Microsoft set to release updated version of the Xbox 360 controller on November 9 with a new color scheme for the buttons and a "customizable" d-pad to make fighting games easier to play than on the older controller.

The only catch is the new controller will only be available with Play & Charge kits and priced at $64.99.

Looks like Microsoft is never going to do a public beta for Xbox hardware ever again. Beta testers for Kinect already trying to sell the hardware on Ebay with $1200 being one of the higher bids so far.

Final commentary regarding the 10$ used game extras thing:

The idea that THQ is somehow "disrespecting customers" with this kind of rhetoric misunderstands the situation as completely as it is possible to do so. In a literal way, when you purchase a game used, you are not a customer of theirs. If I am purchasing games in order to reward their creators, and to ensure that more of these ingenious contraptions are produced, I honestly can't figure out how buying a used game was any better than piracy. From the perspective of a developer, they are almost certainly synonymous.

It's exceedingly rare that I purchase a game from Gamestop these days. I got tired of being harangued for trying to buy products there, or being told that they didn't have a product when they did, or going across the street to Best Buy or Target or Fred Meyer and finding fifty copies of the game I was trying to buy heaped up like some heathen altar to commerce. There's more, besides. At some point in the last few years, I became incredibly uncomfortable with the used games market.

I don't think Online Codes that gate access to multiplayer are a particularly good idea, just watching the kinds of threads it generates - but that's exactly what Xbox Live does, for every game on the platform. Sony's considering codes as well, but they're getting it coming and going: they've committed themselves to a dedicated server infrastructure for first party titles, and multiplayer is "free," so a used copy of a Resistance or an Uncharted 2 is a worst case scenario. I prefer an approach along the lines of the Flashback Pack for the second Gears of War - something fun and extra, that feels like a reward. More treat than trick.

I traded in games for a long time, there's probably comics somewhere in the archive about it - you can imagine how quickly my cohort and I consume these things. It was sort of like Free Money, and we should have understood from the outset that no such thing exists. You meet one person who creates games for a living, just one, and it becomes very difficult to maintain this virtuous fiction.

Well said, even if its been said here before by Kalyx the hypocrite.

alvarado52 08-31-2010 11:55 PM

Its a no brainer really. The developer only sees the revenue when purchased new. Maybe if they somehow negotiated some sort of percentage for used, they may relax on the 'code' thing.

I kinda think it will swing that way eventually, because it appears every company is adopting some sort of restriction for used games that come with a new via 'online code'.

Its gonna get to the point where people wont buy used because it will cost equal or more compared to a new game, and Gamestop or other game stores gain about 80% of their earned rev selling used.

Kalyx triaD 08-31-2010 11:59 PM

Whether people buy used games are up to how Gamestop handles it. I still think they should lower used game prices to undercut the codes and support their customers (and get massive PR cooz).

Unless those stock used game covers with the bad character art costs way more to print then we give it credit for.

Emperor Smeat 09-01-2010 12:07 AM

Would not matter how low Gamestop or other stores drop used prices since developers and publishers have stated their intent of used games are a type of piracy even though this generation they are able to make some lost money back from DLC, avatar stuff, and collector's editions.

They're not in the business of making some money back; "DLC, avatar stuff, and collector's editions" are money on top of projected returns. And even if something was designed to recoup revenue, they really shouldn't have to. It's not like a used game market was their idea to begin with.

Gamestop lowered the price on a lot of used EA sports games.

Funky Fly 09-01-2010 01:40 AM

As much as consumers are "bastards" for buying used, developers should "not make middle-of-the-road games" if they really want to take a bite out of the used market. I buy used if it's an old title, a rare title that appears in the used section, a title that won't drop in price for whatever reason (eg KoF 12, GH 5) or if it's a title that's kinda interesting, but not worthy of $70.

Kalyx triaD 09-01-2010 02:02 AM

Perhaps a 'DVD memory used' quota that determines price.

Or is that too much regulation?

PS3 games would become the most expensive to buy since majority of its games need to have the game data written twice to make up for the slow disc speeds on the PS3.

Could also become a problem where a developer squeezes in unnecessary data just to reach the next tier in order to charge more.

Kalyx triaD 09-01-2010 02:49 AM

A system would reveal the clowns in the industry, I think.

Like, I think we'd be able to spot shenanigans like the ones you mentioned.

#BROKEN Hasney 09-01-2010 09:01 AM

It would also be retarded. Companies just wouldn't compress certain assets and claim it's for quality.

Kalyx triaD 09-01-2010 10:03 AM

Like now?

#BROKEN Hasney 09-01-2010 03:47 PM

Well, no.

Some damn fine games weigh in at under 4 gigs of used disc space. Doesn't mean any less work has gone into it.

I would gladly spend more on the under 4gb Burnout Paradise than the stupidly boring and large FF13, for instance.

Kotaku has contacted GameStop for official comment and will update this story when they reply.

"GameStop has agreed out of respect for our past and present men and women in uniform we will not carry Medal of Honor in any of our AAFES based stores...," the email reads. "As such, GameStop agreed to have all marketing material pulled by noon today and to stop taking reservations. "GameStop fully supports AAFES in this endeavor and is sensitive to the fact that in multiplayer mode one side will assume the role of Taliban fighter."

The stores on bases contacted by Kotaku all confirmed that they no longer will be selling the game and referred us to GameStops in town to pick up the title when it comes out.

Electronic Arts declined to comment further for this story, saying they've made their opinion on the matter clear already.

BigDaddyCool 09-02-2010 02:39 PM

#BROKEN Hasney 09-02-2010 02:42 PM

Meh, EA knew this is the reaction they'd get and are hoping it will help sales. The marketing guys are probably masturbating over the 'mindshare' they've gotten.

Xero 09-02-2010 02:45 PM

You'd think they'd be upset over the concept in the first place. It's a series that encourages bloodshed. Doesn't matter who you're playing as. It really is just stupid.

Xero 09-02-2010 02:55 PM

I'm not against the games, I'm just not seeing the logic in banning it when the other games get through.

BigDaddyCool 09-02-2010 02:56 PM

BigDaddyCool 09-02-2010 03:09 PM

Anyhow, back to my real point. I don't see what your problem is with game stops on military bases not selling certain games. It isn't like the game is completely unavailable. And if you are mad because it is a marketing ploy, we I guess you might as well bitch and moan about the entire marketing industry because they all pull that kind of shit all the time. But I ask that you don't because my friend works in marketing and it is her birthday.

* Go to Options and Audio Settings.
* There's a waveform display at the bottom that changes if you press the Z Button-tap Z until the waveform looks like vertically rising fog.
* On the D-Pad, press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, A, X, Z. You'll hear an audio cue if you did it right.
* Back out to the front end.
* Start a race. Pick the first guy.
* The pit crew voice will now be some dude who basically insults you the entire time. Also, the turbo becomes a little girl's voice saying "meow meow"

Glad it's final. Now you can shut up about it. Having the Penny Arcade guys agree with you, which is more on personal reasons than ethical doesn't make you any more correct.

I love PA, but they're missing a lot and justifying it. Like Kalyx the Hypocrite would.

One more point on this, that people with a brain might read, is that you and PA both took a very strict look at the term customer. Part of the problem is that the customer base for a media is larger than that. It includes people lost and people they wish to gain. This is an attempt to expand the customer base by the very literal auspie definition Kalyx Tarded and Gabe and Tycho use for the argument.

But trading in used games was never free cash. There's no such thing as a free lunch, and there's no such thing as free games. Since these games pump money back into the gaming "economy," even for the purposes of other games by the same company, you need to factor in those "customers."

I wonder if they buy all their cars and houses new, too. Same argument, different media. I know people try and justify that disconnect, but let's be honest: Knowing a contractor doesn't make you buy new houses instead of old ones. Knowing an engineer doesn't make you buy new cars.

It's been awhile since we've heard anything on the Devil May Cry front, and while Capcom isn't ready to announce anything just yet, Keiji Inafune is willing to drop a few hints.

In an interview with 3D Jeugos, Inafune admits that the series doesn't do particularly well in Western markets. With that in mind, it's likely that the games will be given a "Western touch" to make them more attractive to American and European players.

While it's not a confirmation that the game is in development, it's an interesting comment based on what we've previously heard. Rumors have been floating around for some time that Cambridge, England-based Ninja Theory has been working with Capcom on the upcoming sequel. So is this the only resurrection of the series? Or are they doing something with Abe?

Can't say I was ever really interested in Stranger's Wrath.

Emperor Smeat 09-03-2010 07:53 PM

According to some reports, the original developers of the Xbox series of Oddworld were supposed to make 5 games in the series for the Xbox starting with . They decided to drop from the video game industry after a fallout with either Microsoft or EA over the direction of the series.

Microsoft bought the series to be exclusive to the Xbox but only published Abe's Odyssey and EA wanted their game to be heavy in 1st person shooter while the previous Oddworld games were more heavy in puzzles and action.

The remake that is being made is meant to either restart the series that never got finished or expand it beyond just the original Xbox. The remake will be the exact same game but in HD and some type of Move support and extras.

There's more than 1? Like, what I'm saying is why would you make more than 1? Other than graphics, GUI and music, what exactly would be different about 1 game in the series compared to another? The rules of poker don't change and it's not a game dominated by action, so what gives?

Not being an ass, I seriously would like to know what changes because I never got into the whole poker thing.

So what does a sequel to WSoP look like? Roster updates? Create a Gambler? High Def tells?

Wii version of Star Wars Force Unleashed 2 multiplayer video shown at PAX 10. The multiplayer fighting mode is heavily influenced by Super Smash Bros in appearance and play style.

The mode is exclusive for the Wii and allows up to 4 players to play but only playable in offline and not online as well.

Looks more like that shitty Ninja Turtles game than Smash Bros.

Yeah, getting sick of all the reading in Dragon Age. Shit is ridiculous.

D Mac 09-06-2010 04:36 PM

If I wanted to read I'd go to school.

Lead designer and important person in the development behind the Company of Heroes series killed in a car crash last Friday. Last game developed by him was Company of Heroes Online which was released only a couple of days ago (US release date).

According to the people in the other car who caused the accident, the driver decided during the middle of driving to take off her sweater while the passenger side held onto the wheel. Either she bumped the person holding the wheel or the passenger lost grip of the wheel to cause the crash.

Wasn't long ago that Kalyx was bashing "M$" And was one of those folks that Tycho was talking about.

Funny how that works.

You do know it was a joke right.

To be fair, you probably shouldn't breed.

OssMan 09-07-2010 12:50 AM

Next month marks the 25th year anniversary since Super Mario was released in the US. As part of the celebration, Nintendo releases the logo design and will use it for anything Mario related later this year.

Last time this logo was used was for the GBA Micro when Mario was celebrating 20 years.

(The logo looks like Dissidia [duodecim] 012: Final Fantasy, so just a touch awkward, but regardless of the full title, it'll be fun to say out loud.)

Fans of the original PSP game will likely be excited by the roster additions in Dissidia Duodecim. Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII and Kain from Final Fantasy IV appear to be confirmed, going by the new issue of Jump.

Dissidia Duodecim: Final Fantasy may be making an appearance at next week's Tokyo Game Show, so we'll see if the sequel to 2008's Dissidia: Final Fantasy is still like doing your taxes on the moon.

Still a PSP series, dammit!

So... is the latest VF5 revision finally coming to PS3/Xbox 360? i guess this is the most close hint (it can be a whole new game anyway)."

This is possibly great news for anyone waiting for Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown to come home.
Looks like the latest VF will be coming home after all. With talk of the majorly updated engine, I'll wanna enter the fray and see what the big deal is.

Funky Fly 09-08-2010 12:07 AM

It's still VF. You know what that means.

Kalyx triaD 09-08-2010 12:13 AM

Maybe I'll experience a breakthrough.

Funky Fly 09-08-2010 01:08 AM

Only thing that'll break is your controller when you throw it in anger.

Kalyx triaD 09-08-2010 01:12 AM

Killing what extremely little hype I had for this game. Bad omen.

Funky Fly 09-08-2010 01:22 AM

Rent, don't buy. SSF4 was a game with major changes from SF4, and I'm pretty sure if a guy hated SF4 he won't like SSF4 any more. Same with this shit.

I almost did that with SSF4. So furiating that game.

Kalyx triaD 09-08-2010 01:33 AM

Surely there's some value we're missing. I just need a week or two with it to be sure. Maybe my past conclusions were overly harsh due to playing Tekken so much. I'm much more open to alternate gameplay now.

I promise.

RoXer 09-08-2010 01:43 AM

I'm still waiting to play you in VF5, Kalyx
