Who do I have a peculiar fixation on?
|
Oh wait is she one of those "they/them" asswipes?
Ugh. |
Well she is so ugly she has to become plural to handle it. Like when The Guardians Of The Galaxy all hold hands to endure the power of the tesseract.

The Ritual - 7/10
|
The British horror on Netflix? I thought it was excellent even if it turns into something else entirely by the end. I love British psychological horrors involving expeditions into the woods or camping.
It's a whole genre now and Britain seems to have the market on it. |
I watched "Widows" last night and while it really does deserve a full review, all I came to say is that Viola Davis and Daniel Kaluuya are two of the most entertaining and realistic actors nowadays and I am envious of their talent.
Viola Davis is at the top of her game constantly now. She's breathtaking. |
Before Midnight 8.3/10
I think people tend to see this as the weakest of the three films, presumably because it does not tap into some form of wistful romanticism like the others, but I think both Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy give their strongest performances of the series in this film. |

Joker - 9/10
Joaquin Phoenix deserves an Oscar nom. This movie is about mental health & why it's so important. Superb sound, production design & cinematography. This is a different Gotham than you've seen. The last 30 minutes of the film are completely nuts and iconic cinema. |
Peterloo 5/10
Laboured, heavy-handed, and riddled with clichés. |
Joker - 8/10
|
Joker- 7/10
very good. Heavily influenced by taxi driver. Which isnt to say it doesnt have some of its own ideas. It does. And its engaing throughout. Worth a watch. Phillips best work in this film as a director is getting out of Pheonix's way. Leaving the camera on him for long takes and just letting him work. |
Watching "Jodorowsky's Dune" again, one of the more revealing film documentaries ever made, especially since it is about a film that never was made.

Never Grow Old - 3.5/4
A bad tempered independent Western full of ugliness and mean spirit that ends with one of the most simply written and beautifully played emotional exchanges I have ever seen. Don't confuse this with a revenge thriller, it has all of the key components but this is a morality tale all the way. A redemption film. The protagonist is a good but conflicted and put upon man who must overcome his reticence to come good in the end. Emile Hirsch at his finest is unquestionably one of the best actors in the world, and here he is as good as I have ever seen him. He has John Cusack to play off, a John Cusack that in small films has become so much more than the awful leading man that somehow dominated the quirkier mainstream films of the 90's. I like Cusack a lot in this. He has the look of an old school heel wrestler in the best way possible. I don't know what on earth they did to his face but his eyes look mental and his skin has the pallor of death. He reins his acting in appropriately too, only showing mania in glimpses as his cohorts in the movie provide plenty of camp themselves. I have to say I wasn't expecting a masterpiece but this came very close, the plot is typical Western fare in that a town has changed from good to bad and now it is about to descend into hell with the arrival of some even more heinous strangers. It's nothing new but it is expertly paced in the act progression. There isn't much fat on this, it is a lean and mean piece of film making where you can see that the money has been put in all of the right places proving yet again that practical special effects are always worth using in the right hands. Great performances across the cast, excellent use of material and surroundings and quite possibly the first appropriate non-comedic use of a blunderbuss in film history. |
Joker-9/10
I got what I expected and more. This movie does not try to promote, glorify or justify a triggered individual with mental health issues going over the edge. It is a dark, grim, hopeless and brutal 2 hour film about a man with a start to life so tragic, you realize he never had any real chance to be more than what he is. SPOILER: show In the end, I walked out having enjoyed the movie. But it is not a fun movie. It is a contrast to the Dark Knight, where a hero sacrifices himself to take the fall for the betterment of his city, and in doing so, instills hope in the future of Gotham. Joker instead only promises a bleak, grim era of the city that, given the theme of the oppressed uprising, is only going to get worse. Joaquin Phoenix is magnetic. Like any small scale Phoenix film, he's virtually in every single scene, and he owns every frame. The character's progression to several bad days, feeling depressed and hopeless, to embracing and relishing in the Joker persona, is top notch work from him. I would hope he gets an Oscar nod. |
Netflix's 1922 - 6/10
|
The Fast and The Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw - 8/10
A delightful romp of over the top action. Turn off your brain and enjoy. I did feel like the Hobbs/Shaw interactions/bickering was a bit much at time and kept expecting them to kiss. Would have bumped it up to a 9 |
Oh, and I also learned that "Uso" is "brother"
|
Only realizing now that Lock Jaw might not know anyone who’s not white or Jewish.
|
Why, is he a nazi concentration camp guard?
|
Yes, he’s Kate Winslet.
|
Why would this occur to you in this thread? Something to do with Hobbs & Shaw?

Watching the start of El Camino before I walk the dog.
Like slipping on a beloved jacket worn only for comfort but which still looks good as long as you don't wear out it's welcome. |
|
I know that's unlikely to spoil, I just was so happy
|
They came at this at the right angle. Well fucking played.
I no longer want to walk the dog. Ugh. I have to though. |
Still not walking dog. Was going to watch the first 20mins.
46 minutes in now. |
This will be 3.5/4 at least.
There have been too many "Breaking Bad level" scenes for it not to be brilliant all the way through. This is a gift. |
El Chicano-5/10
Story of a police officer who discovers his brother, once thought to have taken his own life, was actually murdered while attempting to take up the mantle of El Chicano, a masked vigilante who took down bad guys in the ghetto of East L.A.. Was initially intrigued by the movie because it's a primarily Latino cast, and a Hispanic superhero seemed cool. The villain had an interesting premise. A Mexican national gang kingpin who wants to infiltrate L.A. and take back the entire state as property of Mexico. That's where the intrigue dies, unfortunately. The premise of the movie is all its got. The execution was poor. Other than a great fight scene that intros the title character, and another good scene in the final showdown, the movie lacks any depth or heft. It tries for a police procedural to set up the key pieces, but that's rushed thru to get the main character Diego into the mask. His discoveries of his brother and the ties to the Mexican mafia are convenient at best. There's no slow burn, no build up, no emotional connection to get behind the character. And the lead? What a bore. He was not charismatic at all. Stiff, uninspired line reading didn't help a bad script that was trying it's damndest to mix English and Spanish in, but instead of making it smooth and seamless, like Narcos, it es clunky, forced, and frankly, off putting. The real bummer is George Lopez plays it serious as a police chief, and is prob the best performance in the film. But we get so little time with him that it feels wasted. This movie needed to be longer and the ideas and theories needed to be more fleshed out. Instead we just get a violent mess that skips over what makes it interesting to showcase gruesome deaths and a showdown/finale so underwhelming I didn't think it could be the end. Bummer. |
Joker 8.5/10 - Really enjoyed it.... was kind of "uncomfortable" to watch, but in a good way....
El Camino 7/10 - Was alright I guess, but completely unnecessary and didn't really "add anything". Almost prefer just not knowing what happens to Jesse after the finale and leaving that open-ended. |
JEXI - 7/10
Kind of dumb, Kind of funny |

There is an element that could be mistaken for a lazy "right he needs to see these people so let's find a way to fit it in" about it but I thought it was written as smartly as it had to be to give anything back at all. The ending was probably the weakest part even though it was traditionally good. |
El Camino - 7.5/10
A nice Coda to the story of Breaking Bad and a good reminder why it's one of the best tv series of all-time. |
Anna - 3/5
Sasha Luss is pretty. But, I don't think she got much of an acting career if she keeps taking roles in Luc Besson's films. |
From Dusk Till Dawn - 8.5/10
From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money - 4/10 From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter - 6.5/10 |
If you go into from dusk till dawn knowing literally nothing the 2nd act reveal is something else
|
I knew literally nothing. Was just like "huh. Well this took a turn".
|
Quentin Tarantino is surprisingly good in his role. It's my favourite Robert Rodriguez film.
|
Well, unless you count Sin City
|
Joker - 4.5/5
|
El Camino - 6/10
|
I'm watching the Meryl Streep Panama Papers film. Gary Oldman is single handedly trying to ruin it. I think he was an awful choice.
Meryl is fantastic as always. She will forever be the greatest actor and it is easy to watch an artist so talented. |
Absolutely incredible scene on the nature of familial negotiations.
|
Linklater would look at that scene and lose his shit with envy.
|
I wish I hadn't seen that through. That was awful
Meryl you are too good to be in it. |
Wounds was freaking weird. Dakota Johnson is unwatchable.
|
El Camino - 7/10
Tension is great. Acting is good. The film doesnt have a point though and the protagonist doesnt have an arc. Its and entertaining watch but ultimately its fan service without any semblance of meaning. If youre a fan of the show and want to hangout in that world again give it a watch. You wont be missing much to skip it and wont be gaining much to have seen it but there are worse ways to spend an afternoon |
Gemini Man - 7/10. Wasn't bad, but something about it just didn't quite connect with me. I think some of the acting was a bit on the weak side, but a somewhat solid action flick none ther less.
|
Girl On The Third Floor - 6/10
1st half of the movie is sort of bad but 2nd half gets pretty gory/twisted. CM Punk isn't cringeworthy but he is also sort of really cringeworthy. |
The new Eddie Murphy Dolemite film on Netflix is both a great bio and helluva good laugh. Murphy is great but special props to Wesley Snipes for coming in and livening the film up by setting an incredibly high standard of comedy.
Wesley Snipes should make more funny films. |
Clearly I need to watch the real Dolemite
|
You know when movies take old footage and repurpose it like Kung Pow: Enter The Fist?
Has anyone ever had new footage be shot and dubbed over with classic audio? That could be great. |
The ending to Netflix' Dolemite is pure Hollywood magic. Absolutely marvellous, I really loved it as a whole.
|
Watching "Videoman" tonight, a Swedish film about a downtrodden VHS collector.
I'm basically looking into the future. |
"My basement is a time machine"
"Vinyl sales are on the rise" |
Someone stole one of his tapes. I'm fucking furious.
|
There's a lot going on in this film. It's downbeat but funny, uncomfortable but endearing and somehow it has a deeply rooted horror vibe despite the overall optimism.
It's confused, like the characters it venerates. |
I also have Holy Motors and Seven Samurai to get through but I'm not sure my psyche can handle another leap into the unknown tonight.
|
This is something else. I think if it's possible to fall in love with a film, I just did.
|
Top marks for the best post coital argument ever.
|
Top marks for the best awkward lunch ever.
|
Starting to get a little bit terrifying now.
|
Ahahahahaha fucking hell.
Genius. Fucking genius. 4/4 |
This is the best representation of alcoholism and alcoholics you'll ever see in a film.
It's woven through the fabric of the film and I was hoping it would be used impactfully when the chance arose. Wonderful. A masterpiece. |
What film are you even talking about now?
|
Videoman
|
Dragon with Donnie Yen is great. It's like "A History Of Violence" with a sense of humour.
|
It gets pretty damned dark actually... arguably darker than Cronenberg's AHOV in some ways. Interesting, it's still a lot of fun action-wise.
|
Dolemite Is My Name-8/10
Eddie Murphy is hilarious and magnetic. His charisma comes thru in prob one of his best comedy films. Hilarious at every turn but also heartfelt, and written well enough that you can't helpbut root for the characters. Wesley Snipes also turns up and he's hilarious as well. Loved it. |

Nah, fuck it, every movie that isn't in English pisses me off. Yes, that includes those in Polish. |
Zombieland 2 - 8/10 - My hopes were not very high, but I was pleasantly surprised. Not as good as the original, but comes much closer than almost all sequels tend to. Emma Stone is a goddess and the wrinkle of Breslin now being an adult is a nice twist on the group dynamic.
|
Buster's Mal Heart was dreadfully pretentious and deliberately vague to the point of convincing me it had nothing to say and so was trying to bluff the viewer into interest or enjoyment.
I'm disappointed it has decent reviews because it is a perfect load of shite. |
The Night Comes For Us is 30 minutes in and I can already tell it's up there with The Raid in terms of choreography and The Raid 2 in terms of storyline strength.
The violence is shockingly vivid. I think it's time for a martial arts film deep dive. |
I think I'll go hard on the Donnie Yen and Iko Uwais, the two best right now.
|
Quote:
I honestly think an accomplished horror director would struggle to better the exceptional use of visceral gore this film has. Almost any time there's an emotional ante up the film slams some gruesome "reality" back in there. |
Some of the gorier parts are really quite disgusting
|
That was exhausting. No more fighting tonight, I need a comedy.
|
Picked up "The Man Who Fell To Earth" today, been hoping to see that somewhere for at least a couple of years. I also picked up "Altered States" and "Hunt For The Wilderpeople".
Very nearly bought the original Village Of The Damned too but it was way overpriced. |
Watching "Hunt For The Wilderpeople".
This will need a full review. I swear I saw this once but none of this stuff happened in it and it wasn't very funny. I think I was still drinking back then though so it was either a dream or I watched something else and got confused. Anyway 30 minutes in and it has a good heart and brilliantly funny lines. Lovely stuff. The guy in the shop actually went out of his way to talk the other film up as I bought it. I'm going to mail the chain's head office and talk him up. |
Love the movie.
|
The laugh count is unbelievably high with a story like this. This is effectively Leave No Trace but with real wit and snappy dialogue.
I love everything about it so far. |
Dave I'm dying here. This is one of the funniest films ever made.
|
This is likely a top 20 film of all time for me, possibly top 10.
I haven't felt like this since Nebraska. |
Now I want to rewatch it tonight.
|
It's hilarious but it also fills my heart.
|
I very nearly burst into tears there.
Held it in. Now my eyes are all fucked up. |
It was definitely my film of 2016.
|
I still have to watch:
Holy Motors Seven Samurai Altered States The Man Who Fell To Earth The Eiger Sanction Mr Smith Goes To Washington The Runaways To watch but I just keep neglecting them and buying more. |
Hunt For The Wilderpeople - 4/4
My new favourite film. I will review it properly when I stop crying and punching the air. |
Hunt For The Wilderpeople is 90 something minutes of straight fun. It was fun but nice, dark in parts but totally safe and understanding too. The dynamic between the actors was natural and easy, the film is smooth all the way through.
In terms of what it made me feel this is an example of brilliant manipulation done for all of the right reasons. No tears were drawn for an inadequate cause and no laughs were cheaply obtained. I felt like no matter what happened, these guys were robust enough to handle it. |
