Mr. Nerfect 11-11-2014 09:40 PM

I've tried watching more New Japan recently. Hiroshi Tanahashi is apparently their "John Cena," but he wrestles like freakin' Shawn Michaels. Unbelievable talent. What I saw from Kazuchika Okada was brilliant too. These two men having another match with JR calling it? Yes, please.

I would love the JR/Matt Striker commentary team. I think Striker would be able to keep JR on-point and "present" at the booth, if that makes sense, and I think Striker's character (either on purpose or in real life) could annoy JR just enough to give them an enjoyable face/heel announcer dynamic.

Mr. Nerfect 11-11-2014 09:41 PM

I'm really excited for Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Kota Ibushi too, for whatever reason. Nakamura is the man, but I haven't seen much from Ibushi. Something about it seems really fresh by Japanese standards though.

Mr. Nerfect 11-11-2014 09:44 PM

Actually, they should just sign Raven to do the color commentary.

Last night at his one-man show after the Raw taping, William Regal was asked about why he wasn't wrestling on the tour, and he revealed that he got a three level cervical fusion surgery a few months ago. It's notable that he got the three level fusion surgery, because in the past, when active wrestlers got their necks fused, they opted to fuse less than three levels together because three level fusion is a career-ender. If he's retired, and it sure sounds like he is, then he went out in style with his NXT match against Cesaro that was taped a little over a year ago and aired on the year-end show that premiered Christmas Day. Looking back, the match was worked and presented felt like a farewell, so it seems like he might have known it was the end.

William Regal is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. And that's coming from someone who doesn't buy into the "technical wrestling skill is everything" stuff. As a complete package, I'd put him as one of my all time favorites.

I hope they do a serious Regal retrospective, with some of his best matches. He had some damn fine matches with people who had completely different styles. And he saved some of his best work for the end of his career, with Cesaro and Ohno.

I'm watching the TNA One Night Only Knockout Knockdown show (filmed in May, show last week).

There's a bunch of unknown indie girls taking on the regular Knockouts. They keep showing little vignettes to introduce us to the compeitors, only they're featured on the regular Knockouts - the ones you're already familiar with if you watch TNA.

Additionally, having looked at the results, one the few indie girls to get wins over the Knockouts, Havok wasn't one of them. They've since hired her and presented her as an unstoppable force in the division...before airing this show.

Why do they tape them so far in advance!?

Emperor Smeat 11-12-2014 06:13 PM

The usual money issues that's plagued TNA ever since the Hogan era. Was a lot cheaper for them to travel 2-3 times and tape a bunch of episodes in a row than their usual weekly routine.

We previously reported that former WWE Superstar and current AAA star Alberto Del Rio had reached a settlement with WWE regarding his non-compete clause in his contract.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting both sides came to an agreement on several terms, including Alberto saying he wouldn’t sue the company, and he won’t make anymore negative comments about WWE in the media. This includes Alberto’s recent accusations of racism in WWE, which were also recently echoed by Myzteziz, formerly known as the ‘original’ Sin Cara in WWE.

In return, Alberto reportedly received a financial settlement from WWE in addition to his non-compete being dropped, leaving him free to pursue other outside bookings. This settlement apparently came at the last minute, and it was believed at one point that WWE might even be asked to issue an apology for inappropriate comments made by company employees. Apparently Alberto had already agreed to parts of the written settlement agreement regarding the financial issues and non-compete status so he didn’t push the apology.

WWE has been worried about keeping their Hispanic audience, and officials wanted to take care of things with Alberto so they wouldn’t be tied to any claims of racism against Hispanics.
Quote:

Regarding Tyson Kidd’s push on the midcard, he’s been working elements into his gimmick that are inspired by friend and controversial indie star Teddy Hart.

Triple H is reportedly high up on the gimmick. With that and Total Divas producers high on segments with Kidd and Natalya, it’s expected that Kidd’s push will continue at least into the next season.
Quote:

On a related note, Vince McMahon has reportedly “been over” the current storyline with The Bella Twins, but it’s there to help co-promote Total Divas.
Quote:

While multiple sources have reported that Cesaro did not receive backstage heat from his recent interview comments about John Cena vs. Randy Orton, his recent booking has some people thinking otherwise within WWE.

Some of those same people questioning how Cesaro is being booked feel that the roster is short on heels and Cesaro should be used to make an impact.

On a related note, Cesaro was put through concussion testing after needing staples in the head last week. He obviously was cleared.
Quote:

Ring Of Honor officials confirmed that the Bobby Fish & Kyle O'Reilly IWGP jr. tag title defense against Alex Shelley & Kushida, Rocky Romero & Alex Koslov and Young Bucks match will be on the U.S. version of the PPV.

As of a few days ago, the match had been planned as a dark match before the U.S. version of the show started due to ROH not signing off on the deal
ROH management backed off on their no ROH stars stance for the US feed because of GFW running it. In terms of US stuff, the ban on ROH wrestlers showing up for PWG events starts next year.

Random idea for the WWE Network. Keep in mind I'm not too up-to-date on how this sort of technology works.

The WWE apparently hasn't reached its target subscribers, and have actually lost only a few less than they gained. Since the start of the Network launching, I've seen pundits saying that they expect that PPVs will begin costing things even on the Network at some point.

But instead of that, I was thinking that the WWE could make payment for live specials "optional." You can choose to pay what you want for an event ordered through the Network, and some of the profits could go to a chosen charity working with the WWE. For example, the WWE could donate a percentage of what they make extra on Hell in a Cell to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

They can still give away ones that are entirely free, like Survivor Series, which can be called the WWE's "Thanksgiving" to its millions of fans. But even shows like NXT's live specials can have the option of fans paying money to support that product, and the funding can go towards the Performance Centre, NXT rookies, the production crew, Full Sail University, etc. I can just imagine Triple H smiling as he hands over a new expensive piece of lab equipment to Full Sail, donated by the fans of NXT. People could opt to pay for a potential free NXT live special because they want to send the message that this is their chosen style of wrestling show. Imagine if NXT Takeover made more money than Night of Champions?

Would that be enough to make up for the WWE falling short of their desired number of subscribers? Or is that an entirely insane idea from a guy who doesn't know what he is talking about?

It's not really a question of the technology, more understanding what the customer will go for.

If they can't get people to pay $9.99 for everything (including PPV events, NXT specials, and so on) they sure as hell won't get people to sign up if they then have to pay more on top.

You're basically trying to raise more money (regardless that it's for charity) from the subscribers you do have, whilst making the whole thing less appealing for the customers you haven't converted.

I'd bet you'd lose more in revenue from the subscribers that say "FUCK THAT!" and cancel (especially now they're not tied in for 6 months) than you would make from those willing to pay for specific events.

#1-norm-fan 11-14-2014 05:28 AM

Thinking adding the PPVs to it was daft, you look at everything you're getting without the PPVs and most folk who got it probably still would have, you would still have the PPV money coming in but with the Network to fall back on if they needed it, even if they only got 3/400k subscribers its all profit essentially.

Droford 11-14-2014 11:47 AM

Most people wouldn't have paid $10 for just the back catalog of ppv and DVDs because its mostly available for free elsewhere.

What I figure will eventually happen is WWE will sell the streaming rights of everything but the ppvs to Hulu/Netflix and then sell the streaming ppvs themselves for $10.
