This is one of the things that sticks out to me watching Memphis wrestling. The heels gets a beatdown long enough to get heat, and then a bunch of faces, led by Lawler, would come in to save a day. Sometimes it's just Lawler himself, but it gets a bigger point across. Poor sap in the ring getting his ass kicked but he's a good guy, and people don't want to see the good guy get hurt. And when Lawler comes out, it says to the audience that he sticks up for the little guy. By leading a charge, it says to the audience that he is the kind of person every other good guy looks up to and they'll back him up because of it.

That does more than declaring yourself the Big Dog or having "good matches." Wrestling is a visual medium. Show, don't tell. Wrestling as an Athletic Performance will always make less money than Wrestling as a Morality Play.

They're stuck in the Attitude era mentality, even though they're actively trying to get away from the things that made that work.

Ol Dirty Dastard 07-17-2018 02:15 PM

Vince and co. do not understand the basic premise of show don't tell. Every promo is exposition. It's infuriating.

Mr. Nerfect 07-17-2018 02:21 PM

It's not only exposition, but it's often redundant exposition. I noticed it a few years ago, but Seth Rollins cut the same promo on the same show twice, and to get to that point they didn't need it in the first place.

Plus, it's often exposition in the form of an inauthentic, pantomimic soliloquy. People don't trade zingers like they try to get their talent to. They all look like fucking losers. Give me someone foaming at the mouth that is less concerned with being verbally articulate and more concerned having some actual fucking pride in themselves.

ROMAN IS THE BIG DOG AND IT'S HIS YARD AND BROCK CHEATED TO WIN.

- Every Roman Reigns promo since the year began

Ol Dirty Dastard 07-17-2018 02:26 PM

Exposition is sometimes necessary but should always be used sparsely. It's the very definition of telling instead of showing... or even worse, telling and showing as a way to tell the fans the reaction you want from the.

NO ONE HAS MORE OF A POINT THAN THE BIG DOG

Who lost to Bobby last night, and keeps losing to Brock

Does he even say that he's cheating to win? Isn't it closer to "Yeah, I got my ass kicked. I don't know why I'm getting another shot, frankly I don't care, I'm just The Big Dog and I'm ready for a Big Fight."

Exactly.

One of the biggest problems with WWE is that they look down on the intelligence of their audience. They think kids are stupider than they are, and can't attract them, so they end up doing on the nose exposition with a bunch of 38+ men.

Mr. Nerfect 07-17-2018 02:35 PM

WWE has literally forgotten that the idea of a fight is to win it without getting beaten up.

Something in WWE booking that occurred to me recently that's very telling of Vince's mentality - how often do you hear about male babyfaces being "best friends"?

Female wrestlers are routinely "best friends", and male heels (Zayn and Owens, Jericho and Owens) are routinely described as best friends - but Reigns? Cena? Lashley? AJ Styles? Do these people have "best friends"? No - and I think it's because Vince sees friendship, or any sort of emotional connection to another person, as emotional weakness and unmanly, and assumes the audience would agree.

So you end up with heels that feel like real, fleshed out human beings, while the babyfaces are cookie-cutter "rebels" going it alone, because Vince thinks fans will only relate to a face that's "sticking it to the man".

Even when they do establish friendships, another big problem is they rarely have their bigger stars help out their friends when needed the most. Cena being the biggest offender of this.

Or when they do get involved, it just comes off as trying to get some cheap cheers than the big face star being concerned over the wel-lbeing of his pals. Reigns has been an offender of this in recent years.

Mr. Nerfect 07-17-2018 02:54 PM

They have so many continuity problems. Kurt Angle is a glaring example of this. They make him out to be the biggest fucking idiot as General Manager.

Mr. Nerfect 07-17-2018 02:54 PM

They forget that your babyfaces have to do likable things and that just acting as if a babyface is a babyface isn't enough.

Evil Vito 07-17-2018 03:12 PM

More time has passed between Brock Lesnar's WWE return to present day (6 years, 3 months) than between Brock's last match before going to UFC and his WWE return (4 years, 10 months).

Seems weird that it's been that long. Mostly because the product has felt the fucking same for nearly the entire time Lesnar's been back and, frankly, probably a couple of years before that.

Anybody Thrilla 07-17-2018 03:47 PM

Andrade "Cien" Almas is the fucking man. Zelena Vega is amazing. Almas is who I would eventually have dethrone AJ, but not for a few more months.

Drawing blanks on who else could.

Wait, all those guys are in the WWE?

Sixx 07-17-2018 03:56 PM

he'd sound cooler in Poland. Cien means SHADOW.

Sixx 07-17-2018 04:02 PM

I've been watching a shitload of wrestling today. More than in a long long time.

Not whole matches, though. Top Ten lists like "Top 10 most embarassing repackages" etc.

If not Shinsuke, which is clearly isn't, I really can't think of anyone else either. Not on the heel side, anyway.

Emperor Smeat 07-17-2018 04:10 PM

Rusev?

WWE just needs to get fully behind him to build up his star power more since he already has the crowd invested in him.

Had Bryan not been relegated to tag stuff, he would be another great choice to dethrone Styles now.

Samoa Joe isn't injured, they just haven't used him on TV lately.
Joe could be a good 'heel champ' for brand blue.

Sixx 07-17-2018 04:30 PM

Now I started watching matches.

Taker vs Hardy in a ladder match. That's interesting.

Sixx 07-17-2018 04:55 PM

Hey, hes there even been a Royal Rumble match where they could also pin nd submit someone? I used to do that on my N64.

No but Macho Man once tried to pin someone during a Rumble. Then again Macho Man also once eliminated himself during one as well. Might have even been from the same Rumble.

Mr. Nerfect 07-17-2018 05:32 PM

Joe could do it. I'm fine with Styles taking it into Mania against Bryan though. Almas can beat Bryan for it.

Mr. Nerfect 07-17-2018 06:14 PM

If Styles takes the belt into WrestleMania, he will surpass Shawn Michaels, CM Punk, Randy Savage, Brock Lesnar, Triple H and Bret Hart in total days spent as WWE Champion on the way. They make for interesting story beats as you march towards whoever wins the Rumble and challenges Styles.

He's always had pretty skinny legs, part of the reason he always wore long pants.

Sixx 07-17-2018 06:52 PM

Ah, I see.

That was not me laughing at him, by the way, but I really thought this might be the case.

Mr. Nerfect 07-17-2018 07:04 PM

It doesn't look right.

Ol Dirty Dastard 07-17-2018 07:19 PM

I could be wrong, but he may have had knee surgery recently, accounting for the lack of size on his legs (what with not being able to train them).

Sixx 07-17-2018 07:21 PM

Oh. Wait, wasn't he famous for tearing his quads? Or am I mistain' him with someone else?

Nah. There are pics of him from years ago where his legs look like twigs. They've always looked like that.

Sixx 07-17-2018 10:45 PM

Anyone else noticed that a lot of NFL players that sucked ass big time turned wrestlers?

Emperor Smeat 07-17-2018 11:03 PM

Yeah at least in recent years, that seems to be the growing trend.

The ties between football and wrestling go back decades with several good players in the past going into wrestling because it paid better or was easier to make the big bucks. Then you have others like the Rock who were decent or good at the college level but never went beyond it prior to becoming wrestlers.

Sixx 07-17-2018 11:06 PM

O, i imagine some decent players turned wrestlers in the past. Like who for example?

Emperor Smeat 07-17-2018 11:11 PM

Ernie Ladd is usually the one that gets mentioned the most but supposedly Dusty Rhodes was good enough to be coveted by NFL teams but turned down offers to go into wrestling instead.
