Midsommar 8/10

I found it fascinating; it doesn't have the same impact as Hereditary, but I have come away with the same feeling of disorientation and "WTF" as I did when I finished watching that film.

Seanny One Ball 11-01-2019 07:38 PM

"The Man Who Fell To Earth" is awful so far. No effort has been made to make the story and time line coherent, the acting styles are jarringly disparate and choices have been made with regards to presentation and aesthetics which are deeply questionable. The voice overs are the choice of a director forgetting how to tell a story. Also I didn't want to see Rip Torn's flaccid dick in a young woman's hand as she said he was "nothing like her father".
Fucking bad bad bad.

This is an off-putting film and I still have 100 minutes left.

GD 11-01-2019 07:46 PM

Zombieland: Double Tap - 7/10

Seanny One Ball 11-01-2019 07:47 PM

Every woman in this film has insane eyes and huge gums.
Candy Clark just comes off as completely mental and hideously unpleasant. I don't think an Alien would settle for her.

Seanny One Ball 11-01-2019 07:48 PM

A millionairlien

Seanny One Ball 11-01-2019 07:50 PM

I hate it when I wait years to see a film without going out of my way to buy it, stumble upon it all excited and then when I watch it it turns out to be crud.

David Bowie is the only good thing in it and he's been hung out to dry fittingly.

Seanny One Ball 11-01-2019 07:53 PM

I have absolutely no idea why Rip Torn is in this film

Seanny One Ball 11-01-2019 07:56 PM

Oh great, Bowie's pubes now.

Seanny One Ball 11-01-2019 07:56 PM

I honestly might have to turn this off. This is insufferable.

Looking forward to watching Seanny's new fav movie when I get home in a few days. Also reminded that I've wanted to see Nebraska for a while but never had the chance.

Seanny One Ball 11-01-2019 08:01 PM

I don't think it's fair to expect a viewer to endure Candy Clark for this length of time. Especially when she has five times the dialogue that Bowie gets.

This is what killed him you know. 40 years later he died from Candy Clark exposure, just like when everybody involved in filming that John Wayne Ghengis Khan film died of cancer years later because they filmed it near that Nevada atomic bomb testing site.

Seanny One Ball 11-01-2019 08:35 PM

Man alive it is rare to see a film so wholly unappealing as this.
This is on par with "Tommy" as a film that deliberately spurns everything I hold dear in storytelling.

At least it makes sense in some ways. It's just incredibly poorly realised. It's a lot like The Deer Hunter, a story that looks good in synopsis but somehow misses every chance to connect with me in the style it was made.

Seanny One Ball 11-01-2019 09:19 PM

Thank God that's over.
That was an ordeal I should have skipped through in half an hour.

Been debating buying this.

I just doubt anything will ever scare me the way "Hereditary" did.
I don't watch a lot of horror, in fact I used to avoid it. Since I started watching it, Hereditary is the scariest one.

Terminator Dark Fate-7/10

Massive upgrade over the last number of sequels. T3 was the last decent Terminator movie, imo. And a lot of that had to with the fact that they didn't try to reinvent the wheel and just made a chase movie with time traveling robots.

Dark Fate is better than T3 simply because it's much more violent thanks to the R rating. It is a direct sequel to T2 and the opening scene establishes that from the start.

This time, we get a different take on the machine sent back to protect our new female lead, Arnold's T800 gets a new layer added to its persona in a way that makes sense, and the movie returns to the feature chase scene feel of the first three.

The new Terminator, the Rev9, has some neat new abilities, and is a better terminator than the T-X in the 3rd one.

Acton sets are fun, loud, violent and bloody. The movie doesn't try to do what Genesis did with a bunch of time travel mumbo mumbo. It does create a new thread in the timeline, but it's not overly convoluted or confusing.

T2 is one of my fave films of all time. I'm glad it finally got a solid R rated sequel. Nothing will ever live up to the first 2 but they've finally made one that works and can maybe spin off a new series.

Wesley Snipes should make more funny films.

Dolemite Is My Name - 3/4

A sympathetic bio of an enduring cultural reference and perfect example of "moment in time" film making. Dolemite, the original, is an embarrassingly bad film in modern review. I think even then it was more of a "so bad it's good" at the right time kind of film. To watch it now and expect anything other than that is a misunderstanding of why it mattered, why it was successful and why oh why anybody spent their time, effort and money making it.

All of those questions are answered with Eddie Murphy's new bio of the man behind the blaxploitation. In this film we see Rudy Ray Moore exploit an exploitative genre using a character he stole from an alcoholic hobo and yet we are shown why and how this is fair and also a huge boost to many people. The good balances out the bad, much like the film in question and the man behind it.

The performances of Snipes and Murphy are polar opposites but they work brilliantly, Snipes takes more than his fair share of the laughs and to be honest it is great seeing him do comedy.

I would recommend this, it is quite sweet as well as funny.

GD 11-02-2019 09:59 PM

How did I not recognize Snipes :nono:

Terminator: Dark Fate - 7.5/10

Was very fun, and like Damian Rey said, the best since the first two, and the only one really worth watching since T3. (Though I need to give Salvation another opportunity)

My gut reaction to it is that I think that they did sacrifice making a possible better movie without Arnold to shoehorn Arnold into it.... that it could have been a better story without him...... but I might change my mind on this, and it isn't like I'm ever really disappointed to see Arnold.

I loved Arnold in this. It made sense what they did with him and how they added anotherlater to his consciousness. And he wasn't useless against a superior model. Much like against the T1000, he could overpower it with brute force.

But I admit I'm a sucker for Arnold.

El Vaquero de Infierno 11-03-2019 03:59 PM

Olympus Has Fallen 7.2/10
London Has Fallen 7/10

Nothing special, but as mindless action films, they do the job. They also don't have the shaky camera and up-close action sequences that usually spoil action films these days, which is a plus.

John Wick 3 - 9/10

Great, mindless fun. Ideal for how I am right now. Needed no thinking and shit, just good, brutal stuff. Sweet. And Halle Berry is still hot.

SPOILER: show
The scenes with the horses were great, patting them so they kick the enemy.

Stupid things - enemies coming at him one at a time, especially those dudes with knives once he got to Morocco. But that's typical action movie stuff, so it was expected.

Oh, and fuck that Asia Kate Dillon thing. Fuck them and their non-binary, pansexual ways. You ugly as fuck, whether you're a dude or a chick.

Spiderman: Far From Home - 4/4

From the hilarious and satisfying take on the "Blip" and the age disparity it creates to the wealth of situational visual gags, the opening of this film is as strong if not stronger than any Marvel film. The interplay between characters and the rapport of the cast is the strength of every great film and this has as much realism in interaction as an Alexander Payne film stripped of the undercurrent.
I particularly love how Tony Stark has become almost a deity and his little message to Peter is just lovely stuff.

Samuel L lays it on very thick as Nick Fury and I'm not really into it so I kinda wish he wasn't involved and Cobie Smulders looks like death warmed up, but those are the only two minor quibbles I have.
Thankfully Martin Starr was there to take the edge off and Ned as usual provides comedy relief for the comedy relief.

I think Zendaya is decent enough but I was more impressed with the girl who played Betty, I think MJ has been underwritten to an extent so hopefully they embed the character a bit deeper into the next story because she should be involved more.

Mysterio kept me guessing, Jake Gyllenhaal has that wonderful ability to turn on a sixpence that great actors should but only a few do or can. I'm glad to see him back in a Blockbuster, just to show he can pick whatever project he wants.

I loved it.

Seanny One Ball 11-18-2019 08:16 PM

Oh, I forgot to mention how immersive the CGI is when it finally comes to the trippy illusions. I would havd loved to have seen that in HD.
I think Mysterio is either the best or certainly one of the best villains in any of the individual Avengers films.

It's no Aquaman

Seanny One Ball 11-18-2019 09:15 PM

1/4 = 12.5% - 25%
1.5/4 = 25% - 37.5%
2/4 = 37.5% - 50%
2.5/4 = 50% - 62.5%
3/4 = 62.5 - 75%
3.5/4 = 75% - 87.5%
4/4 = 87.5 - 100%

I know that looks crazy but that's how I justify my 4/4 "perfect" scores.

Good on you, it's great fun and I was planning on watching it again fairly soon.

It's too long though and Amber Heard and Nicole Kidman were awful casting choices

Still, it does have Willem Dafoe on a seahorse.

Lock Jaw 11-18-2019 09:25 PM

I'm just joking, leaning into the meme that I love Aquaman (which I did really enjoy it, but it was blown to meme proportions by Guru Dave).

I did love Far From Home too. Might finally have been a Spider-Man film to top the first two Tobey films for me.

Seanny One Ball 11-18-2019 09:39 PM

These are far better in my opinion. Spiderman is probably my favourite Avenger besides Ant Man now.

Seanny One Ball 11-18-2019 09:46 PM

Spiderman has arguably had the best two villains in the solo MCU films.

Seanny One Ball 11-18-2019 09:58 PM

One thing I noticed was a couple of quite subtle references to Flash having an awful lonely home life. I dunno why but when Peter uses Edith for the first time you can see Flash texting his mother or father saying he hasn't heard from them for days. Then at the end he gets picked up by a chauffeur and asks about them to a negative response.

These are moments that are not acknowledged but show how well fleshed out Spiderman's world is.

Looks like Richard Kelly(Donnie Darko, Southland Tales) is directing a Rod Serling biopic. That's an interesting choice and quite a good one.
I wonder who he'll cast. Rod Serling looked 45 until he actually was so you don't want someone too youthful but they need to have a strong, sombre voice and powerful facial features.

Sam Rockwell or Patrick Wilson would be interesting.
I think Jason Patric would be a great shout based on look though.

KNIVES OUT - 9.5/10

So fun and a good whodunit. Great cast, good story, funny. One of the best films of 2019 imo possibly.
