Girl House - 0/10

El Vaquero de Infierno 01-31-2020 04:53 PM

Ad Astra 7/10

A slow, low-key film, but I found my attention did not wander.

GD 01-31-2020 05:08 PM

It looked beautiful on the big screen.

GD 01-31-2020 05:08 PM

Watching "Shutter Island" for the first time. There's something off about the acting.

Does nothing better than the original. Not a single thing.

Gretel & Hansel - 7/10

A+ Visuals

C- Pacing

Feels a bit Jodorowsky at times (it's big on visual symbolism)

What a fucking ride...Jesus Christ!

End Of Watch - 3.5/4

Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena star in a “found” footage police procedural with as much behind it in natural charisma and acting ability as it does in plot substance and realism. Two LAPD police officers self document their daily routines as they uphold the law in their community until they are hit listed by the gang that they are working to put away. It is a perfect blend of genres and the underlying theme of justice at any cost has been updated to feel more like "justice at all costs" and I think that was a marvellous decision by the director David Ayer.
The plot is not the highlight of this film, the working relationship and friendship between the leads is and as far as acting chemistry goes this is some of the finest work I have ever seen from Pena and Gyllenhaa. Emotionally explosive and chillingly prescient, this is a jigsaw as beautiful when disassembled as it is completed. A masterfully made dramatisation of cop shows with an ante up every few scenes just to keep your journey to the end as emotional as possible.
Michael Pena could easily have walked away with an award for this performance as it is the best use of his smart-ass schtick that he has become so famous for outside of comedy roles. I could watch this film all day long, it is as close to “Training Day” as any film has ever gotten so far.

This is an excellent film and one that I will watch again because I know it will feel like I'm meeting up with some old friends.

Can agree with this

Seanny One Ball 02-04-2020 07:36 PM

Re-watching the original and classic Pink Panther franchise is a joy and I encourage everybody to get in on the action.

A Shot In The Dark may be the very pinnacle, but the others are all still charming and hilarious. Just ignore "Trail" because it's a travesty and reusing outtakes is bullshit.

Seanny One Ball 02-04-2020 07:45 PM

Here's some trivia: William Peter Blatty of Exorcist fame co-wrote the screenplay for A Shot In The Dark.
How good is that?!

Writing two of the best genre films of all time. No wonder he lived so long. The universe kept him around for a reason.

Seanny One Ball 02-04-2020 07:48 PM

I need to see The Ninth Configuration now. I meant to get that last year but slacked off.

Lock Jaw 02-04-2020 08:59 PM

Never seen any of the Pink Panther movies.... saw pieces of one of them once I think

Seanny One Ball 02-04-2020 09:24 PM

Please watch "A Shot In The Dark" at your nearest opportunity. You will probably laugh so hard you get a skid mark.

Lock Jaw 02-04-2020 11:24 PM

Birds of Prey - 8/10

I have Zero clue what Warner Bros was doing with the trailers for this movie -- The movie is a blast. Funny, hyper-violent (Deadpool levels), some really cool af fight scenes and fight choreography.

Margot Robbie and Ewen McGregor are both great, you never want to take your eyes off either one.

I remember renting the original Pink Panther movie from my local library when I was a kid and feeling pissed off that it wasn't a cartoon or at least like a Roger Rabbit half-cartoon and watching it for like 10 minutes then fast forwarding through it and not seeing a single cartoon...

Seanny One Ball 02-08-2020 10:56 AM

The cartoon was alright but mostly for the incredible intro. Obviously it was born of the film but honestly, do yourself a favour and watch "A Shot In The Dark" if you ever get the chance.
It's just magic.

Lock Jaw 02-08-2020 11:37 AM

Yeah, I used to watch the cartoon and definitely remember being confused one day when my dad was watching the movie on TV and it was not a cartoon.... he was trying to say how funny it was, but punk young kid me was not interested.....

Seanny One Ball 02-08-2020 01:36 PM

There are 6 Peter Sellars "Pink Panther" films and only the last one is bad. Sellers was dead by then so they just used a bunch of outtakes and made a dreadful hash of it.
I have a box-set but it only has 5 of them, it does include the dreadful last one though so no idea what went on with that...

Seanny One Ball 02-08-2020 01:38 PM

Lock Jaw 02-09-2020 02:56 PM

Yeah, my 4D experience was essentially me thinking that it would probably just be a big waste on a lot of movies..... Aquaman was good in it though.....

Looked at what was playing in 4D last time I went back home to Toronto, but it was Star Wars, which I thought would just be a big waste

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) - 8/10

Was actually really fun. Loved the final fight scenes/climax of the movie. I really want a sequel that focuses more on Black Canary/Huntress. Feel like its weakness was not giving them enough time to shine compared to Harley Quinn.

Also still have my gripe about Cassandra Cain.... there was absolutely no reason at all to make that character be Cassandra Cain. Might as well just have made her be Misfit or Black Alice or someone.....

Caught on to what was happening pretty early on. But it's a fun ride that's filled with awkward scenes and a satisfying ending. Not as good as "Us", imo, but still a very good film for Mr. Peele.

Parasite So good baby 10/10 baby gotta watch it again but cant bring myself to baby... so tense... truly truly mad...

El Vaquero de Infierno 02-14-2020 05:29 PM

Ready or Not 6/10

Bride marries into a rich family, and as a tradition has to play a game of hide and seek, except her new family hunt her down with weapons, looking to sacrifice her to the Devil.

Little in the way of tension, and the forced humour falls flat. It's alright if you want to kill 90 mins.

Unbelievable, El Vaq!

Midsommar (2019) - 8/10

Very good. Felt very uneasy throughout, which I always enjoy. Liked it a lot better than Hereditary because I didn't feel bored at any point. Good...

Triple A 02-15-2020 02:44 AM

Watched two other Safdie brothers movies (guys who made Uncut Gems)

Both good. Very "New York" characters... Felt like I "know" them

Good Time (2017) - 8/10

After a bank robbery goes wrong, a guy tries to get his "slow" younger brother bailed out of jail. Entertaining...

Heaven Knows What (2014) - 7/10

Centers around a heroin-addicted girl and her "adventures" in NYC with other characters. Based on the real life of the main character, who also plays herself in the movie. Good acting... a lot of the actors were real people basically playing themselves.

Triple A 02-15-2020 04:23 AM

The Strange Thing About The Johnsons (2011) - 8/10

This is a short film (29 mins) from the director/writer of Midsommar and Hereditary

I think Toni Collette deserved a Oscar nom for Hereditary....such a fantastic performance.

Midsommar is overall a more consistent film though. Florence Pugh is also a really great actress.

Eagerly awaiting Seanny on Joker

Seanny One Ball 02-16-2020 03:35 PM

"Joker" - 4/4

I wasn't excited to see this until I was holding it in my hands. I suppose besides the troubled production history I had no detailed knowledge of it and no clue as to how the plot would be treated or how the story would be adapted this time around.
I feel confident after seeing it in full that this wasn't what anyone could have expected when they went in.
I wasn't expecting to watch an almost Freudian character study with a sympathetic take on a presumed monster. I wasn't expecting to empathise or to agree with any political or social themes but such is the quality of the film that I have to admit that I did start to wonder towards the ending just how easily reality can be twisted into folklore like that.

From the moment the film gets going you know you are watching from Arthur's point of view, everything feels a little bit off. Everything in Arthur's life is like a worse version of reality. You know Gotham is a shithole from Batman, but Arthur's Gotham is even shittier. Arthur gets one broke parent, no millionaires with private butlers here. In fact Arthur's whole life, from the way he is treated as a child to the way he is unsure of everything about himself as an adult until he finally emerges is in direct opposition with the Batman character we all know.
Arthur sees himself as the underdog and it is hard to argue in this film. His neuroses are alive on the screen, visions and versions of events can't be trusted. I was particularly enamoured with the girlfriend fantasy, I thought the way that pitch-perfect and was used to full effect. He's not out to hurt anyone, but he will because he just can't see himself honestly. He is his own unreliable narrator.
Joaquin Phoenix was physically incredible in this role, he could rival Christian Bale for The Machinist with what he does to himself here. Not only is he physically perfect though, he has every idiosyncrasy refined to an unsettling, sea-sick degree. He becomes a nervous, emaciated, misanthropic anti-hero here and in the midst of some truly appalling violence he emerges a just and true champion for those that would follow him into the Gotham of the future.

Some say there are two sides to every story but that seems low to me even just counting Joker's side.

a reserve the right to change this based on how i feel after a second viewing.

SPOILER: show
the misdirection might be the most brilliant piece of writing ive ever seen. Audiences are told prior that its about the mansons so you enter the film with built in drama but NONE of the tension is generated by the film itself; its all created by the veiwer so when the film subverts that expection and reveals that "once upon a time" was literal its a wild revelation. Never seen anyone work an audience like that.

I would hate to have the factoid spoiled prior because my concern is without the premise established externally the film has no stakes and potentially no plot.

10/10

while its true that the tension dies on repeat viewings what remains is its wonderful characters, acting, cinematography, and stage design. This is a film that gets richer over time as the individual flavors and nuances are able to shine after youve stripped the plot away.

The Godfather: 10/10

one of those movies thats its "how have i never watched this?" ADR from that era can be jarring at times and it does suffer from the fact ive seen decadesof films that built off what was done here but its objectively a work of art.

The Godfather pt2 - 10/10

what a hauntingly dark journey this was. Truly outstanding. The subplot of Don Vito in his youth juxtaposed with the final scene really highlights who Don Vito was and why all 4 of his children ultimately fail. Each are an incomplete vestige of their father. Sonny is his rage, his fearlesaness. Tommy is his loyalty. Fredo is his love. Michael is his cunning.

But each son is incomplete. Theyre swallowed by the shadow of their fathers greatness and all ultimately are alone because of it.

well...this was unfortunate. Im not sure which was more egregious the incest subplot or the helicopter machine gun attack. Feels like Puzzo wrote this while watching diehard on vacation in Kentucky. All the subtlety, nuance and symbolism from the 1st two films are gone and what is left is a cartoon version of the previous entries. The fact this was penned by the same hand is baffling.

Oh..my..fucking.god. I was expecting to be disappointed.. But prepare to get brainfucked again. This movie well, let's just say that the premise is much like Cabin in The Woods then it turns out to be a fucking horrific darker version of Marty McFly's Back To The Future storyline.. Yes, maybe I'm wrong to say it or just being generous.. And why am I saying that? Well, spoilers ahead if you wanna read or just go see it for yourself.

SPOILER: show
A. 3 strangers all had similar car fucked up accidents.. Samantha, the woman in the coat says she came from 1962 and is driving through Hampshire to go to the hospital cos she's giving birth with hubby, while the bad-ass 80's chick grocery robber Jody claims it's 1985 and she was on her way to Seattle, while Tom, the main guy says his car got stuck in a ditch and was on his way to South Dakota and it's the year 2011.

B. Samantha says she's from 1962 era cos she hasn't seen the new currency of money that was printed in 1980's on Jody's coat while she is from 1985. And Tom, well, his coat was made in 2011. Also, they even noticed the cabin had a radio that looked like it was used from World War era, plus, a bomb shelter with food/beans and liquor all dating back to fucking 1930's and 40's. All of the labels on it are in GERMAN. WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT ALL ABOUT!??!

C. Then comes another character who's a German soldier with a rifle gun and taunts the 3 strangers that all of them had the same lockets with a picture of the woman that looked like she's 30 plus... WHO THE FUCK WAS THAT?

D. And it turns out Samantha the coat woman is the one in the picture, then tells Jody, that she gave birth to a daughter with the SAME FUCKING FIRST NAME!!! And the last name unfortunately is German as well. Neumann. Also, it's later revealed the German soldier is the FATHER of the mother who gave birth to the future 80's bad-rebellious chick Jody!! HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

E. Everytime the characters try to escape the dark woods outside the cabin no matter where they go, they end up back in the cabin. I like how one of them references the fucked shit like they're in a Pac-Man level game or in a Deliverance movie.

I won't tell the ending.. I could go on and on about it.. Man, never have I enjoyed a film that's sooo fucking unexpected, I didn't see that one coming.. Also, pay attention to what happens in the start of the movie with the grocery guy being held at gunpoint and the characters keep on asking
SPOILER: show
"WHAT'S IN THE SAFE?!?"
Then, POOOF!! You're in for a fucking surprise.

8/10.

Midsommar -7/10

SPOILER: show
Tension and cinematography are good but the films broad strokes are very paint by numbers. This i could ignore if it were for the issue of the films central point: Dani is burdened by Christian and she needs to "clense the evil."

For 3 years this character emotionally blackmailed him to stay with her and yet its her who is the captive based off...him not attending to her emotional needs? And that at its core is the moral of the fairy tale we have here.

Its a fine film as far as the tone it aims to set but as a piece of writing its rubbish. Clearly written by someone who had been hurt and hastly wrote through the tears to make a point thats selfish and tone deaf. The films true saving grace is its alegory is so muddled that most viewers wont even catch the story at all.

"Ratatouille" is boss. The depiction of France is gorgeous and Janeane Garofalo kills it with her role. The bit about the sous chef giving several stories about why he was in prison is hilarious, too. It's easily in my top 5 of Pixar films.

i really love this world, characters and mythos. I follows the rythm of the original but its still fun. Would unquestionably watch another.

Also mad props for how they acknowledge the difference between legality and morality. Not that the first film didnt. But still. Its nice.

Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture- 7/10

Not particularly needed. Steps on the toes of the final season a bit. Still nice to be back with these characters all the same. Story is charming as always. Not sure how i feel about the franchise continuing. Feels like its explored everything worth exploring.

It's a good film and all but it's missing two major things that make it not as good as the original: a villain with the charisma and presence of Sindrome and a good reason as to why not age the characters. It's still not bad. I can watch that Jack-Jack/raccoon fight for ages.

The raccoon scene is great but I agree. I didn't mind the idea of picking right up where they left off. But the movie does lack the compelling villain of the first.

Color out of Space 7/10
A pretty good Lovecraftian movie with rumors of it potentially being part of a shared universe.

Fruitvale Station - It was difficult to watch. Michael B Jordan's acting was stellar.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold-7/10

Surprisingly funny, self aware and almost spoof like live action take on the cartoon, following a now teenage Dora as she tries to navigate awkwardly thru adjusting in high school only to be sucked in to another adventure.
