Really want a Mega Man X Legacy Collection. Enough of the NES rereleases already.

RP 12-22-2016 11:32 PM

Im really thinking about buying one of these mini Nintendo's and picking up one of those games that has like 50 games loaded on it.

RP 12-22-2016 11:33 PM

I really wanna go hard on Contra and Super Contra right now.

I don't think you can use actual nes cartridges with it.

RP 12-23-2016 01:04 AM

weird how do they sell games or in what form i guess?

Fignuts 12-23-2016 01:11 AM

It comes preloaded with 30 games. That's all you get. The appeal is all about the novelty, because there are way better ways to play all these games.

I was excited when it was first announced but the the more I thought about it, the more I realized it is just a nerdy paper weight.

road doggy dogg 12-23-2016 09:09 AM

I never really got excited about that thing. Most of the NES games I would want to play are available on Virtual Console, cartridge (assuming not super rare), or worst-case I'd just emulate it

Sepholio 12-23-2016 03:27 PM

Not to mention thee controller has to be tethered to it and the cord is only 2.5 feet long. So you literally have to be sitting close enough to the machine to touch it.

Emperor Smeat 12-23-2016 03:49 PM

Best reason I've heard for the device's appeal is mainly to go after the older crowd who don't really play video games anymore but still have memories of playing NES games as a kid. Price-wise, the games are cheaper than on the Virtual Console and elsewhere while quality wise, its supposedly the best for repro style consoles.

That is the biggest problem with it even though at least one third party company now sells extension cords/adapters for it. Feels like they wanted something of the Famicom to play a role in its design and took the worst aspect for it.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-09-2017 01:54 PM

Kotaku have a rumor up that MS might cancel Scalebound later this week. That'll be nuts.

Kalyx triaD 01-09-2017 03:26 PM

Wooooow

#BROKEN Hasney 01-09-2017 03:35 PM

Man, it sucks right now and I have no idea what MS are doing if this turns out to be true. Sure, Forza, Halo and Gears will continue as normal, but then what? Crackdown has been in limbo for years along with Scale bound, Phantom Dust got cancelled and restarted with a new dev (I think it's just a remake now?), Fable was shitcanned which leaves all hope riding on Sea of Thieves.

Surely MS have some stuff ready for E3 though. Although it's not a whole new console generation, they can't have Scorpio sent out without a big showcase for it.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-09-2017 03:39 PM

Well shit, it's official.

Yikes. That's a nice kick in the balls for Microsoft.

Guys at Sony must be laughing right now.

Kalyx triaD 01-09-2017 05:42 PM

Or cutting a deal with Kamiya.

Emperor Smeat 01-09-2017 05:56 PM

Feel bad for Platinum Games since Microsoft was asking way too much from Platinum Games than they could handle. Especially with how different Scalebound was going to be compared to their dev strengths. Doesn't seem like Microsoft bothered to lend teams or enough of them to help on the project unlike Nintendo and Star Fox Zero for recent games.

Ms cancels yet another game I would have bought. Great. Straight up I have never regretted buying a console more than I have the one.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-10-2017 01:39 AM

It's so bizarre to me in thenfscr of The Last Guardian coming out this year. Yes, I know its a business and all that, but Sony had work on that game on and off for 8 years. They couldn't get the frame rate above 15fps on the PS3 and there are accounts of Naughty Dog and Sony San Diego being sent in in to try and fix the performance in that time before the PS4 version.

And for what? A Ueda game that is amazing but flawed and they never sell that well? Scalebound may never have been good, but I had faith in it. Fable Legends was actually good and they still pulled the plug on that. Re-Core was sent out to die with 1/5th of its content missing because it wasn't allowed to miss that deadline.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-10-2017 01:53 AM

Goddamn. Someone compiled the list of MS cancellations with details. Phantom Dust:

Quote:

Microsoft wanted a longer single-player campaign; they wanted various features added and changed; they wanted Darkside to help contribute card art to the accompanying mobile game Microsoft had planned. “This kind of focus change happened on a nearly monthly basis,” said a person who worked on the game.

“They asked for things pretty quickly,” said a second person close to the studio. “We kept telling them, ‘We cannot make this game for the budget you want.’”

In the fall of last year, another obstacle popped up: one of Microsoft’s creative directors, who Darkside sources described as integral to Phantom Dust’s success, left the company. His role was never re-filled, which hurt Darkside a lot—producers at the studio had to communicate with Microsoft’s creative team on a daily basis, and he had been one of their most important connections in Redmond.
One particularly strange moment for Darkside happened around then, when Microsoft’s Ken Lobb said on a podcast that Phantom Dust would be “about a 30-hour JRPG.” The developers were baffled. That was never part of their plan. “Nobody knew he was gonna say that,” said one Darkside staffer. “We were told by people at Microsoft that Ken just does things like that.”
Obsidian's Stormlands, which was cancelled after seven months of development, leaving Obsidian in a state of near ruin, at which point they had to lay off 30 people, go to Kickstarter, start work on a f2p game, and turn the remnants of that game into Tyranny.

Then we have Scalebound, which according to several sources involved Microsoft setting very high milestones and withholding pay

http://i.imgur.com/j6LFpLX.jpg

And as a result a significant portion of Platinum workers are without a task, Kamiya on mental health leave, and the studio bereft of payment for a month of work.

Sweet. I hear there's a final beta going on starting the 21st so I'm going to try and get in on that demo and check it out. I consider buying video games an investment.

Does that count me as one of Kojima's "investors"? Or do I fall under the category of "gamer"?

Emperor Smeat 01-26-2017 06:39 PM

Gamer.

The investors stuff is Kojima mainly being upset at how much Konami kept pushing into the mobile and pachinko route at the cost of everything else which caused the split to happen. Neither route has really helped Konami and they picked a bad time to enter the pachinko market since it started its decline shortly afterwards.

Konami was getting pissed at how long MGS V was taking to develop and the amount of money being spent since they wanted to use the extra funds for pachinko related stuff instead. On one hand, they were right to be upset since Kojima wasn't getting any closer to finishing and the project was getting too expensive to continue while on the other hand, them clashing with developmental decisions is why the game starts to fall apart near the end.

Late Night News Edition:

According to Zelda seris producer Eiji Aonuma, Monolith Soft has been helping with the development of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Mostly been working on the game's world and map layout.

Also means the dev team for Breath of the Wild is likely the biggest Nintendo has ever used for a game.

Quote:

In a recent interview with Gamekult, Aonuma explained that, while Monolith assisted with graphics design and other elements in Skyward Sword, their role in Breath of the Wild was focused on topographic arrangements for the game’s vast open world.

Here’s Aonuma’s full comment about Monolith’s involvement:

“On Skyward Sword, Monolith had mainly helped us on graphics design and other artistic elements. Even though we could have asked them for help on the technical side, we realized their way of making games was completely different from ours and we didn’t have much to learn from them on this installment, since we were almost doing two different jobs. On the other hand, for Breath of the Wild, we’ve been assisted by level designers used to large game areas, in order to make topographic arrangements.”

why? a game taking long probably means it'll be better.

Same thing happened with the stick of truth. Mind you they were going through the THQ bankruptcy but it was delayed for well over a year.

Sepholio 02-10-2017 12:07 AM

I think honestly it has more to do with them probably rewriting the scenario to reflect current events. Matt and Trey are very anal about south park in that sense and they probably started reworking bits just based off of the election just like with the show.

Kalyx triaD 02-10-2017 12:37 AM

Activision thinks the setting was CoD's problem.

When they see people laugh at a WW2 or 1 CoD, after Battlefield 1, they'll see the folly of their ways. They need a year (maybe two!) off, both IW and Treyarch, to completely reevaluate how CoD should go forward as a game series. Top down.

There's a strong chance the industry itself outgrew the franchise.

#BROKEN Hasney 02-10-2017 03:07 AM

It is a shame as it's the best CoD single player campaign in years. But if you want a single player FPS, Titanfall 2 was even better.

That said, it was still the best selling game of last year even with the drop.
