the UK.

Kane Knight 03-06-2012 08:55 AM

"Here" was supposed to reference the US equivalents.

Drakul 03-06-2012 09:29 AM

I see. I had it completely the other way.

Valve announces some good news and some bad news in regards to the upcoming Counter Strike Global Offensive game.

The good news is the game is still on track for a Summer 2012 release date and the feedback has lead to a lot of tweaks and changes in the game. The game is still set for 7 maps to be included at launch with all being based on classic CS maps.

More good news was revealed for PC owners of the game as Valve announces the PC version will be given top priority in terms of both frequent and amount of post-launch updates to the game. This was due to the strong feedback from PC beta users.

Now for the bad news, similar to every other Valve game released on consoles, updates will be a lot less frequent while Valve hasn't gotten as much feedback from console beta users. The initial goal of PC-PS3 cross-platform play was also dropped due to the feedback and difficulties experienced during the beta.

Quote:

“The beta has proved we want to update not just the beta, but the game itself post-launch frequently on the PC,” Valve’s Chet Faliszek told Joystiq. ”To do that we need to separate the platforms so one doesn’t hamstring the other. So for that, we have removed the idea of cross-platform play – essentially make all platforms stronger by not mixing them.”

As part of Final Fantasy's 25th anniversary this year, Square-Enix teases a new Final Fantasy game might be on the way.

Besides Theatrhythm Final Fantasy which was released last month for the 3DS, the company also announced next month a special commemorative set of Final Fantasy themed playing cards will go on sale in Japan.

The company also could be teasing a new game in development as the anniversary section for the official Final Fantasy website was updated. The biggest rumor right now is the company is considering remaking Final Fantasy VII with the twist of it arriving on the 3DS.

Previously Sony owned the exclusive rights to Final Fantasy VII due to their role as a publisher of the game and partially providing the funding needed to move the game away from the N64 and onto the PS1 at the time.

If the remake does arrive for the 3DS, then it would be another game in the series for the DS/3DS line which Nintendo has provided the funding and publishing rights.

However a different rumor could be pointing to a remake of Final Fantasy V for the 3DS if it is true.

#BROKEN Hasney 03-08-2012 02:02 AM

V makes most sense as they did III and IV on the DS in fancy 3Dness. I hope it is, purely because it would mean a 3D VI remake is closer and I would squee.

The next Xbox and PS4 could be a lot more expensive than people expect due to Epic Games wanting "bleeding edge" technology as the top priority for both consoles.

Epic Games believes the potential losses and costs for these consoles can easily be subsidize by the software.

Quote:

The console gaming experience is about delivering something that’s way out past the bleeding edge and subsidizing it through the software royalty model – just like Apple does with the phones. It’s not that much different.”
The studio also hinted if it doesn't occur, Apple will be getting a lot more support from the company.

[quote]
Quote:

“Don’t worry. We are absolutely every day [pushing platform holders],” Epic’s VP Mark Rein told CVG. ”This is why we did Samaritan and why we’re doing a really high-end demo in the room here. We really are pushing these guys, because if they don’t, Apple will go right past them.”
It was also implied they would prefer if the console market shifted a bit more towards Apple's iPad style than keeping the traditional long life cycle.

Epic Games previously was very influential in the development of the Xbox 360 with their main contributions being the advantage in RAM and better GPU than what the PS3 contained. The studio is also rumored to be once again providing some suggestions towards the development of the next Xbox.

Captain of Fun 03-08-2012 07:04 PM

Epic can go choke on a big fat black cock.

Kane Knight 03-08-2012 10:17 PM

Dunno if it was mentioned in the Mass Erect 3 thread, but it's been confirmed that the totally not-on-disc DLC is actually on the disc. It's very likely Bioware lied to us about it (though it's possible there's another explanation, albeit unlikely).

Also, what Captain of Fun said.

Captain of Fun 03-09-2012 01:25 AM

Yeah, same shit is happening with Street Fighter X Tekken. 12 characters and 2 sets of alternate costumes for each character.

Though in this case, I don't recall if Capcom ever stated whether there would be on disc dlc or not.

Capcom's official statement:

Quote:

Capcom has confirmed that 12 new fan-favorite characters will be available as Downloadable Content (DLC) on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC versions of Street Fighter X Tekken later this year. The playable characters will make their debut on the PS Vita system when the game is released this fall, with the console and PC versions receiving them as DLC soon after. The character information and files were intentionally included on retail versions of the PS3 and Xbox 360 game to save hard drive space and to ensure for a smooth transition when the DLC is available, allowing players who choose not to purchase the content the ability to play against players that did. More specifics regarding pricing, dates and other additional exciting DLC plans for Street Fighter X Tekken will be shared at a later date. As a reminder, the retail version of the game will be the only disc-based version consumers will need to own and all future upgrades will come from post-launch DLC. The new characters fighting their way onto Street Fighter X Tekken are... from the Street Fighter side... Blanka, Cody, Dudley, Elena, Guy and Sakura will be playable and from Tekken... Alisa Bosconovitch, Bryan Fury, Christie Monteiro, Jack, Lars Alexandersson and Lei Wulong will all be available.

By including these 12 characters on the disc, the idea was to ensure easy compatibility between players who do and do not choose to download the characters when they arrive as DLC. For example, not buying costumes in the Street Fighter IV series means you will not see the costumes when playing another person who did buy them; on-disc characters avoid this issue and allow everyone to participate in the update without additional patches or hiccups. The update also saves on file size - instead of a massive download, there will be a much smaller unlock that brings the new content to the surface.
There's no way to know for sure if this is bullshit or not, so whatever.

Funky Fly 03-09-2012 03:44 AM

It's bullshit. They released costume catalogue dlc for ssf4 that allowed you to see dlc costumes when playing online with people who have bought the costumes.

#BROKEN Hasney 03-09-2012 05:44 AM

MCV "exclusive source" says next Xbox will have solid state retail games and no disc drive. Probably a good way to get more storage space without paying Sony for Blu-ray.

As Funky pointed out, it's really easy to put up a free patch or whatever for multiplayer compatibility.

Still, it's not as bad as SRtT (for sheer volume) or Bioware (who insisted this was stuff being worked on after the disc was finalised), so....

Oh dear. Please tell me you're not one of those morons.

#BROKEN Hasney 03-09-2012 09:27 AM

Depends. I'm not one of those morons who believe that Microsoft would refuse to give money to Sony because it's Sony, but I am one of those morons who heard that it was prohibitively expensive to license the technology for blu-ray.

I've just Googled it and read that in 2010 that it dropped from $20 a license to $9.50 for blu-ray hardware, so it might be more feasible these days.

Kane Knight 03-09-2012 09:32 AM

You mean...They had the audacity to ask a comparable amount for Blu-Ray licensing in the past when compared to DVD technology?

That makes sense. I mean, Microsoft didn't pay DVD licensing fees last gen....

#BROKEN Hasney 03-09-2012 09:41 AM

It was $15-20 when they released the original XBox, but some of that cost was MPEG-2 licensing as well, which was disabled unless you bought their dongle remote control. There is a huge possibility I've read all this ages ago and not comprehended it right.

If it is true though, as long as it's a fast medium and doesn't bump game prices up, I'm all for a solid state medium.

Kane Knight 03-09-2012 09:45 AM

It will jack the price up, but okay.

Emperor Smeat 03-09-2012 03:27 PM

So would it mean all the next Xbox games are only downloadable titles or use SD-like cards?

Probably going to hurt them at least in the short term if the next console is digital-only considering how poor internet speeds are on average in the US and that is their main stronghold. Could also piss off retailers or at least the non-big ones which hurt the PSP Go when it tried to remove retailers for selling games.

Edit: Nevermind, missed the line about the games being on a card in the article. Probably also means no chance of backwards compatibility unless its done like the PS3 and Vita where you have to rebuy your games in a digital form although at least it won't have the same problem the Xbox 360 had with bad disc drives and the RRoD.

Kane Knight 03-09-2012 04:06 PM

RROD was a completely different problem.

Also, backwards compatibility has been a pretty big deal for the last couple gens. removing it would be damaging in the short term, I think, since Sony's unlikely to abandon the BD format and even the Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii-U will have BC.

Plus, pretty sure the cards would be prohibitively expensive.

Droford 03-09-2012 05:09 PM

A blank 64 gb SD card costs $60

Thats what you would need to replace a blu ray disc with, storage wise anyway.

Current game discs are maxed out at 10gb, a 16 gb card costs $18.

Im guessing though that their format will be proprietary to hold back piracy for a while. If you cant buy blank cards and you cant buy the hardware to read/write them yourself, it would be pretty hard for the average gamer to do much, at first anyway...

Kane Knight 03-09-2012 06:27 PM

Quote:

Current game discs are maxed at 9ish, with the 360 only having 7.something useable. More games are going to end up multi-disc, and game devs are chomping at the bit for more storage space.

Would twice the storage space satisfy them? A look at some of the popular games on Steam would indicate no, or at least not for long. A decent chunk of big games run at 10+ GB.

With proprietary cards, price goes up some, too. Even mass produced. You can have two tiers of cards, but then it becomes an issue of who eats the added costs for more expensive cards.
