Ryus Hadoken would be useless in a 3d engine, you just tap a direction to dodge sideways and commence to beat downs. Same with the hurricane kick, it would lock him into a long animation in 1 direction, could be easily dodged, and then result in getting your ass handed to you with no ability to defend. Yoshimitsu could literally sidestep and charge up his 1 hitter while Ryus animation played out and then cut him down instantly. Its a difficult issue to work around without breaking the fiction and changing the fighting style of the SF roster to fit the engine better. Youd have to remove a lot of special moves and replace them with combos and cancels. |
Interesting tidbit there about the FF7 remake. It makes me wonder if they scrapped the idea for it to be episodic and are releasing the full story as a single package since they finished the voice work for the "main game" and not episode 1.
|
Still planned to be broken into episodes. Some speculation the producer might have meant only the 1st episode was almost done or easier for them to do it all at once instead of waiting for future episodes for voice work.
|
Indeed. I was taking it as the games voice work was done for the main scenario and they just needed to do the voicework for sidequests and other miscellany.
Sucks that its gonna be episodic still. Thats gonna KILL me when I hit the end of episode 1. Been waiting so long for this. |

EA Access has a free trial of Mass Effect Andromeda, if anyone hadn't heard. (y)
|
Yeah, experience the jankfest first hand. It's pretty hilarious.
|
|
Minor animation issues are not going to ruin it. As long as the gameplay is solid, I can deal with some jank.
|
Yeah, it just depends what you want out of a Mass Effect game. I've always found the combat to be drab and repetitive and OH THERE'S SOME WAIST HIGH WALLS, BET I SHOOT SOME FUCKS, so I usually just turn it down to casual to get through them faster and carry on with the story. Combat is better, but it's still just there for me. Problem is, when your character is smiling like a goof while saying someone close to them died takes me out of that part of the game.
The biggest sins so far from the trial are the awful character creation (which is getting patched apparently) and the god awful interface. you have to go through 5 screens to change your active quest because they're split into stupid folders, then realise you can't track that yet and have to repeat the process to change it. Then planet scanning takes an age because for some reason, they're really proud of their planet changing animation and you have to sit through it without skipping. Still, because I love the series, I'm going to treat it like a Matrix sequel. Sure, it's not very good, but godammit, I still want to finish it. I'll probably put it down after the trial and pick it up in the summer when things are a bit quieter. Got Nier, Horizon and Persona 5 which all play better to get through first and I'm still exploring that Zelda world. |

Not a ME fan or anything but I feel this game is getting a lot more shit for animated fuck ups than a lot of games with equally silly fuck ups.
|
The animation just looks really off from top to bottom. I played through ME3 recently and it's a notable downgrade. Plus people just look really weird all the time. When you're trying to do a game that's about connecting with characters, it all falls down.
|
Quote:
|
It feels "clunky" but not nearly game/immersion breaking. Kalyx is right in terms of other titles having similar issues.
I've enjoyed it so far for what it is. |
Please name an example, it really is stand out bad. It's notable because you take certain standards of animation for granted today. If it isn't people being modelled out of proportion or eyes bugging out of heads, it's lip syncing like Pingu.
|
Well proportions are hard to objectively judge since that's all on the general art direction and perhaps they were going for something more expressive in certain games.
In my view very few games have ever truly nailed lip syncing and I don't even gauge that in any game anymore. GTA tends to be high quality in this regard, tho. |

Thats awful. The ME3 model appears superior in every single way. Resolution, lighting, textures, poly count, general realism....I cant find one thing about the Ryder model that looks better than the Shepherd model.

The whole thing just reeks of stupid decisions by EA. Just look at the timeline. 1) The guys that did Mass Effect want to do a new IP. Neat, but we can't be without the big IP, so find someone else to work on it 2) Take the studio that made such, uh, "hits" as Boogie Superstar, Spore Hero and The Sims 3: High-End Loft Stuff and get them to do ME3 multiplayer content 3) You're now ready to make a big game after that string of successes, clearly! Start work in 2012 on the new Mass Effect 4) Several years pass without a peep 5) It's 2017 and the game still isn't done. Considering the unfinished animation, bugs galore and already said character creation wasn't finished and will be patched, but EA has given them 5 years and they need it out this financial year What a mess. |
The timeline isn't really the issue here from my perspective. They had 5 fucking years to do a sequel to an already established franchise and were basically given complete creative liberty with the new setting. I've been eagerly awaiting this game and now......now I don't know.
I bet when MS first lost console exclusivity with Mass Effect they were probably a bit upset. Now I bet they are like THANK GOD. |
FFS all they had to do was use the same engine and animations from ME3 with increased resolution and better textures/lighting effects bolstered by the increased power of new gen systems.
|
That want going to happen since EA doesn't use Unreal anymore.
Still, the Dragon Age team could have shared their animation best practice in Frostbite. |
Indeed.

1:1 proportions to actual human bodies is at worst difficult and actually at best non-ideal. For reasons I've spent a lot of my time reading about. I have an interest in this side of the industry, you see. Would you like to know more? I really hate to come off defending a developer who I find currently pathetic and riding on their name brand but I'm telling you this is overblown. There's way better cases to make about Bioware and what they did to their two main franchises. |
That's just one tiny thing, but please show me some art where it's desirable for someone to have arms that are half a foot short. It's just one drop of rain in the flood. Every conversation you look at in the game, the direction, animation, framing, lighting, delivery is all just weird. It just looked rushed and amateurish. Mass Effect previously was a series with lavish production value.
I'm sorry if your higher order brain is too advanced to perceive what normal human behaviour is supposed to look like. I'm sure, however, you've worked out there's some sort of agenda going on here, and I'd love to know what it is. |

inb4 "its sports so its okay" and/or "it isnt bioware so its okay"
|
Not really sure what's going on here. Do you have an Andromeda pre-order?
|
Negative.
|
Okay, what's my angle, then?

90.

But yeah, they showed it to be laughed at, which is what everyone is doing to ME:A. |

"it's not as bad as you say, for reasons" is literally what you just said |
Jesus.
Gather around children... - I'm not saying it's not bad, I'm saying a) animation issues have been in other games but it seems this game is getting picked apart, b) the character models do not have to be 1:1 scale to actual humans and sometimes for good reason. - I'm not defending bioware. - I asked if he would like to know more. Non-answers don't invite more discussion. - In many 3rd person games you will find that the 3D characters models, not the concept art, Rog you dwarf, the 3D character models are scaled based on what you are going to be looking at over 90% of the time. This means they are not as tall as they should be, this means their backs are wider, this means their arms are shorter. It means a few things very few of which is having a 1:1 human body scale model. - Fighting games do not give a fuck about proportions, famously. Zelda doesn't care. Halo doesn't care. GTA tends to be spot on. Sports simulations tend to be accurate for obvious reasons. It's not good or bad it depends on art direction and what the game needs for a playable avatar. - In FPS you're not even controlling a whole body, its a camera with floating arms holding a gun and sometimes a magic lower torso. An avatar is added when another player's cam looks at you, but the puppet they see is not what you are currently controlling. This means... the proportions of the arms and legs are actually different FROM IT'S OWN AVATAR IN THE SAME GAME. HOLY SHIT. Yadda yadda this is old. - I do not mean to sound condescending, I rather to have explained that character models do not have to be realistic. I'm wondering why you guys expect ME to represent realistic character models. To my knowledge Bioware expressed no such desire. - The reason I'm not wasting my time showing a pic of Bayonetta or Chris Redfield is because finding evidence of other off proportion characters does not do anything for anybody. Even if you think I need that to win, so I should score an easy 'win', it's besides the point. Because we don't know that Bioware either don't care, have gameplay reasons for the proportions, or hell actually wanted it 1:1 but just sucked at it. But one thing's for sure: If you think 1:1 body proportions is some kind of objective goal there's too many games to show otherwise. |
A lot of waffle. Does any of that relate to Mass Effect? It tries to portray realistic/Hollywood humans, viewed in third person in cutscenes that would require normal proportions. For some reason you've decided that everyone's suddenly gone mental and decided to pick on this game, again, I'd ask for your theory on why I've ignored these issues in thousands of other games and suddenly started picking on Mass Effect Andromeda.
|
It's entirely on you that you believe cutscenes 'require' realistic proportions. And you just completely made up this 'realistic/hollywood' 3D model standard. Bioware never told you this was a thing for them.
If I had to guess I'd say you're harping on this because it's hip to do so atm. And I'm most interested in the lack of gameplay assessment now that the demo is out. |
'Waffle'. I just told this guy how this shit works and he's like "lots of waffle". Once again Kalyx who's Serious Business about his nerdy games somehow doesn't know what he's talking about in the very subject.
|
No you're right. It's an artistic vision to have the whole thing look like Team America. I am just too dense to get it.
The gameplay will be passable. It's Mass Effect. |
